Red fruit, herbs, acid. Still surprisingly fresh, though it shows its age with some brown sugar. The American oak is invisible. Terrific with food. Not profound but really nice.

A perfectly clean bottle of 45 year old Rioja. Drank out of Riedel burgundy glass, virtually no reductive elements when popped and poured and minimal sediment. Bricking color but still a pure garnet core. Nose of strawberry, dried cherry, roses, saddle leather, spice and perhaps a touch of lifted crab apple or menthol. Palate still plenty of fruit considering the age with strawberry, cherry, cut wood, roses, fennel seed and cinnamon. Medium acid, tannin fully resolved, virtually no alcohol, long finish. Awesome, can't believe how clean this bottle was. Drinking in its prime.

A very nice older rioja...a little better than average for this age. Bricked around the rim. Initial pickle juice aroma blows off with air, decaying leaves, smoke, tobacco, prunes, and plums on the palate.

Leo's Blind Tasting Group - Oct '15 edition (Ben's): Very pretty, fully mature and drinking very nicely now. Lots of complexity here, with an array of spices, dried flowers, old wood, and red apple fruit on the nose and palate, and more savoury soy and other umami flavours emerging with a bit more air. It comes across a touch soft on the palate, without the same level of acidity and focus as the '75 Viña Real, but still a really great bottle.

Typical characteristics of a mature rioja. Palate was slightly below medium in weight. An exceptionally long finish. Fantastic wine and even better with food.

Wonderfully fragrant nose of cherries, cranberries, exotic spice, very floral too. Substantial palate revealing smoked ham, orange peel, mocca, lots of red berries, Christmaspudding, boudin noir. Soft, transparent, well defined finish, showing hardly any oak nor tannines. Alive and kicking, perfect drinking.

Fantastic nose. Forest floor, strawberry preserve, glue, vanilla, oak. Pinot-colour. Finish is slightly clipped, alas, but this wine is fine-grained, clear and pure. Very nice!

Rioja @ 28-50: Nicely mocha-coffee scented nose. A touch of orange, but altogether fresher and denser and more vigorous. Dense and rich and lovely. ****1/2

Brick color with medium depth of color. Medium body with round well integrated tannins. Great fruit with cherries and cranberry dominating. This wine was alive, vibrant and smooth.

Wine Education Service - Mature Rioja: Light brown/orange with a hint of green. A vegetal nose with raisin notes. Sweet tasting, good acidity, delicate, a hint of fruit.
