  • Beau bouchon, à peine taché (1 cm)
    Pourpre sombre

  • So the last bottle must have been an one off.
This 2005 was spectacular. Bouquet of raspberries, spices and earthy notes. Great structure, fine yet robust tannins, grip on the palate and a long finish.

  • Peppery notes, strawberries on the palate. But this bottle seemed to lose structure and weight. Drink soon.

  • Seductive nose, promising much more than what was delivered on the palate.
In the mouth, this is first of all rich. Almost overwhelmingly so. It displays all the beautiful things that Grenache can bring forth. However, everything is in a disarray. There's no cohesion, no balance. Like very modern Jazz, when each musician is masturbating away on their own accord...

Not a memorable btl, but still delicious and good with traddo French cuisine.

  • Deep red, nice weight on the palate, strawberries and blueberries, good grip and peppery finish.

  • Immediately very spicy nose in a seductive way. Then dense with blackberry and blueberry, also red fruit. After an hour or so this has the most rich, decadent, opulent fruit, that only can be old grenache wines. Quite special and impressive.
In the beginning you feel the rich fruit in the midpalate, but then the finish kicks in with a lot of acidity and dryness. Seems like how it is with modern wines like i have experienced with Pavie and Casanova di Neri.
Guess you have to wait till these wines absorbes their oak.

  • Wanted to try again after the previous bottle was flawed. This one is better. Blackberry and black raspberry flavors, hoison sauce, licorice, earth and spice. Still not what I would call rich, what with the prominent acidity, but concentrated and long. Definitely better than the first, and gives me hope for the last bottle, but still not a patch on the 2007.

  • decanted for one hour, notable sediment mostly still adhered to bottle.

well, this is just a testament to the evolution of one's wine preferences; an early to mid-aught's reliance on Expert evaluation & hyperbole has me still w/a dwindling cellar segment that is less satisfying today. works with food if calibrated; on it's own, tho made well in its style, has less current appeal. still own, love & relish certain cdpapes, less & less this.

  • Hmm, I wish I had one of the opulent, rich, complex wines others described. Mine was a fairly straightforward fruity, high acid wine, with a somewhat hollow midpalate and abrupt finish. No obvious flaws.

  • Decanted for an hour. NOT enough. After 3 hours in decanter, became beautiful. Seems like it could go 10 plus years. Off putting flavors for first two hours. Glad I drank slowly!

  • Deep garnet, with fading browning edges. Deeply complex upfront with ripe redcurrants, dates, red flowers, barnyard, charcuterie, white pepper, nutmeg. Tannins softened whilst acids mouthwatering, and quite a good length. Great wine!

  • Wow! Good nose, stewed dark plum and spices. Intense, opulent with ripe dark fruit on the palate. Incredibly concentrated. Saw a comment that someone did not like this as it was sweet and austere - I thought there was an element of both but in a good way. Some acidity and some fine grained tannins to balance all the fruit. Long finish. Opened 3 hours before drinking, still improved a little after first glass.

  • This was decanted for a few hours and it just turned on beautifully! From the first smell, this is some utterly delicious CdP that has a bit of a larger scale. There is a succulent and somewhat savory side to the tones of dark plums, black cherries, raspberries, hoison sauce, licorice, christmas fruitcake, savory spices, violets, kirsch liqueur, and some black currant jam. The Full bodied feel has some weight and heft to it, but it isn't close to overdone as there is balance and depth. The structure has really peeled back with medium acidity and integrated, medium tannins. This is a sexy beast of a CdP. While I wouldn't really use the word elegant to describe it, I also wouldn't claim that this is syrupy or too big. Yes, it's over 15% alcohol and yes, this is the opposite of bashful. It's also delicious and right in a groove now for some heady enjoyment.

  • Outstanding! 15 years in this wine is going strong. Excellent balance, with a strong currant flavor. Glad I have more. A nice high bar for other CnP's

  • Had this side by side with the 2015 regular bottling, and it was amazing to think this wine was 10 years older. It showed a huge presence, sharp, bold flavors, and intensely perfumed. Attacks the palate, and takes no prisoners. Fascinating juice with a long future ahead of it.

  • Lovely. Ruby in colour, probably a couple of years from prime - two hours of breathing before it was drunk. Beautiful.

