3rd bottle from a 6 pack, last tasted 3 yrs ago. As this bottle warmed up, the nutty and oily notes turned into a refreshingly apricot and tangerine profile, with minerality and acid for daysssss. This wine was crazy. Polarizing at the tasting today, but I loved it. Drink through 2030+.

Wonderful depth and nuance on the nose - a little smoke, some candied fruits and some waxy, oxidative background notes. The palate is surprisingly fresh and discreet showing subtle notes of almond, honey and balancing citrus. A lovely bottle in great condition and an absolute treat with roast chicken, vin jaune and morels at Noble Rot. No need to wait any longer for these.

Kandisert mango, sopp, kandisert sitrus, hint av rosiner, hvite blomster. Litt kaotisk nese. Flott vin!

Vanilla, citrus and oxidized apples. Also some TCA, which probably has affected the fruitiness. High acidity. Fully mature, but will last for many years.

This was not as beguiling as the Grand Reserva but was still a phenomenal wine. Searing acidity but with a waxy mouthfeel that makes the acidity just want you to eat. Typical slightly oxidative flavors with citrus and umami flavors.

2nd of 6 bottles, last tasted 4.5 years ago. More akin to a paint product than wine, this is interesting, albeit odd. Acetate, glue, macadamia dust, pledge lemon furniture polish, and wet gravel. I am not sure what to think, but it raises my brow with interest. High acidity, bright and glue-like on the palate (after 4 days open in the fridge with no cork). Drink now through 2025+.

Wow, really good. Smells of sherry, almonds, fresh ground ginger and unsweetened caramel. Attack seems sweet like caramel at first, yet this is actually quite dry with grapefruit and linseed. Good layered mouthfeel, long lingering acetic finish. In that oxidative style but still fresh and has enough fruit for balance. Not something for everyday, but special.

At OXY Dumplings in Chinatown. Right out the gate, palate is pretty out of sight. Hazelnut and cream soda, well-balanced without a trace out of place. Continues to evolve all over the place over the course of the meal. Gets much more saline and draws out some fishiness towards the end of the bottle Excellent. Even these Reserva’s have loads of legs to them.

Mid gold. Touch of sherry on the nose but really fine to drink. Nutty, citrus, baked apple, honey. So complex and complete. Good acidity too. Very good with some tapas. Great length, lovely wine. Loads in the tank.

Perfect. Utterly perfect. Fresh lemon, baked golden apple, and walnuts. Still tons of life left, and kept opening up even after three hours, so don't rush to drink yours.

This was excellent for the first half hour or so after opening. Focused on the palate with furniture polish, nuts and candied lemons. Like some-one had taken a blowtorch to the younger version of the wine and burned off all the fat leaving a linear, precise experience. Reminded me of the 1991 Gran Reserva I had a couple years ago though with less intensity. After half an hour though it began to fall apart, becoming bitter, and oaky and hot. Too bad.

I understand that this is not a wine for everyone, but tonight it was incredible. An orange-gold color (color from age, not an orange wine as nzinkgraf points out). Definitely needs food, but with scallops in a chili, ginger and tangerine sauce and Dungeness crab ravioli with carrot-apple nage it was firing on all cylinders. Plenty of acid, nose and flavors of orange peels and fruit, nuttiness, ripe green apples, just so much going on here. Yes, oxidative, but in a really interesting and food friendly way. Last bottle and wish I had more.
For Christmas Eve served with Provençal Fish Stew with Sriracha Rouille (similar to bouillabaisse), an Ina Garten recipe. The acidity, flavor complexity, and body stood up perfectly to the rich stew. Being an atypical white, it was unexpected, and we would absolutely do it again!

Drinking well but showed why these wines need time - for me in a bit of a halfway house between phases. Still showing good freshness and fruit, but also some white almond evolution. Leave for another 5+ years ideally ****

Darker and more mature than a 94 Gran Reserva tasted same evening. Ripe yellow fruits with honey and nuts. Fruity and concentrated in the mouth, with a slight bitterness in the finish.

Ah, this is coming along nicely! The saline and marmalade nose now has some caramel with the vanilla and dried apricot. Still fresh in the mouth, but much greater breadth of flavour and mouthfeel than a few years ago. Apple and lime still dominate but now much riper, and a touch of honey now appearing with air. With more time I expect the nose to show praline. I still rate this much more than other CT users (and it added another point with more air) and think this will continue to improve to 2020. Peak should be 2020-2025. 93pts

Heirloom and Tilia Collaboration Dinner (Heirloom, St.Paul, MN): Light-medium gold color. PNP, drank 1 glass over 40 minutes. Another very fine bottle of Lopez, quite consistent with the last bottle 6 months ago. Very complex and showing lemon, lemon oil, honey, dried apricot, white blossoms, spice and nuts. Very good. not oxidative at all.

