Reports of this wine’s demise are greatly exaggerated. I found this on a shelf in a liquor store in Fells Point. The quality is frankly stunning.
Raspberry, sour cherry, leather, butter, must, plum on the nose.
Palate is just darn perfect. Blueberry, red currant, leathery, earthy goodness. Provides lively acidity that gives the wine a great sense of youth. Extremely balanced and, at 13.3% ABV, reinforces my yearning for the old days of Napa.

I was gifted this wine more than 20 years ago by a good friend at a top restaurant in DFW. I didn't store it properly and was 90% sure it was ruined because of how poorly I treated it. We opened it tonight for Christmas Eve Eve (my made up holiday with family) and the cork was actually wet on the outside. It was pushed into the neck of the bottle about 1/2" despite the capsule being fully in tact. I just knew it was ruined! I managed to get juice to flow with a filter (the sediment almost choked it off completely) and was apprehensive that the nose wasn't repulsive. A sip later, the wine was desperate for fruit but completely drinkable as a nearly 30 year old example of Ed's best work at Beringer. I let a glass sit for several minutes exposed to the atmosphere only to see the brilliant flavors evaporate into oblivion as this old girl died in the glass. Her secrets remained encapsulated in the bottle--I'm so glad I didn't decant it. We enjoyed this wine for several hours. Those that like that musty, old, raisin flavor of a big Napa Cab will enjoy this wine. I'm sure the availability even in a private wine cellar is fleeting but it's still showing extremely well. Merry Christmas and if you have this on hand, enjoy it this holiday season with the ones you love the most. Merry Christmas!

Opened, and poured into a decanter. Cork was crumbled so filtered the wine as it was poured. Still a dark color. Nose of eucalyptus and plums. Elegant, with flavor of red cherries, some basil and mint notes, and round and smooth tannins. Still has life left. Well done, although not outstanding.

Not decanted. Still tannic upon opening (cork in perfect condition unlike some other reviews), and tannins didn't fade for hours. Tawny in color, starting to turn raisiny. Somewhat oily appearance on side of glass. Silky smooth mouthfeel. Fruit still present, but not at all pronounced. Cedar bark, leather, cigar, with a slight overbaked cherry pie taste. Perhaps dried fig, molasses. After a couple of hours . . . a bit of a creosote hint which was not pleasant. Second day taste after preservation of 1/4 bottle -- the same. Tannins still exploding from the glass, but fading a bit more quickly. Molasses flavor and aroma a bit more pronounced second day, while cedar bark less pronounced. I don't know how much more time this vintage will last before fading completely. Purchased a few years ago directly from Beringer.

Beautiful perfumy nose of herbal cherry, soft leather, incense; silky entry, excellent depth of flavor, a bit low on tannins, but elegant with good tangy acidity and a long finish. Complex, lovely character, and decent structure, although a little light. Drink now while still a bit of tannins left.

Discovered this wine was still in the cellar, surprise. Cork was very wet, but no musty smell. Color was starting to turn. Very smooth, tannins completely gone. Complexity also gone. Not much fruit left. Not bad considering, but wish we would have opened this 8 years ago.

This is past it's prime. It wasn't dried out, though. Brick rim and it was in balance. I bought this from JJ buckley and the cork was sopping wet - badly stored? Who knows.
The wine was was all there just in complete decline. Leather, no fruit, weak structure. We had the 93 BPR next and it was wow.

Decanted for 1 hour. Sour cherry aromas combine with leather flavors and integrated tannins. Fruity mid-palate with a smooth lingering finish. Good acidity. Past its prime, but I was pleasantly surprised how well this bottle held up.

Brought to a cab & steak dinner fest at woodward cellar's house. We opened and drank along with the 2004 St. Clement Cabernet Sauvignon from Armstrong Ranch and a Cameron Hughes Lot 116. This wine was poured directly from the bottle.
On the nose it was still strong but taste wise it was definitely past it's prime. Still a solid cab. The tannins and fruit have settled with age but it still was a nice complement to the steak dinner mr and mrs woodward cellar prepared. For the record, the St. Clement dominated.

Bought just one bottle of this at Helsinki airport duty free 15 years ago, cellared till my son's 21st birthday- which was today. Decanted, and was surprised to see only a hint of brick at the edge. Nice inviting dried cherry and a bit of earth in the nose, First sip showed the wine was mature, and nicely balanced, tho the acidity was prominent. Wow, this was so expansive and complex over the next hour- acidity receded, the mouthfeel was velvety like the best pinots I've had. Obviously a deep concentrated wine in it's youth, the years had mellowed this into a graceful, elegant and impressive teeth stainer. My son plans to do a similar meal for his kids when they turn drinking age.

Eevn though this wine is past its maturity point, it still impresses me. Very well balanced with flavors of curant, black cherry and a leathery/smokey finish. This was the 3rd bottle consumed since New Years Eve '09. This first one was decanted and we realized it didn't need to be. The next 2, including this one were right from the bottle at cellar temp.

Trip to Napa/Sonoma; 11/7/2009-11/14/2009 (Napa/Sonoma): Bricking and slightly orange color. Aromatic nose of stewed fruits and tobacco. Palate still quite acidic, but integrated tannin. Sour cherry note is predominant on the palate. Dry mineral finish. Pleasant, but seems to be losing fruit, not terribly complex. Past peak and tired.

Sonoma-Napa Trip Day 4 and 5; 6/29/2009-6/30/2009 (Napa and Sonoma): 13.3% ABV. Purchased at the winery the day prior. Cork shows a little seepage, but not all the way up. Deep color. Almost opaque with 1/3 inch clearing at the rim. Dark cedar red currant nose. Medium-bodied and somewhat Bordeaux like. Touch of earthy meaty and a little green bell pepper. Fun to taste, but I generally prefer my California cabs a little younger. I wonder what this wine was like when it was young.

20 year old Napa cabernet...still a dark maroon color, going clear at the rim. Nose of raspberries, with a sweet floral component. Sweet raspberry on the palate, with some spices, but very mute. The complexity of this wine is gone, definitely past its peak, but still VERY enjoyable. Sweet fruit is evident, but the usual complexity and depth usually found in Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is not present in this wine. Drink up!

This was the only year Merlot was ever added to the Private Reserve. This bottle was very tannic yet mild, palate was slightly smokey with red currant and other dark fruit. Color was a rich, red brick...once the wine sat in the glass for about 20 minutes, a hint of anise emerged.

1989 Beringer Private Reserve Cabernet – This was a neat wine to serve after the Pichon. Of course, 1989 was not a strong vintage in Napa, but the wine was yummy none the less. On the nose, a similar level of maturity and varietal character to the Pichon, but in a less minty and more broad (or warm) way. In the mouth – a tad monolithic, but has wonderful cabernet character and a rich thick mouth feel. Nice and long – I think this wine is doing pretty well and shows potential to age futher.

Deep color, holding up well. Many fruits come forward. (Each reviewer has his/her own version of them.) Very complex. Blended wonderfully.
Perfect for that special occasion.
