Cherries, black cherries, mushrooms and forest floor on the nice nose. Round and juicy in a medium bodied package, and a fine finish with exiting sweet fruit. 92-93 p.. A little tighter on day 2, but the fruit is still great, wish it had a little more punch.

My 60th (Abbot Street, Ngaio, Wellington, New Zealand): A regal wine from an esteemed producer, from a cool vintage. At the age of 25, this is totally ready for business with gorgeous fresh dug field mushroom aromas, steely Pinot fruit, and a surprisingly vivid oak handling that still feels somewhat apart from the fruit. The balance is impeccable, the palate is ethereal, and the finish is beautifully modulated. This is superb wine.

Burgundy Wine Club 10th Anniversary Dinner: Very strong showing, although suffered for being served after a quartet of stunning older Richebourgs. This showed lovely roundness of aroma and flavor, and was prettier than the other two Chambertins it was served alongside. It did not, to me, offer the kind of complexity on the palate that I want from this wine - I preferred the 1994 I had a few years ago. I served this blind with two other 1998 Chambertins and most preferred this one, although some found the Bruno Clair to be at least it's equal.

I felt this was something like a 92-93 point wine tonight with just so much more in reserve. I have one bottle in the cellar, that i hope to hold to 2025 or later.

Dusty, earthy, red berry, firm tannin structure, long aftertaste. I wondered whether there was enough fruit for the long haul. After leaving it in my glass for about 2 hours, it opened up beautifully. Classy and complex. Superior wine

1st of 3, decanted an hour, perfect cork and level - darkish red, little development; aristocratic, multilayered bouquet, red fruits and roast meat; medium full, exceptionally long and persistent, concentrated, classy fruit covering fine grained tannins (a 98!), enjoyable but clearly a baby yet. leave next bottle 3 to 5 years. VF+ (19)........the best Burgundy of the weekend on prospects with the Engel Brulees 93 possibly more enjoyable today, though more forward, elegant and more enjoyable than the Beze on strength of my April bottle (I agree with FYC)!

Incredibly tight and acidic on opening. Decanted for a couple of hours which really opened it up. More structure than the previous bottle opened 3 years ago. Bright red fruit, medium weight. A bit more elegant than the beze. This is still improving and I would wait 5 more years on the next one.

Call this as it was tonight-- crappy QPR. Good wine, of course, and thankfully a bottle that was in great shape. From there: some stewed fruit early on, along with a general lack of complexity for the climat. Better towards the end, but never showing the balance one would expect. Impossible to call what to do for those who have bottles left -- try it and see what you think!

1998 Burgundy Grand Cru Dinner (Cheng Hu Tien, Keong Saik Road, Singapore): Wow. This was quite stunning. It still clearly needs time in the bottle, but man, this was a very, very impressive Chambertin. It had a killer nose, with beautiful, deep notes of red cherries and berries, little touches of earth, deep-set hints of sweet spice, and just the lightest kiss of oak. Wow. The palate still seemed so young, but it was clearly one of the most complete wines I have had in a long time. It had truly great depth and a muscular strength to its deep flavours red cherries and berries, yet this was elegant, effortless, almost graceful in the way it flowed through the mouth on a bed of velvety tannins and juicy acidity. Still monolithic, but seamless and perfectly harmonious, this just filled the mouth with layer after layer of red-fruited Gevrey goodness, just starting to show nice bassy, earthy notes on the midpalate. It is quite a testament to the quality of Rousseau’s wines that they managed to craft a wine of such class and finesse, with not a trace of brambly hardness, in a vintage like 1998. It had a great, long finish as well, with the last vestiges of juicy fruit flecked with little spicy accents. Beautiful stuff. This has come a long way from when I tried it 4 years back, but it needs time to open up yet – I would leave it aside for another 4-5 years at the very least, perhaps a couple years more to be safe – but it will be amazing when it hits it stride.

Armand Rousseau Dinner (Paris Club - Chicago, IL): Far more character than the 2001 drank alongside. The vintage characteristics of 1998 were evident here with a bolder, richer fruit profile on the nose. Lots of cranberry, pomegranate, sous bois, and dusty florals were seamlessly woven together. The palate was certainly sweet, but had nice dirty red fruit notes, beautiful acidity and a real sense of class. This will only improve with age.