Traditional Rioja (RSJ, London): Significantly more advanced in colour than the 01, this is full gold. Full and round but it hasn't stayed as fresh as it might have done. Jolly tasty but stands out a little in the company. Must check the colour of my bottles. Decent but a little underwhelming considering previous bottles of this. ***

Rouget Echezeaux Dinner (Christopher's - Phoenix AZ): Small glass, brief note. Honeycomb with dried apricot and apple, followed by some candied lemon peel hints. Moderate weight and length. At an "in between" state where the oxidative notes seem pronounced vs supportive, I really enjoyed tasting this now, but expect it will reward another decade in the cellar.

Spanish at Costa Blanca (Costa Blanca, Mpls, MN): Medium gold color. PNP, drank 1 glass over a n hour. Drank this side by side with the '98. Both were outstanding wines and were not showing the sometimes quite overt oxidative character that can mask or tone down the freshness of these wines. The '96 showed a touch more age, but still remained remarkably fresh and vibrant. Floral, citrus, lemon, spiced, peach, honey. The palate is vibrant, nice energy and depth of the mixed bright citrus flavors with hints of nuts, honey and spice. I favored the '98 by just a hair for its freshness and just a bit more complexity.

This wine was new to me and an interesting surprise. Slightly dark color suggests some oxidation and is matched by a slightly sherried flavor. But floral notes, minerality, and acidity make this a very pleasant starter accompaniment. Better with food. Very interesting!

My last note/score was spot on. This drinks well with only 5mins of air in the glass (no need to decant) and is still improving. Peak from 2020 and it should last to 2030. Perfect to coravin at home to have a class with a rich pasta starter (carbonara again tonight).

Somehow I've not written a note on this wine. 12bts down and 12 to go. Saline and marmalade nose, bit of dried apricot and vanilla in background. Nice and acidic with a broad mouthfeel and long finish of sour fruit (think very sour apple and lime). Lovely golden colour. This will last another 10yrs easily. It's a real food wine - needs cream/dairy and rich food to match the body. I enjoy it most with a rich carbonara, though it works ok with cheese and Mediterranean food generally (eg with lots of olive oil).

Initially popped Friday night - did not pay much attention; revisited the rest Tuesday night and it was almost exactly the same! Dark yellow, Slighly oily, lemon-orange, unripe pear, a bit of apricot, and the caramel of oxidation. Uplifting acidity and somewhat sherry like. Unique, I enjoyed it, but not for everyone.

MuscaDay 2015: Such a cool, crazy, insane wine. Salty, musky, earthy, full of tea and nuts. The candied orange peel and lemon curd fruit is blasted with nuts, dried honey, all sorts of herbs. An awesome wine, and even better when paired with a black and white pepper-crusted goat cheese. Such intriguing, challenging, but ultimately rewarding stuff.

This wine defies logic. Initially had a maderized nose, this blew off and was replaced by caramel, chalk, macadamia nuts, and literally no fruit I could ascertain. The structure of this wine was so amazing, with crazy complexity and an acid spine that is unbelievable. This wine will age forever. A memorable experience. Need to try this with foie gras encrusted with macadamia nuts.

An acquired taste. If you like Fino Sherry, you will like this. I don't like Fino Sherry due to the lack of acidity, but this wine fixed that issue. Gold color of medium intensity. Medium nose with loads of salt water, hazelnuts, almonds and lemon curd. Similar profile on the palate with medium I tensity and a lingering finish. Hint: don't drink this too cold as that will mask the wine's complexity. Goes well with chocolate ice cream!

In an absolute sweet spot. The middle of the palate takes it away - seamless, savory, succulent (lots of "s"s there), creamy character that was utterly delicious. Thoughts were it wouldn't go much farther and while I don't have a ton of experience with these wines I disagree - I think it is right in the pocket and has years ahead. But its definitely on fire now.

This is what neutral barrel-aged white should taste like. Definitely showing some nuttiness and a crystalline honey, but in the beautiful madeira way, no intrusive oak/vanilla. Great acidity and salinity especially on the long round finish. One would have to like this style and have with paella optimally.

