for the most part 2011 has been disappointing this bottle started out the same way but after 4 days in the fridge this integrated with fruit and volcanic ash that made sense so go figure

Ruby in color, intense nose of red fruits and forest floor. Nice acidity, full body, black currants, black cherries, blackberry paste, forest floor; grippy tannins, oaky ending. Very comllex and expressive, rustic. In a great spot now, but can age well for a few more years.

Still loads of primary fruit, black cherries and plums with some tar/charcoal. This is holding up very well and I think that the RP drinking window up to 2030 is probably reasonable. Excellent wine.

New one for me. Blend of 80% Aglianico & 20% Piedirosso from the Campania region of Southern Italy. The volcanic soil is evident right off the bat with a nose of iron and other minerals. Nice fruit profile of blackberry and dark plums with notes of fresh herbs, black olives, black licorice, and earth. Still nice acidity and tannins with a good long finish. Interesting wine indeed.

Dark, brooding aromas of plum, blackberry and soil. Slightly meaty. Reminiscent of old port or CNDP. A slightly enigmatic aroma hangs in the glass. Plasticine? Bovril? Serrano ham? I can’t quite put my finger on it.
Excellent to drink with a bit of peace and quiet and needs little else. It doesn’t have the acidity or tannin to drink with dinner but that’s not necessarily a criticism. It’s very enjoyable and worth the money. Much more interesting than a mediocre Barolo of the same price.
I like some age on a bottle, but this is ready to drink for me and I wouldn’t wait much longer. Not past 2025. Enjoy!

Starting to barely brown… Nose is iodine …graphite…dark red fruit.. Rustic, plum , iodine , firm tannins… It’s an interesting wine but somehow feels a bit disjoiinted… not sure it changes much with any more age..

DAY 1 Served with the Vinlog System 👃Purple fruit, tar & mint 👅Earthy with cassis & plum, volcanic ash & fresh tobacco. Mod complexity. Long dry finish with tannic pull
The remaining wine was Slow Decanted™ in my refrigerator
DAY 10 👃Less mint & more cooking spice vs Day 1 👅Volcanic earth and graphite with purple fruit, dark chocolate, tobacco, & licorice
Drinking well as a fruit forward wine. Will improve as tannins continue to soften. Love the volcanic notes🌋 that dominate

Very dark ruby. Tar, blueberries, dry rocks on the nose. Rich dark fruit on the palate, salty, somewhat spread out and unstructured with prominent but soft tannins and a mild acid frame. Not sure where this wine is or where it is going. But perfectly pleasant with a beef short rib burrito. [Upgrading this to a 90 after tasting the remainder of a Coravine'd bottle.]

Truly outstanding paired with a well seasoned NY Strip and just as good on night two with lamb shank and gnocchi. This seemed even more elegant, aromatic and smooth than my last bottle a few months ago, while not losing any of the interesting cassis, tobacco or volcanic character that makes this so special. 93+

Similar to WGMcALUM’s note. Really singing at the moment, more so than even a year ago. Ten years may be the right amount of age for this impressive cuvée.

Dark ruby with garnet bricking. Pronounced aromas of black fruit lilac, tar, and crushed rock. Deep concentrated prune fruit with a generous warm acid frame and firm integrated tannins. Lovely progression into a long aromatic finish.

We had this along with the 2010, and while the flavors were consistent, this one was more accessible, softer, and a little less vibrant. Still, I enjoyed this one, too.

I like the nose here better than the 2010 - more open/accessible, and again, more red-fruited. But this may not have the weight of the 2010 on the palate. Off this first look, the 2010 feels more substantive, younger and with more upside in the future.

Big and chunky with dark chocolate, cherry, raspberry, loamy earth and notes of tobacco. Plenty of acidity and very juicy red fruit, drying tannins on the finish, but overall an interesting balance to this wine. Rustic and suave at the same time, quite foreign to me really. Quite interesting.
Consistent with prior notes. Intense aroma of licorice, maquis, cassis and cedar. Secondary notes of chocolate and coffee. Initially quite grippy on the palate, but evolves and smoothes considerably with air. Paired well with a prime NY Strip.

Opened and decanted for 1-1.5 hours, then enjoyed with a grilled Porterhouse. Held up and paired well to both the Strip and Filet sides. Wasn’t quite as bold as a young Rosso or big shouldered Brunello, but held up well nonetheless and was definitely different in character. I picked up on the spice, tobacco and chocolate notes with this pairing. Two nights later the balance of the bottle was even smoother and a touch lighter. This time it paired exceptionally well with fettuccine bolognese and bucatini carbonara. A crowd pleaser- and a rare red that my wife raved about both nights. This is squarely in its drinking window, and it’s a keeper.

