A hauntingly good wine with perfect (ok, amazing is more like it) color/freshness. This is the type of experience that stays with me for months if not years. Rich, golden straw with a hint of green on the meniscus (still!). The nose is like a very large thing crammed down into the glass, swelling with butter toffee, cream(sicle), lemon confit, a subtle herbal note, and a powerful, almost smokey steel-foundry minerality — heady stuff, just this side of hot. The palate is dense with the glycerin of the vintage, of crystalline purity etched in filigree acidity, and fills every bit of one’s mouth with sumptuous balance, restating the flavor profile of the nose. Briefly, I even called this “hard,” as it was so youthful, but that mellowed. The wine is exactly à point, youthful and fresh yet mellowed, suave, and expansive. The finish lingers like a new lover. There is certainly oak present but it has integrated with effortless finesse. Spectacular wine, of grand cru quality if anything short of Chevalier-Montrachet can be. It’s been a long time since I’ve had a white Burgundy this good. (Thanks, Seth!)

My bottle. Classic and pristine. Luscious and foreword nose. Rich with some lemon and butterscotch - not ox, just age and it's somewhat sweet and rich. Some oak. White florals. Matt says cream creamsicle and steel shavings. Rich and balanced on palate. Cream. Lemon. Lots of minerals. Long wide lemon and some green finish w sweet oak. Just lovely.
2 hours later. Palate and finish are off the charts. Minerals And green and a bit of pale. Long and perfect.

This wine really wowed on open. Didn't look or taste a day older than a 2012. Certainly not a 2002. Very tart and acidic at first but quickly came around for a while. Showed well next to a 1996 Bernard Morey Chassagne Caillerets(although this beat it out in the end as my white of the night). It did fade back to being a little too tart at the end of the night but its highs were great. 95 at peak, 92-93 otherwise.

Henri Boillot Clos de la Mouchère Vertical with Bonus Bottles (My home - Chicago IL): Wow, the best bottle of this wine I've ever had. Plenty of earth and some black truffle, but still so much mature and fresh orchard fruit with floral and spice hints. Clearly ripe, but enough brightening acidity, finishing with a long, minerally finish.

Last bottle. The best Mouchere I’ve ever had (and I have had many going back to the ‘86). At peak. Florals and ripe pit fruit on the nose. Very ripe and rich palate without being clumsy. Great balance. Just yum. I would drink up over the next year if I had more. A great example of what white burg can be when not poxed.

How often is an 18-year old Puligny Montrachet premier cru this close to perfect? Not quite great, just wonderful, and astonishingly youthful. In a blind tasting, I would have guessed its age as 7-10 years. Will the wonders of white Burgundy ever cease?

This was good but I thought it was over-extracted, a bit of oak in there, and a touch too ripe with papaya and tropical notes, and maybe it was a little high in alcohol as well. Guessed new world-style producer on this one. Still liked it though. Cannot believe this is 2002. Dirty Dozen at Grand Harbor.

What a stunningly good wine. A billowy, flowery, unctuous wine. Pinpoint balance, at the same time creamy and laser-like. White flowers, pear, long finish. Really lovely.

I was a bit concerned on seeing an impressive amount of mouldy cork under the capsule and that the cork was moistened across it's length. A quick sip allayed my doubts though and when we got to this an hour later it was singing. Medium to dark yellow and ever so slightly viscous on the pour. Flint, toasted oak and ripe lemons on the nose. Brisk attack, fanning out to a full bodied, exquisitely balanced amalgam of ripe orchard fruits, white flower notes, a mineral acidic spine, and deft use of oak adding a wonderful toasty spice top note.
Really sublime. I would love to have had this in amongst a flight of '02 Grand Crus as I am quite sure it would have outshone a number of them. A producer and bottling to look out for and purchase in long lived vintages. Let it sleep for 15 years and enjoy the magic of white Burgundy.

When it's right and this bottle was perfect, Boillot's PM Clos de la Mouchere is a magnificent white burgundy. A brilliant nose of orchard fruit, nuts and butter precede a palate staining heavenly mouth feel that leads to a never ending finish. Wow is not enough of a reaction. This is the wine you go through all the premixed bottles for. This is as good as a premier cru can get.

Fully mature, medium/full bodied, with a soft, silky charm, the butterscotch, fresh apples, sweet lemon peel, pear and hazelnut character was in full force. Balance and freshness, with loads of fruit going on. No premox here, this was a pleasure to taste.

