Zachy's La Paulee 2022 (Le Bernardin Prive): /16424, next to 01 GE. Quite muted when served and took some time to open. Does not have the clarity I remembered (one of my favorite vintages of Echezeaux chez Domaine), but pretty and understated. Purple fruit and spice. 93

2001 Echezeaux was not ready for prime time. Still a fair amount of oak which surprised me. Strong coffee and char notes on the palate that took awhile to tamper down as it had more oak spice than it did fruit for awhile. The sweetness of the fruit started to come out a hour or so after but it never really showed itself. I think a few hours in the decanter would have been really beneficial.

Beautiful nose, true to character, black and red cherry, more bright red cherry and highly floral stems. The Echezeaux might actually be a little more showy and forward than the GE in the next glass. Started out youthful and fairly strict but developed beautifully. Great acid pairs well with the lush style, although these aren’t overly bombastic. Open now but with youth and power in due proportion. Terrific balance. Really love these. 94 - 95.

Decanted for an hour then drank 2/3s that evening and saved the rest of the following afternoon in the fridge. Wish I would have decanted longer, completely different wine the following day, much more open and expansive on the palate. A beautiful bottle of Echezeaux shared with my wife the first night home with our first born child.

Finally an on fire bottle of 01 Ech. Seductive nose with spice, red currant, coffee beans, perfume and flower. Palate was smoothe, silky and expressive with layers of coffee beans, cinammon, ginger flower and sweet red currant. An amazing DRC Echezeaux. One could argue it lacked the power of some of the better and younger vintage, but it was alluring and light on its feet. Superb.

2001 vs 2002 DRC tasting with a few others; 10/20/2018-10/21/2018 (Marcel's by Robert Wiedmaier, DC and Bryan's house): Beautifully perfumed nose displaying sweet black fruit with a hint of red, blackberry, candied raspberry, a hint of mint/stem and sous bois, rose, truffle, caramel, sweet spices and earth. Beautifully integrated youthful palate, rich and dense especially compare to the GEs and the RSVs, medium acidity, good earthy mineral, a hint of very fine tannins and a long sweet blackberry and raspberry driven finish with stem and earthy mineral at the end. It is drinking beautifully but can improve for another decade as sous bois and tertiary notes have not fully developed.

Notes from memory, more or less everything you hope for here: highly stemmy and floral with distinct Echezeaux stalkiness. Dark black cherry fruit with a real oak polish. Powerful but also pretty. Kind of a modern classic, yeah it’s oaked but there is just so much fruit power and outstandingly showy aromatics. All well balanced and tied together. I like this a lot.

01 DRC Ech was muted on the nose with cinnamon, earth and green tinge. Palate opened up gradually but lacked the DRC kick. With the 01 vintage, I have had underwhelming experience with 01 DRC Ech, Richebourg and La Tache. Only the RSV really showed its class. Given how much the ct community raved about this wine, I want to believe this is an off bottle. 89 point based on this bottle.

Really supple and interestingly complex. Nice red fruit - cherries and raspberries with great depth. Some charcoal and smoke yet the fruit is very bright. Red candy. Great DRC spice and classic DRC texture. Really well integrated. This is on a great plateau where it will likely reside for many years. Really enjoyable right now.

2014 red Burgundy tasting w/ incredible whites served blind (Eddie V's - Tysons Corner, VA): Very youthful expressive nose displaying sweet red cherry, raspberry tart, a hint of Vosne spice, a hint of coffee, grilled steak, sweet spices and earth. The stem note has been fully integrated and perhaps expresses as cinnamon. Nicely integrated palate, excellent concentration, generous ripe red fruit driven, bright acidity, strong earthy mineral, a hint of fine tannins and a long ripe red fruit driven finish. This particular bottle is very youthful and can benefit from another decade of cellaring.