  • I really dislike this wine. Dark black in color with a great deal of fine gritty tannin. The fruit is over ripe. It is hard to understand how this could be both too sweet and too austere at the same time. Either me or my wife could finish a glass.

  • Medium ruby. Powerful wine with notes of black berries, herbs and licorice. High alcohol. Mid+ acidity and tannins. Would probably get more round with further aging. Long finish.

  • Bought on release. PopN Pour, consumed over evening with family. Superb, complex, does not show any heat (strip says "14.1-16%"). Kirsch, garrigue, rich, satisfying, good depth of fruit. ... just the right side of being too big. To be analytical, aromatics would need to be more complex or tannins finer to get >= 95. Best Janasse bottling. Great wine, I love it. Will hold and may improve. Worth going into the secondary market to find. Brilliant.

  • A long time ago, in what seems like a galaxy far, far away, a dear friend gave me this bottle for Christmas. He passed a couple of weeks ago, but his memory, his humanity will be present with me to my last days. He loved wine. He was a gentle, kind soul. Tonight I opened the bottle, raising a glass to his memory, and enjoying the fruits of his labor as a wine merchant. It barely matters what the wine tasted like, though it was objectively delicious. It married the modern elements of prestige cuvée Châteauneuf (ripe, kirsch inflected fruit) with an earthiness and herbal element that felt like the genuine article. The longer the bottle was open, the more it showed its origins, moving from modern exemplar to terroir vehicle. Then, on the finish, it bounced back with ripe, red cherry, to end with a heartfelt smile. Farewell Joe. You gifted me with an extra memory. Any time I have a glass of Janasse I will think of you, treasure our friendship, and shed a tear.

  • Brilliant wine that evolves through the evening - blast of fruits upon open but later shows roasted meat (and even a little sinew) and then turns vegetal. Also pleasantly surprised by the spicy kick at the finish.

  • CdP clearance night. Split wine session. Tasted blind. Drank in Gabriel Standart.
Appearance is clear, deep intensity, ruby colour. Long legs.
Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of dark red cherries, garrigue, sweet herbs, licorice. Developing.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, high alcohol (15.5%), high tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of dark red cherries, plums, garrigue, sweet herbs, dark earth, licorice so concentrated it is almost honey-like. Very long finish.
Very good quality. Lovely full-on CdP but doesn't go over the top. Very enjoyable. Still has some good years about 4-5 more to go.
I much prefer the VV to the Chaupin for Janasse.

  • Clear medium garnet; clean pronounced nose of balsamic, dried figs, leather and cedar; dry; medium plus acidity; medium plus tannins; high alcohol; medium plus body; medium plus flavour intensity; pfn with ripe fruit; long finish; drink now or in 5 years; spectacular wine that’s aged perfectly - wish I’d bought more bottles

  • Had a absolutely enchanting nose but took longer to open up than I expected. 3 hours decant with bottle opened and was still very tannic, sharp, and alot of alcohol burn. Then 5 minutes in vSpin followed by another 45 minutes for this beauty to give up it's treasures. Medium garnet in color. On the palate Blackberry, cherry, earthy, smoked meat, and licorice.

  • Poured via Coravin. Tasted a month previously by Coravin and slightly closed but now is tasting beautifully. Would drink now, I am sure has more life ahead but is tasting so good now would not pass up especially if you have more bottles. The nose / aroma filled the room and body is full with a silky texture. Earthy, sweet plush fruit and smoky earthiness all in one wine. Tannins has resolved and wine is in a good place right now. A little sharp which is the only reason for the score being 95 or would be near perfect for a CDP. Enjoy! Cheers!

  • Opened but not decanted four hours before serving. Excellent and got even better in the glass and continued to blossom until the two of us finished the bottle. All you could ask for in a CdP, or, in fact, any wine. Nose (and palate) developed from about zero to fill the room!

  • Lots of sediment clinging to the inside of the bottle. Decanting advised. Agree with previous notes - this wine is a little sweet for my taste. Good fruit and depth of flavour. Tannins seem mostly resolved. Colour is ruby red. Drinks fine on second night so I think I could hold my other bottles another a couple of years.

