Light crimson in color. 16% ABV. Sublime nose of red fruits, cocoa, earth and pepper. Medium body with absolutely exquisite acidity. Perfectly balanced. Raspberry liqueur, cherry compote, spearmint and pepper on the palate. The finish is incredibly long and seamless. The first vintage of Carlisle Hayne and it tastes like Mike Officer had been working this vineyard for years. Tremendous Zinfandel. Best over the next 1-2 years.

There is a ton of old vine Zin sap in this wine, and it stays strong for 3 days. Focused plum and dark berry liqueur with a bit of clove. The alcohol (16%) is giving this a very port-like character. Food pairing is tough. Maybe best with chocolate desserts, strong blue cheese, etc.

Brambles, boysenberry, cherry, warm spice, an umami note like black olive, a bit of tannin, and nice acidity on the palate. Bramble and cherry finish - exquisite balance. Possibly one of the most elegant OVZ I've come across. Fabulous bottle opened at a great point in this wine's evolution. Drank upaired.

Rich, loamy, baking chocolate, hint of sanguine elements like black olive. Deep purple, tannins fully resolved so a softer style. This is ready now, not the structure/acidity to warrant further aging. Hides its 16% very well. Paired against an interesting bone marrow and deeply charred roast octopus, and the grilled notes and mouthfeel of the marrow worked well with the wine.

This was one of the best zinfandels I've ever had from Carlisle, and rivals the best Hayne zins I've had from Turley. This wine feels 100% true to Carlisle as it clearly honors this revered vineyard and the price I paid for this wine is shocking. I believe Mike probably made very little profit from this Hayne fruit. For those who say that 2011 is an "off" vintage is not true. It is a great vintage for north coast zins and even more so for old-vine zins that scoff at consecutive years of drought. This Hayne is more fruit driven than its Turley counterpart and less greenery, but it certainly has a spicy, peppery element that makes it a great pairing with a variety of meats. I would have scored this wine a little higher, except that I think I enjoyed the first two hours of this wine more than the last one. I was sort of sad when I drank this wine, as I know that Beckstoffer purchased a large parcel of the Hayne vineyard and replaced some old vines with cabernet. I know Turley has been trying to save the old petite from Hayne, but I don't know if this zin fruit for Carlisle comes from vines ripped out by Beckstoffer.
Fantastic Zin. This "off" vintage produced some of my favorites Zins because of the restrained balance. The refinement of Hayne shows through. A bargain for this vineyard.

There is something about the 2011 Carlisle's. Not what I think of as a great vintage, but right from the get go, it is obvious Mike nailed it, at least for his Zins. Purple in color. The nose has black cherries, brambles, a bit of black pepper, and a slight char. On the palate, this has a great texture. Juicy acidity. Vibrant black cherry and black raspberry fruit. Long finish. Supple. Every sip is so good I want to take another. I have one bottle left of this that I hope to age, but I doubt I will have the patience.

Pop and pour. Aromas of blueberry, boysenberry, cherry, flowers and spice. This is smoother on the palate than I would have expected with big flavors of blueberry, dark cherry, boysenberry, current and other red fruits. Ends with a 30 second finish. Very tasty!

Maybe too early but I'm starting to wonder about the 2011s, just not up to what I'm used to from Carlisle in better years. High alcohol is evident. Fruit appears after about 30-45 minutes of air time. Definitely needs some air time before consumption.

PnP at a restaurant and drunk a half hour later. Perhaps a bit simple/plummy on the back end but otherwise a silky presentation of bramble fruit and cherry with a dash of something like pink peppercorn. Didn't show any heat. Drink now-2017, the acids are well hidden now and there is no midlife fat tire of chocolate milk - yet.

Nose: Good minerality with aromas of flowers and cornbread. Palate: Dark fruits with some raspberry qualities. Finish is pretty solid and like the last bottle (notes on 8/14/14) this hides the 16% alc level well.