Dark ruby. Black cherries, plums, liquorice nose and palate. Well balanced and long finish. Really good wine, drinking very well now, not sure on longevity, although RP suggests another 10 years. I hope that’s correct as 1st bottle of a case of 12.....

Vibrant aromas of licorice, lilacs, black plums, and chilli chocolate. Broad spread of salty sweet tannic fruit on the palate, dense and penetrating with a powerful aromatic back note moving into the long entwined tannin acid finish. A wine of great balletic grace and powerful muscularity.

A blend of Aglianico (80%) and Piedirosso (20%) from vineyards averaging 15 years. Macerated with the skins for 20 days. Aged for 12 months in new Alliers and Nevers oak barriques. 14% alcohol, 5,3 g/l acidity and pH 3,7. Total production approximately 32,000 bottles. Tasted in a Terra di Lavoro 2011-1997 vertical.
Almost fully opaque and very slightly hazy blackish-red color. Big, ripe and quite polished nose with very Cabernet-like nose of sweet blackcurrant, some blueberry tones, light toasty oak tones, a little bit of chocolatey mocha oak, a woody hint of pencil shavings and a touch of black cherry. The overall feel here is that of a modern Bordeaux, not Campanian wine. The wine is ripe, full-bodied and juicy on the palate with flavors of sweet blackcurrants, some blueberry tones, light toasty oak tones and lighter nuances of savory oak spice, a little bit of astringent chokeberry character, a sanguine hint of iron and a touch of leather. The structure relies mostly on the high acidity; the tannins are ample, but so ripe that they contribute mainly to the chewy texture, not to the structure. The finish is dry, long and very gently grippy with quite intense flavors of sour cherries, some redcurrants, a little bit of extracted woody bitterness, light peppery tones, a hint of earthy and a crunchy touch of astringent chokeberry.
A big, ripe and accessible effort for an Aglianico-driven blend. Riccardo Cotarella's fingerprints are all over the wine; it shows less sense of place and comes across more as a modern red wine made to be a Southern Italian facsimile of a Napa Cab or a contemporary Left-Bank Bordeaux. Not a bad wine in any way, but these glossy, modern red wines really don't cut it for me. I want my Aglianicos robust and tannic, not soft and oaky. In the vertical tasting this vintage came across as noticeably oakier and more modern than the rest of the vintages, but we couldn't make it out whether it was only because of the age or if the winemaking had changed with this vintage. Nevertheless, I can imagine this vintage will benefit from further aging - in the hopes the oak will integrate better with the fruit.

Nice wine, more focused than older vintages, I would have thought young.. but seems like the hot 2011 vintage helped here and this wine is already enjoyable at this stage, sure will improve with time but it was a nice drink already now, less ageing potential than other vintages like 2010 I think. Very perfumed, flowers on the nose and a good balance, palate tannin quite soft, but good acidity

Much more approachable than the last bottle that I had. It bursts forth with scents black tea, white pepper, and some volcanic funk. This is a pleasant wine, but I don’t think this wine is great like it is in the 2007, 2010, etc vintages. We consumed the entire bottle in one evening after a two hour decant. I wish I would have kept a taste for day two, but my hunch is that it would not have held together well. No harm in opening bottles now.

Coravin 10/22/18. Deep purple-black; nose is moderately aromatic, black fruit, spice, slight volcanic; palate is full bodied, youthful rough tannins, limited plummy black fruit, medium acidity; medium finish. A serious wine in body and texture, but less complexity than I was expecting for the price point. I didn't give it much air though, and it likely needs it... I'll do that for the next glass/rest of bottle. 86 Rest of bottle, 6 hours decanted. More approachable, tannins are still present but much more integrated and less rough. Fruits come out a bit more. Nicer, but a more rustic wine. 88 Hour 8, a bit more bitterness and showing a bit of heat. More of a food wine, not for sipping on its own.

Even after a 3-4 hour decant this wine was still pretty rough around the edges. Very tarry and tasted more syrah like than aglianico. I think I will let my last 3 bottles sit for at least 2 more years.

A pretty yummy wine but a bit hollow mid-palate. Strange. Everything else is lush and balanced with warm stewed prune flavors with a red fruit band on the finish that seems - oddly - cherry cola. Anyway - the wine is good but seems as if it should be much bette at age 7. I don’t think it’s going to improve much, if at all.

Started off tasting a bit medicinal. But by 1.5 hours after decant, the flavors of aglianico really came out. I would recommend 2 hours. Fine wine, but $57, hard to justify. Still, a great wine.

Still tasting fine, but it's not a long term keeper now. Sort of dark and brooding is my emotional reaction to this one. It tasted fine the first day, but was clearly over-oxidized the second. Didn't decant.

