It is sad in a way. When I started my journey into wine many years ago, the wines of Torres made quite an impression. Gran Coronas Black Label 1978 and 1983 obviously, but also (on a much humbler level) Coronas 1981 and 1986. Recent vintages of Mas La Plana (2005 and 2007) were major disappointments and this wine falls in that same category (on a much worse level). Sweet fruit, a little bit of everything and certainly not undrinkable but with with a gaping hole in the middle, no varietal typicity and therefore completely anonymous. Has my palate changed in the last 25 years? No doubt. Have the Torres wines deteriorated? No doubt.

Not a lot to say. spices, tart cherry and burnt rubber on the nose, and light on the palate with pepper and racy acidity. Not a lot of varietal character. Hollow on the midpalate and a bit thin on the finish. Cant find any trace of the cabernet. Generic in taste and appearance. Not bad, but not good either. Not really a QPR, although cheap it is possible to find better wines at this pricepoint. 55 + 9 + 14+5

Deep, dark and almost completely opaque ruby color with pale rims. A little reticent nose with aromas woody and toasty oak, ripe and sweet strawberry, some blackcurrant and a hint of roasted coffee beans. Soft, smooth and supple, yet with a hollow midpalate, making the wine come across thin and watery. Moderate acidity. Flavors of sweet (but not jammy) strawberry, some herbal nuances and a touch of woody oak. After some aeration the wine becomes a lot more oaky, the wood characteristics taking on a dominant role. Short, dull and watery finish with flavors of ripe cassis and spicy wood.
A boring, generic basic Spanish red. The wine should have only 14% of Cabernet Sauvignon and it should have been ageed in only 20% in new oak, yet the wine tastes like a poor-quality, heavily oaked bulk Cabernet. Underwhelming. Not recommended. A poor purchase at 9,99€.
