Château Haut-Brion and Château La Mission Haut-Brion Tasting and Dinner (Winefield's Auctioneers, Amsterdam, NL): Medium golden colour with amber reflections; attractive tertiary evolution on the nose, nuts and candied fruit, paired with tart lemon fruit and deep minerality; rich flavours on the palate, sustained by very typical firm 1996 acidity, ripe citrus fruit; gentle bitters on the finish, very good persistence. A successful marriage of energy and evolution.

Pinot Noir and some Champagne (Restaurant Brunnenstube, Beinstein): Deep golden color. Clean, medium intense nose with lots of Sherry and autolytic flavors. Not my particular cup of tea though. On the palate bone dry. Some oak, sherry and oxidized notes. Lots of power and depth, very good length. This Champagne could go well with a steak! Drinking without food it is not my personal favorite, though I must admit it is a very good Champagne. 92-93

Ex-Chateau Bottle in Double-Magnum. Cork was a nightmare to remove. Actually twisted off the top and had to use a corkscrew to finish the removal. Very touch and go!
So fresh! You could tell by the sound that this was going to act young, but it opened and showed maturity after about 30 minutes. Wonderful. Tight bead, beautiful straw-gold color. Nose of light tropical fruit with a focus on granny smith (classic PJ). Good balance of yeast.
Palette was exquisite. The '96 has always been a favorite, but this ex-chateau bottle has to have been the best yet. Complex and subtle throughout. Granny Smith, a touch of lemon, and Grapefruit. Silky mouthfeel despite the surprisingly large amount of effervescence. Although we had about twice as much as we needed, it still disappeared all too quickly!

We brought this bottle to Valentines Brunch at Bardot Brasserie as I thought it would be pretty ideal and special with the cuisine. The food was awesome and the bubbles were amazing and the two went very well together especially with the oysters and the king crab crepes. Nice secondary flavors showing with a nice fine bead of bubbles and cleansing acidity.

Served from a beautifully painted magnum. I expected the vintage to come through a bit more in a year like 1996, when in fact it was the wine's identity that was more prevalent: it was not as ample, and rounded as I thought it would be. Perhaps the wine was a little closed still. I must admit that 1996s are still very young. Nonetheless, I enjoyed this wine a lot. I will buy more if I can.

Dinner at Doyle & Lesley's (Vancouver, BC): Straw colour. This was great right from the get-go with beautiful aromas of yeast, minerals and nuts with green apple and citrus fruits. These notes carry onto the palate where the mousse is fine and delicate with bright acidity and a full but precise mouthfeel. This is drinking extremely well right now but should continue to develop for 5+ years. Excellent. 92+

Nose was given: brioche, gooseberry, pear, green apple, pineapple, vanilla, lime and white chocolate bomb. Impressive!!! Taste: a flowery, pineapple, topical juice bomb, with great acidity, lot´s of bubbles, slightly brioche touch and finally some green apple. Just a fantastic wine!

Loved this champagne upon release. Bought a case. Drank it over the years and was somewhat disappointed. So we now reach my last bottle. Off the charts. Best bottle of Belle Epoque ever going back to the 70's. Lemony toasty huge extract, still precise bubbles. I say this, and I'm sure we all say this, when will we ever learn.

This Champagne, light gold in color, retains its brisk tiny bead. The nose continues to gain complexity, showing aromas of almonds, toast, caramel and pine nuts. Medium-bodied on the palate, with nice acidity and flavors mirroring the nose. The finish is long and crisp. This well-cellared bottle shows that this bubbly still has significant life ahead of it. Drink now-12/18.

Not nearly as good as other 1996, such as Dom. It was OK with good acidity and honey, but lacks the buttery and complexity found in Dom 96 drank recently

Opened for the wifes birthday and served with sushi. Light yellow, nice easy mousse. Very floral nose with lemon and just faints hints of vanilla cookie. In the mouth it is medium bodied with good balance. More yellow fruit, but also nuts and some bread. It has clearly developed a lot in the two years since I had it last. Where many 96's seems to be shutting down these days this is is drinking very well, but perhaps also maturing at a more rapid pace.

