Roses, cherries, and floral aromatics. The palate wasn’t very interesting, indeed didn’t show the typical charm from DRCs. I doubt about the authenticity of this bottle.

Tasted blind, this wine had a medium red center with light red/orange rims. The medium+ intensity nose of roses, cherries, rhubarb, and tan spices was immediately attractive.
On first pour, the mouth was not. It was disjointed with rough tannin and odd acidity. This wine scored around 90 pts when first poured. However, after a couple hours of air this wine made a major turn-around to show much more fruit, rounded tannin, and more linear acidity.
There was no mistaking this for a 1990 but it was attractive and started living up to the promise of the nose after a few hours in a decanter. This appears to be just coming into its zone so it should drink well for 10-15 years.

Appearance: Bright and clear, the wine is of light garnet colour, with wide fading rim and legs. Nose: Clean, with medium (+) intensity aromas of red fruit of cherries and dried strawberry, floral notes of rose, herbal notes of black tea, sweet spice of nutmeg, mineral notes of earth, maturity notes of truffle. The wine is fully developed. Palate: Dry with medium (+) acidity, medium (+) tannin of ripe and silky texture, medium alcohol and medium (-) body, with medium (+) intensity flavours of red fruit of raspberry, strawberry and cherries, floral notes of rose, sweet spice of nutmeg, maturity notes of forest floor. The wine has long finish. Conclusion: Excellent quality Grands Echezeaux with an intense nose showing great complexity, with the red fruit of cherries and a bit of sweetness aromas of dried strawberry, followed by rose petals, and then a range of herbal and sweet spice notes, on the background of earthy and development characters. On the palate the wine is ethereal, with good acidity and the tannin fully integrated, the flavours are concentrated and the length is truly amazing. It is ready to drink now and can maintain for another 3-5 years.

Glorious, stunning rose petal aroma leaps from the glass - utterly mesmerizing. Good fruit and structure, but the palate wasn't quite up the aromas, it was a bit foursquare by comparison. Overall, an excellent showing because the aromas were so astounding the palate didn't need to deliver much to make it a thrilling experience.

Brick red. Quite subtle, spicy, earth, some tomato and beef bouillon. Quite rustic on the palate with grainy tannins, black tea. Quite stimulating but not a blockbuster from DRC.

Another lost Friday afternoon gathering – 88 DRCs, 90 Bordeauxs, Raveneaus, Dauvissats and etc. (Black Salt, Washington DC): Perfect mature complex nose displaying slightly dry red fruit, raspberry jam, dry cherry, cherry pie, dehydrated strawberry, perfect amount of sous bois, soy, light caramel, grilled cep, Vosne spice and earth. Fully integrated palate, very finely layered subtle sweet red fruit, silky and polished, bright acidity, good earthy mineral, still showing slightly dry tannins and a seamless long subtle sweet red fruit driven finish with sous bois at the end. The nose is too die for. However, the palate reflects the masculine vintage character with a hint of rustic tannins and the bright acidity. Everyone prefers to the Richebourg.

From 6L this was right in the zone. The nose has a perfume of rose petals and there's some stalky plant matter. There are soy and hoisin notes that I see in aged La Tache and the wine is generous and full in the mouth. It really builds through the palate and is crisp and fine on the finish.

Burgundy Dinner with Friends (RPM Steak - Chicago IL): I haven't had this wine in at least 5+ years, but it continues to outperform its place in the DRC hierarchy in the 1988 vintage. Bottle was open ~2 hours before serving, Highlight was the huge Vosne-styled, sweet brown spice aromas and flavors. Red cherry and berry were charming and age appropriate for its age, with tannins very well integrated for a 1988.

SS's birthday celebration at Garibaldi. Medium red, no hint of browning until the very end of the evening. The aromatics on this wine was crazy. There was a melange of such complex flavours and notes on the nose with arabian spices, crushed blueberries, strawberry cream, sweet cherries and red roses. For the nose alone, this would get 100 points from me. While this heightened expecations for the palate, somehow it would have been unrealistic to expect a mirror effect. True enough, while the palate had really good structure, silky and velvety tannins, it lacked the extra oomph. There was bright fruit like cherries, plums, strawberries, violets and spice. In terms of the nose, this was way above the Vega 1962 and the Montrose 1990, but in terms of the palate, this was ranked third. The length was brilliant though, you could feel the wine for at least a couple of minutes, it just lacked that bit of complexity to make it stand out. Right at the end (after 3 hours), the wine faded, just like how the DRC Richebourg 1988 did. I'm absolutely convinced 1988 was a brilliant DRC vintage, but it does not have the lasting power to see its 30th birthday in the best shape. Drink from now, and over the next 3 years or so. This is my wine of the year in 2014.

