DD crossed the bridge: PnP. Mid-garnet. Complex nose, with red berries, spice, and earthy forest floor notes. Stems, but not stemmy. Clean and layered, with a classy, medium bodied palate. Hints of dark spice. Fine, integrated tannins. There’s a richness here which belies the vintage. Delicious tonight.

A really nice surprise here for the vintage I think this was opened in a good spot. Classic low alcohol wine at 13%, somewhat refreshing after a young and slightly hot GE 19 the week prior, stemmy, floral, autumnal. With air it went more floral and revealed some nice rose pedals. Drink now -2035.

Med ruby with slightly garnet rims. Very perfumed nose of violets and roses, candied fennel, spices, red fruit and cut hay. Notes of concentrated dark red fruit, cherries, plums, slight spices, but really pure and clean fruit. Dry long finish that goes on for a while. Med tannins with slight grip, this could use another 5-10 years, but was still very enjoyable PnP. Coming from an Arnoux Lachaux Clos Vougeot last night, the DRC Echezeaux was on a higher level. Impeccable balance and smoothness, everything held in equilibrium with a perfect concentration of fruit, a lot of complexity, and a long long finish. It is hard to say what could be improved, besides age to resolve the tannins. The wine closed down after a hour, which just showed its potential. Spectacular nose and wine, this was showing no weakness of the 2011 vintage.
This was my first DRC and my DRC Sherpa was there to help guide the experience. He noted that the wine was quintessential DRC with its candied fennel (saunf) as one of his distinguishing factors. He also noted that this was opened 5 years too young, but had all the checkmarks of a great DRC. Just an amazing wine that still met and exceeded my expectations despite the reputation that DRC holds.

PNP. Beautiful nose showing sandalwood, spice and red cherry. The palate is deep and rich for an 11, with a ton of dry extract that revealed itself in the drying finish. Very nice bottle drunk 10 years too early.
Rhône or Nôwhere 2022 (Malcom, Nebraska): Casually poured double-blind from a brown bag at the very end of the night while our heads were still spinning from the incredible quality on display. The senses were overloaded. It was blood lust. And then…I smelled my glass. An overwhelming feeling of serenity washed over me. It was almost as if a pair of noise-cancelling headphones were placed in my ears. This was different. It commanded attention. This wasn’t a wine from the Rhône. It smelled like Burgundy…and it was special. There was brilliant structure accompanying the most sublime fruits and exotic spices. I looked up at my buddy Matt who was also nosing his glass and our eyes met. He was also spellbound. He then quietly declared to me, “this is DRC”. I thought to myself, surely no. This late? After everything we just had?? Until now, I had never tried DRC so I had no frame of reference but Matt seemed pretty confident. Then some of the others started to fall into the trance. Everyone was falling over themselves. The bottle was pulled from the bag by our host. And there it was. A 2011 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Échézeaux. It was just beautiful. I was different now…almost like losing my virginity. What a sensational nightcap.

We treat ourselves on new year’s eve. The nose alone is amazing, roses, flowery, fruity too, with such complexity and elegance. The palate is awesome too, texture, richness, freshness, a concentration that is “sneaky” just like the amazing finish that keeps giving, one of my beat bottles this year.

Domaine de la Romanee conti 2018 Tasting and Dinner; 4/29/2021-4/30/2021 (Le Bernardin): In all, I found it a bit pedestrian for DRC. Generally nice aromatics, good balance, obviously well made. There was no lack of joy in this glass but I didn't find it as expressive as some of the wines next to it. That said, I enjoyed it much more than almost every other 2011 red burg I've had. It was not weak at all and its whole cluster character gave it substance that I found pleasing.
A little unfair to rate this among so many other incredible wines from the Domaine, but, in a way, this is the best type of comparison to truly size the character of the wine.

I was very impressed with how expressive the nose was and how open the palate felt. Spice, detail and the DRC stems were abundant. Young, but surprisingly forward.

