  • It took 2 hours for the bottle to open up and it gets better with the evening. Good bouquet, smooth in the mouth, what l look for in a fine burgundy. Still a lot of life in it.

  • 02755/18058, E/R/LT trio. Lightest but very approachable with sappy vintage red fruit and earthy character, very classically done. 93

  • Interestingly, a vintage of DRC Eche I don’t recall tasting. A sound bottle, that somehow didn’t move me. Good, but not as impressive as its pedigree would suggest.

  • Complex nose of old furniture, rosebuds and ripe stems all presenting simultaneously. The palate was a touch mature but well resolved and delicate, revealing overripe cherries and a meaty, smoky side that emerged after 45 minutes in the glass. A little reticent at moments, this was a refined and elegant expression.

  • Bourgogne classique, avec encore du fruit et une acidité bien vivante.
    nez floral
En bouche, on dénote les figues, la vanille et l'anis.
C'est très bon, mais pas "extraordinaire".

  • Delicious and pure, this wine is really rounding into shape. (16700/18058)

  • The lightest of three 1996 wines drank side by side (the others Roumier Bonnes Mares and Vogue Musigny).

Served blind, this had a floral nose that I immediately thought was whole bunch. A feminine palate, elegant and delicate. Mouth watering acidity, but quite lean. Some green herbs and vegetables. Developed some nice licorice with air. A real treat to try! From Ayub

  • Echezeaux Extravaganza: Henri Jayer and DRC 1976-2007 (La Grenouille, New York): Smokey nose and profile. Intense red cherry flavors. Delicious.

  • 1996 Burgundy Retrospective - The Last Session (Eddie V's - Tysons Corner, VA): Perfectly mature hedonistic nose displaying decadent slightly dry red fruit with a hint of black, plum, dry cherry, blackberry, noticeable stem, Vosne spice, cinnamon, Chinese medicine, soy, black truffle, caramel and mineral. Fully integrated palate, layers upon layers of slightly dry red and black fruit, silky and fluid, bright acidity, strong earth mineral and a long sweet black fruit driven finish with soy and black truffle at the end. I have often found DRC Echezeaux to be enjoyable yet not as “serious” as the other crus. This has to be the most complex DRC Echezeaux of my life. Incredible showing.

  • When it was poured against the 89 Richebourg, La Tache and 93 GE, it was much thinner on the palate. Nice aromatics of sweet red currant, potpourri and minerals. The fruit was slightly tart.

  • Echezeaux Extravaganza: Very similar vein to the 1995 but everything just a little better. There's a long way to go in its maturity curve and the prospect should be brighter than the 1995. Still I probably preferred the Rouget 96 to this.

  • Dark red fruit and high acidity on this bottle.

  • Coravin at Bouchon. My experience with DRC leans towards more cerebral pleasure that pure hedonism. Not this Echezeaux. After struggling to move from the spicy, floral aromatics you are rewarded with an outstanding combination of concentration and purity of the ripe, tart cherry fruit which married nicely with the vintage's strong acidity and secondary flavors from its maturity. Very elegant for Echezeaux despite all the concentration. While low on complexity compared to DRCs I've enjoyed...this wine is absolutely singing and delicious right now!

  • Bouchon - Yountville: Coravin by the glass at Bouchon. Outstanding right out of the bottle. The nose subsided as time passed. Seems to be at peak and will likely hold for some time.

  • Lovely perfumed and a bit spicy aromas with plenty of toasted oak. The latter became less pronounced after a while. Also dark and sweet red fruit on the nose. Extremely majestic and impressive on the palate. But how come it is so different from other wines from the same vineyard?

  • Last bottle of the three 96 DRC Echezeaux completing the trifecta. Drank on Christmas with 1996 Lafite Rothschild, and 1979 d'Yquem. What springs from the glass once again is ambrosial with the grace and elegance of a classic. The cherry blossoms and lavender petals entrance. Spice, red and black fruit merge to create pure pleasure.

  • 1996 Burgundy Grand Cru Dinner (Forlino's, One Fullerton, Singapore): I really liked this the last time round I tried it. Somehow though, while still very impressive, this bottle seemed bit less giving. It had a lovely DRC nose, full of sweet dark cherries and berries seasoned with earthy, brambly whole-cluster notes, with a waft of ginseng and a hint of florals in there somewhere as well. All fresh, lively aromas. Very nice. The palate opened with a real mouthful of fragrant wood-spice and notes of savoury boiled herbs alongside a dark cherry core. There was certainly plenty of depth there, and a nice clarity somewhat hiding behind a cloak of fine, slightly woody tannins, but it did seem a tad stubborn, with the bright acidity of the 1996 vintage still standing out quite starkly from all the other qualities of the wine. The finish was good, but not fantastic, with a twist of bittersweet herb and a little kiss of those woody tannins that gave the wine a velvety rasp on the backpalate. Unlike the last bottle, which seemed to be firing on all cylinders, this came across as a very textured, interesting wine that was just about starting to drink well, but was still a bit reticent at points. This would have been better a few years down the road.

