Amazing QPR on this wine. Dark, inky, and delicious. Blueberry and baking spice over milk chocolate and espresso with a startlingly strong black licorice flavor that I just adore. This wine has a creaminess that reminds me of a good Aussie shiraz. Rich and delicious. Fantastic wine.

Cherry cola, black pepper, slightly pricked. Stripped of much of its fruit. Should have been drunk up a couple years ago. Not particularly enjoyable but OK.

i had no problem with this wine. it certainly is not declining or over the hill. it may not be as vigorous as it was a year ago. scores from other reviewers suggest that the sweet spot for this wine was 2009. i have to score a little more severely than parker since the wine is not profound. nevertheless, it is a better than average example of jumilla. i am impressed with the earthiness, dark color and dark fruit aromas.

Tasting this now trying to get my palate used to Clio 04. Just poured without decantation. After five years, some sediments. Potent nose (pencil, licorice, all-kind-of-berries confiture aromas, tipically Monastrell). In mouth, glyrecic, dense, still tannic juice. Not my short of wine but, understanding what it is, a very good example of modern Jumilla.

Had with BBQ burgers at the outerbanks. Initially very grapey fruit. Modest tannins that appeared more over time. Tannins taste like iron? Tar, tobacco flavors. Thin viscosity.

We drank this wine with basil/artichoke/tomato Pizza last night and it paired well. Full bodied with lots of fruit and subdued tannins. It was even better after the pizza with dark chocolate. The cherry notes came out stronger and developed a richness to the wine. How could Wine Spectator rate this vintage so wrong. I would give it a 90 and just wish I had another bottle in the cellar.

i drank this with mesquite grilled tri tip amid the chaos that is my family & am now savoring a glass in my office alone. the dark fruits are still there & this wine seems to be in a good place rigtht now. with the meat it was nearly perfect. the tannins are a bit more pronounced now that i am drinking it on its own. i would say this is a bit more elegant & complex than it was a year & a half ago when wiml had his. it has a smokiness that complements the fruit quite well. if pressed for a score, i would give this 92 points now. i think it will be very interesting to follow this wine over the next 5-7 years.

1 hr decant. Nearly purple at the core, this has a vibrant nose of black cherry, cedar, chocolate nibs and herbs. Medium+ body, with a lot of extraction and power. Drink thru 2012

No notes. This wine was about the best bottle I've had but not upon opening. Required about 30 minutes to an hour in the glass before it came along. I'd recommend a short decant.

A forcefully black fruit profile on display here, with perhaps a little smoke but little else in the way of real character. Substantial but not truthfully dry tannins make for a well balanced structural profile, however.

Better than the 2005 vintage. Delicious, even after only 5 minutes in the decanter. Dark purple, but it's not over-extracted like alot of Aussie wines we've had recently. Easy 90 points, maybe higher depending on your mood and what your eating with it. Would buy again. Smooth tannins. Nice middle ground b/w new world fruit, and old-world barn yard earthiness.

Delicious! Vanilla/berry on the nose, and later some tobacco. Big juicy blackberry flavor, a tiny hint of chocolate truffle, and a rich, spicy finish. A definite winner.

Popped and poured. Dark purple color, opaque. Nose is pretty complex, with black cherries, mint and damp grass, along with some dark chocolate. Palate is smooth, with black cherries, coffee and tobacco, with some oaky vanilla and dark chocolate hitting on the midpalate and fine tannins kicking in on the finish. There is a little bitterness on the finish that I hope will blow off with some air. This is the third bottle of this that I have had, and each one has been notably better. This is a really nice wine and a steal for the money - tough to find this much complexity and elegance for under $15. The fruit is nicely extracted, but not overdone, and the wine is well balanced with tannins and fresh acidity. 5+13+16+7.