2016 Family Xmas; 12/24/2016-12/25/2016 (Alicante): Very in its place. Specially if you noted this is a 2001. Considering it is just an Echezeaux, you can not ask for more. Spiced to the max on the nose. Elegant bouquet of cherries on a bed of petals of red roses. Also lead pencil. Deep, meaty, slightly chocolaty even, an intoxicating Echezeaux. Texture of silk on the palate. Of good length and grip but all with softness, something almost imperceptible but of great class. It has the right acidity to accompany a lamb trowel. Simply delicious and I can say without any doubt this is much better than some La Tâche I took in its youth. Along with some of Rousseau, one of the best burgundy bottles I ever drunk. Time has rewards. Even, I've to insist with a vintage like this.

Drunk at Otto e Mezzo in Hong Kong from Magnum. This was approachable right from the beginning and continued to perform well throughout the evening. Definitely lighter and more forward than '96 and '99 (two of the vintages it was up against) aptly described by my colleague as having great energy and life. A great bottle of burgundy especially from magnum.

This is fabulous Echezeaux in a great place. It smells of Chinese five spice powder, smoke and red and black fruits. It is full and detailed in the mouth with flavours that have awesome clarity. It has good drive through the palate and length is admirable.

First Dinner in Burgundy (Bistro de l'Hotel - Beaune): Really sensational, my Wine of the Night in a great first night in Burgundy. Red cherry and strawberry aromas, slightly mature with some reduced mushroom notes, plenty of licorice and cloves in support. Same moderately mature red cherry flavors, great textures and balance throughout. Very long and impressive in every way.
The nose was Asian spice central with its Chinese five spice and freshly grated ginger smells. In the mouth it was pure with bright red fruits, a touch of beef stock and some spice. It had great detail and cut and a silky mouthfeel.

Beautiful Color, and a generous nose displaying floral notes, as well as red and black berries infused with spices and tones of sandalwood. A mouth-coating palate, with soft tannins and a medium-bodied profile that nevertheless delivers much flavor. A long finish with notes of violets and cloves completes the experience. It is difficult to judge the drinking window, as it appears to not have developed all the secondary aromatics that it has potential for, but at the same time does not seem to have the tannins or the acidity for the long haul. I'd suggest drinking it from now and until 2019.

Another Saturday at Knightsbridge - mostly blind (Northbrook, IL): Tasted double blind. Great red fruit on nose with some hints of emerging sauteed mushrooms. Elegant and greatly textured, particularly on the long finish, which shows great intensity.

Not nearly as good as a bottle we had a week ago and I suspect that it had some low level taint. There’s was also beef stock to the aroma with some smoke and orange peel. It did breathe up ok after an hour or so and had a lot more intensity, power and drive than the 97

This wine is an example of why we are sick when it comes to red Burgundy. The layers of berry fruit, the evolution in the glass, and the spices that can only found in the best vintages by the best Burgundy producers are what keep us coming back time and again in search of that elusive red Burgundy experience. This wine has 3-5 years left, but will not improve, though it has no need to.

Nose of earth, spice and red fruit, solid cherry nose and mid-palate. I've had very few DRCs but I agree with those that say the nose is distinct... and beautiful. As the wine opened up in the glass, it remained bright and still youthful with dark and red fruits present.

New Year's Eve 2009 (Chicago IL): Opened roughly 6 hours before serving. Powerful, seductive nose of dark red and black berry fruit with elegant spice, floral, and mineral notes. 13.0% alcohol. Tight nose at first. With plenty of air, this became very showy. An amazingly complex wine. Red cherry, earth, flowers, and intense spice on the nose. Had this at the Fux restaurant in Lech am Arlberg, Austria. A classical example of of a good Burgundy in my view. Sweet on the nose with ripe and sweet berries. "Smooth" is the word to describe the palate, more sweet fruit and little hint of tannins. Overall a very enjoyable bottle which could have been a lot bigger and still emtied this evening. Ready to drink now but still has years to go.

