3rd of 12, opened an hour then decanted 30 minutes, perfect cork and level, in line with previous bottles, remarkably youthful, underlying tannins well covered by fruit, layered and civilised for Cornas, upside, 15+ years. F+ (18).

Northern Rhone night: Much better than my last bottle a year ago which was too sweet and lacked structure. Showed more similarly to the excellent ‘95 that I had a couple of years ago. Blackberries, some cassis and a wine that unfurled and became more inviting in the glass. So northern Rhone, so Cornas if you know what I mean. In a perfect drinking window.

This is really elegant and approachable now, scents of sandalwood and cherry, tannins are structured but inviting, complex flavors of blackberry, peppercorn, iron and tobacco, very seamless, the palate feels smooth, drinking well now, perfect with a beef soup

Medium light red. Intense floral and red fruit mixed with hints of forest floor and pepper. Dry precise red berry and peppery strawberry flavours and a dry textured elegant finish.

Houston Northern Rhone Blowout: This wine showed the coolness of the vintage and in my opinion was several big steps above the 2007. Not the most powerful Clape at this point, but it has a long life ahead of it. Meaty and masculine, and similar to the 05 Chave but with less weight.

Birthday celebration for C/Y: My contribution. Ripe and slightly sweet for the vintage. Some plum, olives and black pepper-dominant spice and smoky notes. Surprisingly for a Clape this was missing a little structure - the fruit was still very youthful but the tannins seemed rather resolved.

This still seems so young, almost backward. That said, a really pretty nose--heavy on the olives, black fruit, pepper. The palate initially is dominated by coarse tannins, which give a bit of rustic charm. With air, that softens a bit, and it stays expansive across the palate. This still needs another five to ten years, but there's some real promise here.

Hard to believe this was 18 years old. Rustic and briney, with plenty of dark plum fruit. A hint of game, blood, mushrooms/underbrush. Really fantastic stuff that has the stuffing to age for much longer.

1st of 12, decanted an hour, perfect cork and level - dark, dense ruby, little development; dense but attractive bouquet, black fruit and mineral, some garrigue, complex and serious; full, long, persistent, concentrated, nice balance, some unresolved tannins well covered by fruit, grip, significant upside, 15+ years. F+ (18)........Clape showing again how good Cornas can be!!!

Color/App: medium-deep ruby, nearly opaque ruby core -> somewhat diffuse ruby rim with very, very slight bricking; medium+ viscosity. Decanted and let sit in decanter for an hour+ before decanting back into original bottle and taking to dinner. Bouquet of plums and blackberries, leather, roast beef, iodine and earth. Palate showing off the roasted meat element and black fruits, anisette and minerality. While delicious and open for business, I think this still has time in hand . . . certainly 5+ more years. Tannins are still noticeable but not overbearing at all. Great acidity and a long finish with superb balance. If you don't love this then you're just not a fan of Cornas I'd say.

Another beautiful bottle. Complex dark fruits in nose and mouth, smooth texture, medium-weight, excellent intensity and precision, very good length. Tannins pretty much further resolved but the wine should age well for some time, still. Cellared since original release.

This was a delicious Cornas in Clape's post mid-90s style. It was medium/full bodied and harmonious with elements of cherry tinged fruit, metal, grilled meat, balsam, varnish, earthy minerals, leather, velvety texture and moreish acidity all in perfectly seamless balance together with some firmness supporting a quite long finish. Some may complain that this is excessively suave for Cornas typicity but I love it. Excellent.

Sunday hangout (socially distanced) (Chicago, IL): I'm a huge fan of how 2004 Northern Rhônes are drinking right now, and this bottle is another case in point. The nose shows a pronounced brininess with some funky earthy elements as well. The palate has a little animale and comes off with quite a bit of that rustic barnyard thing going on, but for the most part this is quite resolved and ready to go.

As so often happens, in the long run, it is the balanced vintages that provide the great bottles and not the big vintages that early on receive the high scores. Just a perfect bottle with tapenade and dark plum aromas and flavors, medium-weight body, intensity, balance, purity, and penetration. I do not understand the comment that this is a modern style -- Clape has always been the most refined of Cornas producers, but that is not modern; I know his wines back to 1977 and began visiting in 1986, hardly "modern" times. Cellared since original release.