Served blind. Very crisp, excellent acidity. Austere in terms of fruit. Almost as good as the Charmes though hard to distinguish between the two blind. Preferred it over the Batard. Opened up some more with time. This has room for improvement.

Deep, elegant, still fresh nose. Complex with tantalizing notes of roasted hazelnuts, gun-powder, stony minerals and pure apple and pear fruits. Very balanced. Fullish, austere body with tremendous fruit and concentration. Elegance and perfect acidic grip. Citrus, fresh yellow apple, roasted hazelnuts, gently oaky. A splendid balancing act of full body, austerity, nuttiness and a long minerally finish. Exactly as a white burg should appear. This is competing with GC-level Batard from weaker producers. It is hazardous to wait more than 10 years with white Burgs, but what a reward when avoiding the Premox trap! Perfect right now.

Drank at Cape Cod, along with a 2005 Kongsgaard. Pretty & very bright yellow strawlike color. Nose of citrus, perhaps some nutmeg, but I picked up no oak. On the palate, fresh and crisp, with lovely acidity and nicely integrated fruit. Very nice mineral quality too. The wine is drinking great right now, the fruit is not overripe and all elements in a great spot & meshing beautifully. That's not to say the wine has peaked though. I believe it still has a few years left on it. Very enjoyable bottle

Fairly oaky and straightforward, but on point and delicious. Wonderful acidity to complement the buttery, perfectly ripe white fruit, yet doesn't have the character, depth or length to take it to the next level. No hint of premox, which gets points these days. How messed up is that? Lovely.

I brought this to dinner at Torrisi Italian Specialties. Medium straw color. Nose of lemon (lime) a touch of spice - nutmeg. Sweet oak, butterscotch and caramel. Enters with killer lemon and acid, lots of spice and spicy oak. Great mouthfeel - really driven and lively. Lots of acid, lift and spice. Minerals. Same lemon spice finish. The palate on this wine is just superb - it's got a lot of flavor, but is light on its feet. Nose - 4.5/6, Palate - 5.5/6, Finish - 5.5/6, Je Ne Sais Quoi - 1.5/2 = 17/20.

Reading reviews of the 2002 (only 1 here before mine) I was concerned the wine might be past its peak. RP has it as mature, though not old. RP is right on target with this wine. Very intense, but well refined Puligny-Montrachet. Had great aromatic depth to its spiced mineral-scented nose. Medium-bodied, filled with quartz, lemon, and crisp pears. It showed great Burg character such that you knew this wine could only have come from Burgundy. Liked it a lot and I'm glad I have another few, though I won't wait much longer to drink them

Tight but subtle nose - spice, minerals, citrus fruit, toasty oak, flowers,-freshness, vibrancy, density, texture, and complexity. - terrific acidity. The spicy character is particularly attractive and the influence of oak becomes more obvious as the wine opens in the glass. All components are in perfect balance. Long, elegant finish. stored at 50 degree F with ZERO premox evident...this could easily go another 15 or 20 years..no problem

With a lot of upside. IMHO, this is way too young. Summer fruits and flowers, burried in acid. If I had another, I would hold at least until 2012, or longer. I have very limited experience with white burgs, or burgs in general for that matter, but, for the moment, 10 years in my mantra for whites. I had two 99 whites this year, and thety are the two best ever. One was a BDM CC, the other 1999 J.M. Boillot Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Combettes.

After some disappointing '02s from other growers, this is a more than pleasant surprise
Colour: light green-gold. Looks very young
Nose: summer flowers, citrus and yellow fruit and talcum powder. More than a passing resemblance to a Donnhof Hermannshohle Spatlese. There's also a faint fresh mint aroma which is very attractive
Palate: immensely refreshing and clean. A bit saline, with a wave of minerals in the background. White peaches and slight touch of honey (the only give away that this is 7 years old).
What a wonderful wine. A great way to convert a die hard riesling fanatic to the delights of White Burgundy. The antithesis of the fruit/ oak bombs masquerading as chardonnay nowadays. Buy more ! This will last for a long time.