Not my favorite of Carlisle '11s but this also seems to be in a tough place. Great expressive nose (after an hr of air) of brambly fruit and exotic spice. Palate was much tighter, high toned, and showing some alcohol. Finish with a touch of vanilla and some tannin. Not as seamless as most Carlisle Zins, as they have created quite an expectation. Still, despite the 16% alcohol had plenty of freshness and structure. Needs a couple years to settle.

Deep, ruby color. Aromatic, powerful nose of red, lush fruits with sweet pipe smoke. Off-dry to medium sweet. Medium tannins with great balance-to-acidity. Red raspberry and boysenberry with cracked pepper & Asian white pepper on lengthy finish. Suggest giving it 1 more year in cellar.

I've been waiting a while to try this Zin from the historic Hayne vineyard and was not disappointed. Crushed berry fruit. Great ripeness without being jammy or over ripe. Richly fruited with a touch of acidity. Right up there with the top Carlisle Zins.

From a Zin experience, this ranks up there as one of the best. Dark garnet red to black in the center. nearly opaque. Love the nose on this, some alcohol, but this blew off. It's got crushed berry compote, crushed hot stone, and some sweet charred wood, for days on the nose. Then the Raspberry Jam explosion is followed by some baking chocolate on the mid-palate, and that common pepper pick on the finish,,.. which lasts for well over a minute. Gosh Mike Officer knows how to make a mean Zin Field blend. Just killer!

It took an hour to settle down, but was a great combination of lithe and substantial with spiced red cherry, linzertorte, and complementary oak. A little medicinal on the pnp but at times equal to the best Carlisle SVD with a more feminine yet less polished (for now) profile. Drink remainder 2016-2018 when the acids settle further. 90-93 over 2 days.

2 1/2+ hour decant (mag decanter). Nose: Herbs and cement aromas with minerals and red currents. Palate: Surprisingly very high toned and red fruited compared with other Hayne vineyard offerings I've had from other producers. Bright and juicy with cherries and some raspberry. Finish is austere and light to medium. Hides the 16% alc levels amazingly well. Not a rock star but well made and enjoyable. One more left and perhaps another year or so sideways will bring out more in this. 90+ points for now.

My 1000th note, and it seems fitting to do it with one of my favorite California producers. The old saw that you buy producer, not vintage, is apt for this wine. A tough vintage, but Mike pulled another rabbit out of the hat with this wine, which shows ripe lush fruit on the nose, and follows with tangy, spicy, zinberry fruit on the palate, fabulous acidity, nice medium weight, and some interesting complexities with notes of anise and dried herbs. A wonderful Zin.

A subtle zin, well balanced but the fruit is holding back and needs some time to come out, when it does it combines with the pepper spice and mineral notes to make for a really complex wine.

Thought I would like this (being Hayne vineyard), but though well made, it did not work for me. Some nice fruit taste (if I bit too extracted), notes of dark fruit, licorice, plum and tar/asphalt, but to monolithic and a bit out of control with some heat.

Tasted over 2 days. Classic and lovely Zin brambly aromas and flavors. Deep and rich fruit core with a slight hint of oak. There's a strong streak of tart acidity on the attack that could use some bottle age to integrate better. Noticeably riper than the several 2011 Carlisle Sonoma-area zins that I've already tried. Fruit almost reaches "jammy" status, but not quite. This is drinkable and enjoyable now, but I'd think that will come together completely in a few years.

1 1/2 hour decant. Wine was showing well. Had with traditional Thanksgiving dinner. My wife really enjoyed it and I respect her palate immensely. Disclaimer: consumed under some duress as I was waiting to pass a Kidney stone, hence the limited notes and no numerical score.

Lush on the nose with some black pepper and spices. Delicious palate with juicy acidity and lots of raspberries and more spice. Great zin.

Immediate Pepper and spice that dissolves into a fuller flavor and then leaves with a bit of oak. Can drink it now, but would imagine it can benefit with time.

This is drinkable and enjoyable now, but I'd think that will come together completely in a few years.

nice young zinfandel with cherry undertones and moderate tannin structure. Was anxious to try this as compared to the Turley version. needs more time to round out and really show its stuff.
