26022023 - 5 ⭐️ luncheon hosted by SKT with 14 bottles of wines & 2 aged cognacs. Our first red tasted blind from LMC. Prominent roasted bell peppers, still some red fruit with plenty tertiary notes - forest floor, old leather & stale tobacco. The palate is surprisingly still energetic with powerful acidity & plush tannins. Guessed this almost correct as left bank Haut Medoc Bordeaux but got the vintage wrong.

Medium garnet with a hint of orange. Fruit compote melange on the nose. Pleasantly sour with slightly green raspberries but with a sweet raspberry finish that lingers quite a while .

Supper at Bouillon L'Entrecote (Bouillon L'Entrecote): From Coravin. Leather, earth, a little mushroom, black and red berries, freshly juicy with a little cellar stink and a touch of burr on the palate. Just lovely with charcoal T-bone

Corked but drinkable. Tannins were still evident, acidity was medium (-) , but wet cardboard aroma was somewhat off putting. Fruit was nearly exhausted. Clearly past prime.
33 years of age has mellowed this out but the traces of its youth are still there. Earth, tobacco and leather right off the bat but give it 30mins to stretch its legs and it starts to reveal just a hint of sweet red fruit and hawthorn. There’s a spritely acid streak and the finish is quite long. Nice enough though not exactly memorable. Fully resolved and well into its twilight.

Old Bordeaux. Lovely combination of earth , leather and cedar on the nose . The fruit is very muted here. Palate is mostly acid and wood. NEEDS food! Not a casual drinker. The finish is lengthy . Good QPR, if you are prepared for an austere wine that needs food .

Needs food! Alone, out of the bottle this tasted out of balance with faded fruit and acidity very dominant. Decanted for 2 hours. With food, the nose of leather, tobacco and just a touch of black fruit comes through . In the context of a rich meal, this stands out as the acid helps clear the palate between bites. Not much fruit left on the palate. Finish is long.

A pretty classic bottle of aged Bordeaux. Cassis, leather, earth, dry dark fruits and resolved tannins. Medium bodied, fruit maybe not what it used to be, this is still a nice bottle of wine. I've been thru 18 of these in the past 10 years and have 6 to go, may start drinking these a little more frequently as the window seems to be closing.

Classic bordeaux nose of cassis, tobacco, leather and dry dark fruits. Showing the same on the palate, with lots of tertiary notes. The fruit is perhaps not what it once was, but this still delivers when you want some of that old school, fully mature bordeaux.

Last of six bottles procured in two lots in 2012 & 2014. I kept this last bottle to drink after reaching 30 years. As pointed out in my last note three years ago, most of the fruit has faded with only tertiary notes and some acidity holding this together. Drinkable but this is dying quickly. Overwhelmed by the roasted duck tonight.

From magnum. Really nice mature bdx with a fine mint streak giving it freshness. Palate is otherwise mature, showing tertiary fruit. Leather notes as well. Fine tannins. Overshadowed by the ridiculous lineup tonight.

This was in a surprisingly great spot. Decanted 30 minutes. Wine was showing nice classic bordeaux notes, tannins fully resolved. Still some fruit, but lot of secondary notes.

Wow! What a fun wine! Drank this last night, so no tasting notes per se, but the whole experience with this wine was awesome. Cork was in pristine condition. Decanted for about 2 hours, and some initial funkiness did blow off during the decant. Otherwise a classic delicious and perfectly aged Bordeaux. Excellent with mustard crusted lamb loins and bacon brussel sprouts. Thoroughly enjoyed by all.

I was lucky enough to buy this vintaged magnum. It reminds me of how good an aged bordeaux can be . Every sip leads you to wanting another. It was a rare treat to have a properly aged 30 year old wine, and this one was worth the wait

From a magnum which had been stored at the winery then "rebouchée" in 2017...
On initial decanting there was a hit of fruit on the nose, but that disappeared very quickly. Drinking 45 minutes later this is classic aged bordeaux. Leather, tobacco, dried dark fruit. But initially with rather strong tannins.
However, after a couple of hours things start to smooth out: the tannin moderates and the tertiary flavours are very smooth. It is then excellent food wine. The finish is long and dry, but rather pleasant.
EDIT Had my second (and last) magnum a couple of weeks later, gave it a bit more air and had it with a high umami beef dish and it paired beautifully. I wish I had more of these - great value at US$65 for a magnum.

