I decanted this and there was quite a crust. The bottle was also cold. Sandra described as cherry, yes the fruit was still forward and lush, full and concentrated cough syrup and brown leaves, beautiful nose, ethereal, the wine s melding together nicely, slightly acidic on the finish. No shame to drink now, but I also don’t see a rush to drink for 5 years, the bottle was finished quickly with a nice roast fillet.

Well, I guess 9 more years this is longer a young wine, but certainly a high-quality mature CdP, just my tastes have changed and it seemed a little alcoholic and claustrophobic, and probably best that we drank this as an apertif rather than with dinner. Full-bodied mature grenache, some dirt and old oak, I am told our remaining 2001 should taste better and younger.

Beautiful mature Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Fairly classic style; not showing any of the excessive that has become more common. This wine is still holding up very nicely. As this was the first bottle out of a case, I did not decant it. It did throw a heavy sediment and as it still has sufficient tannin grip, I will decant the rest of the bottles. I plan to consume these bottles over the next 3-5 years+. It has just about everything you should expect in an aged CdP: ripe, plentiful fruit, soft texture, nice spicy and iron elements, clean finish. Happy.

Note: I use a scale on which 85 represents a very good wine.
Outstanding, as suggested by 91. It took a little while to open up (no decant, just let it breathe -- 30+ min), and it got smoother and smoother through the bottle. Very well-integrated, not big and bold as a younger CDP might be, but subtle. A true pleasure.

10th of 12, previous bottles very good to fine plus but one corked, not decanted - deepish, glossy brick red, little development; very attractive and integrated bouquet tending to floral and damson and black cherry with a little truffle and sous bois but no obvious grenache pepper or mourvedre sweaty saddle; medium full, glossy/velvety for CdP, old vine depth and length, very persistent and classy, best bottle yet! Fine plus (18/20).

A French Friday Night on the Deck (Rocknroller's (Kevin & Vicki's Place)): Medium dark brick red color. PNP, drank 2 glasses over 90 minutes. This was a beautiful bottle to end the night with and paired quite well with pork saltimbocca. The nose was complex and elegant with damp forest floor, red licorice, cherry, garrigue, spices, lavender, and distinct bacon fat early on. The palate is medium-plus bodied, elegant and sophisticated, fully mature, cherry, dried herbs, savory, bacon, there is a gorgeous blend of red fruit and earth that is enhanced by a lovely spiced quality. The tannins are silky and there is a long finish. I think this can go another few years, but it is wonderful now. 92+pts.

Very nice bottle of wine. Decanted about an hour. Still needs to breathe to take a bit of the glycerine off. Deep hues. Above average nose. Beautiful lush complex dark fruit with long finish. Drinking really well but not sure will improve anymore with age.

Cellared since release. Perfect cork and fill. Dark red core, lightening at rim. Cherry, garrigue, meat and leather on the nose. Medium body, soft ripe fruit, a bit on the low acid side balance-wise but not flabby, some early aged character. Takes some time to show its best but never becomes truly complex or fascinating. Medium finish. Not sure if this will get any better, but should hold for a few years. Very good to excellent.

Some brett on the nose and tongue; not overwhelming, but definitely there. Very soft fruit and this took many hours to finally open up. When it did, the wine grew in complexity, but ultimately was a bit of a disappointment; had the 98 recently and it was a much deeper and more sophisticated wine. This was medium in body and medium- finish. I don't see this getting any better and will make sure I drink my last two bottles within the next couple of years. B-

It's got the funk, and yes, it did tear the roof off. Big, barnyard goodness emanating from the bouquet. Plum, cherry, and earthy root vegetables on the palate, with a strong note of garrigue. Paired with slow-cooked goat in tomato/rosemary/cinnamon sauce and it was a stellar combo.

I'm fine with the more reserved nature of this wine relative to the more modern big score getters, but flavors here were a bit muddled....I dont think it's falling apart, but not sure I see any reason to hold off if you have these and are looking for a solid bottle of wine. 90-92 point range

Popped and poured. Medium garnet core, slightly bricking rim. Chocolate covered red berries, mocha, sweet port, earth and oak spice on the nose and palate. Very forward and inviting. Medium bodied, with decent concentration and fine length. A well structured, lighter style CdP that's drinking well at the moment, but should keep for at least another five years.

Even medium color without any hints of maturity. Gorgeous, complex nose combining in turn black raspberry, herb, tobacco leaf and cocoa. Decanted and poured. Beautiful mature garnet red, 5. Somewhat dusty slightly oxidised like nose. This changed over the next hour into an intense garrigue, herbs and some red fruit nose. Deep garnet to purple, no sediment. Steamy nose of blackberries, tar and beef. Entry is more ripe black fruit, especially berries and plums, middle palate has light tannins is slightly volatile, but the density overwhelms. Finishes with bracing tartness, more meat and some flowers. At 11 years this still drinks as a young wine. It was delicious with rack of lamb, with plenty of stuff to stand up to the mustard/garlic topping.

