While the rest of the group chose this tonight as their favorite of the '91 LaLa trio, I demurred. It seemed a little blurry. Arguably too tannic for the fruit as well. Got better with air but a third place showing for me.

This is a magnificent as well as powerful vintage of La Mouline that is showing so well now although there is further development ahead. Deep woodsy flavors of campfire char and smoked meats with still vibrant black fruits and great intensity and verve. The finish is a kaleidoscope of complexity with notes of warm asphalt and dark minerals. Really breathtaking and it may still improve from here! 98+

An evening of Rhone (Ponte Vedre Club): Very excited to try this again as the first bottle that we had was a wow wine for me. I'll agree with the owner that this perhaps isn't quite at that same level, but I still think it's drinking really well. It jumps out of the glass, hint of feral, lots of lavender, lots of freshness, bits of darker fruits. Very enjoyable.

Excellent bottle that is in the zone. Smoky dark fruit. Really impressive super smooth texture. Powerful but refined and perfectly balanced. Had next to a bottle of '98 that was great but clearly outclassed by the '91.

From a perfect looking bottle, this wine had a deep red center and oranging rims. The high- intensity nose put forth cherries, minerals, roasted meat, roses, and tan spices.
In the mouth, this wine was rich and ripe with fine-grained, integrated tannin and solid acidity. It was gorgeously textured and came across like Grand Cru Burgundy except the flavor profile was different.
This wine was more refined and less "thick" that I recall my last bottle of this tasting. While it will easily last for ten years, it appeared to be in the zone and ready to drink. Enjoy!

Gaining weight with time, quite clear but lacking some structure. Resolved aged nose and almost transparent clarity. Didn’t really find the mineral profile. 93?

Heavier of dark spice and firm fruit. Floral notes and sweet spice had yet to emerge, but eventually would have on this bottle. '91 still needs a lot more time. 95-96

Tasted blind, this wine had a red/purple center and light red rims. The high intensity nose blasted violets, chocolate, plums, roasted meat, and tan spices.
In the mouth, this wine was rich and ripe with firm acidity and outstanding length. It had a fine grained texture and made the wine feel three dimensional in my mouth.
This wine was coming into its drinking zone and was dramatic and great. It is unclear if it will get better but I wouldn't bet against it. It will also clearly perform, at least, at this level for a decade. A tour de force!

Annual Chicago winos visit - Champagne, White Burg, DRC, La La and SQN (Officina - Washington D.C.): Perfectly mature nose displaying subtle red fruit with a hint of blackfruit, strawberry, raspberry, a hint of dry cherry, sous bois, strong cedar, leather, matsutake, tapenade, roasted nuts and mineral. Fully resolved palate, very finely layered sweet red fruit, silky and polished, bright acidity and strong mineral, and a seamless subtle red fruit driven finish with soy and cedar at the end. It is the softest and most ready of the flight which leads me to guess La Turque. With air, it gains weight and becomes more youthful.

DC/Chicago Wine Dinner Extravaganza (Officina - Wasington, DC): In 1991 single blind La La horizontal...which I got 100% correct! Alluring aromas made me think there was the most Viognier influence here, which led me to think this La Mouline. Complex array of red black fruit with red cherry hints and even more complex spice. So much here with good+ power, very good length and exceptional finesse. My favorite of the horizontal. My wine of the night.

This wine had a deep red/purple center with oranging rims. The high intensity nose showed black cherries, cola, roasted meat, tan spices, and Cuban cigar.
In the mouth, this wine had incredible balance with awesome richness, acidity, and length. The tannins were light and round. It featured flavor intensity without weight. The tannins were barely noticeable and yet the wine was so rich it was almost "chewy".
This is drinking well now after 5+ hours in a decanter. However, there is still a slightly primary edge on top of all that flavor complexity. The only thing that holds it back from a perfect score for me is the slightly rustic nature of the flavors.
This will easily last 10+ years. Wow!

La Tablee: Legends Dinner w E. Guigal & after party (Daniel & SommTime): Part of a horizontal of '91 LaLas. This is just a spectacular wine. I'd say it's not even really in the drinking window yet, although very tasty. Very pretty wine. Lots of animal and floral and there's this flavor right in the middle that I couldn't quite put my finger on but seemed to jump things up another level. Added an extra interest level. Really just beautiful. Love these.