  • DRC 1996 Dinner. Ex domaine bottle. Ruby red with a touch of browning at the rim, and quite translucent in colour. Almost slightly murky as well. Spicy nose of pepper, sandalwood, cherries and pomegranate. Tannins were quite bitter and rough actually. Good ripe red fruit, lots of cherries and berries, dark chocolate, mocha, woodspice, pepper and earth. Quite alarmingly, this went downhill after just an hour or so in the glass, taking on plenty of red tea, herbs, soy and leaf. After 3 hours, this was almost undrinkable, with only the tea leaf and bitter cherries left. I was pretty shocked at the way this disintegrated and if you read my other notes on the RSV, Richebourg and La Tache, all pretty much had the same journey. Alarming!

  • Still vibrant red fruit, berries and cherries. Hints of tannins left. Enjoyable.

  • High toned red fruit with lots of bright acidity. Acidity is more prominent than the fruit at this time. A little black tea leaf. With time and a decant the spice emerges from the 96. The acidity blows off and this becomes a real beauty. Elegance and grace. After 2 hours, it begins to close back up again.

  • Deep dark colour.
Clean ripe fragrance, dark fruits and mineral spice.
Coiled power, superb structure, very youthful. Flavours show hardly any sign of development, dark ripe fruits and gentle spice, excellent intensity. Surprisingly undeveloped. Delicious.

  • DRC tasting group
A beautiful wine with strength in its subtly and structure
Nose was continually evolving and interesting. Floral fully ripe and rich roses is what I recall being a prominent scent at one point.
The palate was lite but rich, full but not over powering. The finish was really lovely and long with hints of cola.
Nice way to start off the year.

  • Drunk at Otto e Mezzo in Hong Kong. This was the most austere of the wines we had during the evening but that should not be regarded as a negative. It is deeper and darker in colour than its compatriots from other DRC Echezeaux vintages. There is a fine sediment that hangs in the glass as if in suspended animation. On both the nose and the palate this wine has enormous character but it's just not as open and forgiving as other vintages. It was like that extremely serious friend you have; once you get to know them, the layers peel back and they begin to reveal themselves.

  • From magnum. Given the relatively full development of this wine, not surprising that it performed better in mag. The nose on this bottle offered a fresher and more clear expression of spice, faint floral notes, cola, and fruit. Red cherry on the smooth palate with intriguing hints of light licorice towards the end. A hint of tartness at the end.

  • Suffered from the comparison to the '99 and '90. Fell short of those vintages with respect to sophistication of the nose, and had a shorter and less complex finish. Noticeably more second characteristics of earth and slight gaminess versus the same wine from magnum later in the evening.

  • Vosne-Romanee Grand Crus for Michael and Peter's Birthdays 2015 (Gattopardo Restaurant, Tras Street, Singapore): By far the better of the two Echezeaux on the night, this was a really, really good wine, far outperforming its terroir. Blind, I actually guessed it was a DRC Richebourg, which is high praise indeed in my book. The nose here was telltale DRC. It really stood out from amidst the other Vosne makers on the night with its deep aromas of ripe stems and exotic wood spice swirling around tighter, more reserved notes of dark cherries and berries, and then meat and earthy mineral. After that big, burly nose, the palate was almost a surprise, showing a wonderful clarity and definition that was easily a match for the Romanee St-Vivants on the table. There was just a beautiful purity to the wine, with fresh 1996 acidity beginning to integrate fully with succulent flavours of red cherries and darker berries, which were then seasoned with some peppery spice on a long finish. DRC did really well in 1996, and this was a fine example. That peppery character and a slight bite of tannins, as if chewing into fresh cherry skins, were the only signs of Echezeaux character or rusticity on the wine. Otherwise, this very complete and really very fine for what it is. It still seems some 5-6 years away from its peak, even though it is clearly starting to drink well. Beyond that, given the fine bones it has, this could well be a rare Echezeaux that will age beautifully for just about forever. Excellent.

