A big disappointment. Virtually no flavour, and certainly no Savennieres character. If it had been sealed with a cork I would probably have guessed it was corked and the aromas robbed. But it's screwcap. Hmmm... I could be kind and class it as flawed, but the last time I opened a bottle it was similarly boring, so it's not an individual faulty bottle. Not undrinkable, but really one of the most boring wines I've ever encountered. So we didn't drink it!

I opened this after two oxidized bolts of Loire Chenin. I was feeling down, I was a bit skeptical, but this came through: citrus and a bit of petrol with weight and depth. This might be on its downward slope, but it is still fantastic. thedrunkencyclist.com

Had this last week. Didn't take notes, but I thought this was outstanding. The 2003 vintage effect seemed to have no effect on this bottle. It was a wild ride of intense minerality with a very long finish. More minerality than fruit for sure, but it was very well balanced and ready to drink. But this will last a long time if this bottle is anything to go by. Unfortunately, this was my last bottle (A-).

Under Stelvin. I picked these up from the PLCB a few years ago, and this is the third bottle we have twisted open. I do not know if there is any wine that has a characteristically better nose than an aged Savennières, and this seems to have a few years at least to go. tons of tree fruit here: peach, pear, apple. More subdued on the palate, but vibrant acidity, subtle fruit, and a killer finish that last for minutes.... Outstanding. thedrunkencyclist.com

I am a huge fan of Chenin Blanc from the Loire, especially when they have some age on it. 2003 was a tough year due to the heat, so I was a bit worried that this might be lacking in acidity. No need to worry. In fact, it is more lacking in fruit--a bit austere. But great Chenin flavors of melon and grapefruit. Very long finish. Outstanding. thedrunkencyclist.com

Crisp, citrusy, flavors lean toward apple and pear. A bit tart on the finish. Still seems very young, but I think the fruit will outlast the acidity. Decanted for two hours and could have used more. I prefer my whites at room temperature, but I liked this better with a slight chill. Drink or hold.

Enjoyed with a trio of fish and Dave & Carly. Pungent nose with hints of petrol under the wax and wool. This had great balance and still plenty of fruit for the acidity to drive along. Last bottle of the 6 I bought - bye bye :-(

Donated for a outdoor summer reception for Boston Children's Theatre at the Patton Farm in Hamilton, MA. The wine was a big hit. Have purchased 24 cases of this wine over the last 6 years and have used it and/or donated it for parties, receptions, and charitable events. Don't let the expert reviews fool you on their review of this 2003 vintage. This wine has plenty of acidity, minerality, and fruit. When it was young it may have been masked. However this wine is drinking extremely well and has improved with age. I have had many vintages of Savennières from 1986 on. Baumard has produced a real sleeper in the 2003 Clos du Papillon.

Not as closed as the last time I had this over a year ago- the palate now matches the honey/lanolin aroma. Plenty of ripeness as expected from the vintage, but no heat, and plenty of acidity. My best bottle yet.

Pale bleak yellow. The nose full of honey drops, also reminds me of the old dusty attic at my grandma's place. Also wet grass and some wet wool. Very frail, yet delicate and elegant.
The taste silky but with a fulsome mouthfeel. Healthy acidity, long taste.
Light and wonderful.

Very mineral and tightly wound. Would have expected it to have opened out a bit more since my last bottle a couple of years ago, but no. I honestly can't rate this very highly - though usually I love this appelation and this should be a great example.

This wine has really improved since I had it 2 1/2 years ago. Day 1 the nose was tight with citrus, apples and minerals. Palate was medium-bodied with plenty minerality, balanced fruit (lemon and fruit cocktail) and good acidity for the vintage. Still a little bitterness on the finish. Day 2 a honeyed aspect was added to the nose and palate which took the wine to another level. The minerality and acidity remained and the bitterness on the finish was gone. This still has plenty of life ahead of it, or if you open it now give it plenty of air.

Had this at Thanksgiving Part II. Yummers. Not over-ripe 2003 at all. Don't hesitate to buy this because of the vintage. I know this was not stored in ideal conditions, yet the stelvin closure really held this wine together (aka please open/decant this wine early!). Muted upon opening, light, dense lemon/apple tartness, minerals for days. On day two, it was much better, still linear yet the electricity was out in full force. Lightly wooly/funk I expect from this wine, plus a more tart chenin-apple/honey on the finish with a bit of spice. A very chewy wine, I wanted to bite it. Mmm.

Bought this several years ago, decided to try a bottle with Sunday dinner of chicken pot pie. Probably the most sturdy Stelvin closure I've ever encountered- it was actually pretty hard to get off. The threads of the closure seemed to be plastic rather than simple metal. The wine was almost clear in color, with a faint yellow hue. The nose opened with warming, an exotic combo of fruit cocktail and fallen apples. This wine is an example of why I often find white wine tasting so gratifying- the flavor of this wine was quite austere in contrast to the rich nose- like stones flavored with a fruit extract. Really nice wine with plenty of potential- a lousy food paring that was more driven by my desire to try this than any feeling that the combo would be good.

Solid structure but so young. The nose came around after 1-2 hours of aeration with sweet pear and apple notes. Lovely oily texture in the mouth with low acidity but not cloying. The lack of acidity may be related to the vintage so not sure if I'd keep this wine too long but will develop at least over the next 3-4 years. Medium long finish.

Light yellow-green. Light nose of fresh rainwater, seashell, hint of green apple. On the palate it is medium bodied with a very rich, intense mid-palate with melon, apple, citrus skin. The finish is slightly bitter and warm, the length medium-long. Lacks some minerality but very balanced and packed with flavour. Typical for Chenin there's more on the palate than the nose at this stage but I think the nose will catch up.

Pleasant surprise for the vintage! Has an almost (white) Northern Rhône nutty aroma albeit a gentle version. Medium to full bodied with decent length and acidity and by no means the 2003 fruit bomb I was anticipating. I'm a great fan of Vouvray and despite not finding the lanolin and peach back I love so much in this Chenin (my only experiences with Savennièrs being this and a 1999 of the same - quite extreme vintages!), very classy and I'm picking up some Clos Saint Yves 2005 over the weekend to explore this appellation some more. Thumbs up to Baumard for the screwcap, now if only the rest world would follow the French example and move from the pharmaceutical looking version on those bottles of NZ Sauvignon to the sleeker/more sightly version on this bottle.

Tasting at Domaine Baumard with Florent Baumard. Light green in the glass. More open than the straight '03 Savennieres at this point and also a lighter, more elgant style. Long, dry and acidic on the finish. 50+12+11+8+7.5 = 88.5

I loved the '02. I was concerned the '03 would have too much concentration and alcohol, too little minerality and acidity. No worries. This is another beautiful, balanced Baumard. Not as crisp as the '02; the fruit is a little fuller. Citrus, scant floral and tropical notes dance with wet rocks. Long finish. This wine is enjoyable today and will be for years to come.