  • Needed a decant as there was lots of fine sediment. Very sweet wine, not overly ripe, lots of fruit. Very nice didn't rise to the level of excellence that others see here IMHO.

  • This wine is firing on all cynliders tonight. Full bodied and voluptuous. This wine is ripe but not overdone. Slightly spicy yet still sweet this wine has a long finish. So easy to drink the 15.5 percent alcohol sneaks up on you. I am not sure holding longer will change much so drink up. A 95-96 showing.

  • Janasse Tasting (Rolando's House): Bittersweet tannins, very mineral, some woodsy notes. Very strong cherry. The wine needs to still integrate.

  • This time I had this wine from standard 750 bottle, last time was magnum. The 750 seemed even more full bodied, dense and concentrated. Perhaps the magnum I had was somewhat closed but this bottle was firing on all cylinders. I often think Robert Parker overrates wine but he is spot on with his 98 rating. Load of black fruit, smoked meats and a nose that is to die for, this wine is extremely comnplex. Opaque in color and super concentrated, this wine promising a long drinking window. I would say this wine still is not 100 percent mature but I can be thoroughly enjoyed with a little decanter time. This is the wine to drink while your 2010s age.

  • SLDS September 2018: Blackberry, plum, cherry and some earthy briar notes. Bold palate, rich and ripe with a full profile - still retains some cool red fruit and good length though. More time should serve this well.

  • Agree with Balthazar, the nose was definitely the most interesting part of this bottle, showing that familiar, lovely must of an old world wine. Plenty of earth tones mixed with stewed dark fruits, so inviting. Unfortunately, the wine was a bit dull on your tongue. Certainly not a bad wine, there were faint notes of blackberry, tea, and raisins, but one can do much better at this price point, particularly if you are a CDP fan. This doesn't hold a candle to the 07. Ranked #3 out of 4 on the night.

  • The nose is the more interesting part. Black cherries, herbs, liquorice, hints of menthol, but also some indications of overripeness. On the palate it has good concentration and a port like sweetness, but - at least for my taste - it lacks freshness, tension and vivacity. Simply too raisiny.

  • Natural cork in excellent shape; clear, deep ruby color, some fine sediment. Clean, with intense notes of baked plum, liquorice, raw meat, wax, fruitcake, chocolate and some interesting floral. Dry, with low acidity, tanninous, warm, with flavours of dark red fruit and dark chocolate and a long finish. I really like this.

  • Deep ruby. Attractive mix of ripe red and black fruits with licorice drop. Big but not overripe or overdone. Deep sweet fruit, strong tannins, excellent complexity, and no heat. A robust, assertive, well balanced, mouth filling wine if you're in the mood for a powerhouse that does not push the limits of extraction or alcohol.

  • Nose is great but a little reticent. Dark Blackberry. Meaty/bacon. Cinnamon, baking spices. Tannins have softened but fruit is still there. In a perfect place at the moment for me.

  • Dark red to almost purple. Ripe cherry fruit, spice and minerals, good tartness, warm blackberry cobbler, well integrated oak with vanilla bean and a generous nose of spiced fruit. Great concentration. Drinking well now but many good years ahead of it.

  • A blend of Grenache (65%), Mourvèdre (20%) and Syrah (10%) with the remainder filled out with other permitted varieties. 40% of the grapes come from a plot planted in 1920 and 40% from a plot planted in 1965 with 20% from younger vineyards. Macerated for one month with the skins. 75% of the wine is aged in large, old oak vats and 25% in demi-muids (600 liters). Whopping 15,5% alcohol.

Somewhat translucent and very deep dark cherry color with an almost black core. The nose feels pretty similar to Janasse Chaupin 2005 tasted alongside, but in a bit drier, more savory and more restrained from. There are aromas of strawberry juice, blackberry jam, some peppery spice, a little bit of sweet grapey fruit, perfumed floral hints and a touch of raisiny fruit. The wine is bold, very full-bodied and really ripe on the palate with rich, dark-toned flavors of sweet strawberries, cherry marmalade, some dark-toned pruney fruit, a little bit of blackberry jam and a developed hint of raisin. The wine feels a bit softer and less structured than Chaupin 2005 with rather modest, even a bit low acidity; fortunately the tannins are pretty firm and somewhat grippy, so they contribute enough to the structure and chewy texture of the wine. The finish is very rich and opulent with long, powerful and rather sweet flavors of raisin, some bitter spices, a little bit of blackberry jam and a hint of sweet black cherries. The alcohol lends a warming touch to the aftertaste, whereas the tannins make the wine finish on a very slightly grippy and astringent note.

