Raveneau MdT and Chapelot (Chicago, IL): Certainly my least favourite bottle in the lineup tonight. It's more of a ready-to-drink, lighter style, but what perturbs me the most is the clear dose of 2011 green on the palate here. That said, this is very true to the vintage (ha!) but I do enjoy the lightness of this wine as a contrast to the more opulent and richer wines that we had in the lineup tonight. But it's not a vintage I'm running out to buy more of.

A little more true Chablis than the 12 or 13 but very good. Not an exuberant coastal marine nose, but it’s there. Open and round but with real verve and sone lemon grip on the finish. Very good indeed. Huge drive and intensity on the finsih. Coastal sea net elements come through with time.

While 11 isn't my favorite vintage from Raveneau it's coming along nicely and this bottle was better than an experience from two years back. Good lemon fruit and waxy texture carrying quite long and in balance.

Dinner at The Ledbury , London (The Ledbury, London): In Raveneau we trust, vineyard after vineyard , vintage after vintage and while the rest of his southern neighbours with their fanfare struggle with freshness and premox, here one only gets class and beauty. Fresh still albeit well evolved, energetic, soft honey, light kiss of vanilla from the oak . Bright still, coasting along nicely delivery a masterclass of elegance and effortless beauty. Does not scream or shout just dances softly to gold. Superb wine and an easy 96.
PNP into Zalto Universal glass (“Fruit” day): Pale golden to the eyes.
Minty and smoky notes, citrus fruits driven like grapefruits, slightly lactic (from malolactic fermentation) notes which is signature from this producer to me.
Really well balanced on palate and persistent finish.
94 points easy.

Lunch at Les 110 de Taillevent London: My first Raveneau and I can see why this transcends the region, this was completely unlike Chablis that I have encountered before. From previous notes this seemed like a weaker vintage with green notes but luckily mine only had the merest hint if you looked hard enough for it. Such incredible weight to this and even though the oak influence was quite palpable, in no way this could have been mistaken for a CdB white with its distinctive seabreeze character. Drinking well now.

Our first Raveneau. Certainly good, and maybe our expectations were just too high, but a little disappointed. Tasty, well made, balanced, etc but have had other Chablis, and plenty of domestic Chardonnay, that were very similar (if not better) at a fraction of the price. Happy to drink again… but maybe just not on my dime :)

Tracked over two days. I like it, but don't love it. When Raveneau is on, it's on (think of a vintage like 2014). This is a restrained and mildly expressive version of Raveneau with energetic notes of bright lemon, sea breeze, and minerals, but it never achieves the heights of greatness. Certainly better than the 2018 I recently had, but could use a lot more time. Even at WS Low, the price is too crazy for what you get.
Always a privilege to get that yellow wax though!

Heaters at Jade Court (Chicago, IL): Not a big fan of this bottle today; the pyrazine green notes of 2011 show pretty prominently here (not the first time this has happened with 2011 Raveneau, by the way). This doesn't quite have the same richness and depth as I would expect from Raveneau, likely due to the weak vintage. Good minerality that is honestly chablisien, but I wanted more.

Dinner with Charles M - Champagnes and Burgundies (Blacksalt, Washington DC): Medium expressive nose displaying white and yellow citrus fruit, noticeable pyrazine, oyster shell, saline, honeysuckle and limestone. Medium concentration, finely layered yellow citrus fruit, rip yet slightly lean, medium acidity and medium mineral, and a medium to long subtle white and yellow fruit driven finish. There is noticeable pyrazine here. Still enjoyable but not showing much excitement.

Luftet på karaffel i en liten time. Helt nydelig nese.

A classic and restrained vintage for this wine, so different from the opulent and effusive '10 for example. This may appeal more to those who like classic Chablis and nitpick Raveneau for too heavy a signature. Personally, I like the more exuberant examples of Raveneau precisely because they are so different than much of Chablis. In the final analysis a great classic Chablis, if not my most favorite recent vintage of Raveneau Monte de Tonnerre.

White burgs at Wu's.: White Burgs at Wu's. My favorite Raveneau on the night, and another success for the 2011 vintage. This had a bit of herbal notes on it with a touch of lemon on the nose as well, and a very good finish that goes on for some time. It's not a GREAT Raveneau, but it's a very good one and drinking very well right now (and there's not much better than very good Raveneu). Raveneau MdT is to me their classic 1er cru, and this was an excellent showing.