This one was tasted as part of a vertical done at Perrier Jouet of their Belle Epoque 00, 99, 98, 96, 95, 88, 85 and 82 (see separate notes for the other wines). Wow this has wonderful acidity but sitll with a very nice creaminess to it. Starts to get to a point where it is now enjoyable but it would be interesting to keep for another 20 years or so....

Toast, orange peel and lemon on the nose. The palate has plenty of acid but little development at this stage. I haven't seen a bottle of this yet that has blown me away, but maybe it just needs more time.

Consumed on our 23rd wedding anniversary. Although a formal note was not recorded, it can be said that the tiny bead is still quite brisk. As of this point, the wine has become more complex, with almond, toast and hazelnut aromas (and flavors). The finish is long and crisp. Classic quality at this point. Drink now-12/18.

You may be doing yourself a favor by saving this, but I did myself a favor by drinking it tonight while smoking some wild boar ribs. My wife asked if there was a polite way to say her burps tasted of coconut. All in all a very nice bottle from the last time the Packers won the Superbowl. Note: It might not hold up until the next championship.

Camille's birthday at Characters. Deep golden color with fine bubbles, this champagne had a great nose of citrus, green apple and a touch of bread dough. However, not too nutty in character at this point. On the palate, this is loaded with tart green apple and citrus, which carry through the bracingly acidic finish. Food pairings were: Bacon wrapped scallop (excellent), Prawns in chili sauce (Very good) and lobster with risotto (the weakest pairing of the three). Truly mindblowing when paired with the bacon and scallop.

Light hayish color. Round, straightforward and fruity nose of apples, pears and some lemon. Good persistent mousse. Tastewise it's fruity as well as round, accessible and pleasing. A real crowd pleaser in a positive sense. I miss some complexity, but still a pretty good champagne. Rating: 93

Styled similarly to the '96 Dom, though it falls just short of that wine. It shows mostly apple cider, graham cracker, and roasted nut essences on a soft, balanced, and approachable frame, and it provides another good light- to medium-bodied fallback (to Bollinger, Egly-Ouriet, and Krug) for the wife. (Tasted twice, on 12/26/06 and 2/25/07, with roughly consistent notes, though it seemed spicier and more loaded with caramel on the second go-round.)

Rating 90 (93) in Juhlins terms. Still shy, in that it is not enormously complex. Yet almost seamless (a little hitch between the front and mid palate evident) and very smooth, very drinkable. Delicate and round-shouldered in style vs. brawny Krug/Bollinger style. Yellow and green aromas on the nose. Right now the kind of wine that's very good but you don't notice - a wine of good breeding.

Nose is quite reticent. Palate is refined and long. Much better on the palate than the nose this time, gave the wine plenty of time in the glass but the aromas didn't open up. Might just be in an awkward phase.

Provado às cegas para o GG06. Importado pela Pernod Ricard do Brasil. Perlage muito fina, intensa, numerosa. Mousse maravilhosa, envolvente, notas de pão tostado, brioche, fermento, elegantíssimo, distinto, final muito longo. (AA) Excepcional.

This is WAY young. It's not really evolved at all. Translucent green in the glass, with very foamy, large mousse. Lemon and yeast on the promising nose, but the palate is totally one-dimensional. Just citrus. With some air, the palate picked up some blue cheese mold and a touch of dough. Good acidity. Let this one sleep at least five years.

Consumed on our 18th wedding anniversary at home, served with smoked salmon. Medium straw in color, with a brisk tiny bead. Clean nose, showing moderately intense toast, nutmeg, sawdust and lemon. Medium-bodied on the palate, with crisp acidity and similar flavors as for the nose. Medium, slightly tart finish. Very enjoyable now, but will definitely improve with time in the bottle. This may be a vintage to buy for the next several anniversary celebrations.

Color is pale straw with a hint of gold. Nose shows lemon, yeast, and dough. On the palate, lemon, light dough, round yeasty flavors, nut, and good balancing acidity. Very nice.

2006 Champagne Tasting ( wines): One of the better sparklers at this tasting. Rich texture. Notes of bread dough and tart fruit. Long lush finish. 93-94 points.
