Out of my memory. Tasted at the Bodega and brought a bottle back home. My first encounter with the whites of Lopez de Heredia. 4 years in used, american oak barrels, 225 L . Fantastic! Lightly oxidised, a bit like fino but much fresher, with a hint of fruit hiding behind this wonderfull layers of flowers, nuts, butter, wax and this gracefull lightness. This so complex, charming and full of charakter, combining structure, power with this fragility. One of my favorites!

Delicately balancing between oxididation and a warm aged nose, this is still drinking well. Dry, not very complex but quite interesting. Oak does not seem prominent to me, at least compared to my old favourite traditional white Rioja, the Marques de Murrieta bottlings from 1981 and 1979.

Very interesting wine. Very different than all the white wines that I have tasted so far. Golden straw color. The fact that it is a 2002 itself makes it unique as I have not had white wines that old. Terrific bouquet. Citrus, oak, sandalwood. Medium body. Drinks much stronger than a traditional chardonnay or sauv blanc. Started the evening by drinking this. Should have waited. The wine is strong enough that it is best drunk when paired with food. Mushroom pasta or Salmon with mushroon sauce. Unique wine. Try it!

What a nose. I'm reminded simultaneously of riesling and an oxidized Jura, particularly the Philippe Bornard Les Chassagnes with its fungal funk. The '02 Gravonia somehow achieves an oxidative attitude while maintaining freshness and I get wafts of beeswax, petrol, sugar snap peas, and a touch of soil and vanilla. The palate has filled out a touch since I last put a bottle into play over a year ago. There's a fantastic balance of acid and the medium body that has a noticeable vanilla presence. I'm attracted to the Heredia whites for their novelty and I'll say this is going awfully well with herb goat cheese. The '02 is still young and vivacious and I would expect it to drink well for at least another five years. Good juice.

Beautiful amber to golden colur. In the nose the wine is rich, but quite complex with notes of honey, wax, nuts and, like someone remarked, Lanolin! On the palate, the wine is more than mediumbodied with good attack and structure, with notes of nuts, smoke and a fresh, long, citric and slightly bitter finish. A wine with lots of character, and plenty of nuances! I will have jamón serrano, olives and tortilla española with the wine the next time (and I will buy it again). Excellent!

In absolute defiance of a poor vintage, this wine succeeds with freshness and balance. Apricots, lemon bars and guava, flor, all on a bed of crushed minerals and saline-cured oak. Nearly medium-bodied on the palate, fresh and easy to drink, but composed (i.e. non-quaffer) and surprisingly structured. For just $25, what's not to like? recommended, drink thru 2018

Compared to the '03, this shows a bit more oak and slightly more oxidation. It's creamier. Still a fan, I just like the energy in the '03 a bit more right now. Still very floral and especially complex with air. Interesting wine.

Golden straw color with a tinge of tangerine due to oxidation. Floral on the nose with lemon peel, wilted wild flowers and candied melon; some herbal notes as well. Low viscosity, mild to medium acidity that is well integrated. Tasted over two days, but didn't change much after the first hour it was open. Fruit is subtle, but persistent although dominated by oak. Lemon zest in front and mid-palette following by lingering ginger through a medium finish. 88

Oh I don't know about this particular bottle. While I enjoyed singing the praises of last November's tasting, here I find the oak cloying and superficial, far from integrated. In fact that's about all I get here other than a cidery oxidation which is in total contrast to the new world slathering of wood, like an over the hill Meursault. There's a massive dose of vanilla with an undertow of petrol on the nose. After the oak fades in the mouth I get a whisper of ginger and fennel, or some sort of wild herb which does add intrigue. Despite the false sense of body the oak provides, the finish comes across as unsubstantial and fleeting. Why am I so unimpressed with this bottle, one of the great white wines of not only Rioja, but all of Spain? I feel like The Curmudgeon of Wine, a snob, jaded and unappreciative of the work in the vineyard and around the tanks, barrels, and vats, the long nights in the cellars as I've spoken somewhat ill of so many wines of late. I digress. This will improve with time as the 1990 is drinking ethereally right now. Viura, also known as macabeo.

100% Viura.

Great nose of mulled lemons, lanolin and white flowers. A complex wine on the palate with lemon oil, indian spices, wax and a hint of oak. I enjoyed this, but it might not be a great general audiance wine due to its complexity.

-- popped and poured -- -- tasted non-blind over a few hours --
NOSE: lots of oak – smells like French oak – bananas; light oxidation; gentle note of hay.
BODY: tan-golden color of medium to medium-deep depth; medium-light to medium bodied.
TASTE: slightly oily mouthfeel; very oaky; slightly oxidative in style; not very fruity; 12.5% alc. is not noticeable; lightly tannic; lots of mineral; adequate acidity, but not tart or juicy. Not as impressive as the previous time I had this wine, but still good.

Golden yellow color, mid-weight. Unusual nose of dirty socks, vanilla, pineapple, and celery with an underlying note of oxidation. Complex on the palate in a very come hither way. EWG @ Ración: A very nice wine. I think the 2001 might have been a little better but this is still wonderful, especially when you consider it is 10 ears old on release and under $25. Seems less oxidative than the 01 and showing more of an oak presence. Seems like a few years in the cellar could be in order.

Racion: Stinky sock at first, then citrus rind, with bags of gravel on the nose; clearly lighter than the '89 and '96 Tondonia's; I had a love/like relationship with this all night. I really liked this, but it just didn't have the same structure/pedigree as the 1st two Tondonia's. Really good, especially considering it's less than 1/2 the price of the others.

