Bordeaux September 2023 Straigt out of the bottle ... . but please decante these drc, let them stand up for 3-4 days and use a very good filter and leave the last sip and deposit in the bottle, it's makes a huge difference .... it's a great great wine, mind crossing, very much it's own - deep cool fruit, chewy texture, I had less japanese soja on this than normal ... . the bouquet is so classy - loved it !Agree on the remarks, it's a La Tache easier to understand / Drink than normal, it just a brilliant wine. Drink 2023-2036

Brilliant. Nose is 99, constantly evolving over the course of dinner. Heavily red fruited, strawberry, herbs, spices like clove, so beautiful. Palate med+ body but deep and amazing intensity, interesting core of mineral, iron, cherry, spices like cinnamon, perfect balance. Good acid, excellent with cassoulet. Loved this. Wide open and very showy. Worth it? No question.

Dinner with the wine group - La Tache Dinner (Cindy's Place): Light ruby, slightly cloudy; intense aromatics, like beyond belief, spice, strawberry, floral, a little clove and cinnamon; palate is medium bodied, medium-plus acidity, strawberry, some spice, not quite as crazy as the nose but still well balanced with excellent acidity and balanced alcohol; finish is long. Drinking well now. 97-98

Paired against ‘99 Rousseau Chambertin and ‘17 Forey Gaudichots. WOTN, if only marginally so given the stiff competition. From the first pour plenty of DRC stemmy notes and sous bois. Decayed black cherry, black tea, oolong tea, caramel and eventual Asian spice box. Incredibly smooth if slightly more angular than the ‘00 I drank last year. At the 3 hour mark this faded so drink your bottles now. 98 pts.

Powerful and tense showing firmer blackberry fruits in a more masculine style. Sleek texture and a touch earthy. Feels a bit wounded up and compacted relative to the 2000 served along side in this flight. Clear room for upside if this relaxes and opens up with more time. This does show breed and further potential.

La Tache and '96 Champagne (Atlanta): Pop and rest. Beautiful and balanced. Incredible nose. Can't go wrong here. Many felt this was WOTF, but I had it a close second. It was all there and had tons of beauty, but I love the muscular power of the '99.

96/01/02 flight. The weakest of the flight and not as good as an 01 Richebourg in the next flight. This was tasty enough with attractive cherry, tea and plenty of whole cluster stem. The wine just didn't have the intensity, clarity and seamlessness of the other DRC bottles this evening.

Happy Birthday to Me (Oriole - Chicago IL): Alongside the 96 and 02 vintages. Sweet and savory spice with lots of red fruit, 2001's leaner vintage character came through here, with good+ length and good weight. The 2001 Richebourg in the next flight was actually more enjoyable tonight.

The wine felt muted, a bit brown around the edges. At first I thought it was just a bit closed and rustic on the edges as some 01 La Tache can be. The nose was a very dark liquor note with spice and sweet earth with a touch of acrylic, the perfume is mild and doesn’t have the intensity of most la tache. With some air you get a bit of deeper muddled berry, orange peel with some rustic borders on the way. It starts to pick up a bit of alcohol richness but it never really goes anywhere. Bottle just seemed tired. Struggled to get out of bed for class and just fell on the floor.

La Tāche 1985-2010 Vertical NYC (Le Pavillon NYC): A little funky notes on the start but dispersed quickly after. Fresh strawberry notes, clean, a similar restrained figure as 2010, surprisingly has more depth than 2000 of the same flight. It is a beautiful wine!

La Tāche Dinner (RPM Steak - Chicago IL): Middle La Tâche flight, alongside 1998. Intensely refine aromatic start with savory and sweet spice, beautifully elegant and classically Vosne. So 2001. In a very good spot. Lovely red floral aromas with pretty backing spices. Delicious flavors of strawberry, cherry, and a light hint of rhubarb. A touch firm on the palate, yet so well integrated creating beautiful texture with a slight bite. More delicate and nuanced on the palate vs the nose. June Birthday dinner at Tocco.

A Multi Birthday Celebration (Tocco - Winnetka IL): So much fresh and mature red cherry and berry start-to-finish, with even more spice unfolding with more time in glass. A bit cloudier and less pristinely fresh vs some of the best bottles I have had of this typically great wine, but still very good tonight, even if not in my evening's "top 5."