A quite massive and nicely developed Châteauneuf-du-Pape with lots of power, ripeness, fruit and concentration. The structure is a bit too soft for such a big wine, but at least the wine still retains some tannic grip so it doesn't come across as too flabby and toothless. This should be the flagship wine of the Domaine, but I found the lesser Chaupin 2005 - that was served alongside - much more impressive and definitely in a better phase than this one. This is still good, but undoubtedly reaching the end of its plateau of maturity. Surely the fruit has a lot of mileage still left, but as the wine is so low in acidity, the wine isn't that impressive structure-wise anymore, and you really want to drink the wine while it still has some tannic action left. I'd drink sooner rather than later. Good stuff, but definitely nothing mindblowing.

  • Thrown into the decanter and consumed over 2 hours. Notes of cinamon, bacon, rich red fruits and some raisin on the nose. In the mouth, seamless package of fruit, tannin and acid. Large scaled, but well integrated and balanced. This wine is not for the faint of heart, but does not teeter towards over the top. Still has many years to go at its peak. Sad this was my only bottle. Delicious!

  • Similar to previous bottles, although it's becoming very raisin in flavor, dark fruits, plum, more raisin, chewy tannins, very good balance and opens nicely after 2 hours of air. Drinking well right now, I wouldn't hold these too much longer in fears they will become almost completely raisin in profile.

  • Enjoyed over several hours Christmas day. Started with a 1-hour decant: the wine was open with olive tapenade and a savory meatiness on the nose. Over the next couple hours the wine softened and opened up further. Liquorice and herbs appeared on the nose, which became richer. On the palate an initial sweetness made way for an herbaceous, coffee and dark chocolate-tinged finish. Tannins started off fairly noticeable although soft, suggesting that this wine could age a bit longer before full maturity.

All in all, a rich, savory, and enjoyable CDP. This is definitely approachable now with decanting, but I suspect that its best days are yet to come! (I should say that my mom raved about it!)

  • CT Seattle CdP Tasting (Amoroso Room, Bellevue Wine Storage): Dark garnet color, full body, in your face cherry kirsch, ripe fruit, pepper, still lots of tannins. All worked together. Opened at CT Seattle CdP tasting, first wine tasted. My 7th, groups 9th (many disliked intensely) of 9. I likely would have scored higher if I had spent real time with this wine; more my style than the group's.

  • Not decanted, but advisable. This is a big ass wine, still primary, and taking no prisoners on its way across my palate tonight. The fruit remains the main attraction, and there is enough tannin to shed that you can easily hold this another 5 years. I'm of the opinion that it's attraction is this robust, in your face, Parker love fest aspect, so drinking it now satisfies all the guilty pleasures associated with a pie in the face to the so called anti-flavor elite. It's actually the type of wine I don't drink too often any more, but it's a sweet reminder of my impetuous wine youth. Lots of pepper and iron + the ubiquitous kirsch. Whip up a big vat of meat (ok, I'm having white bean, chicken chili), and drink up.

  • I wouldn't guess CdP from the nose, but the palate screams it. Delicious spice and garrique, long finish and quite fabulous. So young, but no need to cellar this as the fruit is in harmony with everything else. Only detractor is the alcohol at 15.5%.

  • Dark ruby core with minimal lightening at the rim. Black raspberry, ground coffee, and just a whiff of surmaturité. Big and ripe but not objectionably so. In fact, in addition to all of the fruit, this has quite a bit more going on, including green olive, some smoke, and solid acidity. Wood tannins dry the finish a bit. Based upon my one previous experience with this where it was completely over the top, I started out strongly predisposed to not like the wine but found myself pleasantly surprised. This bottle certainly did not fall apart by age 10 and could still probably still provide pleasure for another couple of years.