Wow. Pungent nose. Dried griottes (black cherry). Excellent acidity balances rich fruit and ripe tannins. Great length and complexity. Perhaps the finish is very slightly muddy? Clearly fully mature with some secondaries coming in at the end — smoked tea (earl grey?), mushroom. Wonderful place.

Decanted for an hour Black olives (which are very very pronounced), blood, black fruits, some blueberry, iron, animal sweat Full bodied, extremely high but silky smooth tannins Outstanding length. Lasts for a minute. I would drink this now — it strikes me as being on the tail end of its drinking window and the fruits are dried and subtle and will only become more subtle over time This has the structure to pair nicely with rich, fatty food
(I believe, with the benefit of hindsight, that I decanted it for the right amount of time. However it was drinkable immediately)

MM Tuesday Night Zoom Tasting (Vancouver, BC): Drank along side the 2004 Jamet Cote-Rotie. This was really clamped down at first on the nose but opened after a couple hours in the glass. Very Clape-like, with plenty of cool dark fruits, bacon, olive spice, and some light herbal nuances. Delicious all the way through on the palate with a hint of sweetness on the finish. I was worried about this bottle when first poured but it slowly revealed classic Clape in a vintage that I've really enjoyed. Elegant yet powerful, if that makes any sense. Fantastic

Inky maroon. Heavy sediment. Black currant, menthol and heme, black olive notes. Medium bodied, fruit is sweet yet demure. Plenty of tannins remain. A bit angular by itself but tasty with some fatty beef.

Single blind with 6 other 04 northern Rhônes, and the reveal was a shock. Probably the sappiest and biggest of the 7 wines, and something I’d have maybe expected from an 06. Somewhat Disjointed and not ready. Not a bad wine, but in this lineup wasn’t on par.

Despite being 15 years old, this Cornas is still showing good acidity and balance. I have to say that the wine was probably better just opened than when we drank it five hours later, but still I did not spot any sign of the time.

(Noble Rot) I had mixed impressions from this wine, which -- while from an impeccable bottle -- surely suffered from following two very acidity-driven, elegant wines (Ulysse Colin champagne and 1985 Talbot). At first (PnP) it struck me as elegant and balanced, with moderate complexity, and the characteristics of a cooler Northern Rhone vintage (which I prefer) -- not too jammy or hot, blackberry notes, a bit (not much) of leather/tar/meat. As the bottle warmed and opened, it built significantly and became somewhat chunky, bigger, and seemed to lack acidity.

Clape Vertical (Table, Donkey & Stick - Chicago, IL): Group liked this more than me. I found it to be charming with a modest amount of N. Rhone complexity. The fruit was quite forward and easy drinking. A solid vintage.

Case of the Clape (Chicago, IL): One of the favourites tonight. I've loved where the 2004s have been in the last few years, and this bottle is no exception. The nose here is resolved, with a nice balance of primary fruit and some maturing characteristics. The most prominent attribute here is the silkiness -- it's a wine with the tannins so perfectly resolved and in balance with the structure. On the lighter side for sure, but absolutely fantastic to drink now.

Rhone May Dinner (Bobo): Lavender jumps out of the glass. Black fruits too. There's this very refined sweet note somewhere in the wine that surprised me. Tasty. At times I think '04 gets a bad rap in the Rhone - the wines seem to be drinking quite nicely these days.

Red, quite deep, not showing much development in the glass
Nose was vrey medicinal at the start, but this cleared up and uncovered a nice berry fruit and some black olives as well as spice (black pepper).
Good balnce in the mouth, with good concentration and length. Smooth tannins. Will last som eyears, but not sure it will improve further from cellaring.
Not the most powerful cornas I've had, but certainly a nice companion to new years eve raindeer.

This is probably at the far end of what I can tolerate in terms of rusticity in syrah. The nose is a little meaty, and doesn't show too much fruit. Instead, there are some tart elements, a hint of smoke and blood, some rust and olive as well. The palate is somewhat angular, with an almost unbelievable amount of tannin for its age. I have a bit of concern as to whether the remaining fruit will outlive the structure (the answer is probably not), but right now, this is hitting the spot. (I'll add that the addition of food makes this a much more viscerally enjoyable wine.)

