Nose: Apricots, honey, botrytis, spice and chamomile notes. Very nice nose that is sappy and fragrant with a nice hint of botrytis decay. A marvelous d'Yquem paired with Foie Gras Torchon.

CdB MN Spring Event (Minneapolis Club, Mpls, MN): Very light golden color. Drank a glass over 40 minutes. What a nose, this is bursting with a cornucopia of flowers, jasmine, acacia, and honeysuckle followed by such bright, fresh fruit notes with pineapple, peach and Mandarin orange creme brulee, mango, enhanced by the honey, orange zest and delightfully portioned spice notes. This comes off as youthfully bright, in such a great way - the early drinking window of 10 to 15 years, that for me is so appealing, really comes through. This has such poise with the honey, creamy texture, tropical fruits and the corraled sweetness. Loved it. Looking for this to just get better. 95+ to 96pts.

Good vintages of Yquem (Chicago, IL): Thick, opulent, and sweet. This does not have quite the same cut as many of the other wines tonight; it is relatively low acid and honestly kind of oily and fat. And yet! Somehow the peachy fruit manages to carry the day here, and this never feels cloying (though serving this chilled is quite necessary). White peach forward, versus the more typical apricot profile. Not very much botrytis spice here in play either -- this seems to be fully centered on the expressively sweet and delicate white fruit notes.

One sniff is all it takes before you're immersed in its web of overripe apricots, pineapple, exotic spices, flowers, white peach, roasted nuts, and honey. But, of course, the real excitement here is on the palate, with its wall of perfectly ripe, sweet, very sweet, and incredibly sweet, tropical fruits, mango, pineapple, vanilla, and lemon creme all coated with honey. Even with all this unctuosity, with all of its racy acidity, the wine is as vibrant as it is sweet. With all of its layers of sweetness, it is never tiring to taste, instead, it is an upbeat, thrill ride that can age for at least 50 or more years. Drink from 2023-2080.

Bordeaux 2011 - 10 Years On - 30 Reds: All tasted blind, not decanted. A few observations: 1) As expected, it's a mediocre vintage with many wines lacking depth and mid palate weight of great vintages. My average score for the reds was 91.3 pts vs group scores at more recent horizontals for 2010 (93.0), 2000 (92.7) and 2009 (93.9). 2) I expected more green/unripe notes and drying tannins but that is not the case (hence the solid 91.3 average). Most wines showed well-made (with only 6 out of 30 reds rated below 90 pts). 3) Left bank (average 91.8 pts) clearly trumps right bank (90.6) thanks to more mid palate substance. 4) Virtually no wine showed a) over extracted and already dying and b) with far too much ripeness. Both 2009/2010 (and 2015/2018) have several wines with these problem. 5) Most wines are in a good drinking window. Although not yet with tertiary complexity, the structure has softened and the wines are open (even without extended decanting). 6) Unfortunately (due to price), the best reds were Le Pin (97+ pts), Margaux (96), Petrus (96) and Mouton (95). 7) Good vintage for Sauternes it seems (we tasted only two) with a surprising Giraud (96 pts) beating a too sweet Yquem (93).
TN: Intense, expressive on the nose and palate with a plethora of fruit ranging from lime, citrus, the typical orange zest and quince. Beautiful saffron notes and a touch of spices. I found it to be a bit less sharp and fresh than the Guiraud in the next glass and was very surprise when revealed as I would have sworn the other one being the Yquem. I went back and forth between the wines, got seconds of both wines to check if I was wrong somehow, if my judgement is clouded after all this was the 32rd wine of the night but my initial judgment was confirmed. This bottle of Yquem lost the race against the Guiraud (rated 96 pts) in the next glass but was overall a touch too sweet with not the usual Yquem freshness and cut to keep it all balanced. Would love to revisit soon as this is supposed to be a great vintage for Sauternes and Yquem.

Boys Night at 67 PM (67 Pall Mall, London): 6 years since we tasted this ( Papies 96) and loved to cross paths again. Still very much fresh ( and utterly delicious) bright and energetic and with soft honey and apricot feel. Good use of oak here and helps the wine shine too at this stage and adds a nice weight on the palate. Harmonious and effortlessly balanced and elegant. Liquid gold. 95+

A lovely and thoroughly modern d'Yqyem. Simply stunning freshness and clarity and laser sharp precision - not a note out of place. And yet, it was a marvellous drink - almond, apricot and spices on the nose, body had citrus notes and riped pears. Finish was very refined and lingered for minutes.
Drink now or 15+ years.

Absolutely stunning wine with all the classic Yquem characteristics. On the young side but one of the lovely things about Yquem is that it drinks beautifully from about 5 years to 100 years.

Second Yquem in a week... Merry Christmas to me! Another stellar bottle; I need to pick up some more 2011 to see how it matures; just a beautiful and explosive nose of apricot, orange marmalade, honey, vanilla, and floral notes with spice. Rich, but with energy; fellow drinkers noted they didn't normally enjoy dessert wines, but this was delicious!