Justin's bachelor party (Gravitas - Washington, DC): Fully mature complex nose displaying subtle black fruit with a hint of red, blackberry, cooked mixed berries, stewed tomato, strong soy, sous bois, DRC stem, Chinese herbal medicine, Vosne spice, red tea and earth. Fully integrated palate, very finely layered slightly dry and stewed red and black fruit, nicely detailed and weightless, perfect amount of acidity, stemmy mineral and a seamless long stewed red and black fruit driven finish with Chinese herbal medicine and soy at the end. This is drinking beautifully clearly expressing the vineyard and the vintage. Excellent showing but no need to wait.

Domaine de la Romanee conti 2018 Tasting and Dinner; 4/29/2021-4/30/2021 (Le Bernardin): Classic La Tache flavors with a good combination of grace and power. That said, on the night, the 2000 was better (which is a bit of a shock). In comparison, some of what was missing from the 2001 comes into focus, specifically the various notes which needed to come together in perfect harmony were just a slight bit off. This might be just bottle variation, but at the level this wine wants to play it was outdone by its 2000 brother.

Out of today’s 2001 DRC horizontal all of the bottles but two were removed from an assortment case. The superb Echezeaux and this La Tâche were from a different source. Unfortunately this bottle wasn’t as pristine an example as the others and was comparatively at a disadvantage. A touch cloudy in the glass, which isn’t uncommon, but a bit of a muted nose, contextually, and a more restrained showing overall. I think I see them same bready note as my last note on this many years ago. The Riche has better spice and the RSV has more elegant floral detail. This is something between the two, and on its own would be very beautiful and special, which it is, it’s just in excellent company in this lineup and sitting beside a spellbinding RC…

6 Decades of La Tache: The 2001 La Tâche is showing really well at the moment, still sitting in early maturity but expressive, lively, lovely. Pure, clean cherry and rose nose, billowy and saturating but fine. The palate is packed with red apple peel and Vosne spice, managing the usual La Tâche trick of being packed but light, really fanning out on the finish.

DRC stems, red fruit, flowers, perfume and Vosne Spice. The palate is just surreal with a combination of weightless power, mouth-coating tension and substantial density. My best 01 La Tache experience out of three lucky ocassions. 96-97

A highly-perfumed nose of aniseed, sandalwood, freshly grated ginger, Hoisin and red and black fruits. It is deep and penetrating, with the most sensual of textures. It builds through the palate, fanning out on the finish, leaving an exotic spice calling card. Drinking wonderfully well with plenty more in the tank.

Fully integrated palate, very finely layered subtle black fruit, very precise, detailed and airy, perfect amount of acidity and mineral, and a seamless long subtle black fruit driven finish with stem and perfume at the end. Not a big concentrated La Tache but very precise, harmonious and detailed. Drinking beautifully but can improve for another decade gating sweetness and sous bois.

Dégustation Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Verticale 2016, avec Déjeuner (1243 Bourgogne Society - Beaune): This has always been a very complex wine that demands your attention, and today's bottles were no exception. Burly red fruit with savory spice and so much tannin and earth that some people thought this much too young (my vote), while others thought it advanced (not so much). This is so powerful without being a powerhouse, and I expect will reward lots more cellar time. At least that is my plan for the two bottles resting in my cellar. 93 points based on today's assessment, but I think the wine is substantively even better.

2001 vs 2002 DRC tasting with a few others; 10/20/2018-10/21/2018 (Marcel's by Robert Wiedmaier, DC and Bryan's house): Medium expressive nose displaying sweet black fruit, blackberry candy, black cherry, licorice, caramel. a hint of stem, rose, Vosne spice, Tiequayin tea, Chinese medicine and earth. There is a hint of oxidative note that I associate with the 01 reds. Fully integrated palate, subtle sweet black fruit, silky and polished, medium acidity, medium mineral, nicely integrated tannins and a medium to long sweet black fruit driven finish. Not terribly expressive.

A gift of a dinner for Joao's 40th (The Papies, Elizabeth St, London): #05958. A majestic wine. We opened and left it to rest for a good hour as it felt it needed its time to open up. And once it hit its stride it delivered an effortless performance, a lesson in a way n why this wine is considered to be among the best ever made. Mixed spice on the nose, light cinnamon. Dark side to the fruit with a smoky almost roast meat edge. Elegant vibrant and really just effortless beauty. We can go on and on here but really this could well be a perfect wine. Being a La Tâche though the bar is higher hence "only" a 99 from us and what an experience.