  • (Decanted for two hours.) This wine has a beautiful black cherry color throughout. The bouquet is rich, almost pungent with aromas of ripe plum, fruit cake, leather, anise, warm tar, horse sweat and lavender. It is full-bodied and plump in the mouth with exceptionally clean flavors of blackberry, plum, forcemeat, licorice, soy sauce and freshly turned earth. The tannins are still moderately big but with a round shape and smooth texture; indeed, they frame and complement the flavors very nicely. The moderately long finish has hints of bitter chocolate, fruit compote and galbanum. This is an outstanding Châteauneuf-du-Pape that simply does everything right. While its virtues are power, balance and persistence, it is awakening very, very slowing from its long slumber. I am certain it will improve further over the next several years. 96+ points.

  • 93+. Huge structure on this wine, and tons of cranberry, notes. Complex wine. Somewhat reminded on the 09' Beaucastel Hommage I had recently. Very serious stuff that is built to age.

  • The high alcohol pokes through on the nose. Not as much on the palate. Good CdP spice, lots of earth, and dark fruit. Nice long aftertaste. Works well with the right food and tonight it was brisket.

  • hugely rich
Had to add a cube of ice despite a 2 he decant

If you're looking for a good food wine then it's an 85

If you're looking for a bit of fun on the side ... But with liquer like consequences than 91

Overall? A mystery. Love it / hate it. Only had one glass and the wife's down the sink . But not because it's bad... Just inappropriate

  • "4 months after the Coravin tasting" - checking the remaining wine (Osteria da Fiorella): Coravin tasting

bought 2 bottles from vinsgrandscrus.com on Oct 2010 and kept both in my wine cooler.
Coravin tasted the 1st May 1st, 2014. Was awful.
So tried Coravin tasting the 2nd bottle on Sep 4, 2014. Another disappointment!!!

Too stinky for a wine to be enjoyable. Something must be wrong with this bottle. I love CDP with all its earthy funky aromas. But this one was awful.
should be scored very low, e.g. 70 - but don't want to spoil Janasse CDP VV great records.
    what a shame…. very disappointing...

  • Decanted for a couple hours before consuming. Not as good as other bottles I've had of this, but definitely read to drink now or hold for 10 years. I don't see this continuing to improve much or at all, but it's far from starting to decline. Tannins are still there but much more refined. Dark rich fruit with a nose that explodes after opening. Very nice.

  • On pulling the cork, this wine was overwhelmingly bretty. Color is good: deep purple. With time some of the Brett blows off, and you find a nose of framboise liqueur with just a residual hint of fresh sawdust. On the palate, the fruit has a firmness, and there is a significant bitter note that works well against the tannic backdrop. Still, this is not a great success for Janasse.

  • Medium color. Some nice raspberry fruit and herbs, but mostly what is going on here is alcohol, with nose searing heat. Hard to take more than a few sips of this.

93 pts

  • My last experience was not very satisfying. This time I gave the wine a four-hour decant. This is something after all. (A bad earlier bottle?) Dark ruby color. The full panoply of southern Rhone aromas: plums, cherries, strawberries, licorice, thyme, lavender, forest floor, cocoa, charcuterie, and I swear, the sun. The depth of flavors is dizzying: ripe and rich fruit mixed with spice cabinet and dark chocolate. Nice underlying acidity makes the whole rich concoction seem light and balanced. Perhaps a bit of sweetness on the long bitter finish but no heat or port. Tannins are present but moderate and no way intrusive. This wine is big, vibrant and sexy. (Imagine Rhonda Fleming in 1950s Technicolor.) Just opening from its dumb stage, I am guessing two decades of gorgeous pleasure ahead. 97 points.

  • Didn't seem quite as open as the last bottle I had, but still excellent. Lots of dark fruit, kirsch, tapenade, and mineral. Paired with chipotle beef stew on butternut squash topped with avocado and tomato, courtesy of my daughter.

