2012 Dogfish Head Brewery Ale Noble Rot

  • This beer is officially past peak. It has lost the nice tart edge it used to have, and had replaced it with a malty, squash-like aspect that tends to creep into beers as they age. Drink now.

  • Pours a light straw color with a touch of amber; little head. The nose is very perfumey, some grape must and saison funk and straw. The taste is a bit like a saison as well, with not a lot of overt hop character but a distinct tart dryness. This has sweet notes as well, the grape must perhaps, a fermented note (although not bready), and almost a bit toward the mead side of things. Can't help but wonder if this is because the couple bottles I have left are near/at/past their ideal drink-by dates. Ultimately not one of my top faves from Dogfish Head but quite enjoyable nonetheless.

NOSE: spiced carrots, with an after-whiff of tropical white wine; sweet potato and a hint of cinnamon; kind of Saison-like; moderate+ expressiveness; botrytis not detectable; there’s something that’s simply beguiling about the Nose on this beer --- probably the Viognier grape must. Very nice.

BODY: yellow-orange color; medium-light bodied; persistent bead; little bit of lacing left all the way down the glass.

TASTE: hmmmm … interesting-good. Tastes a touch tart/sweet, but it finishes with beautiful dryness; somewhat empty and short on the finish; 9% alc. is a bit warming in the belly; cannot notice the botrytis; definitely Saison-like. Only a weak/non-existent finish keeps me from scoring this as 9.0 – 9.5; as it is, however, I think a slight downgrade to 8.5 – 9.0 is appropriate. Will definitely buy this beer in the future, and I see K&L has some coming soon for $12.99 per 750mL bottle --- I’m buying all day long at that price. This is probably the best Dogfish Head brew I’ve had --- really good stuff here.
