A still fresh and floral nose, with honeysuckle, pear passionfruit, kaffir lime, petrol and slate. there's hints at maturity, yet it remains incredibly fresh. Intense, yet lithe, beautifully detailed and mouthwateringly fresh. this dances on the palate with a fantastic balance of soil, RS, acid and fruit. A distillation of Wehlener Sonnenuhr. Effortlessly gorgeous. I can’t ask much more from Kabinett (or any wine really). Fantastic. At peak with tons of time in hand.

Crumbly cork, mature but still vibrant with mouthwatering citrusy acidity, honey citrus nose, excellent depth and endless length. Lovely. 93-94. One sip demands another. Great wine. Brilliant.

I joined some friends for a Rhone tasting at lunch a few days ago and I decided to bring this as an opener wine for the group. This ended up being one of the stars of the whole thing. An absolutely brilliant bottle that was in spectacular condition and in that perfect place where youth and maturity meet. Wonderfully resolved and complete with notes of ripe white peaches and nectarines, sweet herbs and crystallized minerals. It had prickly acidity in the most delightful and delicious way. I was honestly a little shocked how gorgeously fresh this wine was. At 22 years old, I can’t imagine a better time to drink this special wine from this special producer. in an instant, this took me back and reminded me why I fell in love with Riesling 20 years ago and why this was the producer that I have to thank for that. I went on with my day with a permanent smile and I couldn’t be happier to have more in my cellar. Sometimes wines just stick with you and you can’t shake that magic you felt when tasting it, this is one of those wines for me.
A crumbly cork was about the only thing here to criticize. It fell to pieces. After the cork particles were filtered out the wine was topaz with flecks of gold and green. Dried fruits and citrus juice on the palate. Fully alive and companionable.

(Tasting with Friends) A surprise, given my notes of this wine when tasted last year. Although fully mature and heading downhill, this still had some of the sparkle of its youth. Apricots and peaches on the palate, with a petrol streak and a plethora of minerals. A very quiet bouquet and a touch too sweet in the finish. The fave of our white wine taster. Our last bottle.

A little mustiness (from a slightly soft cork?) at first that blew off after an hour or so, to reveal a very pretty nose of honeysuckle, bright honey, grapefruit, some herbal notes. A late has just a hint of sweetness, more of a silky texture I associate with slightly sweet wines, otherwise more lemony honey leading to a long tart mouth watering finish. Excellent balance. I think my preference for Kabinett is a bit younger but this has developed quite well.

Wow, 20 year old kabinett that is drinking like it was bottled yesterday (minus the SO2 and gold color). A honey-soaked orchard fruit nose with flavors of golden delicious apples, minerals, and keffir lime, and just the right amount of acidity. A quaffer.

19 years has been very good for this Kabinett. Absolutely gorgeous honeyed nose of lime, pear. Rough edges have softened and it’s a mouthful of pleasure. Only slight perceived sweetness on the well balanced palate. Delicious.

Radiant gold in the glass with petrol and lemon zest notes in the bouquet. In decline, as seen in the loss of the bracing zestiness of previous bottles. The result is a sweeter delivery without the acidity to pull it back from the edge. Cellar stored since release. Pass.

Slate, kaffir lime leaves, asian pear and floral on the nose. A fantastic nose of Middle Mosel blue slate. On the palate, this is laser sharp and clean with the RS fading some behind the brilliant slate, florals, and acid. Light weighted with a gracefulness and lift that is rare today. I really like Salil's choice of the term intensity. Intensity without any weight. With time the floral and mineral inflected notes come to the fore, with the RS and fruit playing a beautiful backup role. To steal a term a true soil to glass transfer wine. Like licking blue slate. An effortlessly beautiful wine without artifice. Drunk with pork Milanese and a fennel salad, it was honestly one of the best wine pairings I have experienced in a year or more. Drinking at peak with tons of time in hand. Fantastic kabinett.

Brilliant, classic Kabinett. True to its pradikat with a sense of near-weightlessness, yet amazing intensity of flavour. Still quite youthful with the fruit very fresh and just the beginning of development, but this is already amazing.

Amazing petrol, bright and fresh nose with lovely sweet & acidic notes...intense herbs! The nose on this wine is simply amazing, and overshadows the palate currently - which is not to take away from the palate but the nose has elements of Chartreuse verte VEP in its complexity and herbal notes.

