Pedro's visit to Tucson: Tasted alongside the '98 and '02 DRC GE. I last wrote a note on this wine 10 years ago, which time I gave it 98 points, a score I rarely have given. I noted that the wine should be great in "10 years". Well, it did not disappoint!. What a wine. Some bricking on the rim, light ruby core. The nose is ethereal, with sous bois, asian spice, soy, red fruit, stems. Wonderful silky texture and lingering finish. A very complete wine. Although I didn't score the wine 98 points as before, I think I was probably too generous at that time. This wine was my favorite of the trio, all of which were very good wines.

Drinking beautifully after 32 years in the bottle I last had this in 2010 and it was nowhere near ready. Now it is sweet and pretty with nicely emerging earth notes and a hint of oatmeal. Some cool notes add to a very smooth profile. This will have you smiling

This bottle started off slightly more mature than others. Mushroom. But good length and intensity. Not tired in the back. Over time more red fruits characteristics emerged surprisingly. Great evolution in the glass.

10/09/05/03/02/00/98/90 vertical. A nearly perfect bottle of wine with rich, concentrated, sweet black fruit that has vintage ripeness and 30+ year evolution and complexity. Dizzying whole cluster aromatics. Still so fresh. Complete and long. Thanks, Ken K.

It needs no introduction for 90 DRC which gives you that 0 to 100kph thrill right out at the gate. Sweet stems, red currant, perfume, and flowers. Basically everything you want in a great Burg is there. It builds up complexity and depth on the palate in each consecutive pour. The precise sweetness is mesmerizing.

From Elena: A special occasion. DRC 1990 Grand Echezaux. Opened 1hr ago. Perfect to drink now but can wait another 50 years. Tea leaves and roses, a definite floral note. Great depth and length. A wow wine. Just the right level of sweetness. Aristocratic elegance. Complexity without arrogance. A happy moment in the current doom and gloom.

A small gathering of friends - 71 Cristal, 08 Dom, 90 DRC GE, 01 Rayas, 90 Monfortino and etc. (Officina - Washington D.C.): Perfectly mature yet vibrant nose displaying ripe black fruit, blackberry, black cherry, black plum, stewed tomato, sous bois, Chinese medicine, caramel, black truffle, cinnamon, clove, root beer, sap and earth. Beautifully integrated palate, very finely layered ripe black fruit, good acidity, earthy mineral and a long sweet black fruit driven finish with a hint of Chinese medicine and cinnamon at the end. It lacks the weight and complexity of the 90 La Tache. Nevertheless, absolute joy to drink.

Bouquet is fantastic, distinctly DRC and distinctly ‘90, although a little darker. Stems have fully integrated and this is now a dense perfume. Very fresh and pure. Palate is very ripe and has a wallop of red and black cherry up front. Youthful but has some more developed moutcoating and long flavours. Lush and hedonistic but has spice detail and a rich texture. Still a wine you can chew on. Tannins softening up a bit but still pretty big.

Tasted at the La Jolla Food and Wine Society Holiday Dinner. Allowed to breathe in bottle 2 hours; not decanted. Clear medium ruby-garnet-blood red with brick rim. Initial bouquet showed more than a little bretty barnyard. This gradually blew off to reveal lovely notes of ripe red plums, pomegranate, cranberries, and musk. After an hour, the barnyard was completely gone, and the bouquet filled in with more red fruit and beautiful suggestions of menthol, lavender, and stony red soil. On the palate this was seamless, balanced, elegant, with rich satin mouthfeel and lingering finish.

2016 Wine & Food Society of La Jolla Holiday Gala (The Lodge at Torrey Pines, La Jolla, CA): From a well-cellared bottle which was opened 2-3 hours in advance, this wine was tasted over the ensuing hour as part of a multi-course, multi-wine meal. Medium ruby with some bricking at the edge, it offers aromas and flavors of dried cherries, plums, baking spices, black tea and loamy earth. An initial component of brett completely dissipates. Medium-bodied, freshly acidic, seamlessly alcoholic and with light residual tannins, it retains good mid-palate density and closes with impressive length. Those holding comparably cellared bottles should find it enjoyable for another 5-7 years. Drink now-2023.

Quite a mature color with a fair amount of browning. Gorgeous nose of macerated cherries with hints of charred oak, haunted forest and medicinal perfume. Needed an hour in a decanter and then began to show this stunning older medicinal cherry fruit with an incense-like spiciness. The texture is ethereal and quite fine and plush. Lighter-bodied but still with good intensity on the finish which is soooo complex with notes of dark spices and a great finely-etched mineral crunch. The finish on this wine is otherworldly. I actually think this wine was slightly better a couple of years ago (and my bottles have been stored perfectly since release) so if you have any, I would say drink up!