A well aged Bordeaux. Opened and decanted an hour before our Monday night tasting. Should have decanted earlier. Earthy, mushroom, dark fruit and cigar notes on the finish. Cork was in perfect condition. Will wait a while before opening next bottle...

This is damn good, perfectly aged Bordeaux, full of fruit, and full of life. At perfect maturity, this wine throws heaps of earth intertwined with coffee, while packing gobs of antiqued red fruit, with an awesome tannin package to drive a nice adequate finish. Rather sweet for a Bordeaux, this tells tales of the ripe fruit from the great 1989 vintage. Drink, Drink, Drink...Lovely.

Nice old bdx. This was a recent chateaux release. Completely tertiary fruit. Lovely tobacco and leather notes. Hints of green herbs. Fades quickly on the palate and finish, however. Past prime but lovely older bdx.

Cork had seeped 80% of way through, decanted with less sediment than expected, some funk on nose initially that went away after 30+ minutes. Past bricking towards rusty color. Beautiful, classic Bordeaux, All dried fruits and cigar tones and a lengthy finish. more finesse than power. Starting to fade, will drink my last one soon.

Bought 6 from the Garagiste 4 yrs ago and just opened the first bottle. Cork was in good shape, a little funky but the wine wasn’t. Has a nice classic nose. Only slight bricking with moderately deep colour. Some fruit still showing and a nice smooth mouthfeel with soft tannins still there. Fully mature. Probably as good as it will be but if the rest are like this it will be a bargain...

Cork had seepage to within 1/4" of the top. Opaque garnet color with separation on the edge. Decanted off the sediment which was not overwhelming for such an older wine. Beautiful nose of ripe red and black fruit along with cedar. Medium to full bodied palate showed the same along with ripe tannins. Long finish! Impressive wine given its age and Cru Bourgeois appellation.

Beyond its peak. First bottle drunk in 2015 had some earthy, musty notes. My bottles were well-stored, purchased from the Gargiste as well. 2017: of the remaining 3 bottles, nose still carries some interest but brown edges, acidic and absent of fruit, leather, mustiness or any character. Precipitous decline. May still be useful for cooking but little else.

Seems past it's prime, but really well balanced and certainly enhanced our pork chops. Drank over a few hours, not much left to open up, but did improve slightly over the course of the evening.
First bottle from a batch bought from Garagiste...decanted for 90 minutes, drank over 2 hours. Was looking for something with some earth and nuance to pair with my "Stracotto" Italian Pot Roast...serious beef with spiced Italian Potatoes...
Medium, opaque garnet color, separation at the edge. Nose is red fruits, earth. Palate of dusted old cherry, plums, mushrooms, earth notes and herbs. Lively through the mid palate, still showing some chewy tannins and a strong finish.
This wine was nicely aged, elegant and still showing well. Hard to say if it is pat/in its prime as this is my first bottle - but drinking well and pairing well with savory foods...what is not to like. Certainly closer to the end than the beginning, would drink over next 3 years.
This is even better than last year. Great fruit and smooth tannins. Paired with some grilled steaks. Supposedly past drinking window, but this was very good.

Smells mushroomie. Dense, but not particularly fresh. Still moderately tannic and the palate is better than the nose. This is past its prime, but may never have been particularly great. Still drinking, but better as an impressive "food wine". 87 df 8.5

Fifth of six bottles purchased back in 2012 and 2014. As previously noted, most of the corks are starting to seep, this one was within 1/8 inch from the he top. Decanting is a must to give the funkiness time to blow off and to allow the wine to settle. All dried red fruits and earth tones, with layers of complexity and a still solid finish. This wine is all about finesse and elegance as versus power. Paired perfectly with a roasted, boneless leg of lamb, mashed potatoes and a mixed garden salad. It seems to be starting to fade; however, if stored properly, it could hang in there a couple more years. For sure, this is close to the end of its drinking life.

