  • Still drinking very young but still very enjoyable. I defy anyone to pick this as a 10 year old syrah blind. Sorry to have only one bottle of this wine left.

  • PnP. Inking violet. Much more meaty and (good) musky than last bottle. Still with plenty of blue/black fruit, spice, balanced acidity and gritty (but going velvet) tannins. Very plush texture. Some complexity now, no real finesse to speak of. Some distracting etoh. Overall, up a bit since last bottle (2 yrs ago) as this is more interesting and integrated. Nice but not a 'moving' experience.

  • This shows how a 15.2% wine can still be refined and balanced. The acids effectively held the fruit at bay, providing a great experience. The same producer's Sonoma Cty from the same vintage is all in-your-face fruit, and tiresome to drink. Fearing a similar impact, I was happily surprised. Suggest that this be drunk over the next 5 years, as the fruit seems to be in a bit of a reserved stage, perhaps waning.

  • Very nice. Popped and poured after 4 yrs at off-site storage. Nose still very primary of ripe raspberries and slighly sour cherries, perhaps lacked the depth that would put this in the next level. Well structured throughout the tongue with just the slightest hint of brett. Lingering finish gives way to dusty tannins. This is drinking beautifully right now but there is no reason to hurry through any remaining bottles. Drink or hold through 2013.

  • New Years 2010. Turned out to bew best of the night.

  • PnP. Deepest violet. Smokey dark fruits with spice and slight pine needle/medicinal undertone on nose. Thick massive high intensity blue and black fruits from get go, fairly primal with a syrupy, gritty texture. Acids are refreshing and needed. Etoh felt and slightly intrusive. Long aftertaste. Little to no finesse and not much complexity or interest beyond the very pleasing fruit.

  • Poured blind. On this night, next to the 2004 Lucia Susan's Hill, which I believe is the only peer of this wine, the Novy beat the Lucia. It comes off a bit fresher, with more acidity and a bit livelier. Yes, it's fruit driven and richer than some of the more recent versions but it worked. Can probably live another 1-2 years more but this is my last bottle and Adam did not make much so not likely to find it again--good bye my friend.

  • Just what gutt22 said "This is, simply put, absolutely rocking good stuff" ditto

  • 15.2% alcohol. This is, simply put, absolutely rocking good stuff. First tasted out of barrel back in 2005, when it was inky black and full of fruit and a wall of tannins. Now, with a few years in bottle, it has mellowed out somewhat but still retains that absolute monster personality. It fills up your glass and palate with delicousness. Nearly black color still. Awesome nose of blue and black fruit, with a rich, meaty edge to it. In the mouth, a bully without being brawny. Loads of fruit and then a wall of complexity and structure. Strong acidity. Marvelous finish. Still some tannins, but the balance is there, and it's got such a compelling complement of flavors. A-/A

  • Showing extremely dark with a very nice nose. After an hour decant this wine is still not opening. Next time decant for two hours. This wine is still quite primary almost like a barrel sample. Should improve over the next couple of years. On day two the wine became almost port like and less drinkable. The '04 KB Syrah that we served it side by side with blew it away. Don't open another bottle of the Novy for at least another year.

  • Massively ripe and over the top. Not for me.

  • I'm a bit surprised by some of the notes and ratings posted below. Perhap the wine was in a lame phase, but tonight, it was quite tasty. Plenty of rich, sweet fruit that came across seamlessly. Wish I had bought more!

  • A bit of an odd note as well as overly acidic.

  • Fruit was a bit softer with better balance than the last bottle.

  • Generally, have come to prefer the Novy Syrahs to the Siduri pinots. This one seemed a bit bitter and not as smooth as typical for a Novy syrah.

  • Corked, bummer.

  • Deep purple with rich aromas and very fruit forward on the palate. I agree with a previous TN describing a pervasive iodine note which just is not to my liking.

  • Wow. Tremendous nose of earth, dark fruit, cotton candy pours from the decanter. Deep and dark in the glass, it is simply unctuous stuff. Lush, yet packed to the gills with dark fruit, smoke, some acidity and wood on the palate. Totally stacked on the finish that permeates all corners of the mouth for seconds after the wine goes down. So young, but so good. If I was a point guy, I'd say low 90s now with room to improve. Killer.

  • Did not decant. Deep, dark purple color. Big, bold, thick, smoky, meaty, woody. A dense wine that is full-bodied and was open and ready to go. The tannins were noticeable, but not off-putting or out of place. I kept thinking about iodine everytime I smelled the wine. This wine is just not really to my liking.