A unique wine that will be appreciated only by some, but those that do will find it extraordinary. This is a bone dry wine with an exquisite nose of floral scents, vanilla and honey. On the palate it is very dry to start with substantial acidity, followed by layers of unusual flavors of shadowy fruit, vanilla, and more. the cent of the tongue is coated with fruit while tha acidity reaches the sides. The finish is very very long with complexities that end with just a hint of fruit. A unique wine. Do not over chill. Tastes better on the warmer side.

That's it! Fantastic drink at La Piperna in Madrid. What a Tondonia, red or white, must be...a generous bottle, superb performance and good balance. Old gold colour. Still young anyay. Nose is full of wax and caramel aromas. Delicious. Dense, balsamic on the palate. A fresh acidity helps to get on fit your food.
Color a oro viejo.

Brought to dinner, finished later at home. Deep color but not yet gold. Aromatic nose that is very different from most whites we see: olive, brine, honey and saline. Taste is varied as well with toasted nuts, nectarine, honey, butterscotch and salt. Crazy complex, nice vibrancy and acid. Very cool bottle of wine.
Spanish Whites and Reds Offline (Rincon 38, Mpls, MN): Deep gold color. PNP, drank 1glass over 1.5hrs. Medium gold-amber color. Musty, funky nose reminiscent of aged white Burgundy. Lemon and honey aromas, accented with mint and pine. On the palate this is surprisingly bright and vivacious, incorporating ferrous, saline and stone notes underpinned by a tart acidity. This can last for many more years. Excellent wine.

Esperaremos!!!!

Blind tasting at Halvor's - ham and cheese combinations (Risløkka, Oslo): Developed dark yellow. Complex, slightly oxidized nose with apricot, marzipan/nuts and some mould. Full-bodied, very dry and intense on the palate. Fresh citrus acidity. Very long. To me this is a great wine, like an exotic mix of Burgundy and Jura.
Yellow colour with an oxidized character, almost sherry-like, no fruit, high acid. Has definitely passed its peak. Sorry I didn't have it a couple of years earlier.
One of the best bottles of white I have enjoyed, ever. Beautifully complex and loooong on the palate. Bought to pair with seafood paella and it was certainly a match worth remembering; i can't think of anything else that would have been better. The slight oxidation does give a subtle sherry note, but there is so much more in here, ranging from popcorn to lemon zest. Only regret is not having more!
Round and almost tropical fruit on the nose with slight acetone touch. Sweet and more savoury nuances intermingling nicely. Mushrooms, vanilla, smoke, butterscotch, shellfish and white flowers. Dry and fullbodied powerful palate with balanced acidity, salty touch and leathery grip. Concentrated dried fruits, maccadamia, hazelnuts, pine and mushrooms. Vanilla and florals. Long aftertaste. Amazing powerhouse without sacrificing complexity. Wonderful balance.

Classic Tondonia Blanco nose of smoky candied fruits and that slightly oxidised, sherried note. Focused and pure with delicate sweet fruit. Gains weight and depth on the mid palate with a powerful nutty sour lemon flavour. Huge length on the finish, first candied fruit then creamy caramel. Lovely.
A great wine, but with bottle variations. This bottel showed intense and complex aromas of citrus and wood. On the palate it is high in acidity. A rather special wine for experienced wine lovers. I rated one bottle rather low (90), because it showed much less intensity and complexity. But two other bottles were a really great tasting experience.
On the tounge it's very light, but it coats the mouth like a smooth cloak. Very nice balance between the acid and the sweetness. Notes of citrus, butter and nuts. Very long finish. Evolves in the glass over several hours, suggesting it perhaps would benefit from a few more years.

Young Lopez de Heredia Whites and Reds (Arlequin Wine Merchant, San Francisco): Medium yellow. Leesy nose. Broad, chalky, and creamy. Dry, vanillin flavors and searing acidity. Color: Bright gold. Nose: Intense melange of honey, pears, melon and gentle spice. Palate: Rich and dense with lovely balanced citrus acidity. Orchard fruits with notes of minerals and oranges. Great persistence on the palate. Still wonderful the following day from an uncorked bottle. Wow.

This is special.....not much experience with this type of white. Initially you would think that it's oxydized or vey sheery like....but then you realize this is probably what the producer was shooting for....this is the "style" of this wine. Need to give this a chance.

This wine proved challenging for most of the participants. The high acidity and mild sherry like background tastes turned most everyone off. I think its probably an acquired taste kind of thing?
This wine has a cult like following and a sky high image/reputation with much older bottlings currently on offering in the market place. Guess its not just my thing but I am not going to change my rating to reflect popular fashions.