Oh the nose! Dark fruit, roast meat, lavender, and cedar all emerge from the glass, expressive and concentrated. Elegant palate, seemingly weightless, with fine tannins and still-fresh acidity. Finishes long and savory. The 1991 La Mouline is spellbinding. At its peak now but should hold for over a decade. Drink now through 2030.

World's Greatest, Hong Kong - Night II (Garden Suite, Peninsula Hotel): This is the second time in two months this awesome wine has been placed at the end of a marathon dinner, which is certainly a disservice to its detail and elegance. Pretty violets and red cherry but less of anything in the way of scorched earth. Palate is youthful and intense. A particularly lush bottle with dense blue and red berry. Delicious. Solid.

Party at My Place: A particularly fresh and youthful bottle. This showing had more in the way of robust red and black berry fruit than smoked meat and earth (although as Kemo Sabe points out this could be due to the comparison to his '79 in the next glass), although these classic aromas were present to be sure. Whiffs of red rose petals. Youthful and intense but so much aromatic expression and complexity. Consistently great every time but have to imagine there is still sizeable upside on good bottles of this.

Farewell to Phil: Leather, bacon, black licorice, mint and plenty of herbs in the background. Palate is savoury through the mid palate with the fruit showing medium intensity. Lacks a little spark and that magic that you might otherwise expect from La Mouline.

Really smoky and filled with authentic scents and flavors of roasted meats, campfire and dark forest. This bottle is quite mature and open-knit with almost a gritty complexity showing excellent intensity along with notes of violet spice and burnt oak. The finish is so complex and satisfying especially combined with the suckling pig at Nomad, NYC. Thanks David Kovacs!

The intensity of the floral notes really pops here. The fruit is incredibly, ripe, fresh, sweet and pure. There is massive concentration, but the wine feels light, fresh and refreshing. The perfect sting of the spicy, red fruits in the finish remains etched on your palate for either side of 60 seconds! This is truly what great wine is all about!

The co-fermented Viognier is very noticeable, dark red fruits, roasted meats, white pepper, tropical fruit backend, cherry cough syrup. This is very good, but I prefer in this year the 100% Syrah.

Food: Japanese Duration: 5 hours Condition: perfect Aroma: smoke, coffee, licorice, mint, blueberry, espresso, red flower, honey Notes: complexity of the aroma is one of the things I will never forget (and will never get enough of) from a la mouline. The mysterious depth on the nose is a killer and most certainly this is one of the most feminine La Moulines I've had. Before I never would've associated a woman with La Mouline but somehow the 1991 gives me such feeling. More like a woman that you've always liked but was never able to get. The clarify of the aroma was amazing and this remains as one of my favorite wines!

Speechless... What can I say? Off the charts, wild exotic, erotic fruits, incredible, sensuous textures and massive layers of fruit. Intense, long, (we’re talking over 60 seconds), and perhaps 90 seconds, this is a stunner that delivers all the goods and keeps serving them up, long after its left its glass and gone to where it needed to be. Pricey, yes. But for one of the best wines in the world, it's worth the bank, if you can spare it.

Rare Northern Rhone Birthday - 1991: An expressive nose but definitely showing a fair bit of wood. Meaty but also quite dry. Nice bits of smoke throughout. Palate is still excellent but the oak is well pronounced. Not nearly the moving experience the first time around a year ago.

Intense and well structured. Smokey nose with ripe dark fruit, dark organic notes and black earth. Young and vibrant palate with tangy acid and focused fruit. Delivers the notes it has with power and confidence, but does not yet possess waves of complexity. 97+

Guigal La La dinner (Eddie V's): Perhaps the best La La of the evening. Similar concentration level as the 90 La Mouline but seems more youthful and structured. Expressive nose displaying youthful black fruit, crushed blackberry, lavender, a hint of garrigue, truffle and mineral. Exceptional concentration, decadent youthful black fruit driven palate impression, beautifully layered, quite dense yet shows perfect balance, bright acidity and lovely long finish. Although all La las showed very well, I prefer the La Moulines to La Turques in this occasion. My wine of the night.

A part of what I think has been the second greatest trio of related horizontal wines I ever tasted together; the 1991 La Landonne, La Mouline and the La Turque. Part of our dinner series with Heinz. Decanted for about 3 hours. Unfortunately slightly corked so no notes on the nose. Palate very refined, no notable tannins and long peppery finish.