From good though not glacial storage, this was thrilling wine that was in the early stages of maturity with years and years to go. Brilliant acidity, lemon and apple fruit and distinct, salty minerality on the finish made for a complete, benchmark Kabinett. Drink now and for twenty years or more. This had the balance to be immortal.

Wow - what more can you say? The greatest white wine value ever? That mature color has a golden edge. That perfect tart apple and spice profile on the nose excites the senses. The inherent minerality adds gravitas. The palate is simply stunning. Ripe fruit, balancing slate and supporting structure make a complete wine that neither wants or needs anything. I wish I had 50 cases of this elixir to drink over the next 20 years. (95)

Cork came apart upon opening so decanted through filter - still showed fizziness and so a bit cloudy - but totally delicious and vibrant. Frankly, probably WOTN, despite being followed by very good 2001 CFE 375th Anniversary, 1999 Grivot Boudots, 1999 Chevillon Cailles, and a half bottle of 1986 Climens, all of which were purchased by me upon release and properly stored (and all of which showed well, although CFE very tight despite an hour in decanter and both burgs still a bit too young/closed; Climens totally ready to go, however).

Excell3nt balance. Drinking young almost, so snappy and zippy. Sweeter than I would have thought and like no alcohol on this guy. Have with Thai food and watch the bottle disappear before your eyes.

It's nearly 15 years post-vintage, and this is the first bottle of the Wehlener Sonnenuhr Kabinett that I have opened from my own stash since just after release. The first thing to note is that the wine is not close to fully mature. The burnished/smoky tones that signify full development have barely made any appearance. In fact this is still more primary/fruity than anything else. The fruit is lovely, mixing peach, apple skin and pineapple tones that cover a bright, mineral base. Balance is excellent, and there is plenty of depth through the mid-palate and finish, indicating that there is long, effortless aging potential here. I could likely bury my remaining bottles for 15 more years and end up with a perfectly mature and magnificent bottle. Right now it's merely outstanding.

Drinking just great. Golden in color. The nose is clean. No petrol but lots of wet stones and slight citrus fruit. Full bodied. Slightly sweet. Good acidity. Nice complexity and depth. Long finish. At 15 years from vintage, this has a long life ahead. Gorgeous wine.

Entering a mature phase with years and years of life. Inflection of petrol, great acid, mélange of peach and related fruits, a bit of spritz keeps this lively, but is the spritz supposed to be there at this phase of its development? I think I preferred my last bottle

AP #26-02. Dinner at Bonefish with Mom. I wanted to open an '01 to see how they were developing. I have an abundance of '01 Prum but have not had one for at least 5-8 years as I feel they will be true classics given the proper aging. Kabinett seemed the right place to start. Surprisingly spritzy for a 14 year old wine, even Prum. Classic Sonnenuhr aromas jump out of the glass. Still tasting young but beginning to develop. Seems like more time will give these '01s the inner mouth glow of burnished fruit that the '90s are currently experiencing. 50+14+13+8.5+8.5=94

Lots of green melon fruit, lots of grass and flowers. Burst of sweet fruit up front, but not especially concentrated. With lots of extract and acid, there's not quite enough concentration to buffer the structure, and it's a little tart and drying on the finish. Not bad, but a little disappointing given the 01 Prum pedigree here. Representative?

Riesling rendezvous (Bern, Switzerland): Lots of sulphur and spritz. Really mineral and aggressively youthful. A true Kabinett now that all of the baby fat is gone. It comes across as austere and masculine next to the much more delicate Willi Schaefer.

Nicely restrained kab. Still has a nice light fruit profile but some aging characteristics are starting to show. Pretty tasty now but I think it has a bit of upside in it yet - I look forward to following this. Consumed at lunch at Little Bird with ob2s, and it was a nice pairing with their lighter foods.