Second time trying the 01 la tache. To be fair, it is not as beautiful as the 01 rsv. Pack of spice, red fruit, wild berries, prunes and tea on the nose and palate. Palate is deep with wild berries and tea but it lacks the vivicity and complexity of a la tache. Still a great wine but the 01 rsv is the crowds favourite between the two.

The 01' La Tache boldly shows it's Vosne Spice, amplified to the point it seems almost on fire aromatically. While it's not the most pleasing smell for me (another taster called it talc powder), it haunts and piques curiosity all the same. Tasted along with a 99' Roumier Bonne Mares, it similarly packs tons of complex fruit and concentration in an elegant package, maybe a bit more floral and herbal than the Roumier, though similar complexity.

Right out of the gate, you wonder what all the fuss is about. But make no mistake, with a couple hours of air this is the real deal. Beautiful, big, billowing Vosne spice, smoke, cherry, and earth. Fat and silky in the mouth. Still quite young - on its way up. Delicious and gulpable. 95-96ish now, room to grow. Thanks Brad!

Had this at the tusk dinner at PAsquale Jones. I continue to be a big fan of this wine. In a very accessible place at the moment from the first taste. Beautiful light red color. The nose was of Violets and strawberries. The wine continued to get better as the night went on. A bit more feminine for a la tache with this age on it particularly in comparison to the 1999 roumier BM that followed.

My score is a bit low for a la tache because the wine is a bit advanced (italian source). Nevertheless the wine expresses beautiful red fruit and the vr terrior in every sense. The nose and palate are complex but it lacks the punch and intensity of a la tache (could be storage issue). There is some acidity in the backdrop to support the wine. As the wine was served blind, I thought its a 95 rsv from a very good maker. If thats really the case, it is a 94-95 pt to me. As a La Tache, it slightly disappoints tonight.

I thought there was just a little too much coffee oxidation showing on this wine and I have certainly had better bottles of this. The fruit is all sweet cherry, cranberry and pomegranate. It does have very good intensity and shape in the mouth and length is very good.

Dark, cloudy, brooding. Reticent, wood smoke, coal tar soap, spice, a touch of green stems, orange rind, cool. There is a latent depth to this wine but a a more knowledgeable taster than I commented it was a wine that said more about the characteristics that are lacking rather than ones it has. Latent but a vintage where there is gives way to acid A wine of structure that currently lacks the flesh on its bones

Geez louise, have I somehow managed to have this wine three times? Apparently so. And apparently it just keeps getting bigger and bigger. Right out of the gate, this is a hell of a beast. Pungent scents combining a strong green stemmy character with fruit so deep in tone and the whole array with such amplitude that the aroma feels practically weighty. These are seriously busy aromatics. The stemminess is very primary but it shows some more development through all the other stuff that oscillates in and out, a little sweet spice and some sweet maple sap. The tannin is monstrous and clenched - this is probably a decade or more away from approaching any semblance of elegance - but the fruit is like the aroma suggests, deep, dark (more blackberry than red berry), sapid, with the piercing intensity of a reduction sauce somehow managing to balance out that tannic muscle. Still way too young for primetime especially with that prominent stemmy signature - there is scaffolding everywhere - but what are you going to do? It was there. #01356.

2001 Vosne-Romanée Grand Cru Dinner (Imperial Treasure Teochew, Takashimaya): A rather rich, opulent expression of La Tâche, this was surprising given the context of the vintage and the genererally finer and more minerally than usual tones on the wines that came before, but boy was it ever good. It had a dazzling nose, wafting out of the glass in arresting tones of sweet blueberries and dried plums, fragrant spice and smoky mineral, rich earthy notes that brought to mind a forest after a spring shower, and then perfumed drifts of fresh cut flowers. Wow. One always expects a fantastic nose on a La Tâche, but even then, this was breathtaking. Like the nose, the first impression on the palate was one of weight and stuffing, with wonderfully deep draws of dark cherries and berries infused with warm spice and gentle earthy notes filling the mouth beautifully. Yet in true La Tâche fashion, this carried its weight effortlessly, with juicy acidity and beautifully silky tannins lending it a wonderful sense of purity and finesse. This was a crazy delicious wine, yet one that oozed class beneath its hedonistic surface. It probably suffered a little from being placed next to a truly superb bottle of 2001 Romanée-Conti, perhaps the only wine in a sterling line-up that could have knocked this down a peg. Even with all its airy elegance and precision, the La Tâche seemed almost like a weightlifter next to the RC’s supremely graceful gymnast of a palate. On its own though, absolutely superb and starting to drink very nicely indeed.

