Dark straw colored, almost orange. It's certainly a strange wine and suspect this could be oxidized. That said, there's much to enjoy. The nose has some tropical fruits, bananas, and honey. The palate is thick, lush, and seductive. moderate acidity and medium length finish. Drink now.

Kleur: Middel goudgeel. Deze 2004 Ch. No food needed. Deze Beaucastel is er één van. Briljant! 50 + Kleur: 5 + Aroma / bouquet: 12 + Smaak / Afdronk: 15 + Algemeen / potentieel: 8 = 90/100

Color: Medium golden yellow. Aroma / bouquet: Undoubtedly a somewhat tiring, over-age Ch9dP for many, but for me this is enjoyment. Packed with overripe white fruit. Overripe pineapple, overripe banana. Chervil. Floor wax / candle wax. A hint of orange peel / Grand Marnier. Taste / Aftertaste: Wowww. What a beautiful glass of wine. Low acidity and therefore perhaps a bit bulky and tiring (but not for me 😉). Concentrated, thick-juicy, a hint of refined wood. An impressively long finish. General / potential: There are few white wines that can easily promote from starter wine to main dish wine to open-fire wine. This 2004 Ch. No food needed. This Beaucastel is one of them. Brilliant! 50 + Color: 5 + Aroma / bouquet: 12 + Taste / Finish: 15 + General / potential: 8 = 90/100

Deep golden core. Banana, pineapple and apple on the nose. Unlike a previous bottle I tried just last week (which tasted more like fino sherry than white wine - not an awful thing, but certainly not what I expected!), this is not oxidized, but appropriately mature for a 13-year-old white. Very full-bodied; balanced acidity; ground cherry, gooseberry, subtle flavors of tropical fruit on the palate, mixed with something waxy, almost savory, somewhere between pumpkin/zucchini and nut meal. Long length. Very lovely indeed.

Popped and poured at home, from a bottle bought on release. Color was an unusually deep orange gold, making me wonder if I'd opened a bottle of "natural" wine. The cork, however, looked perfect. Concerns were quickly dispelled after smelling and tasting the wine. A beautiful mature white CdP, becoming more mineral and nuanced after an hour of air but still with a thick waxy roussanne core. A treat.

This wine has developed wonderfully. Honeyed citrus and white stone fruits with great nuttiness to it. Palate is soft but still had some acidity to keep you coming back for more. I am very happy with where this wine was. Beautifully golden in color, but not at the end of it's life.

A very nice bottle, not my favorite, but you can tell the wine had great structure, lots of welcome acidity and quote smooth. Others would have scored it much higher than I did (93-94 was the consensus), but this is my CT account ! The CB '04 Red was fantastic!

Pale yellow color. Shy nose of honey, wool, lemon, and almond. Palate has an oily texture with beeswax, lemon, almond and lanolin carrying into a medium finish. After a rather oxidized bottle from the same case a few years ago, this was refreshing surprise and still showing as in the middle dumb phase of development that I tend to expect from white Rhones that go the distance. Drink or hold, depending upon your risk tolerance with oxidation.

Chateauneuf du Pape, France - Tasted at Domaine: The 2004 White CdP had an off-taste, almost oxidized. I asked our guide about that and he explained that the Beaucastel white Chateauneuf du Pape wines develop nicely for 5-6 years and then go into a shut down phase when they become oxidized and then open up again in about 6-7 more years. This wine was in the oxidized phase and should blossom in a few more years. In the meantime it was the first white CdP I had tasted from Beaucastel so I could only believe what I was told. All in all, an interesting phenomenon and wine.

The color was very dark, much darker than I expect from 8 years old white. The acidity was low in the beginning and sitting in the glass and opened bottle brought it back to life. I don't know what to make of this wine. Allegedly it should be good for another 15 years, but I just don't see it happening. Bought on release by Ron and stored in his cellar ever since.

The bouquet seems to be oxidized. The palate as well. A lot of nutty flavors and firm bitterness in the mouth. Soft acidity. See also my note from 2009. I don't have the experience myself yet as far as I can recall, but an expert said that the white wine at a certain moment closes down for about 10 years and then comes back as a very great and complex wine. For now I will believe that and I will not score the wine.

Deep amber-orange color. Aromas of tangerine, burnt orange peel, and apricot. Palate follows with apricot, some varnish notes, orange, tangerine, buttered pineapple, and an oily element that carries into a medium finish that has plenty of VA afterburn. Works with a mixed cheese plate at the middle of the spectrum (no veined cheeses, but that might work too). Somewhat alarming color, but an interesting wine and very drinkable to me. Probably drink more of these on the young side if presented with another buying opportunity I can't pass up. Can't see this changing much for a long time. Drink or hold.

Yellow-gold color with glints of green. Waxy, floral, buttered popcorn nose I typically get from Roussanne. Palate shows oily texture, primary fruit with dense floral nectar essence, and flavors of beeswax and buttered corn. Finish is moderate to long. Still open for early-drinking business, but I suspect it was brighter a year ago and is starting to shut down. No doubt that it will make the transition to good old white Beaucastel around age 12.

Initially a very restrained nose revealing apples. May have guessed White Bordeaux had I tasted it blind. With time (1-2 hours) honey, roasted nuts, and a slight note of caramel emerged. This is quite big in the mouth and even gets bigger towards the back end. Very smooth and distinctly "wet" in the mouth. Well concentrated, but not nearly as oily, thick, or muscular as the more expensive V.V. The highlight is currently the finish which explodes with an essence of warm apples and honey. An impressive wine, but I would pay the extra bucks for the V.V., which is currently more expressive and larger scaled.

Hospice du Rhone; 5/3/2007-5/6/2007 (Paso Robles, CA): 80% Roussanne, 20% grenache blanc. On the nose, this is waxy, with alcohol and guava notes. This wine is complex and acidic, with cantaloupe notes. Waxy, rich, and slightly fatty. A hint of something that seemed like TCA but not quite. Seemed like this is a really nice wine but not showing well. Marc Perrin said this had shipped just a week prior - assuming this was travel shocl.

HDR- Day 2 Seminars (Paso): We all indepently came to the conclusion that the wine in our glasses was corked. We tried another glass nearby that was better, but still kind of musty. Didn't know what to think of this. Afterward I found out that the sommeliers had great difficulty figuring this wine out. They didn't pour a bunch of bottles, b/c they seemed off, but came around later. Obviously this wine is going through an extremely difficult period and I'd have to try it again later on.

Smoked game, black cherry, good tannins, nice noise and mouth fell but finish lacking. While Parker gives 93 and WS gives 96 points; I rate 90 and even lower if you factor in price. Price is $38/375 bottle. I have bought this wine in the past and unfortunately the 375ml does not age like the ratings might imply.

Tasted at the domaine. The nose offers bright fruit, floral aromas, and a slight barnyard aroma that I found endearing. Great palate presence. Slight green apple taste. Long finish. Really a great wine. PS -- I asked if they thought the 1998 Blanc would be worth opening in the near future, and was told to hold off for at least five more years.

Beaucastel (Eva Restaurant): Light straw color. Moderate intensity nose of white fruits, honey, and coconut. Soft acidity with a medium-full body that is lush and smooth.

France Trip Part 1 - Châteauneuf-du-Pape; 6/16/2006-6/17/2006: Tasted at the domaine. Sweet green apple and honey. Nice, if somewhat straightforward at this stage.

Tasted at the domaine. Rather full-bodied. spicy. Appley fruit. Good texture / mouthfeel. One of the best Beaucastel blancs I've had.