A run of disappointing bottles, after a couple of more stellar ones. The last 2 or 3 all a bit generic, neither old nor young, just pedestrian. it's a decent wine, but no excitement or interest, a little hard on the finish, a little shallow on the bouquet and palate. I think this may just be getting a bit tired, as 2004 was not an exceptional vintage.

Medium deep to deep maroon - nice whiff of saddle leather on the nose - plum, blackcurrant, bramble and sweet pipe tobacco - palate is bright, juicy, nice acidity, a bit of tannin still - black fruits, tobacco, leather - even some earthy, tapenade notes - really quite delish. Recognizably Euro, we haven't had a good N Rhone for a while, and my initial reaction was "Aaah" - elegance, sense of place - very nice. No rush.

Tuesday Night Double Blind $40+ (Bin 75 Alpharetta, GA): Opaque core with cloudy maroon violet rim; violets, plums, juicy, green note, stone, mineral, meaty, hints at olive, almost smoky; more age showing on palate, complex, herbs, sweeter purple fruit, pepper, green herbs, green pepper, Syrah, a certain coolness to the fruit, old- school styling; very nice; called '05 Clusel Roch, thought biodynamic somewhat rustic Cote Rotie, this bottle was still quite youthful with more upside potential.

This needed a couple of hours in the decanter. It's chthonic, with blood and iodine flavors dominating over classic syrah fruit. Not quite mature, and finishes with a structured but not overt framing. It's not flashy, but I like this a lot and expect it will only get better.

Lovely bright red. Charming scents of strawberry and horse-sweat. Elegant palate, lifted with acid and poised. Great Cornas fruit and funk. Not amazingly deep or rich, but really, really classy. Much enjoyed, and rather put to shame a brash Australian Shiraz sharing the table, which would otherwise have seemed very good. Ready to drink. 93

Rich red black, broad rim. Crushed herb, mustard seed, ink, dark plums and currants, plenty of peppery spice. Silky smooth, fleshy, finishing soft with powdery tannins. Feels fully mature, broadened, lost some focus. Flavours are delicious though, raspberry and black currants, hints of dark spice, tar and liquorice with a floral blueberry inky edge. Drinking well, not for keeping too long.

At home over soy sauce chicken and cheese - really enjoyable. It took just a little time in the bottle to open up, but this was just about singing at 13 years of age. This had a really pretty, attractive nose, with drifts of red cherries and darker blue and blackberries laced with lifted tones of menthol, cola and flowery wild herb aromas, all this tied together with a minerally, stony earth undertow. Very Rhone. The palate was showing beautifully, with plush notes of dark cherries and blackberries woven with velvety tannins and lovely balancing acidity, all clean, focused and balanced, yet somehow still preserving the rustic charm of Cornas, with a nicely savoury counterpoint that reminded me of olive tapenade. Nice finish too, midlengthed, but delicious, with a smooth glide of black fruit, sweet spice and woodier tones of dried grapes on the branch gracing the backpalate. A lovely little wine, drinking deliciously right now.

Medium-lighter depth, medium dark, showing some development, bit of mushroom, good acidity. Perhaps a bit farther along in development than I'd prefer for a decade old Cornas, drinking well now and will likely continue to improve for quite a few years.

Fully mature, harmonius nose with dried fruit, black olives, bay leaves and a nice depth of plum pudding. Spicy and sligtly meaty. Very attractive. Fullish body, melted tannins. Elegant and balanced. Still fruity freshness left, but aromatically more of dried fruit. Good length and nice grip. In a perfect spot.

Expressive and remarkable fragrance of black olives, meat, crowberries, and something balsamic and dark, like shoe cream, gives way to succulent and sappy taste, almost thick and fat, fine length and licorice on the finish. Very special and fine. Drinks very well now.

Tasted in response to the NYTimes article about Cornas, along with the suggested eggplant parm recipe. Great combo! But it is about the wine. Smoked meat for sure, but chocolate powder and cheeries, too. Real syrah! As noted in a previous note, some greenness, but only a touch. The tannins were nearly resolved, it was just delicious and suave. Will keep my lone magnum for afew more years. I detected a hint of Double Bubble spiciness.

A little reticent upon first opening, but after an hour this really blossomed. Sappy red & dark fruits, spicy herbs, leather and some green stalkiness. Medium weight, a little lean even. Earthy and rustic, classic Cornas. To my palate, 04 N. Rhone's are drinking fantastically right now, but also have the structure to continue to improve.