2011 and 2012 Raveneau are superb and showing much better than many Cote de Beaune whites in the same league. Tasted this magnum in blind – A fresh and generous array of reductive struckmatch nose. Zesty fresh lemons and ripe tree fruits, creamy and saline with a polished mineral finish. Initially thought it could be 2015 Meursault 1er due to the expansive minerals, but after a while the seashell was showing clearly, pointing towards Chablis from Raveneau / Dauvissat, 2012? Delicious. (91/100)

Fine Wine Dinner #1 (Barsac Wine Bar, Gothenburg): Initially a bit funky and almost pungent with wet wool, butter and nuts that mingle with herbs and some minerals. On the palate likewise a bit clumsy. With time in the glass gradually clears up and after 45 minutes this is really singing. Still very concentrated for a chabils but much more mineral and spice against a backdrop that is more or less crystal clear. Very long, spicy, herbal, almost tingling finish. Great wine!

Served blind - no notes taken. Good way to kick off the white Burgundy part of the dinner. Raveneau pretty much always delivers. And Montee Tonnerre is probably my favourite 1er Cru here. Rather outstanding balance and depth and thankfully in magnum which meant that there were a few small glasses to go around for each.

Lemon, apple, and sea breeze make for a concentrated but otherwise classically Chablissien nose if not for the top note of honeyed florals that lend the 2011 Montée de Tonnerre a sense of weight and richness. Moderate acidity and dense limestone minerality on the palate. As usual one of Raveneau's top cuveés.

Survey of 2011 Dauvissat and Raveneau Premier and Grand Crus (San Francisco): Medium yellow. Completely different from the Butteaux-bigger, sappy, brothy, less fruit driven although you can feel the richness of the fruit. Perhaps a tad lower in acidity too. Quite the essence of Chablis and Grand Cru quality and complexity. This had more than a passing resemblance to the Dauvissat Preuses tasted later.

Opened and consumed over 36 hours. Medium yellow. Lemon, sea breeze, broth and iodine on the nose. The palate is well balanced, not too acidic but the fruit is also lower toned so the package works really well, maybe lacking a little in the flavor intensity department. In a great spot for a 2011, perhaps a touch dilute compared to great years of MDT.

Yellow. Urgent sea breeze and iodine notes. Medium weight, classic mix of bitter orange and salty elements with excellent bite of acidity. More classic Chablis and less of the Raveneau hazelnut/beeswax. Superb and a big relief after a dismal experience with this in 2016. Certainly approachable now, but it has the spine to age further, albeit not one to hold for decades.

Long lunch with Martinborough winemakers (Martinborough, NZ): Served blind. To get proceedings underway, as people were arriving, Mark opened this Raveneau as a conversation bottle, to drink before the Champagne. And it almost stole the show … A brilliant Chablis, for me of near Grand Cru quality. Quite deep gold (but no suggestion of premox). A bouquet of lemon zest, wet limestone, seaspray and spices, with a subtle floral lift. Lovely focus and sparkling acids on palate. Refined and very well proportioned and balanced. Limes, grapefruit, peach and chalky minerals with a hint on salinity on the long dry finish. Serious fruit weight and power. Surprisingly accessible this young, but I’ve no doubt it’ll improve with more cellar time.

Initially quite flat and muted but it had been over iced so half an hour out of the ice bucket and it starts to open to reveal lemon over stone fruit, butter, a little oak, cream and sweet spice. Really lovely but with a touch of sourness that, well, doesn't bother me that much...

I didn't love the Raveneau '11's on release and re-visiting tis MdT hasn't changed my mind. Sure it is good wine and I derived a certain amount of pleasure from it, but I would almost take every other vintage around it if offered. There's some sweet. heady alcohol coupled with something green and herbal, somewhat akin to Gin botanicals. it is textured but the fruit is skinny, almost clamped. Length is good.

Sublime sophistication, Raveneau’s 2011 Chablis Premier Cru Montée de Tonnerre shows its pedigree with complex aromas of roasted pear, earth, hazelnut, iodine, and smoke. The influence of Kimmeridgian soils is evident on the palate, one that is both expansive and neatly tailored, swathed in stone fruit and lemon curd tightly bound by a mineral spine. The finish is intense, meandering and tipped in fleur de sel and dried herbs, especially tarragon.

Eastern dinner. Drank with my wife's aunt and husband.
Overall a very interesting experience. Has the sea shell minerality you so often find in the chablis wines, but there is a oily and full bodied texture to the wine that puts my thoughts to the great cote de Beaune whites. An outstanding "hybrid".
I could try and break down all the nose and palate components but this time I just want to sit and sip and let the wine just speak.