Some Fine Wines (Imperial Treasure, Great World City): Again, tiny bit of stems on the nose with a deep solid core. This had more presense than the 1997 but in a much more quiet and unassuming way and some tension on the palate. As with most great Burgundies, this is actually quite difficult to describe. The balance is there, the power without weight is there, the transparency is there and of course sheer elegance. Perhaps I can imagine it as a cool and confident person, a feminine soul in a masculine exterior, personified by Joan of Arc.

Alcohol :: 13% This is almost identical to 1997 except this offer better depth on both nose and palate, it also has better, sweeter fruits. Darker ruby red than 1997. Sweet red cherry and strawberry with perfume violet, mineral and light touch of spices and coffee note, expressive, focus and seductive. More youthful and livelier than 97, still tannic, but very fine, polished texture accompany by lots of rich, concentrated pure sweet red fruits and grippy, refreshing acidity with earthy tones and dried fig. Good harmonious and very silky, lush mouth feel. Very good, long juicy finishing too with bitter oak after taste. This too a feminine Chambertin with good class and complexity. Still a pretty young wine. I hope the bitterness that appear at the end of finish will disappear with time, as it distract the overall drinking pleasure, though just a bit. Buy - No.

1998 Burgundy Grand Crus - Confrerie des Chevaliers du Tastevin Singapore, Chapitre de la Printemps (Harbour Grill, Hilton Hotel): Now we're talking. This was really good. A stand-out, as you would expect a Rousseau Chambertin to be. Lovely lush nose showed deep red fruit scents with such a nice purity to it, along with Gevrey tones of meat and earth. This was just a precursor to the palate though. Rich for a 1998, with lovely lush fruit, some pure red cherry expressions and lovely minerality all held up by clean, fresh acidity and the plushest of tannins. Lovely balance and structure here. This was one of the rare wines on the night that had top-class Grand Cru depth and concentration. Finish was mid-length, but had quite a bit of power to it and plenty more of that luscious red fruit. Still young, but already delicious - this wine had a beautiful future ahead of it.

Wednesday Night Blind - January 2010 (Peter Pratt's Inn): This was an impressive wine from the first whiff. It was a very light crimson color, but the aromas pouring out of the glass were intoxicating, it was massive on the palate, really strong note of brambly black fruit, beef blood and spice, yet it was elegant and deftly balanced. An absolute delight to drink. I was pretty convinced this was an older California Cabernet or even an older Barolo and stated "No way is this Burgundy", then the wine was revealed. That's why I love blind tastings. You learn something every time. This was my WOTN which is very frightening for me. I went back to it several times throughout the evening and it just kept changing and not for the worse. Profound wine.

Mostly blackberry fruit as well on the palate, with great concentration and overall balance. Nice smoky flavors, with just a trace of chocolate. Having read recently that Rousseau had had some success with the 98 vintage, we tried this wine. The oak was showing a lot just after opening the bottle so we decided to decant it for about one hour or so. The wine was showing much better afterwards, especially the nose which was really complex. Unfortunately the same complexity was not apparent in the mouth but at least the pinot character was clear and I appreciated that a lot - the mouthfeel was also nice and the wine seemed quite integrated. The finish was strangely clipped. Drinking nicely now, I don't see much upside but clearly enjoyable.

Not decanted. I was skeptical of this wine before opening the bottle, since it was from a pretty weak vintage in the Cote de Nuits. Cherry red with slight amber throughout. Big, enticing nose of black cherries, leather, and cola. Medium bodied and well balanced, with a slight green streak running through. Medium finish with fine tannins. Should be drunk up. Overall, well made and better than I expected, but not remarkable, and in retrospect another wine for which I drastically overpayed a few years ago. I want to try this wine from a better vintage, like 2002 or 1997.

Corked pushed and a touch of dried seepage. Not overtly cooked, but probably affected.

Rousseau Dinner (Knightsbridge - Northbrook IL): Incredibly lush nose, showing black fruit with great spice. Mostly blackberry fruit as well on the palate, with great concentration and overall balance. Nice smoky flavors, with just a trace of chocolate. This wine is still far from its peak but was excellent tonight, and will be far better 2010-2028. For me, a "96 point" wine. My WOTN. Consensus WOTN.

Lieu-dits-cru Rousseau Dinner (Knightsbridge): Full red/pink. Medium/full aroma of bright red fruit. Big bold red fruit and spiciness. Still some tannin - rich and concentrated but still tight. Needs time.