Cornas tasting @ Jeroboam Club (Bristol): First thing to note is how dark this wine is even compared to some of the younger wines on show tonight. Very prominent nose with black fruits, almost a pastille component. Uber complex with a myriad of layered fruit. Plenty of verve and vitality, great balance, really enjoyable to drink at this point. Will clearly age, so certainly one to keep an eye on.

Had the 1998 and 2004 together. Both were lovely but naturally the 1998 had more mature notes of game and barnyard on the nose. Both were really fresh and could have lived for many more years. The 1998 was more supple and complete than the 2004.

I love good Cornas and this bottle is nice but not great. And definitely, with a little decanting, ready to drink. Tasted right out of the bottle and then every 15 minutes until consumed 1 1/2 hour after. The violent Briary alcohol and fruit at first gave way to a more domiciled dark Berry/ leather/ earthy( moss) taste but almost too soft and lacking the precise definition of,for example, an Allemande.

New Yorkers welcome Morgan Clendenen to town with wine and ducks. (Peking Duck House- Midtown): Rather tightfisted at present and loathe to give up too many secrets, but one sees hints of a beautiful future as there's depth and balance to the wine, excellent concentration to the blueberry and black currant fruit and game, spice and garrigue adding complexity. Powerfully built, but not at all overdone, this is going to be fun to watch evolve over the years and I think it will be better than it is today, but it's a bit unyielding now. Solid A-.

This wine was obviously young but it was not shut down. Slow ox for several hours and a couple hours in decanter brought out a lovely nose of dark fruit, spice, olives and the hint of animal. The structure was still imposing on the palate but with food it was tremendous. Clape's wines seem to have the ideal "old school" touch while still retaining a fruit component to appease a more modern palate. The acidity was perfect, giving a lively freshness to the finish. Earth, iron and more olive drove home the finish. This wine is clearly in its youth but can still be enjoyed. **Note: this bottle was consumed after being in a malfunctioned wine fridge that started to heat causing the bottle to leak. I was expecting more heat flaw but none was overtly present. Guess it just shows how resilient syrah can be.**

Decanted and poured, this wine showed well but seemed to lack the overall components to give a more compelling impression. The aromatics show dark fruits, leather, tar, black and green olive and floral notes. The color is a dark ruby to almost purple that shows some maturing. The medium/full bodied palate shows good balance and length with tannins and acidity present on the finish. Mature notes linger in the background on both the palate and bouquet. This drink well and is probably at or around its peak. It should continue to drink well for many years.

For those who are interested: Please let the wine rest till 2015. It's too young and a little closed at the moment. There is coffee on the nose and spices like thyme. Lots of tannins, berries and cherries and some metal notes. Good wine but will improve with bottle rest.

Decanted for two hours. Clear, dark red with a garnet rim, some sediment and tartaric crystals. The nose is already exciting and quite elegant with gamy aromas, olives, iron, floral notes and soft red fruit. Clape Cornas Vertical (RN74, San Francisco): Striking nose of mentholated meat. But the flavors are tight and close to the vest - more so than the younger vintages - probably constrained by acid. For two hours after opening, remains hugely fragrant yet lean in the mouth. For now, serve with food (the duck worked well).

Jeez, I don't know how much more textbook you could expect a Cornas to be, or how enjoyable/exciting at this young stage. And it's young by several years, to the point where upon opening the tannins creep up your jawline like a boa constrictor. Blackberry, bacon, graphite, pepper, all wrapped up like an appetizer on a toothpick, meaning that you're only getting teased by what's to come when this has a chance to settle in. If I drank this vintage tomorrow with a charred steak I'd probably love it, but it will reward several years of cellaring even more. If you just can't wait, at least give it a good two hours in a decanter. As Carol King might say, "It's so far away" from conventional New World notions of syrah.

Boys night with a few bottles of Cornas and other treats. (Reno, NV): One of the better wines of the night, very young with a very strong aromatic presence… a very deep core of red and dark fruits with a very floral and pretty aspect… good meat and dense spice aromas, little of that tobacco leaf/green note. On the palate a texturally beautiful wine that has good acidity, a midpalate with plenty of depth, and a moderately firm and tannic finish. This is going to be a great Clape one day… “outstanding.”