The 2011 was forward and intense, yet maintained wonderful balance considering it’s ripeness. Here I found notes of plum with ripe cherry, brown spices, tobacco and sweet herbs. On the palate, silky, dark textures with cool-toned black fruit gave way to saturating spice and minerals. Zesty acidity maintained balance and accentuated the wines spicy nature along with a twang of bitter herbs. The finish was long, showing tart cherry with a coating of young tannin, yet still fresh and lively. This may not be the longest lived Terra di Lavoro, but it has the potential to give a lot of pleasure for many years to come.

While much more toned down than the 2010 it's still delicious. Simultaneously earthy and highly perfumed- a combination that's hard to resist. It lacks the size and weight and follow through of what this vineyard can produce, but all the elements are here in a satisfying and harmonious way. Jump on it if you see it on a wine list, but you don't need to seek it out for the cellar.

Popped and poured. This is a medium-red wine that shines bright in the glass. The nose is highly complex and changing throughout the bottle; experiences include sweet-sticky raisin, rock dust, ship metal (both raw and rusted), herbal tea, and ashtray. In the mouth, this has juicy sensations, with medium fruit and an overtone of ash. The finish is nice and chewy — there is some licorice root and slight raisin. This is a complex wine that evolves fast and through many levels in the glass. Very unique. 91 points.

Explosive aromatics right from the pop. Graphite, charred plum skin, violets, cocoa powder, ripe fig, and chalky minerals. The wine appears inky in glass. It's intense and pure. Med-high acidity, long and rich as it dances across the palate with its purple black fruit. Very exciting wine and appears to still be a baby.

Still very tightly wound, but the purity and abundance of fruit make this very potable today. Beautiful aromas of tobacco, blue fruit, herbs, and BBQ, were easy to coax from the glass with a few swirls. I'm saving the rest of this case for a few years.

Plan B for spaghetti night as the Tallulah MD1 was corked. So, I went another direction! This is a nice bottle, although took it probably 30 minutes to kind of blow off a lil bit of funk. Poured with a slight violet hue. The initial notes are floral, black cherry, clove, sweet tobacco and herb. The clove note blows off the bottle and replaced with a little more tobacco. Entry predominantly black cherry, sweet tobacco, and herbs. The middle of the wine has a bit of a green touch to it. The finish of this wine was a bit more acidic than I thought. Nice wine, and glad I have more back vintages as this 11 is a TOUCH young.

So much better than the last bottle! Decanted to facilitate the opening and found some solids in the bottom of the bottle. Let rest for a few hours and tasted. Initially, it was quite nice, but still rather closed. We drank a bit of it with our meal, but saved most of the bottle for the next day. By then it had completely opened. It tasted remarkably good. So clean, so deep, so rich, yet so elegant. Flavors of dark red and black fruits. Medium length finish.

Dark violet, with blackberry-colored core and inky in the glass. Plum, blackberry, charcoal, and aromatic spice on the nose and palate. Polished and very firm mouthfeel , with extraordinary degree of acidity. No bite or rough edges. As with the 2010, there is a prominent volcanic ash minerality present on the mid-palate, finish, and nose that I find really appealing. I think this 2011 is more approachable than the 2010 at this point. Wonderful bottle.

A wine cult producer, owned by three cousins, who inherited this beautiful estate set on a dormant volcano on the slopes of Roccamonfina. They could call this some sort of DOC but from the begining they decided no! We are different.
Above sea level 450 meters, about 10 acres large, surrounded by chestnut trees.
80% Aglianico, 20% Piedirosso. 12 months in used and french barrique. They think that is the blend. The vines are 60 to 70 years of age. The essenace of volcanic soil.
Dark cherry jam, strawberries and cranberries. Soft entry on the mid palate with graphite and mineral, sulfite I am being told (but good, Zul-ful (?) a type from the area). If you blind taste in Aglianico this will always stand out. And mineral, powerful, exotic, unique I am being told and that is very true. Doesn't suck. Big but all there.

Very dark color. Nose of ripe fruit, sweet red peppers with a herbaceous background. After some vigorous aeration, some wild cherry aroma, but wine is still closed. Dry in the mouth, cherry medley and a iron saltiness mingling with the powerful tannin. Long powerful finish. Brawny, needs to mature to remove some of the sharp edges. Great food wine, but not for the faint palates.