  • 15.2% alc...upon opening this wine shouts dense, or density of aroma, rich - or after having to watch Cars the movie during the blizzard with my son non stop - this wine screams KA-CHOW! Anyway, back to the nose, spice, a dollop of oak, some emerging smoky/meaty notes, and yet this wine still has those primary grapey points as well...at this point the wine is showing some fairly aggressive tannic structure, but also showing a tremendous amount of depth and flavor. Tasty wine. Can't wait for this to open up...one caveat, instead of opening up this wine became more muddied, less understandable if you will. I'll give my remaining bottles some time.

  • TB: Popped and poured a small amount into the glasses, the rest into the decanter. Very dark wine. This wine showed nothing upon opening. My first sip was not for an hour and a half or so of air-time where it still was not showing up to its potential. It finally reached a point I'll call approachable after about three hours in the glass and decanter. Very deep plum with some oakiness. This is a big wine that's really not ready yet. Oh, and beware the purple teeth.

CB: This wine definitely needs some air time to reach its potential. It really opened up after double decanting and a couple of hours. Very nice.

  • Decanted for 40 minutes. Full-bodied wine that is a dense inky purple in color. On the nose, blackberries and bacon fat. On the palate, blackberry liqeuer and cocoa powder ending in a long 30-second finish with somewhat chalky tannins. While loaded with glycerines in the glass, the mouthfeel is surprisingly light in comparison (though not "light" per se)...the attack is strong, too, but the finish eases off the pedal just a touch. In the end, this wine comes across as an undeveloped youngster that needs more bottle age to strut its stuff...it'll be interesting to see where this one heads.

  • A welcome mouthful...deep, rich, spicy, fruity. I really looked forward to sampling this after tasting every imaginable SLH pinot. The nose resonated with the same traits. This could be over the top, but I expected it to be. We opened this against a DuMol Syrah that was $30 more and the Novy destroyed it.

  • 15.2% alc...black as night...nose begins very primary, grapey almost - with some air turning into some wet earth without losing that initial idea of primary richness that needs some time to flesh out, charcoal/smokiness...palate is full-bodied, rich, medium structure, rich deep fruit driven wine...this beast just needs some time. I am going to hold mine for a at least a year before trying more. *** out of *****. Much room for improvement, opened way too early. Just arrived.

  • This needed a lot of time to evolve. Opened at 2pm, with a very heady nose. Decanted and came back ~5:30. Started to get some spice and earth. Slow cooked BBQ ribs for ~3 hrs. While eating the ribs, this bottle started to sing with great depth, no noticable alcohol and good balance. It is probably best not to touch the remainder of these bottles for a couple years. I will probably send them off-site so as not to be tempted.

  • Decanted for 1.5hrs. A nice deep purple color that is quite thick, almost like syrup. The nose showed some cherry red fruit along with some darker fruit, but there was a lot of alcohol. On the palate the alcohol was very noticeable and masked almost everthing else. This is my first time with the wine and was not sure if the wine was just closed. After about 3 hours, the alcohol was still present especially on the palate with little fruit coming through. The nose improved a little, but not in the mouth. The wine seemed a little disjointed and out of balance as well. Not sure if this will correct itself over time or not.

  • This was opened at the Benchland offline on Wednesday. Not sure who brought it. Novy is just not my style. Looking at the last Novy Syrah I had (the 2001 Rosella's Vineyard) I see I had the same complaints about the wine. It just seems too over the top. This wine was a dark rich purplish red color (almost black). A thick syrupy wine without any of elegance. For my tastes it is out of balance which is what fine wine should be all about. Others including my wife liked this much better (if fact she likes Novy so much that she preordered some Novy Syrah with the help of another CWM member). Oh joy! 85 points.

  • Brought this to Isabellas with the CWM and Benchland. Incredible nose and suprisingly approachable for such a young Syrah. Hoping this picks up a touch of spice or white pepper while I let the remainder sleep.

  • In prepping for the Novy offline here in a few hours, I started to open the bottles. It's tempting to start putting up some TNs but I will post all of my notes sometime later this weekend, as I know others will, too. However, this bottle is one I have been wanting to try since I heard Adam was releasing it. Syrah, from the Pisoni property? Off the hook idea. So, to the wine......this wine has been open 30 mins so these are initial impressions but the wine is nearly dark with just more than an ounce in the glass--holy smokes. Slight pepper, leather, tar and loads of dark rich fruit on the nose, almost like a berry liqueur as the alcohol mixes in a bit with the ripeness. Palate? Stony with also a silkiness and a dense core of black fruit. Lots of toasty. Mocha laced oak and some chalky tannin but not overpowering. Wow. I wonder what this wine tastes like 4 hours from now. I think this bugger stands up with its pedigree and glad I bought my full allocation.