An evening of Barolos ((K)new, Chicago IL): nose: pretty and higher toned nose then the first blind white. Succulent tones of meyer lemons, lemon curd, white fruits, mineral tones, and a touch of tropical citrus'. Real good depth, and comes off as more linear and focused then the first wine
taste: Excellent depth with a real good medium feel and medium acidity with tones of lemon curd, white fruits, mineral tones and some tropical citrus tones. The feel is nice and round right now, and the acidity isn't as big as I would expect such a young puligny to be
overall: Comes off as fully ready to drink. The acidity is in a good place right now, so it may be time to drink up so as not to risk premox. To me this acted more like a california chard that was aiming for a more burgundian style rather then a straight puligny

Lovely nose of sea and lemon. Flavors starting out as focused lemon mineral with white-flowers continuing with a complex mid-palate of smoke, hazelnut, oak, and mineral, on to a mineral lemony long finish. a lovely wine that may not be seamless or silky, but has excellent complexity, concentration, and length. Very enjoyable. I found I enjoyed it slightly cooler than my normal cellar temp preference for white burgs.

Started off beautifully pure with nose of lemons, smoke and beautiful minerality. In the mouth a completely balanced wine with piercing precision and a lingering finish. Unfortunately, this wine didn't last long in the glass--perhaps 45 minutes prior to tasting caramelized and just not that good. An unusual variant of pre-mature oxidation, certainly.

Merlot-based wines and Sauvignon Blanc at Lola (Lola, Dallas): Blind White 3 - cereal nose with a touch of toasted nuts. Expressive hazelnut pear white fruit palate turning a little tight/oaky/acidic(?) late in the finish. Touch mineral and saline. Very nice. Good complexity.

I've had quite a numbers of Boillot in 2009. All of them were stunning and really give you a Wow. A little close in the beginning and some of my friends who have more experience in white burgs was suspecting the premox. Then with some air the wine tended to expand... This 1er cru offers such a complex, mineral, peanuts, elegance yet full in mouth. Most of Boillot I've had has been nothing but great. Can't wait to try his higher tier stuff!!!

Beginning of the Month Burgundies (Chez Panisse Cafe, Berkeley): Light yellow. Strong reductive tones dominate the nose, but there is plenty of wine underneath. Medium to full bodied with round, low acid, harmonious mouth feel and long finish. Some wood is present, but it discreetly gives shape without being intrusive. Impressive in these respects, but it seems fully resolved, completely ready to go, and somewhat lacking in complexity. Steve Tanzer might call this one "blurry". I'm still waiting to try my "Aha!" wine from Puligny, a commune I just don't understand. Drink up.

2002 Jean Boillot & Fils Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos de la Mouchère . This wine is done is a very ripe, opulent style and is excellent for what it is. No signs of oxidation the wine has toasty oak, baking spices and white fruit on the nose. The palate follows the nose with gobs of ripe, round fruit in the middle and a long finish. I would prefer more tension and spine as this wine drinks more like a Mersault to my palate. Still, a great wind for the money.

Light straw color. Somewhat reticent nose of fresh pears and white flowers, with a trace of smoke. Palate intially shows peach pit and some butteriness; but very juicy, with firm acid. The oak is very nicely integrated. Quite tightly structured, though it opens up quite nicely; but really needs a couple of years (at least) to develop.

Clearly I've opened this too early. It shows promise--especially in the form of some elegant, reserved oak tinges on the nose--but because it's still so youthful, it’s too harshly acidic on the palate, where there are shrill, sour citrus notes. "Beaunehead" 's review gives me hope that another visit to this wine will pay off in a few years' time. As for now, I can't confidently say much more about it or give it a precise numerical rating.

Tasted this while in Beaune at Henri Boillot's winery. While all of his 2002s are incredible, and much better than the 2001s (which are very good, but didn't blow me away for the prices), this stood out as one of the very best wines, while still being affordable. The only wines I rate higher are the Corton Charlemagne, and the Puligny Les Pucelles, both of which are bigger and more forward. My notes are: "From 62 year old vines, the vineyard is located within Les Perrieres, and only 4 ha in size. Very spicy nose - exotic, anise, and warm vanilla pudding. Very sexy. Much leaner than the Corton-Charlemagne, with high acidity, well balanced by the fruit. Very long, rich, ripe baked pear finish."

Fully mature, medium/full bodied, with a soft, silky charm, the butterscotch, fresh apples, sweet lemon peel, pear and hazelnut character was in full force. Balance and freshness, with loads of fruit going on. No premox here, this was a pleasure to taste.