I believe there to be certain vintage / winery combinations that produce magic. Prum and 2001 are one of those combinations. From the gold cap Auslese to this beauty, every time I taste an '01 Prum, I am simply in heaven. Lovely golden color that gives way to waves and waves of liquid pear, white flowers and grape skin aromas. Drinking perfectly today after a hard decant - lovely extract, juicy acidity and noble mouth feel. True Kabinett as the finishing impression is dry though there is lovely sweetness throughout. Great wine. (95)

Haven't had this in years and popped one Thanksgiving and poured off a half bottle that wasn't consumed into a 375 and am having that this evening. Still going strong for a Kabinett level wine. Delicate nose. Restrained. Apricots and floral scents. Soft in the mouth with enough acidity to interest. Finishes is moderate length.

Achingly pure. Weight of water. Intense palate that seems almost Spatlese, but there's a weightless energy. Tension! Lime, apple, slate, maybe some raw mango skin. Great length. Needs time and air and both.

Wow. Not a sign of age in the slightest, except for MAYbe a slight dip in acid. Tastes like a basic Spaetlese from a fairly ripe but average vintage. Where it lacks precision it makes it up in pure chutzpah. The only surprise was no trapped CO2, and not boechsle/SO2 aromas. Yay!

Prum Wehlener Sonnenhur Dinner (Peach Farm, Chinatown, Boston): Typical 2001 with very good acidity balancing excellent ripeness, meets typical Prum ethereal loveliness. As Albert pointed out, not a classic Kab (the 98 came closest to that) but nonetheless somehow light on its feet despite it all. The future is bright, though drinking well now. My favorite of the flight.

Med to med deep golden yellow - seductive nose of yellow fruits accented by minerals and a faint whiff of kerosene and honey overtones - palate is light bodied, just ever-so-slightly sweet, then ripe grapefruit, sweet Meyer lemon, then a dry minerally finish - not really a Wow wine at first, but after a few sips you realize you are drinking a near perfect example of what a great Kabinett is meant to be, and it is extremely satisfying - the balance is utterly exquisite.

Drinking reaaly well right now, decanted and gave it some air and didn't get any sulfur/leesy-ness or spritz. Round and well-integrated, just getting some secondary aromatics, plenty of ripe fruit and a really nice clean finish.

Light golden color. The nose is consistent with previous bottles - petrol, lemon/lime, and white flowers. In the mouth, there is ample density with a lime-aid note deftly blended with petrol and slate. There is zippy acidity in this off-dry wine. The finish is long and packed with the essence of riesling. Overall, this wine continues to be a wonderful example of a great kabinett in a great vintage, and it paired beautifully with an Easter ham.

On day one still some sulfur and spritz. this blew off by the end of the first day. A racy nose, very fresh with green apples, lime, mineral, just the tiniest hint of petrol, and a whole lot of Wehlener Sonnenuhr. Bright and incredibly clean and fresh on the palate. Really mouthwatering acid and slate-stoniness. More clean fruit, acid, and slate on the palate. This is terribly pure, focused, and clean. Delicacy and power all rolled into one. Leaves you wanting more. Better on day 4 than day one. Beautiful. At peak and in no risk of going down soon. 92 pts.

Light yellow color with some spritz. The nose begins with kerosene, apple and limes. In the mouth, there is limeaid, kerosene, Granny Smith apple, and minerals. The acidity keeps everything in balance with the fruit, and the finish is quite long. Overall, this is a real beauty of an off-dry wine with good fruit and solid acidity, even at 9 years of age.

Lovely light gold; delicate nose with green apples and lime and a nice whiff of diesel; apples and limes on the palate as well, leading to a medium length finish tinged with minerality. Very pretty wine! (which was awesome with Daniel Boulud's chestnut soup).

Rosh Hashanah dinner (Seattle, WA, USA): This was the first Riesling than rocked my world, and it is always stellar. Edgy, tense, refreshing Kabinett. Moving more towards salt than it did three years ago. No real diesel in play. Just pure, crystalline acidity. Still plenty of fruit, maybe still a bit reticent. With 6 down and 8 to go I think I am going to star slurping these more regularly.

This Kabinett has finally entered maturity and lost its baby fat. The green grapiness has bee replaced by the scent of wet grass and parsley with the faintest hint of kerosene. Viscous, rich in Kabinett terms and the acidity that must heve been there all along is now clearly in evidence to balance the modest sweetness. Really quite an impressive example.