First experience of a Cornas: and sampled alongside some Syrah offerings from the might McLaren Vale and Barossa: a contrast in styles if ever there was one: the new world all fruit forward and jammy, the Cornas dense and terroir conscious. Smoked meats and animal are descriptors that apply well here. Earthy, bold, dense and muscular, youthful and will improve with age as the components resolve themselves. All good but the price tag was $89, so it really ought to be very good.

APFW tasting. A lot tamer than I would have expected, but I enjoyed this quite a bit. Dark cherries and berres, herb and spice on the nose with some flower and anise. A surprisingly gentle palate for a Cornas which had smooth velvety finish. Thick and sweetish with lots of dark fruit and hints of herb, and a good long finish with impressve complexity. Like the last poster, I was surprised by the elegance that this wine had.

Fairly dark but not dense. Nice mix of blackberry, herbs, evergreen, and just the faintest hint of earthiness on the nose. Not as aggressively tannic on the attack as I expected, medium weight, and with youthful structure at this point. This is positively civilized and polished (dare I say elegant?) for Cornas.

Decanted for an hour
Black olives (which are very very pronounced), blood, black fruits, some blueberry, iron, animal sweat
Full bodied, extremely high but silky smooth tannins
Outstanding length. Lasts for a minute.
I would drink this now — it strikes me as being on the tail end of its drinking window and the fruits are dried and subtle and will only become more subtle over time
This has the structure to pair nicely with rich, fatty food
(I believe, with the benefit of hindsight, that I decanted it for the right amount of time. However it was drinkable immediately)

Fantastic

No rush.

The medium/full bodied palate shows good balance and length with tannins and acidity present on the finish. Mature notes linger in the background on both the palate and bouquet. This drink well and is probably at or around its peak. It should continue to drink well for many years.

Dark res/black. A very nice rounded Syrah nose. Nice red fruit flavours and some soft tannin. Very good.

Great cornas. Deep fruits, and some slight meaty aromas. Well balanced. I agree with others on the 'elegance' issue.

Saturday Tasting Group (Knightsbridge Wine Shop (Northbrook, IL)): Dark ruby color. A little cloudy. Very nice.
Rich spicy fruit. Raspberries, smoked meat, rich and smokey overall.
Moderate alcohol and acidity with nice tannin backbone. Roasted nuts, mocha and molasses on the palate.
Solid young offering. Shows more fruit (I'm told) than past Clape Cornas.

Very clean Clape Cornas. Dark, spicy blackberry fruits with some bramble elements. Firm. Medium bodied. Very nice young wine.

decanted, well perfumed with a bouquet of smoky meat, flower, and fresh soil that carries through to the palate, full flavored but light in the mouth, complete with balance, matched well with herbed meat sauce, but I could imagine this to go well with various meats, very hard to put down, absolutely enjoyable

Lighter body than expected, with dark, floral flavors and an exotic spice component. Very young, and rather elegant styling for a Clape Cornas. Very good.

Dekanteret 2 timer på Barolo karaffel. Smag sammen med Dom. du Banneret 2004.
Farve: dybrød, mørk og tæt.
duft: umiddelbare lækre noter af brombær og blåbær, herefter peber og animalske toner. Meget lovende.
Smag: kraftig, men god balance. God frugt - tanniner ikke så fremtrædende som forventet, måske pga. den sødmefulde frugt.
God eftersmag 35-40 sek.
På 2. dagen stadig storform. Faktisk mindre animalsk, men stadig tæt og mørk. Fremragende glas vin.

Quite typical Cornas with intense aromas and harsh tannins. Definitely too young at the moment and didn't decant. Does it have the fruit to last several years? I'm not sure.

2007 France Trip - Hauts Chassis, Duclaux, Dumaine, Clape (Northern Rhone): Sappy red cherry fruit, olives, and baking spices. High-toned and elegant. Good structure; young and very tannic. Excellent, though not quite up to the level of the 2005.

Tasted at the domaine. Bottled 3 days prior. Compared to the 2004 Renaissance (see TN), deeper, more brooding aromas of smoked meat, dark fruit, spice. In the mouth, good mineral core, baking spices, red / black fruit. Good acidity. Very impressive.