This was good, but not really moving stuff for me. I think I prefer the leaner Dauvissat style, though I need to find/drink more Raveneau to confirm this. The prices charged for this producer in the U.S. are silly to me. I got this one off the list at Le Cinq for 95 Euro, which was more than fair.

Lemon, honey some brothiness on the nose. Palate is rich and much further advanced than I expected from a 5 year old Raveneau. Lovely but it was missing that painful acidity and energy that I associate with Raveneau.

After having a somewhat underwhelming bottle of this a few months ago, it's nice to have one that delivered more of what I expect from a Raveneau MdT. As David noted, it's still a touch on the soft side for a Chablis, and the texture has some of that oily richness of a ripe GV, but the Raveneau/MdT flavours are all here - layers of ripe fruit, minerality, and higher toned, herbal accents all coming together very seamlessly on a large scaled frame that's still very polished and precise.

Very fine though very young, this did not have the laser focus I expect from MdT, but rather a more expansive, mouth coating combination of ripe fruit and minerals. It has great persistence, and it's ultimately delicious, but it feels a bit like an Austrian Gruner Veltliner due to the breadth/richness on the palate.

Full yellow. A mix of sulfur and brininess. Full body, very green flavors. The best thing about is the feel, but the combination of seemingly underripe fruit and sulfur leaves bitterness and a poor impression in the end. I did not like this at all.

I liked but didn't love this - it's tightly wound at first but opens up with a double decant, and even then it seemed to be missing the extra gear of focus and depth I typically expect from Raveneau. The aromatics are spectacular - vivid saline and stony scents around lemony fruit and faint vanilla and herbal accents, but the palate seems a bit thick and heavy right now without the depth or cut that other vintages of this have shown.

Took a while to open up, initially showing little more than minerality and vanilla. With air, showed more herbal notes on the nose along with full, but none of the smoky notes or more interesting complexity. The palate is all minerals, lime, lemon, floral, and slightly waxy, with lasting acidity. Very mineral-driven, with loads of salinity. Medium-long finish of saline and a bit of herbs.

Severe bottle variation from first...this one super fresh and clean (as you would expect). Classic chalk on the nose, first glass weighing heavily on minerality, as bottle opens up pink grapefruit takes focus and midpalate gains weight. Great complexity and sheer hedonistic pleasure. Did not disappoint...Raveneau never should.

Slightly low score for how delicious this was due to the atypicality of a Raveneau this young. We were three bottles deep when we decided to commit infanticide. Shockingly, this was actually developed. If blind, I would have guessed at least 10 years older. Honeyed on the appearance, almost sweet on the nose. Palate was fresh but not lazer focused as anticipated. Already secondary notes of hazelnut and quince. Not sure if this was due to bottle variation or vintage. Have one more bottle to try and figure out.

Pear, lemon, apple, grapefruit, suffused minerality, notes of wood treatment. Quite poised for its age, I think this stacks up well versus the heralded vintages on either side. Attacking acid energizes rather than overwhelms the palate and even at this young age is balanced by the vibrancy of the fruit. Very fine young Chablis. Needs a couple of years and will do well for a long time but this is good even now. 93-94

The 2011 Raveneau Montée de Tonnerre is still closed, but it is a very pretty wine. Aromas of lanolin, wet stones, lemon oil and white currants are the prelude to a glossy, stony palate impression with nice acid and texture, but which just needs time to come together. The 2011 AOC Chablis from Raveneau only began to pop this year, and even the more forward Butteaux is still a bit wrapped up on itself, so the Montée de Tonnerre deserves to sleep for a while longer before it will reveal its true quality.

Senn-d off (part 2): Chablis at Nico Osteria (Chicago, IL): Spot-on stuff. Ripe and fat nose, with lots of tart white fruit and a slight bit of florals. 10 Vintages of Raveneau's Montee de Tonnerre (Vin, Vino, Wine in Palo Alto, CA): 10 Vintages of Raveneau MdT 02 thru 12 (minus the 06), poured at a VVW sit down tasting. My ninth place wine. This wine showed a little odd, with what I can describe as petrol and anise on the nose. Almost like a gin and tonic. I'm not sure if its showing the greenie meanies, but something is off. The palate was fairly precise and on the heavier side, with a good lemon spice note and long finish. Not sure about the nose, so this got knocked down quite a bit in comparison to the other wines.