  • Absolutely the aromatics we dream of in a red Burgundy. Springing from the glass is a field of cherry, lavender and violets. Precise acidity, beautifully balanced, a wonderfully delicious treat.

  • Beautiful hazy, red color. Great nose, lots of bright red fruit, a little forest floor and mushroominess, but clearly a fruit focus wine. Lots of fresh acidity, IMO this has some years to go still. Not overly complex, just a very, very nice drink. Went well with pheasant, potatoes and rum flambéed mushooms. 93

  • SALONE DEL GUSTO 2014; 10/26/2014-10/30/2014 (LINGOTTO FIERE TORINO): Granato marroncino, colorito già molto ossidato e cupo.

  • Even a good effort from DRC is a superb wine giving proof here in a sniff and a taste as to why DRC is the King and/or Queen of Burgundy. Distinctly delicious and diverse spice notes merge with lavender, cherry blossom, and violet aromas. This structured and richly flavored beauty is pure finesse.

  • Drank over 3 hours. Big complex nose of spice, dark fruit, wood. Very structured, lots of grip. Dense. Very complex with dark fruit, lots of spice and a bit of mushroom. Long finish. Some tannin.

  • Saturday Tasting Group (Knightsbridge Wine Shop (Northbrook, IL)): A classically styled aged DRC (according to the group). A lot more going on than the '96 Rouget Echezeaux.
More extraction as a whole. Some light smoked deli meat action. Showing very well - improved quite a bit with some air in the bottle.
Round, earthy, shroomy. Good spice. Really complex while remaining lighter bodied.
Marmalade and tangerine notes coupled with really really light anise. Excellent finish. Layeres of light fruit, earth and spice. Hints of floral activity on the back end.

  • Red cherry, dark spice and earth on the nose with some rose petal. Dark red cherry on the palate along with iron and earth notes. Medium body and finish. Nice acidity and spice throughout.

  • Wine While Eating Well in Burgundy; 4/26/2010-4/30/2010 (Cote d'Or): Barely given more air than a pop-and-pour, this was very forward and accessible, clearly in a very good place for current consumption. Prototypically Vosne with lots of whole cluster spice. Very long and persistent with some mushroom emerging on the edge at the very end.

  • Kruger's 75th (Corsair): Still rather youthful. Great ripe nose of black fruits and asian spice. Dark and rich palate. Sweet black cherry, delicate tannins, and great acid. Doesn't quite show too much complexity now, but beautifully balanced.

  • This was a pristine bottle. Very clean appearance, with beautiful translucid red color and some slight fading at the rim. The nose was intoxicating, with sandalwood, cherries, berries, coffee beans, dark chocolate, and floral aromas. The palate was solid, perfectly balanced, rich, complex, and downright delicious. The finish was virtually endless, with complex overtones that brought back all the nuances found on the nose. A great bottle in what appears to be its peak performance. Drink now and in the next 2-4 years.

  • Decanted for 1.5 hours and then drank over the next hour from a pristine bottle. Quite an uplifting nose which needed a bit of coaxing. Full body with flavours of black cherries and raisins. Quite good intensity and length and it continues to open up through the night. Prob needs another 5-6 years to really be in business.

  • "Very Special" Dinner at Picholine OL (Picholine Wine Room, NYC): An incredibly complex and huge, but rather tightly wound, nose on this wine. I'd love to smell this wine in 5-10 more years. Notes of briars and cloves. Some coffee and olive juice notes as well. There's so much in this nose, just waiting to come out. On the palate, this is still a bit tight, with lovely fruit and serious earthiness. Mossy, treebark, earthiness. Gives more with food, but this is still tight at this point. Unfortunately the finish is a bit short, and perhaps a touch acidic. I still loved this wine, but think it needs more time. There was certainly debate as to whether this would ever be really great.

  • Advanced, muddy color. Maturing sous bois and a sweet, dark cherry fruit undercurrent. Characteristic '96 hard shell with dominant acidity still in the way of the fruit to some extent; still, a promising wine with lots of charm, though I'd imagine a well stored bottle would be pretty inaccessible.

  • $109 upon release. Brilliant color. It does not take much coaxing to bring up the fruit-driven aromatics - pure red cherry and strawberry, with a fresh floral note and a whiff of vanilla. In the mouth there's a touch of spice; lush and velvety soft, with ripe red fruit, fine acidity, and a graceful finish. New oak evident but not overpowering. It became firmer and less expressive / tighter over the course of a few hours. I'm sure this will age fairly well, developing nicely over the next 5-10? years where well stored.
