Tried this with a spicy bratwurst concoction. Hmmm. Didn't complement the dish as I had expected. Gassed half the bottle and will try again. My last note suggests that it just needs time to open and resolve. We'll see...

Interesting arc over the evening. When first opened, the wine was rustic -- showing a coarseness and brambly flavors but with good fruit. After an hour or so the wine smoothed out. Both versions were fine, but we preferred the latter. Score from the end of the evening.

An amazing $20 bottle of wine, despite it being from an unappreciated indigenous Austrian red varietal, which presents here like a hybrid of ripe CA syrah, and underripe Loire Cab franc. The bouquet hits you on two separate tracks: a high end protein bar with dates, figs, cocoa dust and graham cracker, and a smoked paprika, wet cedar track. This is rich and voluptuous in the mouth, suggestive of plum pudding , acidic black cherry juice, and candy cane. Subtle dry tannins throughout, but the finish shows stemminess and red bell pepper. I also love the elegant glass stopper under the screw cap; be careful not to use a corkscrew! This isn’t getting better, but should be delicious for 3-4 more years.

Friday lunch at Birba with Tim (Birba, SF): Blind 3 - Red Wine: Opaque ruby-purple to a ruby rim. Dark fruit on the nose, with slight manure and slight oak spice (baking spices) maybe also stemmy-woody character. Palate: elevated alcohol, 13.5%? Bitter tannins (medium minus tannins). Just medium acid. Oak showed a bit more on the palate. Had no idea what this is. I think I guessed Spain because of the oak.
This was served a touch too warm and is a bit acid-deficient for me. Umathum 2011 Zweigelt, Burgenland.
Score: around 8.

Medium ruby color. An interesting nose of cherry, raspberry, baking spice, licorice, floral, and then a little earthy, funky (wet leaves) note. That plus pepper on the palate. Had to do a vigorous aeration to blow off the excess CO2 that made it quite prickly to start with. High acidity, medium- tannins (soft), medium body, medium alcohol (12.5%). Very fruity, light medium+ finish. A nice, light drink. Chilling to about 60 degrees helps.

Needs time to open- about an hour decanted. Nose of pepper and lingonberry. Soft texture with dark red fruit through palate. Some spice with relaxed tannins on the finish.

Weekly tasting group #096; A fully blind test. (@ AH): Fairly dark red with a purple hue. In the bouquet cherries and some green, herbal impressions. Juicy cherry fruits on the palate, fairly soft tannin, some sweetness and bitterness. Ok, quite basic wine.

The nose was bright and fruity with a mix of ripe wild berries, brown stems, mountain herbs and hints of minerals. On the palate, it was soft, showing ripe red berries and herbs with hints of earth. The finish was refreshing and clean with lingering woodsy berry notes. This was fun to drink and would make for a great warm weather red as it's as fresh as it is fruity.

An interesting experience. Salty, mineral laden red fruit - a touch of blood and iron in there with reddish fruit coming through. Very powerful and persistent on the palate but never overdone. Quite taught and lean despite the size of the wine. With time this really blooms out of the glass. Should keep for quite some time and develop over the next few years.

A little harsh at the start, but smoothed out as the bottle got air. Pleasant, but unremarkable bottle. Nice with a Wednesday night dinner!

Perfectly balanced wine, but not much of flavor profile development with aging, it more has lost the fat and oomph.

Consistent notes and score from
when last reviewed July 2018. Perhaps showing a bit more acidity, a little less fruit. A perfect pizza wine!

A bit alcoholic on the nose, good notes of spices, peppery, dark fruits. Not very structured, lean bodied, bitter tannins, ok acidity, short finish.

Netter "easy-drinking" Zweigelt mit viel frischen roten Früchten. Keine große Tiefe, aber sehr nett.
