Dinner at Chengdu Impression (Chicago, IL): Hard to get a read on this tonight with so much riesling, and nebbiolo isn't exactly a good pairing with Sichuan food either. Comes off with high alcohol and a really disjoint character (and I tried to clear out my palate as best I could). Now this has always been the perennial dog in the Produttori lineup, but I couldn't really distinguish whether it was that playing out again tonight.

Fantastic nebbiolo after 4 hours in decanter. Head and shoulder ahead of 2005 Mortet Gevrey village with mature notes of leather and liquirice with beutiful sour-sweet cherries. For sure more development and tertiary notes to wait for but really delivered on all cylinders this evenening. WOTN.
got better and better with time (decanted 2.5 hours ahead, then drank over 2.5 hours more)... this was really tannic on the pnp but they receded with aeration... red / dark red fruit with high acidity at first but that also mellowed and allowed the body to come through... very nice in the end... would suggest 5 hours of air for now, or wait 5-7 years as I think this will improve for at least that long... have four left so hope I drink at least one in 2035 or later... made for the long haul

Decanted this puppy for 2 hours. Then put half back in the bottle. It was still great 2 days later. Needless to say this although drinking well now, will continue to mature and has a long life left. Not even starting to brick yet. Leather on the nose. Plum, ripe cherry with a good amount of fruit in the mouth. Medium body and long finish. Really lovely wine. The QPR on these Produttori is just wonderful.

This 50-family cooperative makes some of the finest Barbarescos, certainly the Riservas, and certainly for the money! Still tightly wound, delivering hints of what is in store from within its tannic envelope. Classy and tantalizing; if you can't wait 5 years, at least open it 8 hrs ahead :)

Decanted two hours. Could have used probably another hour or two. Pretty floral nose with a little bit of herbs mixed in. The palate is medium to full bodied, a little round, showing plum, cherry, spice cake and tar. Quite good. Still has a way to go - guessing 10 to 15 years.

Nose Medium intensity, primary aromas floral (roses?), and prominent red fruit, cherry, kirsch liquor, and some spice, hint of dried herbs, lavender. Tertiary sensations include earth.
Palate Dry, with high acidity, soft medium tannins, high alcohol and medium bodied. Flavour intensity becomes more than on the nose, pronounced. Red fruit, prominent sour cherry notes, some plum. Also some spiciness, pepper. Some cedar, wood impressions, cloves, maybe some earth-like tertiary aromas. Long finish.
Conclusions A well balanced wine, with well identifiable characteristics, complexity and a long finish. Overall an excellent wine, which should go well with a range of savoury foods, and also very nice to drink on its own. This wine will keep for many years to come and may improve further.

Opened with the 2008 Paje to see how a couple of the backward 2008 Riservas - compared with the relatively more accessible 2007, 2009 or 2011 Riservas for example - are tracking. The answer is - with a couple of hours of air and even better on the second evening - very well. To drink with food. More red fruited and floral than the Paje, particularly on the nose. Plenty of fruit volume and power. Plums, raspberries and cherries on the mouth. Quite primary, rich but elegant mainly red fruit. Persistent acids and powerful yet smooth tannins. It’ll no doubt improve, and open more, over the next 5+ years, but more than drinkable now.

HDH auction at Spiaggia; 9/19/2019-9/21/2019 (Chicago, IL): #10601. Stunning nose here, with slightly crunchy red fruit. The palate is still clamped a little tight with a moderate bitter edge because of the intense tannins. Nonetheless, this is incredibly aromatic and expressive on the nose and attack, and it's just a matter of aging this appropriately now (15 years at least?).

I know that everyone seems to love these wines and for some reason I find them always solid, but not truly great. This was opened 1.5 hours before pouring and spent an hour in the decanter. It's black cherry and mouth coating tannins and a kindof dark crispness to it. It seems to be missing just a bit of the je ne sais quoi to it but good for the price point.
Any year that Produttori bottles the single vineyard riservas is a treat and this one is no exception. From a cooler vintage, this one is a decade into its life and still is very much about aroma and structure. 2nd bottle of this vintage for me. Decanted and drunk over a couple of hours. Very dark. It showed heavy tar and anise on nose pretty much the entire time in the decanter. On the palate, notes of muted red fruit, spearmint and licorice developed with air. The fruit component never really completely developed. The finish was pretty tannic, somewhat fruitless and relatively short. Good bottle of wine and enjoyable but I am sure more cellaring (or a couple more hours in the decanter) will make this a better drinking Barbaresco.

Only given a few hours air and that wasn’t enough. A little shrill. Shows a little tar, some dried fruit. Got better with air. Still some very dry tannin. Still needs some time but give it plenty of air (>4hrs) and it’s enjoyable now.

