Aromas and flavors of plum, fig and blackberry are mingled with some burnt notes. This full-bodied wine is dense, thick, fruity, pleasant, solid and structured. It is made in a kind of New-World-influenced style, though: where are the notes of black pepper, tobacco, smoke and black berries, so typical of the Northern Rhône reds?
There are some signs that the fruitiness is starting to fade, so the wine may be on its peak at the moment.

Excellent.

From the wine list at Del Frisco's (Atlanta). Great value for a restaurant wine list and really delicious. The nose on this was black fruits and black olives. On the palate this initially opens with dark fruit followed immediately by savory olive tapenade - paired perfectly with grilled filet mignon. This really delivered a lot of drinking pleasure for the price and we will try to seek some of these out for the cellar.

Opened with grilled rack of lamb. Pure Syrah fruit, still youngish, but with no obtrusive tannin and a firm acidic spine. Nicely balanced with no alcohol showing and little evidence of oak. By the end of the evening it had taken on more savory notes with flavors of olive and a saline finish.

Chave-a-thon (Trentina's): Another nice buy on a restaurant wine list. Ruby/purple in color. The nose boysenberries and minerals. Tart boysenberries on the palate. Not much complexity but very easy drinking with a good acidity for food. I believe the retails for under $40.

I had expected more from this. The berry aromas and flavors are simple, and the powdery vanilla flavors, due to oak aging, are very evident. This wine is balanced and correct, but not much more.

On adore !

Yes! Nice, fresh wine. Purple at the rim, red in the core and quite light in appearance. Nose was leather, mint. In the mouth silky, fresh, with light oak, green pepper, cassis, mint, mulberry, smoke. Pleasantly sour in the finish after an hour or so of air, with sour cherry there too. Very drinkable.

Old World Blind Tasting >$25 (Bin 75): Darker core, dull violet rim; young, reductive, tire, almost grapey, black plum, black pepper, violets; fresher palate, sweet dark fruit, plum, slight black pepper, almost smoky; nailed it on the head!

Followed an 08 Hermitage at the Chave tasting, another mediocre vintage. Chave again worked his magic on this 2011. Lots of fruit on the nose and palate on this very young wine. Fruit dominated the nose, but there were hints of spice and barnyard, a really pleasant nose. The palate showed a lot of balance, big tannins, lots of red fruit, med/long finish. No one thought it was another Hermitage, but most were surprised it was the Offerus. Nice value. We speculated that JL Chave won't let anything leave his cellar with his name on it unless it is really good, especially after the Mon Coeur that came later.

Superripe dark red fruits are balanced but good acidity and freshness. Tangy and crisp on the finish with delicious flavors of licorice and graphite minerals. A quaffable wine with character that's great with barbeque.

Decanted for 1 hr. Color is deep red. Nose is earthy, spices, somewhat musty, cassis—typical of the region. Mouthfeel: medium body. Medium-high acidity, somewhat bright tannis, peppery taste and bite, dark fruit. A nice medium-length finish, where you get a lot of spices, a peppery note, and again the dark fruit (cassis). This is a decent wine, but for $30 I am slightly disappointed--maybe we were expecting too much--I wanted a bit more complexity and depth. Didn't feel this wine would grow with age either. The wine looks ruby colored. The legs are medium. There is no sediment in the bottle.

Old World Blind Tasting >$25 (Bin 75): Darker core with reddish violet rim; baby aspirin, raspberry, bread dough, tart cherry, black pepper; juicy, high acid, elegant, tart; tasty; was on Grenache until tasting it and then called it St. Joseph.

I agree with one of the reviews that this is not a great representation of a Syrah, but nonetheless it is a very good wine. Medium to full bodied. Tannins and acidity are well integrated making it very well balanced. Nice oak on the nose but not very noticeable in the taste. Black and red berries dominate but are soft and smooth.

Nice, but not great rendition of syrah. Intriguing nose that doesn't quite all come together on the palate. Medium finish. I wouldn't expect this to improve much.

Opened yesterday at restaurant (this is the negociant version of Chave St. Joseph). Paired well with a ravioli pasta. Intense, earthy nose, great acidity and rather tannic at first. On day 2, this was intensely fruity and some of the earth had disappeared. An interesting St. Joseph, but not as interesting as the Vernay St. Joseph from a few days ago.

Dark reddish purple core with bright purple rim; violets, black pepper, plum, grilled meats, vanilla; larger than I remember the last bottle being, still very fresh and drinkable just not the most complex at this stage of development.

Tasted blind. Medium ruby in colour with a purple hue. Medium+ intensity nose of cassis, black berry, black currant, black cherry, red cherry, vanilla, nutmeg, cedar, chocolate, mint, smoked meat, savoury, leather and earthiness. Medium+ acidity, medium tannins and medium+ body. Black cherry, red cherry, rhubarb, cranberry, chocolate, savoury and vanilla on the palate with a medium-long finish. Very good wine.

88 - 90. I'm finding it more difficult to rate wine on a 100 point scale these days. This wine is really good. Is it a 90 point wine?.......who knows, but for $27 I'll drink it. Color: Vibrant purple, Nose: Floral perfume on the nose with baked black and red fruit pie. You also get some forest floor. Palate: medium bodied with nice balance. Crisp acidity keeps it fresh and smooth. This wine has a lot of energy. It's not that complex but rather just a great sipping wine that goes well with a variety of food.

Given this against chave's own st Joseph it's hard to believe they're from the same producer. It's quite modern and simplistic with vanilla extract, black cherry and blueberry, medium body and quick fruity finish....
