  • Tasted at Bern’s again, this bottle had a fill that was 2” below the shoulder. It had a red/purple center and red/tan rims. It’s color was amazingly strong. The nose was quite tight at first but slowly developed currants, wet stones, smoked meat, and plum notes.

This wine was ripe in the mouth but not at all overripe, which was impressive given its color. It was refined, well balanced, and had good length.

While this wine did not develop the integrated tannin of the last bottle, it was still attractive and great fun to drink.

  • Tasted at Berns, this bottle had a very low shoulder fill so it was a risk. However, this wine had a deep red center with red/orange rims. There was almost no nose at first but slowly it developed a low+/medium- intensity nose of violets, plum, clove, and classic wet rocks.

In the mouth, this was rich and ripe with great intensity and balance. It had rounded tannin, firm acidity, and great length. The fruit was impressive for any wine let alone a 100+ year old bottle! I could have passed for an '82.

It was shocking how good this wine was given its fill. I am usually a stickler for condition but this bottle certainly demonstrated that wine can show properly even with very low fills. This tower of power will last 20+ years easily. I would love to come across a well stored bottle!