Stems, green herbs (dill? Tarragon?), licorice, red fruits, vanilla... Five spice after an hour. All in an ethereal bouquet. Medium body, medium plus fine grained tannin, medium plus acidity.
Delicious, and incredibly fortunate to have tried it, but not something I'd seek out again.

Medium red color, low transparency. Rich aromas of red fruit with hints of vanilla and spice. A bit of herbal/earthy aroma emerges with some time. On the palate, there is a lot of polish and great integration of structure and flavor elements with a red fruit and cedar/tea/spice combination that carries into a long finish with very fine tannins just lurking under the surface. Not a bad candidate for an early peek at a DRC today. Drink or hold.

Still a baby, but I had pleasure drinking this wine, plenty of structure, but tannin seems well integrated, plenty of fruits to support. However, the eternal debate: is it worth the price...well yes for special occasion.

Pronounced nose, red fruits, bright and fresh, cherry, strawberry, raspberry, spice, cinnamon, clove. Oak and vanilla noticeable but restrained. Herbal undertone. Palate, notes of bright red fruits like the nose, long long finish, med+ acid, med+ tannins - softish and fine, well integrated. Notes of spice, cinnamon, clove, oak which like the nose is very restrained. Cherry, strawberry, cranberry, raspberry, very bright. Very young, oak needs time to integrate. I found the fruit and finish to be sweetish which was a surprise, I was expecting something much more restrained and austere given how young it is. Really delicious, profound wine, but sneaking suspicion that a similarly profound drinking experience could be had for half as much money.

So, my first DRC experience. Special treat and not something I expect to repeat regularly which is cool. OMG. What a nose. The nose goes on and on forever. I really could taste the smell. It has the ability to suck you in and ignore everything else around you. Super bouquet. Slightly perfumed. Spicy. Dark red and blue fruits. Fresh.
So well balanced on the palate. More savoury on the palate than the nose suggests. Red and blue Pinot fruits. Very bright. Very clean and precise. Some crystalline/ glass like on the palate.

Very special evening tonight. 12 bottles of Echézeaux – 2011 where enjoyed, semi – blind, by a small group of Bourgogne lovers. Short notes on each wine. DRC, Lieux – dits: 91% Les Poulaillères, 9% Clos St. Denis. Nose: typical DRC nose, no doubt, fine stone dust & minerals, stems, green herbs, touch oak and red flowers. Palate: very fine & pure fruit, raspberries, wild strawberries, cherries with some tarter cranberries and lingonberries, fine acidity, tremendous length and structure. (93 – 94+)

2011 DRC Tasting (Paris, France): Much deeper color than the Corton. Denser, more serious nose, but as expected very primary and not complex. Lovely spice and red fruit along with some floral notes. The palate is full of red and black fruit and is plush with no stem or green notes. Nice grip, balance and depth. Longer finish. For me the best DRC for the money in this range.

VVW eight 20111 GCs tasted blind, group's 6th, my 2nd favorite wine. Very DRC on the nose, easy to pick out blind, with seductive spice box notes, stems and sexy oak aromas in abundance. Dinner with a wino friend - 11 DRC Echezeaux, 11 Raveneau MdT 7 99 Vogue Moose (Harth Restaurant at Hilton Tysons corner, Mclean, Va): Captivating nose displaying crunch sappy red fruits, raspberry, blackberry, cranberry, sap, Vosne spices, mineral and a hint of coffee. Bright sappy red fruit driven palate impression, good concentration, vibrant and fresh, mineral, bright acidity, sweet tannins and seamless long finish. No noticeable green other a hint of stems. Drank over a couple of hours. Really hedonistic with very primary fruits.

Second in line of tonight’s six DRC 2011’s on the table. The wines had been decanted for 60 minutes prior to being poured. The Echezéaux has a somewhat weak nose, but opens up during the evening, and when we had the second pour it was up and running. Displaying red cherries, lingon berries, cranberries and a hint of raspberries. There is some oak and vanilla present. On the palate this has fat baby fruit, lingonberries, cranberries, displaying very good structure, quite harsh tannins, and clearly some green stuff, most likely from the stems. Overall a very promising young Échezéaux, that will require quite some time in the cellar.