Wow. Second Yquem and this one blew my mind a little. Definitely saw the greatness and separation in this bottle... the nose was explosive and ever changing; apricot, peach pie, honeyed orange peel, candied pear blossom. The palate was rich, ripe, and yet so full of energy! The palate coating flavors seemed to never end and the finish was easily a minute. Great wine.

From 750: the end of a long, long evening, senses fairly dulled, but still got that incredible laser beam of ripe melon, mouth-coating texture, and a bright lift from the acid to cleanse my palate. Wonderful.

Beautiful nose. I could smell ten different aromas in layers. Same with the palate. Ten different fruits and flavors like lime, lemon, honey, honeydew, pear, honeysuckle, peaches, but above all oozing of sweet charred butter. My first d’yquem and certainly won't be my last.

Yes, it's still absurdly young. Yes, it's absurdly good. Still a straw/hay yellow color. The aromatics are unbridled and concentrated. To describe the nose and palate on this wine is an exercise in cliches and platitudes. It is all of them. It is the archetype, and this is a great vintage for Yquem, without a doubt. Leave it for at least ten years now. A+

Magnificent. Served from half bottle, this was really showing Sauternes-characters, layered with orange-confit, brioche and exotic fruit; served blind, I managed to place this in Sauternes, but was guessing older - 2005. #Ulvskov

Jean Louis Chave Hermitage Tasting (Wine Watch, Fort Lauderdale, Florida): Shared by one of the attendees at the Chave tasting. This was the perfect ending to a fabulous tasting. An alluring nose of pineapple, apricot, flowers, and brioche. The balancing acidity really makes these wines special. The fruit and acidity were so seamlessly balanced. The weight was perfect and the textures incredibly soft. A very long, lingering finish. This is clearly a great vintage of d'Yquem.

An unbelievable explosion of aromatics redolent of orange marmelade, lemon curd, clove spices and other scents too complex to identify, with a caressing mouthfeel and finish that went on forever. This is a wine to be taken into a dark, quiet room for hours of sniffing, sipping and contemplation and meditation. Otherworldly.

Orange & lemon peel, waxy honey, and just a hint of spice. Subtle botrytis this vintage, a restrained yet concentrated vintage, appealing already in its youth. Suave and precise but best starting 2020. (from 375ml)

A young but charming Yquem. Rich, creamy, deep and long. Perfectly balanced, and not too heavy as I often find to be the case with young Yquems. Eager to see how it will age but as a baby it is quite a stunner.

working with wine 2016 seminar 2 - sweet wines (Hilton Hotel, Sydney): Apricots and cream, vanilla, a puppy with a touch of wile ferment funkiness….lustrously sweet but with an acid line pulling everything begrudgingly into balance, feels more lime compote than apricot ham here. A touch of sweet gooseberry and spice. Long with a barely tangible tannic burr. Cream and vanilla join on the finish.

Institute of Masters of Wine - 2011 Bdx Tasting (Hyatt, San Francisco): Almond, grapefruit, pistachio. Beautifully detailed and aromatic. Disappointing acid - just medium. Superb nose but needs energy on the palate. This might be better in a few decades when it becomes more savory.
Mini vertical of 2011, 2009, 2007, 2005. Honeyed pineapple, white flowers, very ripe stone fruit, tropical fruit notes, creamy oak, spices. On the palate outrageously delicious, mouth coating, creamy, spicy, succulent, fresh. The balance is totally impeccable and the finish is sensational. Lots of finesse and elegance rather than power and weight. Wonderful now but with a long long future. 98-100

Medium gold colour. It shows pronounced intensity aromas of candied organge peel, fennel, peaches jam, honey, lemon peel and nail varnish remover.
It is sweet in the mouth with a medium+ acidity. It has a medium+ alcohol and a full body with a rich and oily texture. It has pronounced intensity flavours and a long finish.
It is an outstanding quality wine. It has an harmonious palate with the swetness and flavour concentration well-balanced by the acidity and the alcohol. The finish is very lingering and it shows complexity provided by botrytis.

Obviously this one is a baby, but it is nevertheless interesting to open up at this stage, and I'd say it's destined for greatness. A commenter below mentioned a resemblance to barsacs, and I can see his point - the nose is quite bright and uplifting, with some spiciness and smoke from the botrytis, and in the mouth it manages to be sprightly without sacrificing concentration or power. As of now, the profile is dominated by shimmering tropical fruits and honey, and less so the rich creaminess that develops in older sauternes. This has the perfect balance for a dessert wine. I preferred this to the denser & sweeter 2005 served alongside; the 2011, I feel, is the more versatile and interesting of the two. Would love to see where it will go in the future; the 95 is a very preliminary score.

