Firm, crisp, meaty, chewy, old-school styled, classic Bordeaux with rustic tannins and cedar, tobacco, and leafy herbs that accents the crunchy red currants. Drink from 2022-2040.

1986 Bordeaux plus some supplements (Restaurant Brunnenstube, Beinstein): Popped and poured. Clear, deep garnet color. Nose with some brett, tertiary notes, oak, some tobacco. On the palate some animal and barn notes, good integrated acidity, very good and firm tannin, good texture, juicy, good length. Unfortunately, also some irritating cellar tone that prevents the wine from rating as flawless. 88-89

We drank this along with the 86 Gruaud Larose, and I had a very slight preference for this one. This showed more red fruit tones and hints of mint along with the earth and leather tones. Just a hair more complexity and less structured. The GL seems like it is the younger wine with possibly more development ahead, where this one is at peak. I could have sat with this and drank it all night.

the bottle show a small seepages, so it may not be representative.
4 hours slow ox, 30 min decant and drank over 2 hours.
Clear, purple (i was surprise), black currant, red cherry, red plum, with eucalyptiusWhite pepper, and liquorice. Having cellared the bottle for 20+ years, i was suprised that tertiary flavour was weak with some leather, coffee and tobacco
The remaining fruit seamed awkward and was not in harmony with the firm unyielding tannin. Finish was medium

Finished my last bottle, and decanted it for 1 hour. Very nice nose, typical Bordeaux perfume. Nice red fruits on the palate, with good intensity. Served this with Prime Rib and Yorkshire Pudding.

I enjoyed it but thought it was a bit flat and unexciting. Certainly less interesting than the dry creek Or the 1995 Martin Ray Cabernet Or The 1989 gruard larose

WOW! This magnum really showed well fully matured now, Calon Segur is ready to drink over the next decade! Delicious figues, Casis, raspberry, Grill and dark berries. This had all you want!
Drink now, no need to hold!

Strong fill, and cork came out in one piece. Brief decant. Ruby with moderate amount of bricking. Gorgeous, purfumed Bordeaux nose: pine, menthol, potpourri, lead pencil, cedar, and some brie rind funk. Just an outstanding nose. Plenty of life left on the palate, but definitely on the backside of peak. Soft tannin and fading supple strawberry and raspberry fruit. Still a good kick of acidity. A beautiful example of aged Bdx. 93-94pts

Decanted for 45minutes. This had an explosive nose of Green humid forest floor with great redberries, black currant and creme de cassis.
The palate was a lot more earthy driven. There is a lot of rasberry and oak going on here with some very delicious acidity - the tannins are keeping it a very structured wine still!
This could with no doubt be cellared for another 5-10 years. But it drinks deliciously by now. No hurry!

It took 45 mins in the decanter for the wine to open up. Classic left bank bordeaux with tobacco, smoke, graphite and leather. Palate had tart fruit, smoke, acid and secondary taste. Its still very tannic. Finish was short and acidic. Cant compare it with his beautiful 89 and 90. Drinking at its peak/slightly over its peak.

Translucent ruby in the glass; nose is more accessible than the Pichon LaLande on opening, and the iron/blood note is more pronounced here.
Oh, this is nice on the palate - sweet/ripe fruit, no hard edges, just a pleasure to try right now (and I would think a pretty good QPR if it can be found at auction).

Translucent ruby in the glass; the nose has ferrous notes, blood and leather.
Medium- to light-bodied on the palate; open and expressive, with ripe blackberry fruit - there is a "savoriness" here that is pretty appealing right now. A little acerbity on the finish, but given the slow to relent tannins of this vintage, not bad at all on first look.
Opened for a dinner tonight, so time wise this will probably get 5+ hours of slow-O before serving.

The wine is now over its peak. On the nose, it had cherries, tobacco and leather. The body of the wine seems to be falling apart. The finish was short, bitter and sharp. Drink up if you still have it

Decanted for 1 hour. Very nice nose, typical Bordeaux perfume. Nice red fruits on the palate, with good intensity. Served this after the 1982 Batailley, with Prime Rib and roasted potatoes. This wine was easily the favorite, but ... The aftertaste was noticeably short / sharp / bitter compared to the Batailley.

Wow! What a bottle. Stored ideally in the my cellar since 1989. Smooth elegance with a well balanced and withheld power. Resembled more the elegance of a St. Julien than the austerity and power of St. Estephe. Tasted alongside Pichon Comtesse 86 and Lynch Bages 85. To bottles that took the tasting, but Calon Segur was absolutely not a bad third weel! Wonderful bottle. Drink up.

Misc Bordeaux (Frederiksberg): Nice black currant fruit depth with some liquorice, sewer and black pepper. Very enjoyable and easy to drink with still lots of fruit and green herbs. Perhaps a little short aftertaste but a lovely wine.

3rd Annual Best of Bordeaux vs Kings of Kalifornia (PRIMA, Walnut Creek): tasted blind, (wine#7) nose - earth, smoke, mushroom, musty mouth - tea. considerable round tannins and overall very subtle fruit. In fact the fruit on this wine is almost an afterthought. A food wine extraordinaire. Drink up.

Nose is mineral, very smoky, with scent of forest soil in autumn. In the mouth, there is not much fruit left, minerality, graphite and autumn forest flavours dominate hints of liquorice. Although tanins are round, the wine is a bit short and dr and lacks opulence.

Chinese New Year Dinner ("The Dining Room", Aberdeen Marina Club, Hong Kong): Translucent, freshly bright crimson colour that belies its age. Nose is really classy, earthy, damp soil, a walk through a damp and dark woodland, high notes of graphite and pencil lead counterpointed by bass notes of black liquorice candy. Palate is much thinner than the other wines tonight and a disappointment after the promise of the nose. Very short finish. No resonance. I had expected better from it.

Flawed cork indicating poor storage in spite of the assurances that this bottle had been properly cellared. Cork came out intact, but was a deep, mottled brown color that was the scariest looking wine closure I'd ever seen. What a pity.

Cellared under fine conditions since release. Decanted 30' ahead of time. Dark Medoc robe; very dru bouquet, dusty/musty, damp earth graphite with evasive tones of blackberry; Bordeaux crushed violet flavors, quite dry in the mouth, medium-full in an old style Medoc way, a bit rustic (as opposed to oppulent); this wine evolved amazingly with airing as it was tight, unrevealing for the first 30 to 45' in the glass.

This note is from a hazy memory, but this was one of the bottles that helped turn us on in a big way to fine wine. Drunk sometime around 2004, at Central Kitchen in Cambridge. I remember being extremely impressed with the sharp green spicy pepper note midpalate that was elegantly tucked into all that dark red deliciousness. Remains one of my/our favorite all time bottles, wish I remembered it better.
