  • Knowing what I plopped, I am confident in saying it's a typical Margaux. (Had I not known the label, I'm not so sure I would know 😔)

Cork: broke in two plus a billion crumbs. Soaked halfway.
    Fill: lower neck.
Colour: like a classic Barolo from 2010.
Nose: a bit rustique with beautiful Bdx earth and olive brine.
Mouth: a perfectly balanced amazing wine of a style and type that I'm fortunate to fully enjoy every once in a while. Acidity M+, tannins: mainly dissolved but there's still a decent grip and it grew throughout the evening. A beautiful kiss of autumnal leaves on a dry day. Bdx earth, olive brine, sumi ink for the backdrop. In the forefront are amazing aromas of red berries, spring's unfurling ferns and a superbly refined type of extremely attractive pipe tobacco, licorice, dark chocolate, lipstick and Polish plums.

The wine is arguably at its last run of being a generally easy-to-approach wine for the general drinker. Oxidation is not prevalent. It's still going strong 💪 and displaying beautiful and pure, red berries.

My guess is that btls with good corks/levels will continue to deliver good experiences for the plebeians until 2028-ish. And for us nerds: at least until 2040.

Wife blinded (allergic to aged wines) approved of this as ++not old++. Unusual for 10+ year wines, but expected for this one.

    ----------------------------------------------------------

Two days later, one generous glass kept under cork.

Structurally an even better wine, but aromatically more towards old style coughing syrup...

Conclusion: this humble wine is on a roll on this humble vintage. It's lovely and then some!

  • Slightly passed its peak. Medium acidity and tannin. Medium body. Still good to drink after 1 hr opening.

  • Flasche von Bergen Aachen. Seit 2011 immer in Dormagen horizontal gelegen. Info neck. Davor seit Erwerb klimatisiert gelagert. Typischer Margaux. Weich, aromatisch, süßlich, etwas Walnuß. Reifer 80er Jahre Bordeaux mit niedrigem Alkohol aber viel Aroma. Toller Trinkfluss, tolle Eleganz! So bis mindestens 2026+. 89-90 Punkte? Very Charming!

  • Chateau, Lascombes 1981

  • Slight TCA. Still fresh but to much TCA to be enjoyable.

  • PnP. Soft, crumbling cork 3/4 soaked. Nice, surprisingly young garnet color with slight browning at the rim. Sous bois, cedar, dark fruit, leather. To my surprise, the fine to medium tannins are not yet fully resolved. Short to medium finish. Holds up well over 4h.
A very nice surprise. Drinks much younger and with a longer future ahead than the 1982 Lascombes a few weeks ago. Looking at the other tasting notes, I guess I was lucky with this bottle. 89-90

  • Edward Roberts International Pre-Auction Tasting (The Union League Club (Chicago)): Super cloudy brown color. The color was far darker brown than all of the above wines. Very oxidized…Again a wine that shouldn’t have been served. I was looked at funny when I poured the rest of my glass out. Flawed/Cooked….Awful! Even though this was from a weaker vintage this still should have shown well. I had a ’81 Pichon Baron five months prior that was beautiful. No Score given.

  • Edward Roberts International Pre-Auction Tasting (Union League Club of Chicago): Really showing oxidation. Kind of dead in terms of fruit. Elegant but not my cup of tea. There is also a black tea component on the nose and palate. Pass.

  • Past its prime. Interesting for a few sips but that's about it.

  • Not bad but past it's peak, decanted and drank in one go. Remants of fruit and tannins.

  • Well past its best, this displayed firmness on the palate, but fruit was absent. Resistant to breathing, it deteriorated rapidly.

  • Very ok wine. Class is recognizable, but the wine is at the very end of its maturity stage. Past its peak definitely, but still enjoyable.

  • Silky soft bouquet with black fruits and elegant toasted oak. In the taste vanilla, a little sweetness, good soft tannin. Very elegant. Juicy and fairly full bodied. Already very nice drinking. Do not keep too long! Another 3 – 5 years maximum.