Still a solid dark purple. A year ago, this had fresh and stinky complex aromas. It's settled now into more old world elegance with violets, roses, pine, cherry, and rhubarb of medium intensity. Good "punchy" fruit on the palate with really nice tannin levels. Medium acidity, medium+ body. Rewarding finish of medium+ length. Some might say "one-dimensional" but I would say "straightforward" and I like that this wine is confident. Could slip blindly in with many $50-$60 wines. Like that, too. (5+12+15+8) = 90

This wine has been blowing my mind for awhile. I've bought a case of it, and I've burnedthrough it like wildfire. Let this guy decant for a bit... and then freak over the nose. It smells like damp carpet, moldy wood, yet with beautiful sweet hints of butterscotch and carmel corn. I mean seriously, this wine has some really damp woody hints to it... like a rain-washed campfire with hints of evergreen in the background. On the mouth it was medium bodied with hints of big, black, greasy olives and picked beats. P.s.... did I mention the word "delicious" anywhere!? Wow.. this is a serious value for the price... and its still young! It feels like a power sander on my tongue.... Mmmmmmmmmmm... Buy this... Now.

Popped and poured. Dark purple color. On the nose, black cherries, mint, oak, some cedar and a little damp grass. Palate shows black cherries and some spicy tobacco, with moderate tannins kicking in on the medium to long finish. This is much better than the prior bottle, with the tannins and alcohol much better integrated and better presence of fruit. Very enjoyable - glad I gave it another shot. 5+12+15+7.

Decanted for 1 hour. Dark purple with nice dark fruit/spice on the nose. On the palate the fruit was subdued by medium tannins. Nice medium finish and definitely was better with food. Finished the bottle 24 hours later - wow what a difference-the tannins had softened and fruit/spice really came through. Will buy again but would wait awhile before opening.

Decent QPR. Dark purple with garnet hue. Big nose of red fruit, oak, spice, and earth. This follows through on the pallete, but not necessarily in that order. Medium bodied with firm tannins, well balanced acidity, but not well integrated. Will be better in a couple of years, but for the price, why wait.

Started off a little tight with a weird dirty sock, wet towel aroma. Decanted and revisited 1 hour later and much of it had blown off, but not all. Dark fruit emerged with forest floor, damp earth on nose. Same on palate with some drying tannins and a nice long finish. Evolved with every sip. Who knows where this one is headed but enjoyed very much tonight. Definite QPR here. Less than $11 a year ago.

Tasted October 4, 2007. Opened and served immediately. Dark garnet to purple color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose of ripe dark fruits, cassis, plums and berries with some notes of rose petals and potpourri. Flavors of black berries, maybe some blueberries, black cherries and a touch of bitters on the finish. Medium acidity, firm tannins, medium body. Drink now with a decant or hold a little longer.

Decent bottle of wine. Took about 90 minutes to open up. Previous to that the tannic backbone was a bit overpowering. Red berry fruits and a little bit of cherry on the palette with gripping tannins on the finish. I wouldn't be opposed to trying this again. B

Decanted briefly but drank over 90 minutes or more. Improved over time. This is sold wine, good fruit, long finish, solid tannins. As it evolved more cherry/berry and jam fruits emerged. Excellent with food. Solid value.

seems to have settled down from my last bottle, or finally the bottle variation sweepstakes came down in my favor. Nice rich nose straight from the get go, no or little sulphur or funk. On the palate, rich fruit and nice grip from the middle onward. Minerality, tannin and acid well mixed with the fruit to make this a good drink.

Popped and poured. Plummy purple color. On the nose, not a lot of fruit, a little mint and earth, but oak and alcohol dominate. On the palate, some dark cherries and chocolate on the attack are quickly overwhelmed by huge oak on the midpalate with drying tannins on the finish. Despite alcohol on the nose, not too hot. Pretty disappointing overall.

Very deep purple color. Aroma and taste of leather, dark fruit, oak, and clove with a moderately long finish. Enjoyable and great QPR. Slightly heavy oak and minimal complexity hold this vintage back from being truly exceptional. Would purchase, again.

Tasted July 8, 2007 at home. Opened and splash decanted about 39 minutes before serving in a Spiegelau Authentis Magnum glass. Dark garnet color in the glass, slightly opaque hue. Nose of black currants, hints of roasted me, melted red licorice some interesting florals and to completely plagiarize the WA some notes of scorched earth. Flavors of red licorice, red cherries, tart red berries and maybe some currants. Medium acidity, firm tannins, light to medium body. Nose beats the palate without a doubt. Drink with a minimum of an hour in the decanter or hold a little longer.