Lunch in Antwerp with a classical pairing of oysters and Chablis, oysters produced from the mineral-rich sea floors, and the Montée de Tonnerre produced from the mineral-rich Kimmeridgian soil. On the nose This Montée de Tonnerre had green apple and white fruits. On the palate it was rich and clean with sea shells, citrus, and tremendous acidity. Tasting of 3 wines from the 2011 vintage: Dauvissat Vaillons, Raveneau Mont Mains and Raveneau Montee de Tonnerre. Lemon rind, sea brine, some florals, a hint of tropical fruit, dusty, chalky and some discreet oak spice on the nose. Tart, lean and crisp palate. Crunchy fruit with a lot of dry extract, but leaner and less palate coating than more recent vintages of this wine. Juicy finish with an abundance of bone dry acidity. Well done for the vintage.

Tasting. Unmistakably Raveneau--I've no idea why but their oak doesn't seem to resemble that of anyone else. Struck me as being on the luscious end of the Chablis spectrum, with lemons and minerals. Love wines from this source but prefer them with additional age and that's how I felt about these few sips. It's the last I'll ever see of this wine; I'm pretty sure I'd enjoy it more in five years.

A private dinner (Restaurant Ekstedt *, Stockholm, Sweden): Frightfully young of course and its expression is still limited (although it opens up nicely after some time in the decanter to very pure and subtle aromas), but it is incredibly charming to drink already on the natural ripeness of its fruit. This almost belies what a tightly wrought and finely etched wine this is, with a salty minerality that seems to come from the depths of the sarth, relaxed slightly by the élévage on wood, but with all the energy and finesse of its terroir. With its flawless balance, this is an impeccable Montée de Tonnerre. Chablis-and-half. I do not think this will close down, so drink now - 2026.

This doesn't quite have the same richness and depth as I would expect from Raveneau, likely due to the weak vintage. Good minerality that is honestly chablisien, but I wanted more.

Just at the first point of maturity, this is nicely robust with beautiful Chablis character.

Went through phases though very good overall. Initially was ready to go but then locked up a bit. Decanted the last half of the bottle and from there it was great.

Domaine Raveneau Cellar Visit (Chablis France): Tasting at the domaine. Forward Apple aromas and flavors with stone fruit hints and nice background spice. The most approachable of the 5 vintages tasted 2010-2014, with lots of elegance and balance from start-to-finish.

Very nicely balanced wine with a very stony/mineral feel to it. Fruit is quite restrained. Very chablis in style.

Very elegant and smooth, rather light bodied. With fresh tropical fruits and fine minerality. nice acidity and fruit balance which make it into a wine for both solely drinking or pairing it with mildly flavored seafood like steamed fish. Will need more time to cellar before showing its best.

Senn-d off (part 2): Chablis at Nico Osteria (Chicago, IL): Spot-on stuff. Ripe and fat nose, with lots of tart white fruit and a slight bit of florals. This has really high density, and lots of richness, balanced by some searing acidity. On the back end, you get a slight bit of chalkiness which I found really intriguing. Super clean, precise, and linear. My wine of the evening.

Rockstars of Burgundy: Popcorn, floral, some dill/herbs and a little oak. Balances the herbal and ripe fruit quite well. Length is nice, more roundness than the other premier crus it was next to. This was nice, though a little unusual.

This was a great wine, and a perfect pairing with the Marenne d'Oleron M4 oysters.

30 minute decant as it warmed by the table.
Pale transparent gold in colour.
Light nose, pale citrus notes, orange peel.
Medium body, light oak influence, hint of cognac, orange side of citrus flavours, tangerine, hint of lime, mineral mouthfeel, long finish sublime and enjoyable.

Mature "Iconic Burgundy" dinner and tasting in Christie's board room, London. Limited note taking. (The only current wine at the dinner!)
Wonderful viscosity with ripe grapefruit, youthful heat, hint of asparagus and balanced by a steely mineral backbone. A superb (as one would expect) effort in a difficult vintage.
Drinking beautifully now and for perhaps another four years.

Dinner with a wino friend - 11 DRC Echezeaux, 11 Raveneau MdT 7 99 Vogue Moose (Harth Restaurant at Hilton Tysons corner, Mclean, Va): Start a bit tight. Citrus, lime, a hint of honey, limestone, rain water and saline. Not the same level of intensity as the 09 or 10 but more linear, a hint of unripe fruit, bright acidity, mineral and long finish. Quite enjoyable in classic Chablis way, a bit Dauvissat like plus Ravenau unctuosity.
