In memoriam Bordeaux tasting for Piet Kuiper (@ RvD): I know this vintage of this wine from a previous occasion and reading that, I am sure we had an off bottle tonight. Very special bouquet with smoke and tar in an unpleasant way. Same on the palate, mature with ok acidity and slightly drying tannin. No score.

Very nice and in top drinking spot. Black and red cherry, blackberry, red currants, smoke, autumn forest and iron. Still fresh with good acidity. Beautifully mature and complex wine.

Monthly tasting club "The Tasting Club"; Better Bordeaux of 15+ years old (@ My place): Dark garnet red. Beautiful and complex bouquet with smoke, vanilla, autumn forest, iron and medicine impressions. Same on the palate, some licorice, chocolate, blackberries, coffee, chocolate, red berries, menthol and good, fresh acidity. Beautifully mature and complex wine

The Grand Tour - day ten (Bordeaux): Leather, very slight wet cellar, brambly fruit, slight bonfire and earthy notes. A touch of sous bois as well. Softly juicy, brambly fruit, almost a little citrus, fully resolved tannins, leathery and spicy.

Dark-red and brillant colored. Smoky bacon aromatics forward. Little dark berry fruit but mostly tertiary with leather, cigarbox, herbs (rosemary!), grilled tomato and animalistic notes. Liftes by freshness of mint and orange zest. Fine sweetness and licorice. Smooth, and harmonious, yet robust and long on the palate. Finishes with beautiful and cool spiciness of (green) pepper and licorice. Elegant and harmonious wine of drive, depth and robustness.

Tasted blind: Still young in color, one would not expect a 16 year old wine. Nose is a mix of a very peaty Scotch (Lagavoulin) and smoked sausage. At the same time it is quite short and one-dimensional. As all of these features do not fit this wine I suggest this was a flawed bottle. Hope to retaste.

Pontet Canet mini Vertical: Mostly tomato and its leaf on the inviting nose. The medium bodied palate features a complex array of elements: sweet, gently grilled tomato, tomato leaf, blackcurrant leaf, cigarbox, graphite, cloves and even a little fino sherry (wine does slowly oxidise as it ages afterall!) No fruit, though, but that's not an issue when you have so many non-fruit flavours in perfect balance. Tannins and acidity are still present, albeit in the background. This wine could, quite possibly, live for ever. Elegant with subtle power. Lovely.

Ruby core, clear rim. Quite herbaceous on the nose, with notes of blackcurrant secondary to this - not particularly effusive or charming. Fine entry, the midpalate was dominated by mud and soy bean flavours, chunky unrefined tannins, and a bitter coffee finish. Based on this bottle, flat and lacking elegance and definition.

Really quite nice. Earthy, minerally, a lot of lead pencil and gravel tones. Something a bit off about it - a bit pungent, affected and coarse, but rich and interesting nonetheless.

Has been a sleeper but is now coming into a superb phase which will last probably another 3 to 5 years. Wonderful perfume of blueberries and mulberries with cedarwood and leather. On the palate absolutely gorgeous berrycocktail with leather and cigarbox. Great wine, let us see how the rest of the case evolves. May be 98 points in the future

Aromas of cigar box, cedar and tobacco leaf. It is sweet and vinous in the mouth with a graphite spine. Some thought it to be a little under fruited for the structure but I liked it.

I enjoyed the smell of this wine quite a bit, with a bloody, raw meat character dominating, accented by hints of cedar. Initially, the fruit staggered into the attack, but picked up some momentum through the middle and into the finish. Unfortunately, it lost what little momentum it had after about 15 minutes in the glass and the fruit apparently decided to simply pass out on the street corner, leaving only some rather mean tannin and acid behind.

I suspected that this bottle is flawed. It still has some taste at the first hour but then it went alot worse after 2 to 3 hours of decant.