Pours a beautiful garnet hue with just a faint brick at the edges.
On the nose it's full of bright red fruit and hints of oak. With time, some leather and green pepper show up, adding dimension and complexity.
The palate is incredibly good, with a very fine tannin that's just about fully integrated with the wine. Acidity is present throughout, helping to work with red cherry and currant, licorice, green pepper, and dusty leather.
I loved the finish, it's medium with a lovely taper. The tannins really push through to the end, in a good way.

Fantastic. Classic Bordeaux, with pencil shavings, black fruit, leather, even some floral elements towards the end of the evening. Definitely shows the value of buying wines from good but not famous (expensive) châteaux and letting them sleep for an couple of decades... Patience was rewarded here!

I decanted this b/c I had a bit of trouble w/ the cork. Earthy nose at first, and quite tannic, but smoothed and mellowed quickly. Agree about the green pepper notes. Certainly belies its age, but then again it's nothing too exciting. Good not great.

A surprise, classic claret. Tobacco, spice box, leather. Orange, slight bricking rim but garnet coloring and red fruits/cherry still there on the palate. An unfamiliar label to the group, but was appreciated for its aromatics and condition. Had some of the '89 plushness I've had the opportunity to experience in others of the vintage. Ready now, and a fun one to experience.

My last bottle unless another is hidden somewhere. Opened 2 hours prior to blind tasting. Definite brick on the edges, but still vibrant fruit on the nose and palate, still with the subtle scent of leather/pencil shavings I experienced 18 months ago. A favorite among 25+ bottles at tasting

Decanted an hour before dinner. Needs a decant. Showing some brick red on the edges, but still dark. Some fruit on the nose with earth and tobacco. Similar tast on the palate. Went well with steak, and still interesting to sip on its own after the meal. Tannins are well integrated. Medium finish.

Fourth of six bottles enjoyed since early 2013. The cork on my his bottle was in far better shape than a couple of the previous bottle. Definitely a very mature wine, but it is still drinking well. Decant as all bottles enjoyed to date have thrown lots of sediment. Should last a couple more years if stored properly.

Said goodbye to my last bottle of this. Solid as with the two previous. Maybe a little less interesting on the night, but it had to follow a much nicer '98 Barolo, so maybe that was it. Drunk a couple months ago, but what stands out in my mind was an almost charcoal-like note, along with some earth, tobacco, anis, and still a reasonable amount of fruit. Lots to like for $30.

This is my third experience of this wine over the last year-and-a-half or so, and it shows no sign of deterioration. It is definitely at its mature peak now and is so delicious. A really classic expression of the Left Bank, and a bottle that tasted blind would certainly surprise some tasters (e.g. it could be something much more highly appellated). A great discovery, and a wonderful way to sample really mature BDX without paying totally silly money. It has me curious about other vintages of the wines from this estate …

Big young fruity bord. Dark in glass, some fine sed. Appeared you on first tasting to have an almost grapiness to it. Shallow mid palate with resolved tannins gave it a soft mouth feel. Mellow acidity. Fun from age perspective, strange profile for bord. Not offensive. Not sure if flawed vs old?

Need to stop drinking this for another year or two! See how it evolves further. Smokey French nose; earth, wood, leather, cocoa; nice balance of acids, tannins; Cab-Merlot flavors; long fruity finish. w/Peruvian beef dish. 12.5 alcohol so wonderful with food.

Surprisingly fresh-tasting for a wine of this age. Lots of acidity and fresh fruit, with some earthiness to balance it out. Best after decanting for about 2 hours.