I've trained myself to stay away from European wines that hail from the 2002 vintage, partially because I know that the weather in some of the regions was pretty bad, but mostly because of the vintage charts. After tasting through some of those wines over the years I've realized it's a mistake to avoid that vintage, the strongest case so far being the '02 Heredia Gravonia ('02 Bordeaux is drinking very well right now). A light honey color prefaces a rich but refreshing nose of beeswax, pineapple, vanilla, string beans, and egg nog. This is so complex on the nose. Ultimate balance in the mouth with a very long finish of Madagascar vanilla beans and glycerin. I'm writing this after three days of being open so this is from memory, but that's no problem as this was unforgettable. I left two inches in the bottle which I just finished and at this point the wine is as rich as custard but dry with the vanilla having turned to a sort of creme brulee caramel that pretty much dominates the persona of the wine showing no oxidation. The Viura wines from Heredia are built for the long haul. Drink by 2026.

Wonderful oxidized flavors. Almonds, grains, and general nuttiness. It gets the high score because it's a very well made wine with proper balance of all of its components. However, it could be even greater if it had a long finish. As you'll find, this has wonderful flavors up until the mid-palate, and then completely dies. Washed into nothing, and finishes like water. So sad. Perhaps another vintage will be necessary to try! Went wonderfully with a handful of different cheese types. I preferred it with a strong stilton, but it worked well with manchego-like cheeses too.

-- popped and poured -- -- tasted non-blind over approx. one hour --
NOSE: waxy; slight to moderate petrol note; hint of walnut; not very fruity; complex; I like it.
BODY: brilliant orange-yellow color of medium+ intensity; medium-light bodied.
TASTE: intensely flavored; juicy and rich, but dry at the same time; citric, with a hint of oak; hint of oxidation; hint of red berry (red currant?); good acid; not lemony like the ’01 vintage of the same bottling; 12.5% alc. is well-hidden. Paired well with roasted chicken with a mustard & tarragon rub, as well as roasted carrots/potatoes/onions mix. Not quite as good as the 2001, but still low-level excellent. Great QPR if you like the slightly oxidative style.

Light to mid straw. Quite a high-toned nose. Typical, slightly oxidative, a touch of acetone with tropical top notes. Feels as if it's more of a chilled-down aperitif at the moment rather than a serious food wine - needs a little more time to relax I think. Quite a lot to it though - certainly has nearest but lacks the poise and richness of the 92 Tondonia alongside. ***1/2

A small 2002 Bordeaux Retrospective (Maude's Liquor Bar, Chicago IL): nose: showing more of a fruitful quality than one would expect from LdH(though this is far from juicy) with more citrus, navel oranges, and white fruits along with waxy tones and some minerals. Not as deep either right now though.
taste: Silky and classy medium/full body with medium+ acidity that gives this a good spine. Youthful with really good balance and tones of navel oranges, wax, citrus and some white fruits as well.
overall: This is young. It is more upfront on the LdH scale, but it also has some baby fat on it. I would like to see where this goes in another 10 years.

2002 Bordeaux - 10 Year Retrospective (Maude's Liquor Bar - Chicago, IL): A really nice buy under $20. At such a young age, some of the complexities that usually develop in LdH blanco's hadn't materialized yet, but this was still pretty nice. Almond, fig, and apple butter tones on nose were slightly oxidative (as expected) in nature. The palate was waxy with banana peel, sweet lemon, herb and pear tones baked together. Will probably go pickup more of this - has a nice future ahead of it.

Nutty oxidation along with honey, wax, spice, and a sweet floral component. Not as bitter on the palate as the 2001, more elegant and refined. Worked well with collard greens and garlic-breaded chicken which is hard for some wines. $25 price tag isn't bad either, its what a white Crianza should be, not the harsh battery acid that sells for $10 / bottle. WK A-.

Robe jaune presque or, premier nez rancio.

Very interesting wine with a remarkably morbid character. The fruit is almost entirely gone, the bouquet dominanted by intense tertiary aromas. Viura as a grape-varietal shows surprisingly slim and refined. The wine has quite a bit of minerality and still a lively acidity. However, you need to be a rather experienced wine-drinker in order to fully enjoy this wine.

Full straw to pale golden yellow. Lovely bright, fragrant nose, slightly oxidative and floral with a nice scent of almond blossom. Nose hints at richness or even sweetness but the palate is nicely dry with a rich attack and a slightly oily, viscous texture across th emid-palate before tightening and finishing quite long and minerally. Really very nice indeed and a good bridge between the more modern and the traditional oxidative style of Rioja - definately in the latter camp but not so full-on that it will scare the novice. ***

87 Personal. Color amarillo dorado.

Pale gold and slightly developed. An evocative nose with tropical notes of coconut, melon and lemon rind, slightly honeyed with a faint oxidative streak. Round and a bit oily on the midpalate, finishing with a refreshing citric tang and pronounced salinity balanced against delicate notes of almond and a lingering impression of marzipan-like sweetness. The American oak is somewhat less pronounced than I recall in prior vintages, and very well integrated.
The Lopez cuvees are generally quite consistent from vintage-to-vintage due to their blending regimen, and this Gravonia strikes me as very good, if not quite as amazing as the wonderful '01.

100% Viura.

Beautiful golden colour. Gorgeous on the nose with sweet pineapple pie, honey and hazelnuts. Excellent acidity and viscous texture with long aftertaste. It got better after 2 hours, so decant it in advance for at least 1 hour. Excellent!

Buttery, toasty nose, lots of oak and almost stewed lemon. Very mature, lots of oak evident. Layered and complex palate, really gorgeous, lots of drinkability despite the powerful oak. Remains fresh. Probably needs drinking soon though. Excellent

Worked well with collard greens and garlic-breaded chicken which is hard for some wines. $25 price tag isn't bad either, its what a white Crianza should be, not the harsh battery acid that sells for $10 / bottle.