Finally popped my DRC cherry. Thank you J! I had been talking to my friend J about burgundy and how I generally don't get it. Sometime during the conversation we talked about how a few years ago he poured me some blind Petrus to try to prove that there is some good merlot out there. I unceremoniously dumped it out after a sip in favor of a glass of Pott. (I did not know what it was when I dumped it out, I would have at least poured it in someone else's glass had I known ;) We talked about my never having tasted a DRC and joked about how I would probably dump it out too. We gathered the next day for a dinner at a nice steak house in Toronto, in preparation for the Grapes Under Pressure event and to celebrate seeing each other as a few of us wino/Rush fans were gathering again. I brought a Dangerous Birds and a 1975 Suduiraut. The wines were casually declared so we knew there would be a Raven as well and J had said he wanted to bring a Lafite of some sort. There was also a Harlan, a Marcassin and a Cayuse. No slouches but no delicate wines either. J decided that he needed to get me to hate something else so he brought this DRC.
Damnit. I loved the wine. Way to ruin my life and credit card. We obviously had this first with a very short decant. The nose had a little barnyard but this is the first time I can say that barnyard actually felt like an integral and enhancing quality in a wine. It sort of interwove with the warm cherry aromas and the mouthwatering baking spices on the nose. I smelled and smelled and smelled some more. I thought I would be let down by the palate because how could I like a Burgundy this much, especially while sober. F**k, I loved that too. Just seamless and playful. Lots of hints of things like tart cherries, orange peel notes, even cinnamon playing hide and seek at first sip but followed by a wave of more earthy, autumn leaves notions. From there it was almost mushroomy. Then back to clean and sensuous. It struck me that I had to pay attention to this wine or I would miss half of it. The SQNs were awesome but I could have been talking about whiskey and Rush and still enjoyed those because they blast through whatever you put in front of them. The DRC demands your attention less you miss all its nuances. This was quite the experience for me. Again, thanks J.

This wine was poured at a local restaurant after decanting for 45 minutes. The wine was very slightly cloudy and a light ruby (with some brown and orange tinges) in colour. With a nose and taste of red cherries and some caramel this wine was wonderful tonight. I loved that the alcohol levels were lower that most wines these days and the acidity and tannins were at minimal levels. What a treat it was to have a bottle of this and I wish that I had more.

This bottle was opened at a local restaurant to celebrate a friend's birthday. It was decanted for approximately 30 minutes. The wine was slightly cloudy and light red (with an orange tinge) in colour. There was a light barnyard nose to it with a very slight hint of mustiness that went away after approximately 30 minutes in the glass. In tasting, I found a slightly thin wine that shows it's age. Flavours of red cherries and some maple as well. Light on the tannins and very light on the acidity. Overall, this was a good wine but I think it's time to drink them now or soon if you have them.

Soft red color with brown peaking through around the edges. Light bodied. Nose of forest floor, with slight hint of berries. Nose was delicate, as it faded within an hour. Excellent on the palette up front and through to a reasonable finish. Deceiving wine, as the nose faded I was concerned, but in the mouth it seemed to have many years to go...

Tasted blind, this wine had a light red center with yellow/orange rims. It looked a bit older than I might have expected. The high- intensity nose of black cherry, anise, and sous bois, also developed a hint of rose.
In the mouth, this wine moved though a couple of stages despite being open for several hours prior to the tasting. It was medium bodied with a crisp, linear profile at first. Afterward it became more tannic and firm, Finally, it rounded out a bit and became more balanced.
This wine is hard to read. The color suggests it is at its peak. However, the evolution in the glass suggests it will not only last, but may improve in the bottle. In any event, give it a TON of air before drinking. This is not a bottle to "pop & pour".

I suppose this wine is quite impressive given the age, as a naked Burgundian Pinot without a label and a vintage... Good, but not outstanding. The nose was dominated by lactic character, a right ripe camembert. wWith a lot of coaxing a searching this cheesiness subsided somewhat and let past some very subtle raspberry and earth notes. On the palate tart red current was the main focus, still very bright, and I could see this wine holding like this for more time, but I suspect a lot of what was there earlier had already dropped out of it. There was a mineral and earth component in the mouth, but I found it overall to be a little monodimensional... hanging on to the last few notes of what may have been very good song.