Cork pretty soaked but not apparent damage. Tasted right off the truck and not particularly disjointed. Lovely value for an aged Bdx. Smoke, barnyard, dirt, spice on the nose. Still noticeable tannins on the palate with some fruit hanging in there. Has plenty of the complexity that age brings but not yet on the decline.

Very enjoyable, great nose, it changes sip to sip, sometimes a little flat but then hits that magical umami spot on the back of the tongue you can't get with a young wine. The earthiness is predominant but the fruit is still there.

A really exceptional wine, especially for the price. Aged bordeaux, decanted for 2 hours and drank over another 1.5 hrs. and opened nicely. Brickish with a dark maroon color. Slightly disappointed, especially after reading other reviews here.
Rust/maroon color, as expected for the age.
Blueberry (cooked) on the nose, as well as slight vegetal (green pepper). Lacked fruit on palate, a little leather, green pepper, rather lacking in flavor, especially relative to the nose.
Several of us tasted it and my impression was probably the most negative, perhaps because of my high expectations ?

Dark garnet and noticeable bricking with medium viscosity in the glass. Nose of ripe cherry, plum, singed tobacco, strawberry, olive, mushroom and pencil lead. Secondary camphor. Med-full body, rich and angular with insanely ripe red fruit and plum on the palate. Loads of tobacco, menthol, pepper, volcanic minerals, tea and cocoa. Bordering on too angular, which I found appealing. Sturdy and paired nicely with many dishes. Med-long finish.

Mature Bordeaux color, some bricking. Nose is straight forward classic claret, with green forest, graphite, earth, spearmint and a hint of back fruit. On the palate the wine is very drinkable and satisfying. Flavor profile of hard cherry, touch of menthol, green herbs and wood. Short finish with not much finesee - expected given the cru status. Some hardness and edge which will not subside I would suspect. A great value and proof that non classifieds crus can age well.

Cork was saturated but thankfully no damage. In fact, a pleasure to drink a BDX with this sort of age. It held up well, with ample red fruit that's tart and pomegranate-cranberry-like. Low level tannins, bloody-metallic, savory, a hint of acidity. A good addition to our Thanksgiving.

Interesting, and nice. Cork pulled to discover seepage up to near top but not all the way. Lower cork soft, and smelled a touch like tca but the wine didn't come across as corked. After 45 mins to an hour, the funk blew away and left a very nice wine. Nose stayed reticent (earth, wet cedar) but the palate came alive, still vivacious with nice cedar flavors, juicy acidity and just the right amount of tannins (note - was surprised how much tannin was still there for 25yrs).

Soft cork, musty and cardboard-y in aroma, but not obviously corked. In a strange place where the palate appears to be at peak with the exception of the tannin. Should hold up for another 3-5 and may soften a bit more, but have no worries about drinking up now.

This is a fantastic, well aged Bordeaux reasonably priced from Garagiste. Similar experience to the prior bottles enjoyed in April and May 2013: marginal cork, signs of moderate bricking with sediment, short decant, and lots of spicy red currant, and herbal earthiness. Aromatic, balanced, and silky. Solid finish. Drinking really well, and in spite of its age, it's still hanging in there.

Opened 1 hour prior to serving. Graphite, leather, concentrated cassis and black cherry, and oak all make up the bouquet. Shows great freshness and verve. On the palate there is good acidity which highlights the black fruit. Integrated oak, soft leather, dusty tannins, and hints of black peppercorn throughout the palate as secondary flavors. A beautiful wine. The finish is quite nice, with a gentle taper that's equal parts black cherry and dried soil.

An excellent bottle. Cork was in very good shape with seepage to about 1/4 inch from top. Took a bit of air for the fruit to revive somewhat, but it is sill there. Nose offers tobacco, menthol, leather, and cedar. I found the cab franc note of bell pepper to be prominent on the palate. Also currants, menthol, tobacco and a bit of earth. No brett in this bottle. Great value for the price and if on the decline, there is still some time left in it.