Wednesday afternoon at Kevin's: This started out promising and was originally a 92 point wine but it seemed to fall apart after an hour. Rustic, floral, Garrique, leather and bacon notes on the nose and palate. I would advise pop and pour of this wine and consume in a shorter period of time with a group. The palate is nicely balanced, medium body, prominent herbs, tart raspberry and black cherry, bacon fat and cooked meat. good round tannic structure. Medium-plus finish. Rene Geoffroy, Huet, Bosquet du Pape Chante Merle, Girard, Saxum (Our Home): This bottle was absolutely peaking. Popped and poured. Ruby color with a fair amount of sediment. Deep nose of garrigue, black cherry, raspberry, tobacco, and black pepper. Same on the palate, tremendous balance, good purity, expressive grenache, juicy long finish. Sunday Grilling Afternoon (Chez Pelz): This bottle wasn't nearly as fresh and exciting as the last one. It seemed a touch lighter and more advanced in its development. Very soft and unusually gamey on the palate. Dominated by plum and raspberry. Finish is good and texture is silky, almost a little like an older Burgundy. I really wonder if this bottle was slightly off. Very good, but nowhere near sa good sa the last bottle a year ago.

This wine has integrated over the past several years. The tannins have finally settled down and it has developed into a classic Chateauneuf-du-Pape with barnyard flavors dominated by horse saddle with additional notes of lilac, lavender, and toasted bread. This wine is just starting to hit its stride, and it will continue to develop nuance over the next several years.

90-91 pts

First really exciting wine in a while. Popped and poured, but followed over a period of a few hours. Very dark fruit profile that seems like it should have a substantial Mourvedre and Syrah component. Blackberry, plum, five spice, beef jerkey and soy sauce on the nose. Similarly, an Asian spice palate with dark berry and pit fruit and a noticeable pinch of sea salt. Finishes very well and fruit is extremely plush. Lots of density and depth, and the only negative thing to ponder is if the non-Grenache components got a little too much oak, but in totality, this is a great wine that will unquestionably integrate the oak treatment it received with adequate time. This is still years from its peak. I'll open my other bottle in 5 years or later.

Grenache Tasting (Brentwood, CA): Maybe this is too old world for me, but while others at the table seemed to really enjoy this wine, I thought it was just OK. My Weekend's Wines - A Rare Weekend of Mostly CA; 2/8/2007-2/12/2007 (Minneapolis, MN): This bottle didn't show as well as previous bottles. What a waste. This has at least another 5 years to go, but I can't wait. It has liqorice and bayleaves, damsons and cloves, but the tannins are still massively overpowering and it has yet to find its balance. I think it will be a big, blistering, blockbuster in the bouche.

I was really pleased by this wine. It did seem to shut down for a bit, did not try later that night, but the next night it was open again and really good. 91+ to 92pts.

Nez de fraise avec une touche fumée, une certaine complexité. Encore tout en fruit avec des tannins fondus, mais bien perceptibles. Très bon vin.

Ruby color, delicious fruity nose and an impressive raspberry palate. Medium, velvety aftertaste. Is peaking now. Drink now.

Pop n pour. What Jeb said. This continued to improve over the course of two hours, and should continue to drink well for another 4-5 years. Approx $40 on release; a good value at that price, but not a great value. 13,5% abv.

Rene Geoffroy, Huet, Bosquet du Pape Chante Merle, Girard, Saxum (Our Home): This bottle was absolutely peaking. Popped and poured. Ruby color with a fair amount of sediment. The nose is slightly earthy with prunes, a hint of smoke, black raspberries and some cherries. Layered on the palate. Complex and well balanced. Just a bit of spiceness. No hurry but no reason to wait.

Deep nose of garrigue, black cherry, raspberry, tobacco, and black pepper. Same on the palate, tremendous balance, good purity, expressive grenache, juicy long finish. Reminds me of Brunel's Centenaire with a little less depth and complexity. Finally ready to drink, should possibly improve some more.

À Prévost. Bon équilibre, civilisé, fruits confits. Style flatteur mais qui manquait un peu de tonus.

90-91 pts

Medium red w brown. /
Very mature nose. Berries (though muted), bit of tar. Typical 8-10 yrs CdP - on the cheaper end. /
Same in mouth, not too thin, quite round, tannins melted. /
Quite happy with wine (Bosquet des Papes, 2000: 1 case, 3 diff cuvées), but now its over (last bottle).

Rustic notes of saddle leather, garrigue, mineral and dusty clay. Seemed a bit listless to me. A bit more fruit would have been nice. 84-85 points.

We enjoyed this wine. It's definitely a food wine and doesn't stand as well on its own. Also, would recommend drinking ASAP, as it's probably at its last.
Enjoy!

My first quality CDP. So THIS is what they mean by funk. I love it. Had with Beef Flemington. I take it from the notes of others that this is not even at the high end of CdP funkiness, but I sure am sold.

My Weekend's Wines - A Rare Weekend of Mostly CA; 2/8/2007-2/12/2007 (Minneapolis, MN): This bottle didn't show as well as previous bottles. Scents of cherry, kirsch, and nori fill the glass, on the pallet this wine was more muted and somewhat hot. Over the course of two hours it settled down a little, but it never reached its full potential.

What a waste. This has at least another 5 years to go, but I can't wait. It has liqorice and bayleaves, damsons and cloves, but the tannins are still massively overpowering and it has yet to find its balance. I think it will be a big, blistering, blockbuster in the bouche.

Chateauneuf du Pape tasting at Hi-Time (Hi-Time Wine Cellar): Purple reddish color. Open nose of plums/cherries and pepper/spice. Similar notes on the palate - very openly fruity, with balancing but not overpowering pepper notes. Solid, structured medium finish. Very nice.