The wine of the night out of an All-Star line up of Guigals. An absolutely magical nose giving off smoking meats, bone marrow, cote de boeuf, bacon, duck fat, and boiling oils in addition to soft red cherries and red rose petals. A developed palate delivering ripe red cherry and strawberry fruit that wouldn't normally indicate a 25-year-old wine if everything weren't in such perfect harmony. Tertiary notes of iron, red soil, and cinnamon present as well. Aromas and tastes of coffee grounds, espresso, and leathers intermittent throughout. Simply beautiful.

It's hard to believe this wine is almost 25 years old, yet it's holding on tight to its youthful vigor. The wine is intense, concentrated, rich and ling, tasting like it was only starting to reveal it's layers of secrets. It's impossible to avoid the layer after layer of rich, sensuously textured fruits, especially with a finish that gets better and better, the longer you let it linger. This is stunning now and it's only going to get better from here, if you can hold off popping a cork on a wine that is this stunning!

Polished, ruby appearance. The aroma leaps at you, with bacon, smoked meat, beef jus, red and black fruits. On the palate, the wine is complex and giving and so sexy. The Viognier really does wonders for the wine, adding a femininity and complexity and a fourth dimension. If I had to pass away tomorrow, I would be asking for a glass of this as my last drink of wine (or maybe the 91 La Turque). What an exciting, other-worldly experience.

4 Days 4 Great Events and lots of Parker Points; 11/14/2014-11/18/2014 (Paris & London): Requires decanting and this is still Young and took a good two hours to develop into the majestic wine this is. On open the wine was a touch overdone, as if it was too ripe with a lactic note on the nose that worried us. But with time it developed , the rich fruit stayed but evolved showing a beautiful roast meat side, smoky edge. On the palate post developing it was rich but balance, great structure and acidity, vibrant yet round tannin and this has all the markings of a future perfect wine and we think it will be at par with the 1983 La Mouline we tried side by side ( Papies 100) in 5yrs or so. Majestic wine.96-97 but with triple digit potential.

If you're seeking perfection in the glass, look no further. The aromatics are intense, the exotic, silky, supple, sensuous, sexy textures are out of this world and the long, concentrated, rich, seemingly, never ending finish goes on and on. Perfect now and perfect in the future, this is as good as it gets.
"Best of the Best" Tasting (Switzerland): Tasted blind, double decanted back into same bottle and out of 0.75 bottle: I am always stunned when I am fortunate enough to have a Guigal in the glass. The color of the wine is much closer to a Pinot than it is to a new world Shiraz. The nose reminds me of ripe raspberry, chocolate yoghurt, in combination with exotic herbs, white pepper, and sweet berries. Elegance combined with sweetness and subtle power. This wine shows so many layers of flavors, is powerful yet very gracious with an enormous length. Just amazing and hard to describe in words. A perfect 100 Points!!! Drink now - 2030.

This will be one tasting note for La Mouline, La Landonne and La Turque 1991. The Mouline is the most brick colored. The Turque the darkest. All three wines have a beautiful, complex and expressive bouquet with rustic smells, beautiful herbs and spices, smoke, bacon etc. The Turque has the most powerful bouquet. The Mouline the most ready and complex and the Landonne the most barnyard and also something not really fresh. On the palate the Mouline is beautifully mature with a great complexity; herbs and spices e.g. clove completely melted tannin and a great length. The Turque is also mature, but is the most powerful. Beautiful garrigue as well and also ripe red and black berry fruits and tannin with still a firm bite. Good bitterness in the finish and still a future of several years. Th Landonne is a sad story; just after opening it showed good acidity and tannin with a firm bite which was a bit drying in the finish, but after a few minutes, with just a little more airtime it became clear the wine really was corked. Overall the Mouline was the most elegant wine and the Turque the most powerful and both great, complex wines with great finesse! No score for La Landonne. I scored the Mouline 97 and the Turque 98.

Kleur: Robijnrood, oranjebruine rand. 50 + Kleur: 5 + Aroma / bouquet: 14 + Smaak / Afdronk: 18 + Algemeen / potentieel: 9 = 96/100

Drank a trio of 91 La La for Christmas dinner. Started with the La Landonne, which had a touch of sour on the finish. A great wine, that on its own would have been a treat. It really responded to air, and developed well over a couple of hours. The La Turque took things to a new level, simply an awesome wine. Total bacon fat, smoke, and very full throttled. The La Mouline presented very similar to the La Turque, very bacon and smoke, with a touch less opulence. All were great, but the La Turque and La Mouline were stunningly good.

