This supposed "legendary" bottle was a big let down. I have come to the conclusion that Leroy and DRC are far and away in a league of their own and Rousseau doesn't even come close. Hard pass for me at it's current price.
Perhaps the best and the most complete Burgundy that I have ever had. Still young with sweet oak and tannins. Bright fruit and great complexity. Beast that met my expectation.

An Amazing Rousseau-based Burgundy Dinner with the Seattle Vinous Group (Seattle): Medium ruby, between the 2002 and 1996 in saturation. Again, an intensely fragrant, complex whole cluster aroma, but this is more equilibrated with red berry fruit than in the 1996. Perfect medium weight and feel, kaleidoscopic, dynamic interplay of the red fruit and savory pieces, beautifully incorporated acidity, gentle earth on the finish, and little in the way of tannins. A great Grand Cru at its peak. The hands down favorite of the entire group.

Rousseau Chambertin Clos de Bèze: 1964 - 2014 (Per Se): Gorgeous nose that has intricate berry fruit, cool spices, and subtle terror influence. Fresh and pure, wonderfully expressive. In a great state of development, plenty of robust fruit but with so much earth nuance and terroir character. On the palate this is delicious, perfectly rounded, and has earthy red and black fruit with coffee tones. Great showing.

From magnum. Expressive dark red berries and dark soil tones. Very deep. Certainly fresher in this format and has not yet reached a peak. Consumed over six hours, gaining in complexity for most of that time in bottle.

World's Greatest - Night II (Daniel): Bright red and black cherry. Lively and youthful. Perfumed. Palate is big upfront but fades quickly. Not a great deal to the finish. I guess '93 is pretty finicky, and the context of the lineup doesn't help.

Two friends sharing three bottles of wine (Da Domenico Ristorante, Mclean, VA): Explosive youthful nose displaying intense black and red fruits, blackberry, raspberry, cherry, liquid smoke, rose, espresso, dark spices, a hint of sous bois and earth. Perfectly harmonious sensual palate, still a hint of tannins and a seamless long finish that ends with intense dark fruit and smoke. This is an extremely youthful example. Drinking incredibly well!

Rousseau Chambertin dinner. Wine of the night for me. Very pure, ethereal and elegant. Sweet with palate richness. Great rose petal notes across aroma and palate. From Greg.
Rousseau Dinner (Vaucluse): Expressive and nicely developed nose. Clean and pure. Very fresh, high acid. Savoury with a kiss of spice. Developed on the palate but retains good power and the high acid provides a loud and long finish.

Still remarkably primary with sweet fruit, wood and vanilla traces and a sappy nose. Loads of ripe fruit. Lots of potential here but this is not yet suave. Daresay another 10 years is required and will last for a long time beyond that. 94-95+

Rousseau Chambertin Clos de Beze event; 9/11/2015-9/12/2015 (Capella Hotel Georgetown): Elegant but expressive nose displaying pure red fruits, a hint of cherry and raspberry, beautifully perfumed, cedar, mint, sweet spices and earth. Very precise and energetic palate, silky, subtle slightly dry red fruits, nicely integrated tannins and seamless long finish. Just like the 91, seamless, vibrant and exceptional balance.

Beautiful nose and much more focused on dark fruit and minerals. A bit of asphalt, earth and mushrooms. Slightly floral and more red fruit on the palate. Next to the CSJ and Chambertin, this seemed a little chunky, but I am sure on it's own I would have given it a much higher score. Nicely mature and still has plenty of life left.

A perfect bottle sourced by Omar Khan in Europe and enjoyed with dinner at the Four Seasons in Geneva. Beautiful nose of medicinal cherries and minerals. Needed time in the decanter as this is very much a '93 with a steely structure and austere profile. That being said, the wine is perfectly balanced and gorgeous within a medium-bodied package with a texture of liquid granite and an extremely refined character. The cherry fruit is crisp and fresh but this wine is all about the incredible mineral flavors right now. Still fairly primary but drinking beautifully in a vin de garde style; the fireworks truly begin on the finish with a secondary kick of flavor and complexity that only appears in the greatest of wines. This has a very long and bright future. Wow! 96+

Side by side of 1993 Rousseau Beze and Chambertin. Both were good, but Chambertin was clearly the better of the two. A great duo, and while both were definitely ready for drinking, there is no hurry with these 93's.

A little reduction at first that blew off. Unlike the Chambertin a couple of years ago, this wine was not showing all its splendor -- the 1993s I've had in the last year seem to be in a closed phase. Nevertheless, the magnificence was quite evident and this was, by unanimous consent of all four at table, a wine that stood at the top of a very very lovely group of dinner wines: 1996 Dujac Clos Saint-Denis, 1996 Truchot-Martin Clos de la Roche, and 1969 Drouhin Charmes-Chambertin. The texture is silky, yet the structure is there with this wine, there is a glossiness but also a purity to the fruit, depth but also an airiness. It will, in the future, make a staggering bottle.

Still stemmy and tight on the palate, dark coffee - not too impressive. This must not be a representative bottle. Nose - 5/6, Palate - 4/6, Finish - 4/6, Je Ne Sais Quoi - 1/2 = 14/20.

Quite full bodied for a Chambertin with loads of primary fruit, both red and black: black and red cherries, strawberry jam, licorice, plums and ink along with some sous bois nuances. Velvety palate with very refreshing and fruity finish. Elegant mature tannins and good finish. A very satisfying burgundy, still very young - needs maybe ten more years to show its full potential. At this stage it is a remarkable wine but still bellow my expectations for what it should be.

The Big Two (Bar Boulud): So rich and primary. At first the aroma is so rich it's like a creme de cassis reduction, with a structure that's just as powerful. But there is a ton of fruit material here and the structure is quickly saturated. It's a blend of red and black fruits and it feels almost luscious in its intensity, picking up an anise/licorice thing after sitting in the glass awhile that in other contexts might make it seem a little candied but in this case the structure keeps it serious. I held this in the glass til the end to see how it would develop but it remained one of the richest wines on the table and surely has decades ahead of it.

Let the fireworks begin as in the glass this was explosive, exotic and promiscuous - flirted with aromatic perfection. On the palate was vitality, energy and lift. It had what appeared to taste like the highest acidity of trio. It rose above, perched on a pedestal like a king to his throne. From the density to the balance, the beginning to the end, there was no fault. A wine to beg for.. F'ing amazing.. Note, this shelled up after 2+ hours in the glass and while the ride blew me away and I would be tempted to hold for another 2-4 years.