There’s a lot going on here. More than any $16 investment should ever offer. But it does. In droves and exponents. A citrus, apple, and mineral zing. A lightness that defies the intensity of flavor. A crazy verve that keeps the entire mouth on alert. A total delicious pleasure that makes me pretty sure that right now luck and its spoils are on my side…

This is getting seriously good and may have entered its stage of ideal drinking. Intense core of minerally but fruity riesling, not too sweet, not too dry. It lingers much longer than the usual Kabinett, even from JJ Prum, even from this vineyard. Excellent.

-- decanted immediately before tasting -- -- tasted non-blind over 3-4 hours --
NOSE: beautiful floral/perfumy bouquet of golden delicious apples and old-canvas-tent type of petrol; the petrol was light, but noticeable; hints of butterscotch, strawberry-mango, and mint fleshed out the complex bouquet.
BODY: tan-yellow color; medium bodied.
TASTE: immediately after opening this wine displayed piercing acidity and a surprising dryness, but the acid calmed down and the sugar came forward with additional air; a tad sulfury; a bit of a hole in the mid-palate; a true Kabinett; pleasing lime zest and spice flavors; 8.5% alc.; finish was approx. 30 sec. in length. If this would have delivered on the palate the way it did with its bouquet, this would have been a knock-out ... as it is, this is a very solid Kabinett, but not truly memorable.

Light, yellow color with kerosene and apple on the nose. The palate follows the nose with kerosene, minerals, and green apple. There is some spritz initially, but it is giving very little in the mouth. I will be eager to see how this changes with air. After four hours, this has changed for the better - less kerosene, more mineral, limes, green apple, and pear. The perfectly balanced acidity cleanses the palate and leaves the taster wanting more. I really enjoy this and look forward to tasting it over the next 10 years.

Now I am beginning to see what is all the fuss about the 2001 vintage. This beauty was the most viscous Kabinett I have ever tasted and the concentration and intensity were amazing. Crammed with grapey riesling fruit. Still a bit of gas but no sulfur. Sweet for a Kabinett - could this have been declassified Spatlese? Delicious. I can't see this getting any more aromatic, complex or better.

The JJ Prum signature of an initial blast of sulfur and a few bubbles in the wine was still there, even after a several years in the bottle. There is a definite mineral (? slate) character that is unusually dominat at this point making much different than the usual green apple/kiwi/lime character of most of the Weheler Sonnenuhrs I have tasted over the years. While definitely interesting, it was a little more difficult getting through the bottle than usual. Just off dry. The evolution will be interesting to follow.

Tasted from a bottle that was a bit of a leaker. I wasn't intending to open this for a while, but once I saw the leak I figured I may as well kill it off. Mmm, loads of mineral funk on this one. Although this wine was not showing everything it had, it was in excellent bottle that has many years ahead of it. One the nose, it displays some apple and pear with a touch of slate. The flavor profile is off-dry with lemon-lime, pear, and minerals intertwined with precise acidity and Spatlese weight. The finish a well-integrated tapestry of fruit, sugar, and refreshing acidity.

Very, very spritzy upon opening, with some sulfur as expected. Decanted, then poured back into bottle to cool. Within an hour the bubbles and sulfur were gone, leaving a very pale clear gold wine in the glass, which seems just a touch darker than I recall from a year ago. Nose was a little muted but still showing minerals and vaguely honeyed white fruit. Great palate presence, round and smooth, excellent sugar/acid balance; minerals, green apple and pear, hints of smokey petrol. Delicious, and I'm happy to have several more bottles to check in on over the next few years.

Wow, big mistake to open this right now - the wine has really shut down from a year ago. It is still delicious - it just lacks the glorious primary fruit of its youth, while the pedigree of the site and the secondary nuances of maturity have not yet emerged. A touch of sulfur remains upon opening; the minerality is there, but the fruit/sugar/acid balance is currently out of whack. Don't touch another for couple years at least. 88? pts. now, projected 91-93.

Seattle Tasting Group does German Riesling (Issaquah, WA, USA): AP No. 2 576 511 26 02. The nose on this was very distinct compared to the other two wines with a lot of sulphur but also talc, and a very slatey, mineral driven explosion of smells. On the palate this is gorgeous with impeccable balance between the vibrant acidity and the sugary sweetness. There is also remarkable minerality and bright, red fruit. The finish is very long and impeccably balanced. This is the fourth bottle I have had of this wine, and it continues to deliver the goods every single time. Awesome!