If an award is ever offered for the most consistent 100 Pt wine ever made, clearly, 1991 Guigal La Mouline is at the top of the list to receive it. With a nose packed with smoke, flowers, black raspberry, bacon fat. spice, pepper and kirsch liqueur, it's impossible to pull away from the glass. But the real fireworks take place on the palate, with the exotic, sexy, lush, textures and the seemingly, endless, fresh, spicy, cherry finish. This is bottled decadence.

The colour is deep and compact. Almost black. And the fragrance of this wine fill up the room and knock me out! Meaty, bloody and spicy (french herbs). After a while in the decanter the wine offers tobacco, fennel, bouillon and leather ... and even a hint of asphalt. The tannins are peerless! They just melts in the mouth. I find this wine to be in perfect balance. The length is remarkable and goes on for over a minute. It has an inherent energy that amaze me and it create sheer magic on the palate. Great minerality (crushed stone). Great structure, it reminds me of a movie-star back in the days - Sophia Loren. Tall, dark beauty with a remarkable carriage. The taste is meaty, bloody and peppery. And the wine leave salt, leather and tar in the aftertaste. This wine is a star!

Beautiful perfume, powerfully elegant, minty and electric nose but showed too much brett for some in the crowd (i.e., Doug). On the palate this was rich, silky smooth and mature, showing broad, mature fruit that has a nice peppery element. Dense bordering on viscous. On the mid-palate and finish, however, this was a touch clipped, and consistently so across both of the two bottles opened. The nose was simply beautiful... made up for anything else.

The Tenth Annual Stonefields Dinner (Guelph, ON, Canada): The nose opened up to show blue fruit, olive, campfire, high-toned florals and minerals. The palate too was dominated by pure blueberry, subtle bacon fat, an almost crunchy minerality and violets all wrapped in smoke and underbrush. The finish was extremely long, complex and thrilling. An unreal seminal Cote Rotie.

Liquid sex. There is no better way to describe this opulent, decadent, exotic Cote Rotie wine. This is so complex, sensuous and concentrated, it scores off the charts! The perfume explodes from the glass with almost ripe, ripe and fully ripe dark cherry, floral, spice, maple, vanilla and dark berry notes. The wine glides over your palate like oil. The purity of intense, ripe fruit is stunning. The finish is seamless.

Dinner at The Ledbury (London): Always a treat. This seems to be finally drinking in its oak. It started a bit more masculine than I normally expect for a Mouline, but with time it softened considerably. Killer aromatics of smoked meat and blood and a touch of pepper but with the meat as the very dominant element. Very long and powerful palate, caressing, good acidity but maybe just a tad more time in bottle would help deal with all of the raw material.

Totally Over the Top Lunch and Tasting (Tocqueville Restaurant - New York NY): Powerful black fruit aromas with a moderate spice component - mostly black pepper, allspice and rosemary. This has always been among the greatest wines I've ever tasted and last night was no exception. Still quite young with a deep garnet color and wonderful smoky, gamey notes on the nose. Needed a good hour after decanting to start to show its stuff and what incredible stuff! Rich and super-concentrated but silky smooth on the palate so even though the wine is huge, it comes across as balanced and elegant at the same time. The glyceril sappiness in the glass is extraordinary and the flavors of rich black fruits with woodsmoke, leathers and game are incredibly delicious. This gorgeous wine is showing some secondary flavor development but has years to go to reach its apogee. Truly one of the world's top wines in a great vintage 98+

Hard to describe how incredible this wine is. The nose and taste just seems to take me right to the hills where this wine was made. The smells of sweet earth, smoky mist and spices are heady and incredible. And then the wine delivers so fully on the palate with layers of complex flavors of that sweet earth, tobacco smoke, dark fruits, animal fur, roasted meats, etc. Long and plush with a good spine of acidity to freshen up the amazingly complex finish. Will still age for years. As good as anything I've ever tasted and paired beautifully with the Long Island duck at Mas, NYC. Just sneaked past the incredible bottle of '82 Latour we had next!

Casual dinner with great wine in NY: Black fruit with great spice on the nose. Similar fruit profile on palate. Floral charm unfolds with time in the glass, this wine has layers upon layers of flavor and texture. Dense, rich, concentrated, still almost completely primary. Second time I have tried this wine. Wine Guy Weekend Chez Doktas Take 2; 11/7/2008-11/8/2008 (Collingwood, Ontario): Wine Guy Weekend chez DoktaP's: Black cherry, licorice and anise notes permeate the nose with spicy black cherry and a dense but more revealing palate than the La Turque. Lots of stuffing and it shows this is a well built wine for the long haul. Again, it was better on day 2 but also seemed rather closed or in a dumb phase. Still a great drink. Long finish.