Drank along with a 2000 Harlan and '95 Petrus. An amazing night with a tour de force of some of the great wines of the world. The La Tache showed beautifully well. Sheer class, with an incredible nose of rose petals. This was tight to begin with, but evolved in the glass. We should have decanted it, but nevertheless this beginning to get into it's drinking window. Glad I have the rest of the half case, because if will let it sit for some time.

#17244. Opened left to rest for 30 minutes and served.Glorious bottle! Albeit we looked a bit like star struck teenagers in its presence.. Beautiful on the nose, red fruits, light strawberry, light roses too, spice, light smoky edge. Beautiful and expressive nose and we just kept on smiling about it. On the palate it took its time to develop but it was just perfectly balanced, with good fruit, firm backbone and solid core. Magnificent wine and we are still in awe of it. 97?98?99? and has lots of life ahead of it. Magical.
Would we have loved it as much if it was tasted blind? We love blind tastings but do believe wines of this level should be consumed with the knowledge of what it is.

La Tache Dinner at Everest (Everest Chicago): Drank over 4 hours. Initially this was a bit lean and tight, but opened quickly and kept improving over time. The last sip was the best. Quite sweet and primary red and black fruit. Loads of spice and a 'grapey' quality. A graham cracker note on the nose was kind of fun. Great structure and balance with the fruit. This has a long way to go and is much improved from the bottle I had in 2010. Wonderfully long finish with outstanding grip.

A great DRC, more precise and reserved than I would expect from a La Tache which to me is a good thing. Very primary with incredible complexity that builds in the glass along with its underlying power. Sadly I did not have a large pour and not enough time to see it through for as long as I would have liked.

This is the third or fourth time I have had this wine. Interesting in the context of 2 older La Tache. This was clearly the youngest and most out of its true element. In this dinner it was simply too young. It is a beautiful wine although I am not sure it has the fortitude to ever be a classic of this bottling. It smells so primary and young at this point and in this context that it almost seems barrel-sample like. Very red fruited and not showing much in the way of Vosne spice. Quite round and opulent in texture. On its own I think this would show much better but it stands out for being cute in a line-up of super models. There is no rush to judgment on this wine and given its heady price I would certainly wait and look for development that gives it more than what it offers up at this juncture.

Wednesday Night Burgundies (Bar Boulud): This is much more reticent and closed in on itself than it was last year. "Verrrrry structured" was the first thing I wrote down in my notes, both from tannin and some edgy acidity that were keeping a tight grip on everything else. It still managed to show some difficult-to-describe non-fruit flavors in the savory-and-spice camp, but for the most part it was sort of wound up in all that muscle. #02938.

A wine with the most beguiling perfumed nose that grew more and more haunting, already showing a hint of maturity, the very solid acidity almost melting into soft tannins and a finish that lasted all afternoon. My first La Tache, I'm sure its not 'the best' example, but I doubt many have enjoyed this wine more than we did today. Quite a privilege to drink.

Drank over 2 hours. Initially closed nose that opened after about an hour. Pretty red fruits, plenty of spice on nose. Quite austere on the palate. After lots of swirling it was still holding back. Deep flavors of red fruit and spice box are there, but just didn't fill the mouth the way I wanted. I can tell this is a great wine, maybe I caught it on an off day. Even so, the finish somehow lingered and I was still thinking about the wine hours later. Will try this again in a few years.