Disappointing bottle. Did not live up to reports about this vintage for Juan Gil, and did not compare well to past bottles from other vintages.
Dark fruit, but muted. Drinkable, but not what I expected. I thought that it might be slightly corked, but then the bottle improved slightly over 3 days.

Oak monster, has a decent dusty bit to it that is nice. A bit too much alcohol on the nose that would open up the fruit if it blew away. Just can't get past the oak though. Maybe with food...

deep purple color, inky. nose was a bit tight at first but opened up overnight. very interesting bouquet of fruity vitamins/ minerals (flintstones), cherry cola, hints of salt water taffy, sage and purple indica, leather and dried salted plum (saladitos). rich mouthfeel, sour cherry, tamarind, and pomagrante on the palate. firm mouth puckering tannins. might improve slightly with short term cellaring.

Much better than the past 2 bottles I've had. Seems to be some bottle variation with this wine. Popped and poured, dense, dark purple color. Dark fruits, coffee and vanilla on the nose. This is a big, complex wine for the price. A nose of cocoa powder, smoke. Chewy tannins that smoothed out after a few hours decanted. Hints of meat on the finish. I think WS missed the boat with this wine with an 84 point rating. A very good value.

Aromas – Moderate aromas, Red fruit, cherry cola, raspberries, oak, smoke, and hint of tobacco. Color – Deep Purple-Red, Flavor – Off to Medium Dry, Medium bodied. Moderate flavor intensity, Red cherries, sour raspberries, spice, licorice, hint of pepper Finish: Medium Finish Notes: Spain continues to be one of the best valued wines on the market, in my opinion. If you enjoyed the Garnacha grape, then the Monastrell (aka in France's Rhone Valley known as Mourvedre) is a little heavier, lower acidity and drier. Juan Gil is one of my house wine staples. Contrary to the pros.... oh my. I got red fruit all the way. Cherry, (Cherry cola came to mind), sour raspberries. Hell the “pros” are all over the board, WS gave it an 84, while RP gave it a 90. I tend towards RP more often than note. Back to the wine… the mid-palate introduced the smokiness and oak, giving way to a finish mixed with spice, licorice and pepper. Medium length finish with smooth mouth feel. Notes of bitterness from the tannin peek through. Side note: I did the tasting after the bottle was opened and then sat with just the cork replaced for couple day. I will have to revisit this one... easy enough! Recommend for anyone wanting to move slightly more towards the old world styling. Also, nice change of pace from many of the over the top fruit forward wines out there.

This is a very nice wine - good value too. It started out a bit rough but then really came into its own after being opened for a couple of hours. Full bodied but not over the top with a great mouth feel to it. Nice dark berry profile with a "meaty" element to the nose. Similar on the palate with mouth filling tannins that need a year or two for optimal taming. This is drinking good now (give it some rare meat) but will reward a couple of years of cellaring.

Wonderful wine. Full body, high alcohol (13% but feels stonger than that), super long finish (between 20 and 30 seconds), very complex. Dark fruit and cherries, flowers and "game" meat on the nose. Spices, vanilla, bacon fat, herbs and flowers on the mouth. Fantastic value. Will definitively buy again.

This unfortunate bottle was sacrificed at the first meeting of a "wine-making" group that Dulcie and I attended. Too late did we discover that people who like to make wine might not actually know or like real wine; they really like to ferment things - anything. Group members readily disclosed their general ignorance by the gasps of amazement at the taste and the grape name.
In the setting it was hard to make an informed note, but the general plumminess and restrained leathery spice and smoothness stood out. It did not have enough bouquet for the giant glass I had it in.

Decanted about 45 minutes. Over-ripe, spicy, jammy notes of blackberry, plums, prunes and oak. Simple and hard mid-palate with somewhat astringent tannins that don't seem to have ripen on par with the fruit, thus lacking balance, and integration. Finish is coarse and short. For the price, I expected much more. Agree with some of the notes here but I don't know if this really represents Jumilla. It seems a bit too rustic. I would consider Altos de Luzon, a much more polished product and a better example of the region. The tannins may soften up with some cellar time but the the over-ripeness and oak will not allow balance. Not impressed.