Deep ruby in color; On the nose it had dark fruit, spice and minerals leading into the same flavors with some smokiness. I was expecting some leaness from this wine given the wine and the vintage but there was none. It was still primary as expected but had the most beautiful velvety mouthfeel with a long, aromatic finish. It was probably better than other vintages of this wine that I have tried. [Decanted 1.5 hours prior to serving; Drinking well now but could use years to mature. Maybe 2011 for the next bottle]

Boy did I pop this one way too early, at least I have one left. As the other notes indicate, this should age and age and age. Great structure, components, and fruit. Some initial steminess on the nose masks some of the spice. Notes of stone and I think black fruits overpower the red fruit notes. Mid palate sweetness gives way to a very firm and lengthy finish. I really like the spice on the nose and palate. This should be stunning over the next two decades.
After 45 minutes this is starting to put on some weight and sweetness on the palate. I don't know what this costs in today's market, but I almost have to say (thought it is difficult to use this term with DRC) that this might represent some value at release price.

DRC Tasting at Classics Restaurant: A slightly reticent nose of roses and sweet candied strawberry and cherries with some allspice and clove oak influence. Wonderfully round and mouthfilling, and fuller than any Echezeaux I've had from DRC. Beautifully textured without any hollow parts. Fruit profile reminds me of an '02 burg which covers some of the firmer '01 tannins and build. Great Echezeaux! ****

Tasting at Wine and Cheese Show - The highlights: Awesome dark leafy nose. Big taste, which was not fruity but was very rustic leafy merde like. I really liked it but others were concerned it was corked. The funk blew off and I got a lot of flavor, but it was almost dirty like. I guess it could be considered terroir. I think this wine will last forever, as the acids are very tight on the back end. Boy, I am sure the big boys are great in this year.

This wine is an example of why we are sick when it comes to red Burgundy. The layers of berry fruit, the evolution in the glass, and the spices that can only found in the best vintages by the best Burgundy producers are what keep us coming back time and again in search of that elusive red Burgundy experience. This wine has 3-5 years left, but will not improve, though it has no need to.

a gorgeous ruby color with exotic aromas. It was bold and lively with spice and dark fruit that turned to red as it sat in the glass. So young, but it is fantastic to drink right now.

Fruit forward palate with great structure and outstanding balance. Savory spice throughout and nice grip to the finish. Another great showing for this Echezeaux. This is in a very nice place now, but will easily last.

New Years 2009 (Chicago, IL): Really pretty, sappy, sexy red and black fruits. Forward and surprisingly open; firm structure, but somewhat in the background with young, open fruit the most dominant component. Very good DRC Ech.

Dinner at Home with Friends (Chicago IL): Opened for 5 hours before serving alongside the 01 Grands Echezeaux. Sour cherry and berry on the nose with savory herb, mineral, and lots of powerful wood spice. Fruit forward on the palate with sweet baking spice throughout and a great balance of mineral and acidity. Seemed to be in a better place right now than the Grands Echezeaux. An outstanding Echezeaux.

Christie's Private Pre-Sale Tasting and Dinner (Amsterdam): Compared to the Dujac Clos St. Denis deeper and more structured, spicier, a lot of wood, very pure, still s bit unformed but opens up beautifully over two hours.

Decanted for 1.5hrs. Dark color. Briary dark red cherry with a bit of rhubarb and great spice (nutmeg, clove, allspice) on the nose. Very luscious palate with lots of sweet spice and great minerality. Fantastic acidity with a nice grip on the finish.

13.0% alcohol. Tight nose at first. With plenty of air, this became very showy. An amazingly complex wine. Red cherry, earth, flowers, and intense spice on the nose. In the mouth, elegant, balanced, and unbelievable purity. The spice is at the forefront of the palate, supported by the bright cherry fruit, earth, flowers, and minerality. Strong acidity. Brilliant finish that just keeps going on. Lovely wine. A