COLOR: Opaque purple with medium purple-cherry rim
NOTE: This is a wine best enjoyed in a controlled environment, and it deserves as much. It's one to have with your significant other, not 10 friends. It's only been open an hour, but it's a warm day and already the nose is opening up like a glorious grilled plum pudding, with rosewood dust, kirsch, nutmeg and Saigon cinnamon. Yeah, it's singing again. So sad this is my last bottle. I could buy more at $150 a pop, but that would strain the enjoyment.
The mouth is rich, refined and full of glycerin. The fruit takes center stage and is again a composite of grilled plum, black cherry liqueur, hibiscus tea (that's a new one), purple heirloom tomato, baking spices.
The finish sees more structure and it tends to take over the fruit, kind of like a fruit-infused dark chocolate truffle, where your first impression is of the dusty cocoa, then the fruit/cocoa, then more cocoa in the finish. Still plenty of fruit in the finish, but you definitely feel the drying of the tannins and enjoy the complexities of the oak used to cure this bad boy. What a mouthful of wine. Enjoying this on its own, but this wine would pair well with any fatty food, especially meats. It has a very smoky, tannic backbone that warms the soul. Eight years from harvest, this thing still seems like its got years before it hits its peak. But it's drinking great now. Enjoy it with a 2-4 hour decant.

Hey Frank Murray, try it again. I didn't find any heat anywhere in this bottle.

  • double-decanted & corked to travel. deep garnet red w/blue highlights; blowzy, almost over-the-top aromatics of kirsch liqueur, blackberries, powdered charcoal; full-bodied, nearly unctuous; rich black cherry & blackberry JAM, sweet brown spices, whiffs of herb & mineral dust; first bottle in 4 years, seems certainly better resolved but clearly demands robust accompaniment. almost too much. . . .

  • Opened and decanted two hours. Nice deep ruby color. Nose seemed very muted, with mere hints of lavender, strawberry and plum. Very large and heavy in the mouth: ripe and expansive but lacking cut, definition, focus, clarity. Tannins present but not well integrated. Overall, somewhat flat and befuddled. Bad bottle or is it going through a dumb period? Will reserve judgment.

  • Are the high scoring Chateauneufs the 21st century version of the 1990s Oz Shiraz?: Black Garnet. Nose of raspberry and black cherry compote. taste was overwhelmingly mouthfilling with the same. Very good with a few sips, but ultimately tiring and I didn't finish my glass.

  • Some bottle variation? Opened and aerated to decanter for 2 hours, served at cellar temp. Very lively and bright up until the 2 hour mark, then a noticeable decline. After my bottle of 4 months ago, and then this, I'd be suspect as to the long term cellaring prospects here. It's got some flash and curves now, why not enjoy in the near to mid-term...I wanted to like this more than I actually did. 14,5% abv, drink thru 2019

  • A bit dumb with Raisiny sweetness and very little backbone. Hoping it's simply in a backward state. Edges haven't turned and hoping some earthy undertones will start to evolve in bottle over the next year.

  • We thoroughly enjoyed this. As others have said, the wine is still pretty primary, but on the other hand the fruit is as fresh and rich as it's ever going to be. Raspberry is the main flavor, along with a streak of cherry and some peppery spice. Mild tannins. The wine didn't seem overly alcoholic to me, especially given the fairly intense fruit. There is no doubt that the wine will become more complex, and the fruit will mellow, with age -- but there's a lot to be said for a big fresh tasty high-end CDP.

  • CT Wisconsin Offline 2; 10/5/2012-10/6/2012 (Madison, WI): Beautiful deep ruby color. Loaded with sweet raspberry and grape jelly on the nose. Similar palate, with some peppery alcohol. Primary, warm, very ripe and sweet but not syrupy. A really fun and impressive wine for its style. To drink now or within 5 years, as I doubt its ageability.

  • Opened to inspect, possibly aerate/decant 6 hours before service. There is some sediment, but it's very fine and of little consequence. Lovely garnet toward ruby core, no sign of age; cork looks like it's about 10 minutes old. Powerful, almost ceaseless nose of black raspberry, smoke, baking spice, some blood. With 15 minutes in the glass, additional red and black fruits emerge on the nose and full-bodied palate including melted red licorice, garrigue, vanilla and herbs. Near weightless, seamless, the acids are lively. Bright, and fresh, this is also painfully tight right now (which I knew would prolly be the case). I'm going to let it aerate until service. Perhaps I'll update this note tomorrow. Easily in the good to very good, but nothing that suggests outstanding or epic. Final take-away: I paid too much, this drinks more like a nice $45 (or less) bottle. 14,5% abv.