I will start by saying I love Aglianico. I decanted 3 plus hours, even Vinturi'd a sample. Pretty darn tannic. Hard to see the fruit. I will definitely rest this wine for 3-5 more years. It is hard to get a reading on where this wine will go. Since I am not really enjoying it young, I might as well age it and see if I get lucky and it turns around.
Right after opening it was quite frankly udrinkable because of the extremely high acidity and drying tannins. I did expect the bottle to be way too young, but I have never tasted such a high acidity and so I had doubts it could drastically improve with airing. After 3h it was in a much better place and was drinkable, but still quite a bit of acidity for my liking.
The tasting on the second day was a whole different experience. Balanced and showing an interesting character that I'm not sure I love, but I definitely enjoyed.
Definitely one of the most interesting wine tasting experiences I've ever had. This is a bottle you want to let rest for another 5-7 years (I'd even say 10!).

Birthday/Aglianico, 58 Port, ++ (My home): My WOTN. The group seemed split on this, love it or hate it. Inky purple in color. The nose has black cherries and x-mas spice. On the palate, this seemed quite young and powerful. Juicy black cherries and a wall of tannins. It was a bit drying on the finish from the tannins at this point. The fruit is quite ripe here and maybe on its own that would be an issue for some, but in this setting, it is delicious.

Exceptional nose with sweet cassis, charred oak, thyme and spices (not as volcanic as '09 Galardi). Palate is fleshy with nice sticky tannins however it quickly thins out in a short medium finish. Vini d'Italia Tour (Altanta): Similar color as the '10; licorice, tart strawberry, cherry, orange, slight pine; juicier on the palate than other vintages due to its youth, firm tannin still there, young; delicious.

Really powerful nose of licorice and ripe black cherry with notes of bitter chocolate and coffee. Very rip fruit flavors of black cherry and blackberry with lots of acidity and a robust texture. There is a fine density to the wine and the finish is quite tannic with notes of bitter chocolate and Indian spices. I prefer the '10 vintage as this may have been left hanging on the vine for a touch too long for my palate.
Decanted for 6+ hours. Unlike the 2010 vintage, which I have tried on multiple occasions, this one never opened up. Flat and subdued, quite underwhelming.

So nice to drink a young Aglianico based wine not buried in tannin! I suppose the riper/less acidic profile of this vintage could jeopardize the long term prospects for this wine, but it is a wine of substance and interest now. The nose is sort of like dried tomatoes and cassis, with a palate of blackberries in harmony with savory charcoal and eggplant. Serve with a hearty meaty stew. This note written a week in arrears. 91+

Primary ripe black fruit with forest decay, pencil lead and campfire on the nose. On the palate, the wine shows a dense and sappy black fruit profile with fresh acidity and a mineral core that is something akin to ash or gun flint. Speaking with Arturo Celentano, one of Galadri’s four owners, he noted that the 2011 is much like 2008 in barrel which was immediately approachable just before bottling. He added that the weather in 2011 was similar to 2008 and it was not necessary to green harvest in either vintage. This was a barrel sample. The wine will be bottled the week of April 15, 2013. 35,000 bottles will be produced.

Tasted @ Vinitaly 2013. I was lucky enough to taste the 2011/2010/2009 next to each other. These are very unique and absolutely stunning wines made from 80% Aglianico and 20% Piedirosso. Very primary but intense nose of rocks, smoke, dark fruits and bacon. It will probably close down at some point. Dense and powerful body but with a very beautiful sense for harmony. Fresh acidity and ripe tannins. Will probably age for a very long time. Very impressive.

I like some age on a bottle, but this is ready to drink for me and I wouldn’t wait much longer. Not past 2025. Enjoy!

DAY 1
Served with the Vinlog System
👃Purple fruit, tar & mint
👅Earthy with cassis & plum, volcanic ash & fresh tobacco. Mod complexity. Long dry finish with tannic pull
The remaining wine was Slow Decanted™ in my refrigerator
DAY 10
👃Less mint & more cooking spice vs Day 1
👅Volcanic earth and graphite with purple fruit, dark chocolate, tobacco, & licorice

Rest of bottle, 6 hours decanted. More approachable, tannins are still present but much more integrated and less rough. Fruits come out a bit more. Nicer, but a more rustic wine. 88
Hour 8, a bit more bitterness and showing a bit of heat. More of a food wine, not for sipping on its own.

91 points.

Found this to be unusual and different from what I usually drink, but I liked it. Interesting bouquet with hints of honey and olives. Dark purple color and modestly tannic. I don't see this as a long term keeper, but will enjoy what I have left.

Missing the stuff to make it age for decades but ready to please right now. Always a hit and a must have for any cellar 92+

Opened and decanted for 6 hours before serving. Beautiful nose. Complex black and blue fruit tones. Long and complex finish. Wait 2 years before trying again.

This has a little more fruit clarity and a little less cowshit than the 09, but I'm still not feeling it.

Mismash of hasty impressions from Winebow and Regal Portfolio Tastings (NYC): Barnyardy; 14% ABV, darker color. Riper/more candied than 09. A tannic, tiramisu caramel finish. These wines are not for me.