Big vanilla nose right at the pop but in the glass - as I see everyone struggle over how to describe the aroma - I can tell you exactly what the smell is: It's Agua Caliente racetrack in Tijuana. Or any racetrack with that smokey, earth, alcohol-cigar scent. It reminded me of being 5 years old again and my dad betting on the greyhounds while I pick up used stubs. Anyway, back to the wine. Great QPR, food friendly and a nice mix of raspberries, french vanilla, oak, licorice, a little spice. Nice pick of the week.

TB: Had been opened the previous day by my wife and vaccumed and thrown back into the fridge. Dark purple in color. Nose showed signs of currant, sour cherry, and white pepper. Palate showed lots of sour cherry, but seemed thin on the mid-palate. Medium finish.

A dark garnet with a light ruby tinge, almost violet around the edge. A lucid disc. There was a distinct yeast when I opened the bottle, after a blackberry immediately, an almost cut grass and lite mineral. Smoky peat, ash, and tannic. Very warm with a longer hotter finish. Citrus almost at the very edge. Good but a little harsh.

A bit of an oak monster, but it's got something to it. The nose shows lots of toasty oak with definite bell pepper and tobacco thrown in. On the palette, a bit like a Cali Zin, with a core of zesty blackberry, plum, (maybe a bit of prune) fruit and a considerably tannic finish. Definitely new world in style, but like I said it's got something going for it. This is going to open up nicely. Will note again tomorrow. Definitely wrong about this one. Next day has come. Still showing more wood than fruit and a mouthful of astringent tannin. Downgrading this to an 84.

Tons of tobacco at first and the tannins are hard...then after about 3 hours everything came together. Very dark wine with dark cherries, the typical Mourvedre strawberry, gamey, and still the earthiness of tobacco. If you drink it now...let it breath for at least 3 hours.

This was a very positive surprise, but only once this bugger opened up on day 3. First 2 days ok-ish, but harsh and hot finish dominated. With that gone on last night fine and excellent QPR (14$). Yes to the cigar, toast aromas. Firm well-integrated tannins and acid. Very recommended.

Dark, opaque purple in the glass, has a nice nose of cedar, red fruit and licorice. The flavors are suprisingly nimble, lasered in by a mouthful of chewey tannins. Chocolate, graphite and cherries. This really is nice and as noted, a bargain. 5+11+16+9=91

The best QPR out there. There is some deception b/c the wine looks so dark and inky - and the wine is medium bodied. However, the nose is nicely perfumed with cherry, raspberry and some brown sugar (the smell you get real quick if you sneak your nose into the bag). Also perhaps some licorice and spice there. The palate is silky smooth, nicely integrated tannin. I splash decanted and this baby is signing.

New Years Eve of Wine Insanity: A perfectly delicious bottle to enjoy while ding the dishes from the previous ten and accompanying New Year's Eve dishes (shrimp, salmon, cheeses, etc). Copious plummy and blackberry fruits, a supple and straightforward palate and texture, yet lacks the tannin and acidic backbone to age long term. Very pleasant now and into the new year, but iffy beyond '07.

Served directly from the bottle and drank over two evenings. The initial blast was bordering on an Aussie styled wine, HUGE fruit, blueberries, cherries, etc. Calmed down and settled into a nice, smooth wine. This wine does vary bottle to bottle quite a bit in overall taste and style it seems. This was good though.

Popped and poured, then drunk over three nights. Deep dark purple color, nose of dark berries and a little earthy but not in a funky way. On the palate there is dark cherry, blueberry and a touch of spice ending with a 25 second finish. This wine actually improved over the three days it was opened and by the third night it was a pleasure to drink very well intergrated with a medium mouth feel. A great QPR at less then $12 a bottle.

I took this bottle to a family Thanksgiving dinner and it was well received. Juan Gil has been a favorite of our wine group for a few years now. At $15 a bottle it is a great wine. Very smooth and soft, but the fruit combinations on the nose and the palate are complex. There is not much of a finish which keeps this wine from being great, but its flavour and price point make up for that.

Deep dark color. Spicy nose with black and blueberry and a bit of earth. Palate is full of dark black fruit with a spicy, mildly alcoholic mid palate. Finish is medium long with some jagged tannins that soften with time in the glass. Not as good as 2002 but better than '03.