K&L Bordeaux Tasting (K&L, San Francisco): Light golden color; floral, light, elegant, botrytis spice, very complex nose; palate has salinity, great acidity with vibrancy, now some tropical fruit, pineapple, picks up some body, great sweetness; finish is long. Nose is effortlessly light but very complex, while the palate has the density and richness as well as a superb vibrancy. A superb Sauternes and an excellent yquem, and I'm curious about how this new style of yquem (closer to barsac on the nose) will mature. The last time I had this it improved for at least a week, and this time was better than even the best from last time. 96-98++.

Vilken helt underbar ung Sauternes!

Wine Dinner; 10/24/2014-10/26/2014 (Bella Trattoria, San Francisco): From a half. Orange, citrus, grapefruit, kumquat, complex, intense; palate is full bodied, rich, but fresh, tropical fruit, apricot, incredibly young; finish is long. Very difficult to assess, but has all the components and is very nice. 93++ On retaste 30 min later, the nose had developed substantial spiciness and great botrytis. Day 6: Light yellow-golden color; incredible freshness with citrus fruit, grapefruit, some vanilla; palate is full bodied, has great lightness but also fabulous density of fruit, explosive flavors, still citrus fruit; finish is long. This is a fabulous sauternes, but is it many times better than other top chateaux? Not right now, but maybe someday. Try another half in two decades. Still 93++ Update: Every once in a while, I'll sniff this wine and the nose will just be haunting, just a wonderful combination of spice, fruit, and depth. I'm really curious about how this turns out... it could be superb, but it's just really difficult to tell. Maybe some glimpses of brilliance... 93-97++ Day 7: Similar in style to above notes, but this keeps generating more and more complexity over time. Almost a floral and honeysuckle component to the nose now, but still plenty of fresh fruit. Palate is youthful but has impeccable balance, maybe even becoming slightly richer than when first opened (very promising, as that was the biggest style shift from more aged yquem). 94-97++ today.

Nose: Even in this nascent stage, the nose is flowing with white peaches, vanilla, acacia flowers, nectarines, guava, apricot, lanolin, and quince. There is a ton of depth and class to the nose already, even though it is holding back due to it's precocious age.
Taste: Medium/full bodied with medium/high acidity. The structure is very youthful with white peaches, acacia flowers, nectarines, guava, and some lanolin notes. The feel is polished and sexy with great depth.
Overall: This is what d'Yquem is all about. While it is insanely young, the poise and regalness that it possesses is abundantly clear. This is a clear notch above the other 11 Sauternes and this can be a legendary d'Yquem.

Château d'Yquem - 2011 vs. 2004 (Stockholm): Light golden colour. Nose with tropical fruit, some apricot, honey, some saffron, and classical botrytis notes. The oak note is very well hidden and the pure botrytis notes dominate. The nose is elegant and rather discrete. The palate is very full-bodied with an enormous concentration of aromas, loads of honey, dried apricots, spice, quite good acidity, and a long and fruity aftertaste that goes on lite an Yquem should. The palate is approachable, the nose is young and a bit discrete. Overall the wine is definitely top class! Young, but drinks well now, 96 p.
Since the nose was rather discrete with surprisingly well hidden oak and dominating botrytis together with tropical fruit, the nose wasn’t spot-on Sauternes at the first sniff. It could actually have been some other top-class botrytised wine. The palate on the other hand, is definitely more classical Sauternes, with those spice notes that are created by the combination of botrytised grapes and the new oak barrels.
Actually, I don’t fully agree with the producer's own comparison to the 2001 and 2007 vintages. 2011 is a top-notch vintage that combines a lot of weight and concentration with a fine balance and isn’t lacking in terms of elegance, but it is not as acid-dominated as the 2001 or 2007, where in particular the 2001 is “built for eternity”.
Tasted from half bottle.

This beautiful Sauternes offers intense aromatics packed with overripe pineapple drenched in honey, roasted nuts, apricots, nectarines, white peach, flowers, orange rind and honey in the complex perfume. Thick, rich and intense, with the viscosity of motor oil, along with tropical fruit dripping with honey and the perfect amount of acidity for the 144 grams of residual sugar to give this elixir lift, 2011 Chateau d’Yquem is majestic. I do not think it’s quite at the same level of quality as the legendary 2001, but it’s not that far off. 98-99 Pts

Great wine.

Nose is effortlessly light but very complex, while the palate has the density and richness as well as a superb vibrancy. A superb Sauternes and an excellent yquem, and I'm curious about how this new style of yquem (closer to barsac on the nose) will mature.

On retaste 30 min later, the nose had developed substantial spiciness and great botrytis.
Still 93++
Update: Every once in a while, I'll sniff this wine and the nose will just be haunting, just a wonderful combination of spice, fruit, and depth. I'm really curious about how this turns out... it could be superb, but it's just really difficult to tell. Maybe some glimpses of brilliance... 93-97++
Day 7: Similar in style to above notes, but this keeps generating more and more complexity over time.
