  • Domaine de la Romanee conti 2018 Tasting and Dinner; 4/29/2021-4/30/2021 (Le Bernardin): In a way, I don't know how to rate this wine. For me, RC is usually subtle and contemplative. Our host, when discussing the food pairing, confessed his struggles ever pairing this wine appropriately and I think there is something to that. So, unlike all the other wines I tasted along side this one, I am not doing a relative comparison.

This wine is beautiful and long. It carries a lot with ease and leaves you beguiled. I know 96 is a worrisome vintage, but I think this wine is wonderfully expressive and inviting. It does not have any of the reticent character often associated with 96.

  • Sous bois, touch of savoriness aromatically. Rich, deep palate but perhaps not the purest. (1915/6101)

  • 1996 DRC Romanee Conti- Crazy aromatics that only gets deeper and wilder with coffee beans, perfume, smoke, red currant, ginger flowers and potpourri. Palate is silky and elegant with sweet red fruit. The magic of RC is the intensity curve that develops in the glass. A wine that keeps going on the upswing where the ultimate peak lies upon your wild imagination.

  • Some inconsistency compared to prior bottle. Lacked similarly extreme energy on nose and delineation on the palate. From same ex-domaine case. (5435/6101)

  • Insane bottle that blew 2005 Tache away. Delicate, lively, sweet floral aromatics, incredibly intoxicating. Utterly harmonious palate. (5430/6101)

  • Multi facetted nose with bits of roses, hoisin, and pure floral Pinot. That's currently the strongest point. The wine is still somewhat tight now - so believe this needs a lot more time. But a real treat even now.

  • A very pretty, delineated nose of red cherry base with suggestions of hard candy, trapist ale-like, confectionary aromas of mint, woodland aromas, clove, cinnamon, floral tones and strong incense, spices that all come to the forefront very quickly and are sharply delineated but are changing so rapidly, that you cannot pick out one dominating aroma. The aromatics are so diverse yet so vivid but one never feels overwhelmed (but almost laugh as if its some silly mind game) but gracious by very warm, inviting organic based aromas coupled with a gorgeous purity of fruit. It is as if all the flavors are moving on fast-forward speed moving in and out of transition so quickly. The aromas changed with every whiff but remained well focused and relatively open-knit. The palate is juicy with well defined freshness on top of deep red cherry and black cherry flavors of medium (-) to medium body. The midpalate is silky and round with perfect balance and purity of fruit. Primary on the palate still but lots of potential.

  • Brick red, touch of separation at the rim, looks older than it is. Ah but no fear, nose is highly intriguing, surprisingly open, honeysuckle, tomato, beef (?!), touch of apple and pear. Just when you think you nail down a smell, it changes again, something else comes up. Truly an amazing experience. Not rich or heavy in the mouth but waves and waves of flavour and length. Totally in balance, only a hint of tannins and still a little closed. Aubert thought the 96s need more time and who am I to argue with the co-gerant! A very generous 8 (!) bottles opened at the dinner. Not sure that happens or will happen too many times on the planet!

  • The 1996 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Romanée-Conti opened up all luscious, giving and sweet and then tightened in the glass. There was a thread of liquorice running through the aroma and flavour profile coupled with pomegranate Asian spices, sweet cherry and sandalwood. As the wine breathed the structural elements pushed the fruit back a little.

  • A very complex nose but with a touch of the toilet bowl... weird. Notably dark color. Wow - on the palate there is such concentrated fruit that it is really amazing. It was noted that the 1996 Romanée-Contis are spotty but this bottle has greatness - lovely acidity. Aubert noted a touch of reduction. Fantastic wine, really lovely overall presentation, sappy and long