Limpid intense ruby red, no bricking at rim. Good bottle and seal. So fine and deep - mind boggling prescence. So fine it is like walking into a dust cloud of dried red cherries and currants wafting in the air. Tea leaves, hints of dark chocolate shavings, five spice & soy. Surreal balance and still almost live electric acidity after 26 years. So very serious and powerful. Amazing essence of Pinot noir as a grape varietal - Bravo.

This is a sleek, beautiful wine. A thoroughbred in full stride- taught & muscular, sculpted through time. Beautifully mature nose representative of the terroir. Fully mature body, I have had this wine on multiple occasions and although it's not quite on the same level as the Vosne Grand Crus its a fantastic wine that at 25 years old is a superb representation of Grands Echezeaux.
Drink up because I am starting to see slight bottle variation and this wine is at its peak. Excellent & ready...

Dinner with Mrs L, HY and Jeremy (The Fat Cow, Singapore): Handing me a glass of this, all Jeremy would say was 1990 burgundy. Medium ruby in color, it had an intoxicating bouquet that was all about red fruit -- ripe raspberry, dried cranberry -- with subtle mineral notes in the background. On the palate, there was a rich and laden core but it was tight and unyielding at first, like a coiled velvet spring. In the course of the next 30-40 minutes the polished, elegant layers gradually unfolded. The finish was so fine-grained and exquisite it was like a faint shot of raspberry dust up the nose. In retrospect there were a few giveaway DRC traits, as I think nobody does "fine" in quite the same way this estate does it. As this wine matures over the next 10 years, perhaps 1-2 more points on the enjoyment scale? Already very enjoyable though. (And no I couldn't guess it...)

The most powerful wine of the bracket, crammed with delicious red and black fruits and possessing a kind of supercharged sweetness in the mouth. It breathed to show some delightful aromas of fresh roses and had smokiness from the stems. Despite its size it is brilliantly proportioned and seems to be just entering a great drinking phase that could last for many decades.

Needed a good hour in a decanter to come around. Then the purity of this wine began to show itself. Smooth as silk and medium-bodied on the entry but then the wine takes on an extra dimension with this amazing long medicinal dark cherry fruit that kicks in on the finish along with a wonderful mineral complexity. Really in it's plateau of maturity and the regal fineness of this wine is hard to describe. A brilliant Burgundy!

Grand Cru Burgundy Blow-out at Troquet (Troquet, Boston): Very young. Leather, herbs and mint on the slightly restrained nose. Delicious flavors that never stopped. Bracing and mouth-coating. Dinner at Aquerella with the gang. Lovely wine, loads of fruit, very well balanced, and enough acidity left here to last a long time. This wine got better as the night wore on, but to decant would be a mistake I think because of the lovely changes that occured while it evolved in the glass.

This was well placed second to last next to the Dujac. The two wines side by side were ever so close in quality with the Dujac taking it by a nose with more nuance and layer. This too had a youthfulness much like the Dujac with darker fruit and great concentration. The acidity keeps the overall wine in good balance and it tastes like it has some time to go before really starts strutting it's stuff.

Wine tasting. Dark berry fruit on nose and palate with a cornucopia of spices and dried herbs. Palate starts with elegant and pretty fruit, then seems to intensify its concentration on finish. Fruit is clearly ripe but nowhere near jammy. All around amazing balance. Just entering its drinking window, this should continue to be amazing for 20 years.

Sensational aromas of ripe blackberry and black cherry, baking spice and lots of floral notes. Same powerful, ripe black fruit on palate with so much great structural support. Long and elegant spice-driven finish.

Grand Cru Burgundy Blow-out at Troquet (Troquet, Boston): Very young. Leather, herbs and mint on the slightly restrained nose. Delicious flavors that never stopped. Bracing and mouth-coating. This never changed over the course of the evening. Very good wine that was the group's #3 wine of the evening just after the two richebourgs. Could definitely wait some more time for this one.

Clear red with a tinge of brown. Fresh red fruit aromas with flavors of artichoke, red fruits. Still a bit tannic with a long finish.

Light Lumber in the High Country - Part 2: A very good bottle, but somewhat reserved, which given the competition made it the outlier. Perfect shape, and as a result this is still a baby that needs time.

Wow! Paired with the Aldo Conterno Vigna Cicala Barolo...Nose beautiful with 'signature' asian spice of DRC. Complex, layered, beautifully balanced. Long on the palate...Drinking fantastic at this time.

Youthful, layered and complex, this was my favorite of the '90 Ech/GE/RSV flight. It's a wine that needs more time, though.

A 1990 DRC trio of Eche, Grands Eche, and RSV. I liked the GE best, followed by the RSV. The team was split about 50/50 between GE and RSV as WOTF. Fun flight.

This is still a baby. Do not open another bottle for five years. Good juice, but will likely flesh out so much more.