Initially on opening (and decanting) the nose and palate of this wine was quite muted. I was concerned that it was mildly corked. Now after nearly 4 hours open, the wine has opened. The nose is still soft with honeysuckle and talc. Soft balanced palate with just the right mix of sugar and acid. Amazingly pleasant to drink. My father, the avowed sweet wine hater, loved it. Tastes of candied lemons, honey, honeydew, and minerals. Nearly endless finish. Ready to drink now with some air.

Wow, this wine is such a sugar and acid bomb, I can't get enough! Some sulphur on the nose (I am very 'dumb' to sulphur so even on a young Prum I barely notice it) along with lemon and wet slate. On the palate this is explosive, incredible sweetness for a Kabinett, amazingly vibrant acidity with a lemon custard smoothness. The finish is long, tart and delicious. I have another half bottle that I look forward to trying tomorrow once it has had a chance to breathe and settle down. (DAY 2) This has really settled down, and the nose is now dominated by talc, mineral and some lemon. On the palate this is much less sugary and shows much more minerality and overall much better balance. Wow, what difference a day makes. This is a simply terrific Kabinett.

BODY: tan-yellow color; medium bodied.
TASTE: immediately after opening this wine displayed piercing acidity and a surprising dryness, but the acid calmed down and the sugar came forward with additional air; a tad sulfury; a bit of a hole in the mid-palate; a true Kabinett; pleasing lime zest and spice flavors; 8.5% alc.; finish was approx. 30 sec. in length. No formal notes but this was really in a vibrant and robust spot in its evolution. Loads of fresh acidity made this a great pairing for dinner. Looking forward to a few more bottles if they are all as good as this one.

No formal notes, but do recall that petrol/motor oil note on the nose, with a nice, coating mouthfeel of tropical yellow fruit, kiwi, yellow citrus, pineapple, amazing balance and a medium-long finish. 93+

Dave Bueker's 2001 Riesling tasting. Delicious, pure expression of middle Mosel. Probably Spatlese level must, but well within what passes for kabinett profile these days. No sulfur, drinking well now and likely for 15 years.

A stunning bottle from J.J. Prum. No formal notes, but I do recall lots of petrol on the nose, with a mouth of peaches, grapefruit, and some second tier flavors of pineapple, apricot even and third tier flavors of white peach. Amazingly luscious mouthfeel and a long, lingering finish. Outstanding bottle, stunning QPR.

Drank at Cru in NYC – opened, poured into a decanter, and drank over one hour. Refreshing nose of apricot and pineapple. Light and somewhat tight flavours of pineapple. Smooth and balanced and not too sweet.

Tasted from a bottle that was a bit of a leaker. I wasn't intending to open this for a while, but once I saw the leak I figured I may as well kill it off. Mmm, loads of mineral funk on this one. It has burned off a lot of fat since I first tasted it 3 years ago and is starting to feel more like a Kabinett. Amazing minerality, precision and cut. I have half a bottle that I need to revisit.

Nose and to a lesser degree the taste is much affected by sulphur today. No CO2 in this bottle. Tremendous potential, but patience is warranted. Apple, pear, and mineral flavors; perfect amount of crystalline sweetness provides a rich mouthfeel.

Lovely wine. Quite spritzy when poured but this soon goes away. Very bright. Very typical nose, just beginning to get some maturity, apple and pear fruit is nuanced by petrol and floral hints. Noticeable sweetness, but crisp apple and pear fruit. Well balanced - finish lasts for a long time. Excellent.

AP No. 2 576 511 26 02. What a wonderfull wine. Much richer than most kabs and much better than the last one of these I had 6 months ago. Don't chill it too much. It is better closer to room temp than fridge temp. Still some spritz that blows off very quickly with a few swirls.

Wow, this stuff is amazing! The acidity on this wine is so stunning, and coupled with the sugar it creates the ultimate sweet & sour experience. This is probably the best Riesling I have ever tasted. The nose is still fairly reserved, but on the palate this is stunning, tropical, and exotic! (Day 2) This is still going strong, now with a banana and creamy custard elements. This has only opened up more. Amazing Riesling!
