My last bottle of the 2011. When it was first released close to 10 years ago, it was not very good. But we re-visited it in 2021, and what a difference 10 years made. I have had a couple more bottles since then, and it continues to drink wonderfully. We did not have to decant. It was ready to drink immediately after opening

Had pretty average expectations, thinking we might have let this one go too long and we were right. Color is browning. Lots of the savory characteristics coming out - mushrooms, green peppers, maybe some hints of dark fruit left, but not much. I think this is past it’s prime, we had it with some chocolate, maybe it would compliment some meat or something better?

This was the time when I became u enamored of Pheps wines. They are fine, but I kept noticing off flavors and aromas. This 2011 is still drinking fine but is not overwhelming. I think they started to diversify too much and lost focus.
Edit: 55 was a mistake, not sure what happened. Thank goodness we have another bottle of this as it was so smooth. We did aerate for about an hour (before I read others notes) and I’m glad we did. Not a wine connoisseur but I do love a nice red and this one hit the spot with my ribeye.
Drinking absolutely marvelous now. Remarkable improvement since it was younger. Was great last year, and still just as good this year. No need to air out. Opened, and served within minutes

As we have noticed with several other Napa wines from 2011, they have finally hit a nice drinking window. Nine years later, absolutely no hint of some of the weaknesses of that vintage. We opened the bottle about a half hour before pouring, so I don't know exactly how it tasted immediately upon opening. But I saved a half glass for the second day, and would recommend drinking the entire bottle on the first day. So, it probably was ready to drink within the first few minutes of opening. It was balanced, and drank well with the steak. There still remains a mild amount of tannins, but very slight. While it is ready to drink now, it probably can last at least a couple more years.

A very good Cab Sauv. This is definitely ready to drink now, but I could see it carrying a bit longer. Not a huge, in your face CS, but heavy enough for big meal. Big purple color, very dark. Nose of cherries, plums, cedar box, and hint of anise, no distinguishing heat. Soft front of dark stone fruit, builds to big deep dark flavors with tight tannins and earthy finish with light licorice. Dark plums, white pepper, bing cherries, tobacco and a very subtle tamarin flavors. I opened and drank almost immediately, flavors were immediate and didn't change.

This smells and tastes as though it had been vinified from black currants rather than grapes. This is a full-bodied, balanced claret-style red with a lot of life ahead of it -- it's probably five years short of its peak.

Best showing was about 1/2 hour after opening when it was delivering a nice balance of dark fruit and structure. And then over the next few hours the fruit plateaued and the structure extended its grip across the palate and finish. I found it an enjoyable quaff in the first hour, notable since 2011 was such a difficult Napa vintage.

Very similar to the bottle I had a few months ago. Opened three hours prior to dinner. Dark fruit on the nose. The palate is dark berries, plums, coffee and a touch of mahogany. Finish was moderate to long. As I have previously said this wine is a very good showing from a tough year.

Opened and let sit for an hour. The first few sips had a lot of funk but the wine came together after being opened. Dark fruit on the nose, the palate was dark berry, plum, mahogany and coffee. Moderate to long finish. A good showing from a touch year.

Dark in color, reasonable nose of blackberries and spice. Reasonable acidity and tannins beginning to get in balance. This has not progressed much since tasting 2 1/2 years ago. I think the 2011 vintage can only be taken so far. Probably can drink up in the near term.

A decent though green wine that cannot overcome the limitations of the vintage. Dark ruby in color, medium in body, nose of boysenberry, stems, and eucalyptus. Tastes of sour cherries, green olives, cocoa, and green pepper, with a curt and chalky finish. 14% alcohol. Blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot, and 2% Petit Verdot. The fruit has faded in the past year, so I think it is time to drink up.

Decanted through a vinturi and drank over a few hours, dark fruit on the nose, the palate was blackberry, black plums,, raisins, some tobacco and a touch of oak. The finish was smooth and of medium length. To me it seemed to open a lot quicker than it did the last time I had a bottle. Considering its one of the "problematic" 2011's it was a very good bottle of wine.

Two hour decant, bland, not enticing at all. I struggled through the first day. Second day was more bland and alcohol was more pronounced. After a half a glass I decided to stop punishing myself and pour the bottle out and open something else. Disappointing.

Moving wine around in my cellar and decided to try a bottle, realizing the 2011's can be troublesome, I decanted through a vinturi and let sit for a couple of hours. My efforts were rewarded. Dark fruit on the nose and the palate is blueberry, current, tobacco with just enough oak, a nice long finish which brings out the flavors of red plums.

Exceptional, but needs to be decanted. Enjoyed with a steak, charred medium rare with blue cheese. Great aromas of berry and cedar. Palate highlights vanilla, cassis, blackberries. Long finish, great memories.

I had this wine twice over the past week. Back on 4/26, on a basic PnP with a Filet Mignon dinner and again on 4/29 from after decanting 30 min and drinking over the next hour. The wine was far superior with the air time. It had fleshed out and was layered with black fruit and cassis and a bit of spice. As has been pointed out, this vintage is a little different than 2010, a bit leaner and sleeker perhaps. While I preferred the 2010 (I am a fan of the more opulent style) this was itself an excellent effort. It clearly bested a 2011 Stags Leap Artemis, and a 2011 Ca' Marcanda (Gaja) Promis Toscana that were also served at dinner.
Love the Phelps, a definite winner in my book

A different cab than the 2010. Cooler vintage, 13% merlot, leaner profile. I like the green pepper notes, along with currant, plum, coffee, tobacco. Long finish keeps you wanting more. It's a pleasant change of pace to drink a young napa Cab that isn't dominated by just fruit and oak. Tannins will take a while to integrate, but plenty of structure will carry this quite awhile. It will be interesting to see how this develops over time. But pretty darn good already with food and afterwards.

Tasted at Joseph Phelps (Freestone): Nose of mainly dark fruit (cassis/dark cherries), some earth, caramel, some pepper. Medium-full bodied but not heavy, there is medium tannin and medium+ acidity. Good length. Great Cab from this amazing winery.