Balanced, mid-weight Burg, with a light, citrus fruit profile and still-prominent but unobtrusive oak aromas and flavors. Good depth and a silky mouthfeel make this a very pleasant, if not especially memorable, companion to a seafood dinner.

Deep, elegant, still fresh nose. Complex with tantalizing notes of roasted hazelnuts, gun-powder, stony minerals and pure apple and pear fruits. Very balanced.
Fullish, austere body with tremendous fruit and concentration. Elegance and perfect acidic grip. Citrus, fresh yellow apple, roasted hazelnuts, gently oaky. A splendid balancing act of full body, austerity, nuttiness and a long minerally finish. Exactly as a white burg should appear. This is competing with GC-level Batard from weaker producers.
It is hazardous to wait more than 10 years with white Burgs, but what a reward when avoiding the Premox trap! Perfect right now.

Drank at Cape Cod, along with a 2005 Kongsgaard. Pretty & very bright yellow strawlike color. Nose of citrus, perhaps some nutmeg, but I picked up no oak. On the palate, fresh and crisp, with lovely acidity and nicely integrated fruit. Very nice mineral quality too. The wine is drinking great right now, the fruit is not overripe and all elements in a great spot & meshing beautifully. That's not to say the wine has peaked though. I believe it still has a few years left on it. Very enjoyable bottle

I brought this to dinner at Torrisi Italian Specialties. Medium straw color. Nose of lemon (lime) a touch of spice - nutmeg. Sweet oak, butterscotch and caramel. Enters with killer lemon and acid, lots of spice and spicy oak. Great mouthfeel - really driven and lively. Lots of acid, lift and spice. Minerals. Same lemon spice finish. The palate on this wine is just superb - it's got a lot of flavor, but is light on its feet. Nose - 4.5/6, Palate - 5.5/6, Finish - 5.5/6, Je Ne Sais Quoi - 1.5/2 = 17/20.

Reading reviews of the 2002 (only 1 here before mine) I was concerned the wine might be past its peak. RP has it as mature, though not old. RP is right on target with this wine. Very intense, but well refined Puligny-Montrachet. Had great aromatic depth to its spiced mineral-scented nose. Medium-bodied, filled with quartz, lemon, and crisp pears. It showed great Burg character such that you knew this wine could only have come from Burgundy. Liked it a lot and I'm glad I have another few, though I won't wait much longer to drink them

With a lot of upside. IMHO, this is way too young. Summer fruits and flowers, burried in acid. If I had another, I would hold at least until 2012, or longer. I have very limited experience with white burgs, or burgs in general for that matter, but, for the moment, 10 years in my mantra for whites. I had two 99 whites this year, and thety are the two best ever. One was a BDM CC, the other 1999 J.M. Boillot Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Combettes.

Lovely nose of sea and lemon. Flavors starting out as focused lemon mineral with white-flowers continuing with a complex mid-palate of smoke, hazelnut, oak, and mineral, on to a mineral lemony long finish. a lovely wine that may not be seamless or silky, but has excellent complexity, concentration, and length. Very enjoyable. I found I enjoyed it slightly cooler than my normal cellar temp preference for white burgs.

A little close in the beginning and some of my friends who have more experience in white burgs was suspecting the premox. Then with some air the wine tended to expand...
This 1er cru offers such a complex, mineral, peanuts, elegance yet full in mouth. Most of Boillot I've had has been nothing but great. Can't wait to try his higher tier stuff!!!

2002 Jean Boillot & Fils Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos de la Mouchère . This wine is done is a very ripe, opulent style and is excellent for what it is. No signs of oxidation the wine has toasty oak, baking spices and white fruit on the nose. The palate follows the nose with gobs of ripe, round fruit in the middle and a long finish. I would prefer more tension and spine as this wine drinks more like a Mersault to my palate. Still, a great wind for the money.

Tasted this while in Beaune at Henri Boillot's winery. While all of his 2002s are incredible, and much better than the 2001s (which are very good, but didn't blow me away for the prices), this stood out as one of the very best wines, while still being affordable. The only wines I rate higher are the Corton Charlemagne, and the Puligny Les Pucelles, both of which are bigger and more forward. My notes are:
"From 62 year old vines, the vineyard is located within Les Perrieres, and only 4 ha in size. Very spicy nose - exotic, anise, and warm vanilla pudding. Very sexy. Much leaner than the Corton-Charlemagne, with high acidity, well balanced by the fruit. Very long, rich, ripe baked pear finish."