Barbaresco semplicemente meraviglioso.
HDH auction at Spiaggia; 2/15/2018-2/17/2018 (Chicago, IL): Pretty consistent with the note from four days ago -- this is a very solid bottle of Produttori (better than the 2007s, for what I can remember), showing more of a black-fruited character. There's really nice riper fruit character on the palate as well. Good acidity and freshness here, but just too young.

Dinner at Osteria Langhe (Chicago, IL): A surprisingly dark and dense bottle; this is obviously nowhere close to where it should be. It seemed to be a little ornery, and the tannins a little scratchy, but there's really nice elements here to like as well. The fruit is a little bigger, but it's held in check nicely by the acidity. A fairly classic expression of nebbiolo that is at this point more tar than roses. Hold; it will only get better.

Fantastic nose! Rich, exotic fruits and spices. Red and black fruits as well as something tropical/Asian. Rich and full bodied. Similar in size and shape to the Pora. These aren’t as high-toned as the rest, but have more sweetness of fruit. This is complete and has plenty of pine/flowers/sous bois on the palate. 95 2017-2027.

Second in a side-by-side flight of all nine crus from this vintage. Tasting order recommended by Aldo Vacca. Tasted from small Bordeaux style glasses, which probably muted the bouquets, and decidedly accentuated alcohol.
Mostly muted bouquet. Similar taste profile to the Pora, with notes of rosehips, hibiscus, raspberry leaf tea, orange essence, red loam, rusting iron, and weathered clay pot, but a cut above it in concentration and depth. Somewhat more open on the palate, showing appealing texture and weight. Nicely balanced, medium plus acid, light tannins (by Barbaresco standards). In an early drinking window.

2nd in the lineup. Considerably more complex than Pora. Certainly more tannic. I thought was tasty and enjoyed it very much. Some deeper notes of sweet balsamics and touches of tar, Very pleasant.

Notes from night 3 - way too young on night 1 even with a 3 hour decant (served with grilled lamb chops). Clear meniscus with some color change to medium red center. Tar, menthol, black cherry, red currants on nose. On palate, black cherry, sour cherry, earthy with high acidity & medium+ body (might have guessed Barolo if tasted blind). Nice long finish. Lots of potential but wait a few years as Wine-Strategies recommended in note below. 92+ (should improve a few points with age).

{Visit to Produttori del Barbaresco} The final wine tasted during our meeting, Aldo watches my reactions to the first taste and, even if he doesn't say it, I know inside he's very proud of this lovely creation (I would not want to play poker against Aldo). Tasted immediately after the '09 Sordo, this is more of everything, yet very well balanced - as all of the PdB wines always are. More balsamic and earthy than the '09, it's also fresher, with tannins that are sweet and incredibly round. The finish is longer, too, but all of this today is just a glimpse into what it's going to be with just 2-3 more years of rest. The final sip really highlights the joyous interplay between the core of sweet fruits and the lively, fresh acidity. highly recommended
medium plum red, lots of clarity, slight brickish hue Nose: chocolate, berries, cranberries, tang, orange rind, thyme, bay leaf, vanilla, white pepper, slight oak Pal: cranberries, chocolate, orange rind, beef, thyme, bay leaf, vanilla, white pepper, touch oak, tannins Feel: medium Finish: medium TC8

Nebbiolo: 30 giorni di macerazione. Esplodono i fiori, lavanda, balsamico, resina, un bel frutto maturo. La bocca con la sua freschezza giovanile e il sale e i fiori... leggerissimo voluttuoso, pare l'ultimo accordo di a day in the life. lunghissimo indecifrabile nella sua scalpitante energia. 2008 Produttori Barbaresco Riserva Tasting: Generous high-toned bouquet like a garden of moderate flowers. Friendly but not exuberant; intoxicating. The soft fruit notes are enjoyable but don't have the oomph to outperform the tannic structure. Brown sugar notes delight on the finish.

Tasted @ Vinitaly 2013. Beautiful vintage with a lot of freshness, a medium to full body and beautiful overall balance. Nice classic aromatics of strawberries, tar, leather, some spices... Great acidity that keeps the wine fresh. Good density and length. Really nice Barbaresco.

Barolo and Barbaresco Tasting - Caro's Wnes (Caro's Wines, Auckland, New Zealand): Ripe fresh fennel - much riper and richer than the basic Barbaresco - very tannic and tarry, much more complex yet also light on its feet. The wine displays good clarity with a sweet entry, nice balance and dry ash on the finish.

2008 Produttori del Barbaresco Riserva Tasting (Wine Club – Santa Ana, CA): An interesting wine. Displays herbal notes of agave, currants, and raspberries. Juicy on the palate, but the fruit is subtle and the structure is softer than one would expect.