Though a wine at 20+ years of age, still took about an hour of aeration to showcase itself; very lovely nose full of dark cherries, fresh mints, fragrant violets, and some black truffles; the palate, creamy, juicy, and supple with berries, cherries, spices, vanilla, and whipped cream; the finish, medium+ long, with mostly cassises, licorice, and dry pine wood; overall, 91-92 points at this stage; surprisingly good for an old Cru Bourgeois wine; should stay at this stage for a few more years and may improve a bit further for those bottles cellared properly; recommended, but watch out for the conditions of corks.

One wouldn't think that a 24-year-old bottle would still need some time in the open to come into its own, but as others have noted, a little time to breathe brings out a lot to like here.
Upon opening, this is still tightly wound, presenting an assault of bell pepper and an initial fear of Brettanomyces. The rough edges quickly smooth out, leaving a nose that still has its green pepper, but at levels that play very well with the cocoa, cedar and dried dark fruit that assert themselves once they perk up with some time out of the bottle. The palate is nicely balanced, with surprisingly rich currant fruit (for this kind of age) and smooth tannins that round out the lingering tobacco notes in the lengthy finish. As someone else indicated, it's not a mind-blowing wine, but it's highly enjoyable.

Nose a little subdued on P&P, some cedar/little fruit. Pleasant enough on palate, but after 30-60 minutes, cigar box, nice, ripe fruit, on nose and palate. Very smooth, medium/long finish. I wish I had bought more. Recommend decanting or opening at least an hour or more before consuming. Great QPR at $42/incld. shipping.

Very concerned when I pulled the cork as there was seepage to within about 1/8 inch of the top, and on initial tasting it tasted "marginal". I went ahead and decanted, keeping my fingers crossed. After about two hours in the decanter, I poured, noticed a little bricking in the glass; but surprisingly, it didn't look like a day over about 15 years (by CA standards). My expectations were fairly low given the age and initial impressions. As is often said, "don't judge a book by its cover", well, that certainly applies here!!! Aromas are very earthy, displaying mostly red currant, cigar box, dried cherries, and dried red berries. Lots of complexity, with layers upon layers on the palate that translate to a nice, long dry finish. Tannins are well integrated at this point.
Not a "Wow" wine but fairly impressive, all factors considered, especially given thats it not a "classed growth" ...only a mere "Cru Bougeois"! Recommend decanting, if anything, to reduce the sediment; however, don't be discouraged if this seems disappointing initially, there's still some life and enjoyment left in this. Congrats to Garagiste for finding this "jewel".

Opened about one hour prior to tasting.

Mature Bordeaux color, some bricking. Nose is straight forward classic claret, with green forest, graphite, earth, spearmint and a hint of back fruit. On the palate the wine is very drinkable and satisfying. Flavor profile of hard cherry, touch of menthol, green herbs and wood. Short finish with not much finesee - expected given the cru status. Some hardness and edge which will not subside I would suspect. A great value and proof that non classifieds crus can age well.

Wine Education Service - Mature Bordeaux (LSE): Plenty of colour, just opaque.
Delicate nose, vegetal with some fruity notes, interesting.
Earthy fruit, a developed taste, sweet fruit in the mid palate, reasonable length.

Still young in its integration. After four hour it really show its deep menthol and bright cherry on the nose and the tannins integrated to be a light dusting of cocao. Should have opened earlier and decanted.

A fully mature, good bottle of Bordeaux. Lots of forest floor, leather, and a little bit of black fruit. Still a little bit of tannin left too. Definitely getting on in years, drink up!

Soft, aged bordeaux palate with dried fig (partner) or dried plum (me), and lingering notes of mushroom and wet leaves. Nice, but not compelling. A bit lacking body. thankfully NOT musty! Now 45 minutes later, sucker has OPENED up, really interesting. I was worried it wouldn't stand up to dinner, but its lovely. We are opening a second bottle

This is within the perfect drinking window, showing hope chest, some wild blackberry, braised rosemary and truffle oil. There is still some feather tannin and the finish is medium in length. What a gorgeous, full body. Drink now.
