About two hour before leaving for The Coto Country Club for our first non-homecooked meal on Thanksgiving in a really long time, I searched the almost complete wine inventory for a nice Syrah. My first reaction was discovering how many nice bottles of Syrah we had. I chose the newly arrived 2010 Joseph Phelps Syrah. I opened and took a sip. Great color, almost a deep violet. Viscosity was silky but not chewy. Can’t say much else upon the quick sip. Once at the table it had opened and mellowed quite a bit. Very enjoyable. Similar characteristics to my wife’s CdPs. Plenty of ripe fruit feel and taste. Aroma was a tease and hard to nail down. I got earthy and bushy smells, but mostly the plate of good fruit feel. It went well with the bird, but especially with the pear sage mushroom dressing. I’ll admit I was hoping for a comparison to the magical Le Mistral and Du Vin Mistrals of years past, but this was a very good wine.

No formal notes, but this was quite good. Very different and cooler climate style than the 2010 Alban Reva served right after.

Deep color, nice zestiness, with dark fruits. This had a nice aroma, and a muted finish. Everything in balance.

Clear, deep garnet with no rim browning. White pepper, bramble, black plum. Low acids, medium to low tannins. Mint. Medium balanced finish.

Aromas and flavors of dark fruit jam. Decent finish. A little heat on the back end.

Deliciously balanced. A bit of pepperish bite at the finish but opened up nicely. Wish I had been more patient.

Exceptional! Deep color, nose of spice. Enjoyable, well-balanced bouquet highlighting oak, black pepper and blackberry. Long finish. Cheers!