  • I am a little puzzled here, as there is a string of positive reviews on this wine by other users, yet my experience was less so. What distracted me on this bottling was the heat. It seemed to be a part of the wine throughout the experience and while the fruit is terrific and the wine expresses a lot of flavor, to have a wine of acclaim show the booziness that this showed was distracting. The 2006 Pignan next to it was really just so much better.

  • Grenache Tasting at Dan's (Chez Dan): Deep ruby color. You could tell this was a classy wine from the start. Still very primary. Nose of mostly black fruit, a little chocolate. Maybe a tiny hint of VA -- not in a bad way. With air some faint scents of lavender and herbs came out. Nice depth to the aromas. On the palate this is smooth, rich, and concentrated. Intense dark fruit, almost liquer like, sweet without being cloying, with wonderful depth through the midpalate, and a little bit of dark chocolate. Lots of fine-grained grippy tannin, that got stronger with air -- this started to shut down a bit after 60-90 minutes open. Just a touch of alcoholic heat on the back end that detracts slightly (not a surprise as this is 15.5% alcohol -- damn!). Long dark fruit finish. This is a very, very good wine if you like the style -- it's certainly a concentrated fruit bomb, but it's not heavy with glycerin in the way some napa cabs are. And it still needs several years. I think it lacks some complexity, although time may fix this. But for me it also lacks CdP-ness. I don't drink this and feel transported to Provence.

NOTE: Okay, so I was probably trying to keep up with Ruthie on the descriptives here, but this was seriously an ever-evolving wine and will definitely make for old bones. Nose is sauteed black fig, fig paste, dried cranberry, garrigue, hints of sweet blueberry liqueur, honeysuckle, jasmin. Then some mesquite and white pepper with limestone sneaks in. Intoxicating boquet that changes in the glass all the time! The mouth is med-hvy Knott's boysenberry syrup, black cherry, grilled black figs, cracked black pepper, lavender, cinnamon, nutmeg. Tannins are ripe but lots of grip takes hold. Finish is full of raspberry jam, more boysenberry syrup, cherry pits, pomagranate seeds, more red spectrum than black. Dried tobacco leaf, very savory, full of umami (now there's a word we don't hear much!). Mineral driven & needs time for integration & tannins to resolve. Like black fruit liqueur drizzled on cracked hot granite. Almost animal & meaty (is that the Mourvedre?). Wow!!! My WOTN!

  • So, this was one of those night where, in good company, you go into your cellar and in a corner of your eye, you see these bottles sleeping. You know it is too soon but you just can't resist trying... Is this a 98 points bottle of wine? For me, now, it is not. However this has the potential to turn into one of the best bottles of my cellar. This is amazingly powerfull, with allready good balance. The accidity was impeccable. Is it enjoyable now? Yes, at least after a long decanting. Will I touch an other bottle soon? Not in at least 5 years. This will even be so much better then. 94+

  • Great wine with beautiful nose, structure and balance. I was dissapointed with the finish as there was too much heat, probably from the alcohol. This held back my score on this wine for now. If this resolves itself over time, then this will be a 98 point wine. Do not open another for 3 years.

  • Wine was open about 8 hours prior to consumption, no decanter. Nose was explosive, raspberry, strawberry, caramel and coffee were very noticeable. Terrific balance, real fine tannins and a nice sweetness from the mid-palate through the finish. It was obviously young with slight heat on the finish that I'm convinced will be resolved in 5 years or so.

  • Chateauneuf du Pape 2005 horizontal (Crystal Wines): Wow. This wine really impressed me, showing better than the much hyped Cos des Papes and the entirely excellent Usseglio Mon Aieul from the same vintage. A royal purple colour with a light rim. Lovely sweetish nose, with earthy weight, dark, fragrant cherries, smoky meat, toasty brown sugar and (with time) clear cassis notes. Absolutely mouthfilling flavours on the palate, with thick, dark fruits and lovely spice. A little closed at mid-palate at first, but opened up to show great balance, focus and complexity. Grand, grand finish. Great length with flourishes of spice and smoke. Grippy tannins. This closed up at some point unfortunately, but I think it will be an absolute beauty in 5-8 years.
