It was late, my wife was on her Peloton, but I needed more wine. So I scanned my cellar for wines that were “past prime” and this popped up. I looked at my notes from the past three bottles that we had opened. I shuddered. Or maybe I cringed. None had been great, but my wife was not partaking so I would not hear the all-too-familiar: “See? I TOLD you so! We hold on to wines far too long.” I am not saying that was my wife saying that, it could very well be my conscious self chastising me in a voice that sounds an awful lot like my wife. But I digress. the über-golden color in the glass caused alarm as well as the desire to hide this from my wife if she were ever to emerge from her Peloton Bat Cave (I am pretty sure that image is a fat FAIL, but…). The nose follows the color: oxidative, but with some lemon curd. The palate? OK, Not a mind-blower by any stretch of my already elastic imagination, but this is pretty good: citrus, oak (in a good way), oxidized slightly (again, in a does-not-suck way). And a tart, vibrant finish. I really like it. But I did not save any for my wife. I am not an idiot (I think. Or at least I am fairly certain. OK. Maybe.) thedrunkencyclist.com

It seems as though this wine is growing on me. The first bottle was fun and a bit flirty, the second more mundane and average. This third had a bit more fruit, surprisingly, but it remained a bit thin on the mid-palate before a slightly above average finish. I guess this is the third girl you ask to the prom: you really had no chance with the first as she was way out of your league. The Second? You went a little more hedonistic, but was glad it did not work out since you had no idea what you were doing. This one though? While you know this is not the one of your dreams, it will easily occupy you at a party where you take the time to get to know one another and wonder if there is a future, while the other potential options are out of the question. thedrunkencyclist.com

I was a little let down by this bottle—not as enjoyable as the last. Lacking in nose, fruit, and depth, I was less than whelmed. Don’t get me wrong—it was a pleasant quaff, but there was not much there to really grab my attention either. On the other hand, my wife enjoyed it so go figure. Good. thedrunkencyclist.com

Very pleasant nose with some vibrancy and promise. On the palate, great spunk, but lacking a bit in the depth department. Kind of like that girl in high school that you were initially keen on dating, but after a week or two, you were glad she dumped you. Good to Very Good. thedrunkencyclist.com

Lemony nose with hints of oak. Aromas also of apple and pear. Flavors of apple, pear, limestone, lemon peel and grapefruit zest. Dry and balanced on the palate. Nice minerality. Good.

Bright, a bit pale. Not much nose. Crisp acidity. Apple, and a bare touch of creaminess.

Notes of green apple and melon. Slightly acidic with mineral/stone presence.
Longer finish than expected. Crisp and clean. Enjoy now.

Good texture and Pear/Apple notes. Straight forward low oak chard with some mineral and slight sea salt nuances.

Crisp, about the fruit, acidity on the finish. Not much minerality. Not obviously Pouilly. Refreshing summer style.