Stewy nose but more aromatic than the 1988 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Echezeaux. This is short and out of balance, it provides a big presence but not much interest. Perhaps a bottle issue? Not sure but my score would only go down...

Trio of DRC GE: 88,90,91. The 91 was the class of this trio. Rich, vibrant, flat out great. The 90 had a little heat, and showed fine if not great. The 88 was intriguing, and the fruit had to be coaxed out, but it was a nice wine.

I always love the nose on this wine. Pure pinot fruit with very earthy tones in the mix. This bottle was not quite up to some of the other bottles that I've had but still a excellent bottle. Drank along side the 90 and 91 and it was as good on the nose but a little behind on the pallet.

This was a fascinating wine. It still has fruit but it did not last long. The wine fell apart after being opened for about 90 minutes. There is a metallic taste that wasn't unpleasant with cranberry fruit and a light floral nose. I cant imagine that this wine is getting better with age at this point.

Not sure about this. Strong mushroomy nose with a bit of red fruit. Better in the mouth, with a long bitter cherry finish. Over time the mushroom nose did not blow off, the bitter cherry became more sour cherry and then more tomato. Good length but a bit disjointed. Interesting rather than pleasant to drink.

Tasting Group Dinner - DRC Thank-You For Brad England (La Belle Vie, Minneapolis): Consistent with the bottle I tasted last November; perhaps a touch better. Slightly funky/cheesy initial nose that quickly blew off. Gorgeoux, complex layers of tea, black truffles, black cherries, mushrooms, and leather. Very minerally and well balanced, with a long, intense finish. The tannins are mature but not resolved. Delicious.

Kitchen Tasting Group Tribute to Brad England (La Belle Vie): Another awesome nose feature dark fruit, earth, tea, cinammon, and mushroom. Intense, but less about the fruit and more about funky complex/nuanced aromas. Very, very intriquing. On the palate this is shockingly youthful. Ripe red fruit. Vibrant from the acidity and tannins still present after all these years. This is the second time I have had this and this was a great showing.

When in Romanée... (Eleven Madison Park): Intensely mineral, like metal shavings had been stirred into the glass. This shows the rigid structure of 1988 with chain-mail tannins overcoming some of the elegance of the red-black fruit, which becomes rockier and rockier as it sits.

A few Sunday burgs at Jeffs house.: Somehow, an 88 DRC Grands Eche was sitting out on the kitchen counter (I love it when that happens - thanks Chris). My initial burg experiences in the 90's centered around 1988, so this was a treat. I'm writing this from memory the next day with no notes, and my recollection is "straight down the middle". Great wine, no surprised, as expected. We may need to try this again for some more precise notes! Ha.

Minneapolis Does Burgundy and N. Rhone (DRC, Leroy, Mugnier, Dujac, Chave, Chapelle, Chapoutier, Clape): One of Jeff's contributions, and WOW did this show well. A person could spend an entire night just smelling this wine it was so compelling. I would say sweet red fruit, earth, and spice intermixed perfectly to produce a singular sensation with great intensity. While that taste was also spectacular, it couldn't deliver what the nose promised. Deep black fruit and spice coat the palate. Great balance. If anything maybe slightly tangy on the finish. Really spectacular! I'm sorry I let out my secret source where two bottles are available at below market prices. I'm sure they're both gone by now.

A Grand Evening...with Grands-Echezeaux (Kevin Restaurant, Chicago IL): Musty when first opened and decanted, then left to stand a couple of hours. Spicy red fruit on the nose. Similar red cherry flavors on the palate but behind massive tannic structure and acidity. Finish seemed to show a bit more black fruit and again lots of Asian spice. Incredible length. Great potential, I'd hold to something like 2015-2038. Far more interesting than the 1995 tasted alongside.

Deceiving wine, as the nose faded I was concerned, but in the mouth it seemed to have many years to go...

wonderful and immediately open nose. forest floor, darker berries. That was the best part of the wine. Think it is drying out just bit, slim towards the end.

91 and 88 side by side. Both were terrific. Out of the gates, the 91 was preferred, but with an hour of decanter time the 88 caught up. Quite the pair.

Big nose with lots of sous bois. Powerful wine, with big structure. It seemed to get a little out of balance after an hour in the glass. The tannin overpowered the fruit. Lots of acid on the backend. 91 pts.