Racion: This was rich, somewhat closed in the beginning, and brooding. Just a touch more oxydated nose than the 1989 with tons of metalic minerality; powerful, viscous, with a huge finish. They say this is old style and I tried it expecting it to be oxidised and sherry-like. There is a hint of oxidation, but it adds to the overwhelming impression of clean pineapple fruit, bright clear acidity and a wine with laser-like precision. Very good and great value

Josh Kurek's birthday bash (Corkbuzz, New York, NY): Off the list at Corkbuzz. Bought by Al, who ordered it early by phone and then showed up so late he missed it. Thanks Al! pretty nose. Oxidized, nutty, flowers, smoky and perfumed - almost like Viognier, but more savory. Some sweet honeysuckle. Light on entry, very nutty, minerals. Lovely and mature, but really solid. A touch of oak. Salty. This is just rocking. A great finish of nuts, lemon, acid, and saline. I put a few clues together to guess Lopez and Tondonia: I saw a bottle of Lopez being opened at the bar, and when someone else was guessing, I heard someone from Corkbuzz, Laura maybe saying that it was an oxidized style. Really great - one of my WOTNs. Nose - 5/6, Palate - 5/6, Finish - 5.5/6, Je Ne Sais Quoi - 1.5/2 = 17/20.

A Long Weekend of Burgs and a Few Others; 5/17/2012-5/20/2012 (Scottsdale, AZ): Brought by one of the guests, a very pleasant surprise. Pretty tight and taught now, with the typical oxidative edge showing but not much else. There's clearly something else there, as the wine has some waxy weight and good length.

Peak should be 2020-2025. 93pts

Per Mćlings; 3/24/2013-3/26/2013 (Bjarne sin kåk, Frogner): Deep golden color.
Smells of oak, vanilla and rich, ripe fruit
On the tounge it's very light, but it coats the mouth like a smooth cloak. Very nice balance between the acid and the sweetness. Notes of citrus, butter and nuts. Very long finish. Evolves in the glass over several hours, suggesting it perhaps would benefit from a few more years.

Young Lopez de Heredia Whites and Reds (Arlequin Wine Merchant, San Francisco): Medium yellow. Leesy nose. Broad, chalky, and creamy. Dry, vanillin flavors and searing acidity. The only one of the whites with a touch of sherry oxidation. Very earthy finish. Overall, strangely evocative of Savennieres in its earthy, idiosyncratic nature.

Mid to full straw. Gently oxidative nose. Lacks the verve and complexity of 91/92. Decent enough but comes across as relatively simple at this stage. Good texture with a touch of wax and lanolin, smooth and rounded. Reasonable acidity and a positive finish. ***

Tasted at the Viva Espana Tasting.
This wine proved challenging for most of the participants. The high acidity and mild sherry like background tastes turned most everyone off. I think its probably an acquired taste kind of thing?
This wine has a cult like following and a sky high image/reputation with much older bottlings currently on offering in the market place. Guess its not just my thing but I am not going to change my rating to reflect popular fashions.

a wine like no other I've ever tasted. Golden color, bone dry and layered with flavors of green apples and dried fruit, acidity and minerality follows with a long long layered finish that cleanses the palate and makes ready for more. A delight with fish en pappillote.

Racion: This was rich, somewhat closed in the beginning, and brooding. Just a touch more oxydated nose than the 1989 with tons of metalic minerality; powerful, viscous, with a huge finish. Reminded me of a closed white Rhone. This may have to wait another 10 years, in which case I would bet this will be amazing. 92-94 (in 10 years).

They say this is old style and I tried it expecting it to be oxidised and sherry-like. There is a hint of oxidation, but it adds to the overwhelming impression of clean pineapple fruit, bright clear acidity and a wine with laser-like precision. Very good and great value

Interesting wine. Golden yellow color. At first rather severe, oxidized, sherry-like, overoaked vanilla nose. Over the next two hours, things integrated into a beautifuly balanced wine with a unique personality. Citrus, melon, ananas, spies, nuts, caramel, mineral notes in the nose. Fresh, and vigorous on the nose. Good acidity and very long finish. Very good QPR for this E18 bottle bought at the Lopez Heredia winery.

Wow. This caught me off guard. What an amazing nose. Hints of honey and boiled sweets, citrus fruit. Where's the oxidative tondonia?? Beguiling nose, not what I was expecting. On the palate it's wonderful with the usual lanolin and waxy mouthfeel supported by some, dare I say it, fruit. Really good. (94+)

Fully flavoured and waxy with great depth on the mid palate, a really nice dried lemon rind and salty celery note and a long mouthfilling nutty caramel finish. I love these wines.