Not bad, a little over priced even for Vancouver. It was much better on day two. The mouth drying tannins were tamed down. It took awhile for any noticable fruit to come forward on the nose, but eventually there was some nice candied fruit, and some interesting spice there as well, which came thru on the taste. Yet for $25.00 cdn, there are better Spanish wines for the price out there.

Based on the nose, I misidentified this one as a refined Grenache, rather than the Mourverde / Monastrell that it actually is. A bit one dimensional immediately after opening, but significantly better / richer / more complex after 30 minutes. Rich nose, medium body on the palate. Not my favorite style for a serious red, but very good for what it is at a very fair price.

Per Wine Discount Center - Bodegas Hijos de Juan Gil "Juan Gil" Jumilla 2004 13.99 91/100 - Our score. This one needs a little time to open up, but when it does, hold on to your hat! Produced from dry-farmed 45 year old Monastrell vines, this bargain-priced beauty proffers a deep, concentrated nose of black fruits and licorice set against a lovely woodsy background. There's a dense core of blackberry, cream and toast on the palate, which eventually gives way to a lingering minerally aftertaste. Still enveloped by powdery tannins, this ideally needs six months or so to come together perfectly. Enjoy it with something big and grilled.

About $13. At first I wasn't impressed with this wine, thinking it big but simple. Now the bottle has been open about a day and on the last glass this thing really shines. It's dark and deep in color. The nose shows red and black licorice, smoke, and syrah-like spice. Very nice blackberry and dark cherry palate. There's a tannic bite, but it's not too much for the wine, and nice balanced acidity. There's something about this that makes me want more. For the money this is a great deal.

i had no problem with this wine. it certainly is not declining or over the hill. it may not be as vigorous as it was a year ago. scores from other reviewers suggest that the sweet spot for this wine was 2009. i have to score a little more severely than parker since the wine is not profound. nevertheless, it is a better than average example of jumilla. i am impressed with the earthiness, dark color and dark fruit aromas.

I mean seriously, this wine has some really damp woody hints to it... like a rain-washed campfire with hints of evergreen in the background. On the mouth it was medium bodied with hints of big, black, greasy olives and picked beats. P.s.... did I mention the word "delicious" anywhere!? Aromas – Moderate aromas, Red fruit, cherry cola, raspberries, oak, smoke, and hint of tobacco.
Color – Deep Purple-Red,
Flavor – Off to Medium Dry, Medium bodied. Moderate flavor intensity, Red cherries, sour raspberries, spice, licorice, hint of pepper
Finish: Medium Finish
Notes:
Spain continues to be one of the best valued wines on the market, in my opinion.

Bitter sweet liquor with a tad of spearmint. It enters with a nice gush of fruit...mmmm! but then: Tightens Up! and finally relaxes on the slightly medicinal finish.

Tasted double blind. Dark color, with big blue and dark fruit notes. Firm tannins, with bright, juicy red fruit flavors. A touch of mint, maybe some eucalyptus comes through on the finish.

TB: Had been opened the previous day by my wife and vaccumed and thrown back into the fridge. Dark purple in color. Nose showed signs of currant, sour cherry, and white pepper. Palate showed lots of sour cherry, but seemed thin on the mid-palate. Medium finish.

Basic red table wine in my opinion.
1st Monastrell grape experience to my knowledge.
Dried cherries on the nose with low minerality, earth, and spice.
Moderate alcohol, tannins and acidity.

Blueberry and pepper nose with midpalate notes of canned cherries and raspberry. It comes on very smooth at first and ends up drying out your toung then wraps up with a short, hot and muted fruit finish. Not bad for $13 but probably not something I would buy again.

Tasted December 4, 2006 at home. Opened and decanted about 30 minutes before serving in a Spiegelau Authentis Magnum glass. Dark garnet color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Tight nose of blackberries, boysenberries, raspberries and maybe a little brown sugar/cinnamon toast at the finish. Flavors of red berries, red cherries, tangy raspberries and maybe some cocoa powder. Light acidity, medium tannins. Seems bit “flat” on the palate early on. Drink over the next 2-3 years. PURPLE noted it seemed a little hot as well. NOTE: PURPLE tasted this wine double blind and guessed it is Spanish.