Color is dark garnet with a hint of lightening at the rim. Nose shows roasted dark berry, soy, earth, spices, and a hint of iron. On the palate, chewy dark berry, meaty notes, and exotic spice, mingle with well-integrated tannin and acid to make for a formidable, and memorable wine. This is a heavyweight that remains light on its feet.

Simply fantastic. Typical Cote-Rotie. but at its best. In a semi-blind tasting that had such illustrious competitors as Chateau Palmer 98, Chateau Latour 98, Caymus Special Reserve 92 and 98 and Insignia 94, it was voted the favorite.

The array of aromas in the perfume has to be smelled to be believed. Blueberries, sherry, blackberry liqueur, oranges, flowers and pepper was absolutely compelling. I described this wine as “Soul of Syrah, or Essence of Cote Rotie.” The endless layers of fruit that cascade over your palate needs to be experienced by any lover of great wines, let alone a fan of Cote Rote or Guigal.

La La's with Leve in La La Land (Los Angeles, CA): The nose is big with bacon and truffle, love it! The palate though is a little strange with very clear citrus elements, much as if the Viognier is standing clear of the Syrah and isn't really integrated. It was just too orange tasting. The finish shows creamy, somewhat integrated oak.

Dark red. Vitamin pills on the nose. And dairy scents. This might seem bizarre, but my note read; "smells like fresh air". Whatever that means. Strong in the mouth. To begin with, this wine had all the power and a dry fruitiness. But as the wine sat in the glass, it gathered dimension and juiciness. A bit hot on the finish. A wine that should be laid down for another 5-10 years.

Enjoy!

Wow!

Notes: complexity of the aroma is one of the things I will never forget (and will never get enough of) from a la mouline.

A developed palate delivering ripe red cherry and strawberry fruit that wouldn't normally indicate a 25-year-old wine if everything weren't in such perfect harmony.

Beautiful sweet fruit nose amber on the rim as well integrated and complex a mixture of sweet fruit, spice, earthen floor and bacon fat, that I can remember. The finish goes on forever. I believe this win is presently at its apex. Memorable

First time - it was the best Rhone wine I ever had, this one just a shadow behind. I hate when a Rhone wine is WOTN when there are plenty of great Burgs on the table!

Explodes with ripe cherries, intense black fruit and floral notes. Extremely concentrated. Rich and exotic. But, on this night, not quite as complete or complex as the compelling 88. Still, it was a riveting tasting experience.

100 Pt Syrah - SQN and Northern Rhone (Dan and Amanda's Home): Big and fruity. Lots of alcohol on the nose and heat on the finish. Nice, but the 98 La Turque in this flight was my clear winner.

One of my favorite reds. Did this bottle a disservice by serving it at camp dinner and camp fire nearby. Did someone say smokey?

Simply fantastic. Typical Cote-Rotie. but at its best. In a semi-blind tasting that had such illustrious competitors as Chateau Palmer 98, Chateau Latour 98, Caymus Special Reserve 92 and 98 and Insignia 94, it was voted the favorite.

La La's with Leve at Providence (Los Angeles, CA): Another beautiful example of a sexy wine. All the usual elements of smoke, meat and soy. However, this was blown off the table by the La Turque.

Brilliant. The wine took its time opening up. A gorgeous nose of sweet oak and red and black fruits, transitioning with time to the classic aromas of bacon and smoked meats. Sweet on the palate with amazing structure. The wine is approachable now and should drink well for another 10 years.

Dark ruby/burgundy colour. Aromas of bacon fat, smoke, meat, black cherry, spice (cardamom, clove), sage, hickory, bacon, cinnamon, rosemary, Topps baseball card bubble gum. Full-bodied, with perfectly integrated tannins. Layer after layer of complexity in the wine that continues to build over time and is seamless from the nose through to the long, long, 60+ second finish. Best wine I've ever had.

Dark red with visibly clear browning at the rim. There was a gorgeous scent of freshly roasted coffee coming out of the glass. A large-bodied, well-structured wine with impeccable balance and a flamboyant style. Very long in the aftertaste. Superb.
