  • My last bottle, deep yellow, not too deep, first nose with ripe honeysuckle and pear, developing into very ripe pineapple. Some toast and nuttiness, subtle spice. Very round and ripe, but with great acidity to keep wine very much alive. Awesome bottle. ( kept in very good cellar, transported from estate straight to home in 97 )

  • Super-rich nose of backed apples, dark honey, toffee and cinnamon. Very dry, spicy, oxidative, orange rind on the palate. Dry finish. Hardly enjoyable anymore.

  • Sweet dried fruit nose with rounding touch of oxidation. Dry, flabby and dull on the palate. No life left.

  • Bested by the 96 when enjoyed side by side. More evolved than the 96 and seemed to have a little less of everything - fruit, acid, structure. It's always relative and the 95 seemed a bit anemic, by comparison. Still, a nice bottle of Meursault.

  • Tasted blind among a series of white burgs at the Adelsons. No detailed note, but I remember its unctuous texture and richness.

  • Completely lost in the forest of bottles at Kenwood Restaurant at the BWE pre-convention dinner. No flaws, but didn't arouse much comment around the table of mostly white burg novices. For me, too polite compared to the blockbuster I was hoping for, yet not flawed in any way.

  • Splendid classical Meursault from this very ripe vintage. The brilliant medium gold color had me a bit concerned about premature oxidation, but there was none. Awfully reticent on the nose, even after 2 hours in the decanter and another hour in the glass. But the flavors of thick ripe oranges, butter and hazelnut leave no doubt this is a terrific Meursault in its prime. No hint of over-ripeness or botrytis and just enough acidity to hold this large scaled wine together. No point in waiting any further for this beauty. Quintessential Meursault in the big, bold, voluptuous style.

  • Like a sleek jet plane that takes off smoothly, but levels out at just 3000 feet, this is a lovely wine, but there's just not enough to it. Couldn't read the color very well in a dark restaurant, but the unopened bottled purchased from WineBid in 2003 seemed pristine. Delicate scent of cold butter and just a hint of nut. Good, but not great, texture in the mouth and tails off gently. As it warmed up in the glass, it became a bit more generous, but then faded. This would be excellent for a villages, not bad for a lieux-dit, but falls short for a premier cru from a rich vintage.

  • Medium golden colour. Explosive nose of walnuts, almonds, roasted coffee, smoke, and licorice. Beautifully elegant and suave in the mouth. There's so much style and finesse to this wine, in spite of its broad and forthcoming structure. It is medium-bodied and packed with ripe fruit. The oaky overtones are perfectly acceptable - I'm really not keen on banana and butter flavour. Things are perfectly in check here, and this wine is drinking beautifully right now. I would have thought this to be tight, and opened it out of curiosity, but the bouquet is wonderfully open and the structure and profile of the wine is very forth coming. The long lingering finish is balanced and pleasing, ending on honey notes.
