(SYP) Blind tasting. Small glass Flower petal, leaves, red fruits, spices and longans on the nose, cool and mature on the palate with chewy tannins .I thought it was a '95 but had to go with 2004 after being told it is a post-2000 vintage. 90

Phenomenal from first pour. Classic Burgundy balance and finesse. Must be near peak right now. Fruit and mineral and herbs and a touch of funk. Good acidity. Stayed good for hours.
At La Toque.

2004 Hudelot Noellat Romanee St Vivant Grand Cru 2004 Hudelot Noellat Richebourg Grand Cru
I’ve been waiting to drink these side by side and a NYE with good friends after an extraordinary year seemed the right time. I opened with confidence as I’ve heard good things about both wines from this vintage. On open both showed beautifully. I didn’t pick up green notes like i have with so many other 2004s.
Over the course of the evening, I kept on being drawn to the Richebourg. Richer, rounder more enticing. The RSV was more austere, more reserved. Both were very Pinot. Ethereal, regal, refined. Red fruits.
Similar experience on the palate. It’s really splitting hairs, but the Richebourg was just a bit more open, more inviting. Both showed amazing depth and complexity. Red fruits, superb balance.

This wine's appreciation will depend on you sensitivity to green notes. Some found this stunning, I picked up green pepper that slightly detracted from an outstanding raspberry, dark cherry and spiced palate.

Appearance: Ruby, translucent, mystifying Nose of violets, boysenberry, cherry, hint of sous bois, wood, and pepper; pure Level, fruitful, hints of wood, balanced, long-lived, very pure 15 Minutes: Somewhat fuller, wood more pronounced, mushroom and truffle emerging, some effervescence 30 Minutes: More integrated, wood again more prominent, notes of chocolate 1 Hour: Raspberry, blackberry, grape, delicate violets, sous bois present but less substantial, enticing, subtly charming, notes of milk chocolate; silky, lingering, smooth, less woody but still present, more ethereal, notes of carmel; holy oak 1.5 Hours: Drinks like a not entirely molten jewel; tantalizing, thick lace; occasional bitter cocoas; a return to simple but seductive cherry End: Return of sous bois; effervescence, a certain density, tartness, while preserving a purity of character, but with pique, a virginity

This was good, and not green, but also not nearly as good as it was a few years ago, when it was expansive, silky, and full of exotic RSV spice - right now it's lesser in each department.

Pnp, crystal ruby in color. High tone nose of red fruit, spice and hint of smoke. Concentrated on palate, very fine balance of acidity and sweet fruit and after that some wood appeared just before finishing. Tannin almost smooth, and for this vintage, this is a superb effort.

Dark and possessing good depth. Wonderful black fruits. Storng herb and vegetal notes. Almost crossing the line on certain sips but in totality it is impressive.

Rose City Jeeb (Cafe Castagna - Portland, OR): Great wine that had power and finesse. Nose was spicy, floral and layered with red fruits and earth. Palate was just beautiful. Great combination of underbrush, red fruits, sage and minerals on the palate. A knockout wine that had great density and purity of flavor, but was feathery and light.

Red and black cherry aromas along with allspice and nutmeg. Elegant flavors also show same red and black cherry with moderate intensity and moderate spice. Just the slightest vegetal hint of green pepper, barely sidestepping the 2004 green bitterness character.

Serious Burgundy night (Chez Rosa-Teixeira, Limmerston St, London): A better showing from last time. We always approach 04s with caution but no need here. Still young and especially on the finish you get a clear tannic end. Nice and lush on the nose. With time this will develop very nicely but not sure if you would ever justify the price tag. 91-92, wait.

A decent effort for a RSV. Nice of the nose with long deep aroma. Maybe a bit on the young side but it lacks complexity and magic on the palate. A bit dissapointed to be honest and we find it difficult to justify the 155£ price tag,

2004 Red Burgundies (Brooklyn): Well, this does exactly what RSV is supposed to do, creeping into every area of the palate like a silken version of Spiderman's alien costume (except not evil). It's rosy and floral and while it does have a slight stalky (?) kick to it, it comes across fully ripe and round. Much more harmonious than my last experience with this wine (no bacon-like oak, for starters) and definitely one of the highlights of the lineup today. Interestingly, I went back to my other favorite, the Chevillon LSG, after tasting this, and the LSG, which was so elegant at that point in the lineup, was like a fruit bomb in comparison to this, really driving the point home how RSV can deliver so much and hit all the sensory buttons out of physical material that's almost impossibly light and ethereal.

Immediately explosive aromatics of sizzling bacon and cloves. For the first hour or two, this is very disjointed to taste and the tannins almost harsh. Eventually it pulls itself together and civilizes itself into a real beauty, the mouthfeel polished and round, the tannins amazingly silky. But the fruit presence is almost a little washed out - not underripe or dilute, just a less vibrant patina than you might expect.