Champagnes and Burgundies (Gramercy Tavern): This was impressive, but also somewhat reserved, showing what it has to offer in more cumulative fashion from sip to sip than the immediate knockout effect of the Richebourg. You have to pay attention. It showed less fruit than its brethren, probably because La Tâche seems to be Ground Zero for the middle eastern spice-bazaar characteristics of Vosne-Romanée, which played a much bigger role in the ultimate flavor (and aroma) here than the fruit did. The effect was a fractal of spices amidst pale reddish fruit, easily making this the most detailed and complex wine in the lineup. But part of the effect of the spiciness and the more reserved fruit was to give this a dustier, grittier texture than the other wines -- not as silky or pampering, making this a little less hedonistic and a little more cerebral than the others. #02155.

Stark contrast to the 2000 -- this was all red fruits, light color, and soft compared to the bruising (by comparison), dark, black fruit 2000. I prefer the 2000 at the moment, but this wine has a structure and ethereal quality that may keep it going long after the 2000 has faded away. Maybe. B+

A fresh nose of red berries soon begins to reveal amazing amounts of smokiness and elegant spices as well as flowers: lavender, clove, roses and christmas spices. Just amazingly complex. Trevor and I served this wine blind, and although people zeroed in on the vintage as either 2000 or 2001, no one guessed the wine, even after I said it rhymed with “Grenache.” I chalk this up to it being generally lackluster and not what one would expect from the vineyard. It was tasty, with vibrant cherry and obvious Vosne spice and a nice balance, but the nose lacked any fireworks and the wine was a touch tart and short on the palate.

light and delicate, this is burgundy at its finest! Jamie Kutch made one of the most interesting comments, the wine had a bit of spearmint. Not a lot, just enough to make for a very interesting quality. I actually found the flavor to be unique (for this wine) and quite endearing. Floral, tiny tiny touch of asian spices, dark black cherry, great acidity, nice long finish

DRC Tasting at Classics Restaurant: Bright, candied red fruits with plenty of underbrush and a darker black cherry streak with Asian spice. Velvety, and with a good core, but so compressed and painfully restrained which comes through on the short finish. Largely structured with grape tannin and characteristic '01 acidity. Plenty of potential, but should be forgotten for 10+ years. ***+

Straigt out of the bottle ... . but please decante these drc, let them stand up for 3-4 days and use a very good filter and leave the last sip and deposit in the bottle, it's makes a huge difference .... it's a great great wine, mind crossing, very much it's own - deep cool fruit, chewy texture, I had less japanese soja on this than normal ... . the bouquet is so classy - loved it !Agree on the remarks, it's a La Tache easier to understand / Drink than normal, it just a brilliant wine.

Browning on the rim. Appears older than it is. Asian Spice, mineral, stems and floral notes. Red fruited. Rich with good balance and length.

There is no rush to judgment on this wine and given its heady price I would certainly wait and look for development that gives it more than what it offers up at this juncture.

no proper notes - initially gave it 97p, but it was a long time ago and i don't think it was a genuine score which reflected the quality of the wine, but it was then the best pinot i had tasted.

WWS 2012 - a few TNs including DRCs, Coche Dury, Rousseau and others; 11/8/2012-11/11/2012 (Villa D’este, Lake Como): A great contrast to the 99 RSV, although expressive, a bit more subtle. Blackberries, oolong tea, a hint of licorice, stem and vosne spice. Airy and silky palate. Quite expressive and precise. A great example of La Tache. Drinking beautifully, I need to find some.

Just too young. Asian spice, tea, vosne romanee, elegant and pure, not a flaw to be found. Missing the secondary characteristics And weight, power. Maybe just emerging from a shut down phase. Lovely, but i regret opening just a bit.

Fragile and high-toned nose but beautiful with nice cherry notes. On the palate, this is lovely - slightly lacking in density, but show purity and grace. Not for hedonists but more for real burgheads.

New Year's Eve 2009 (Chicago IL): Opened roughly 6 1/2 hours before serving with a total of about 2 hours sitting in a decanter. Very seductive aromatics of firm red berries, violets, clove, anise, and a touch of orange peel. At first not very giving on the palate, though by the end of evening it opened up magnificently. Beautiful baking spice thoughout the very long finish. Has everything going for it. I hope to try this again in another decade or so.

New Years 2009 (Chicago, IL): High-pitched red and orange fruits - spice and floral perfume notes. Big, complex aromatics. Patrician styling.

In the mouth this is just as interesting and it is indeed very drinkable today making me think of the mid-nineties. Great balance. Even better than the 96 I had last year.

Plenty of potential, but should be forgotten for 10+ years. ***+
