  • Enjoyable, but on the edge of brutally tannic. Smoky nose, some alcohol. Eucalyptus, smoke and olive flavors. Complex. Good, but so austere, it wouldn’t win many friends. I wonder what this would be like in 20 more years?

  • Rustic and smoky, beautifully mature bouquet. On the palate dark berries and beautiful acidity. Someone mentioned ink with bacon ;-) and that covers it as well. Beautiful acidity and a great length. The wine is fully mature now and beautiful and elegant.

  • Much brighter on the nose than before, with red cherry dominating the herbs and forest fruits, but the big change is the taste: it has at last calmed down and become civilised. The rather overwhelming power is under control now, leaving brighter, fresher fruit and far more finesse and elegance. Red cherry and redcurrant hit first, before a cool blackcurrant mlddle section, just a little feral to remind you that it’s a Madiran, then a very long, effortlessly classy finish.
Everything is more balanced than before, especially the ABV - 14% but it no longer shows at all.
I admired rather than liked this before, seeing the potential but finding it hard work to actually enjoy, but now I love it.
Great stuff with a long plateau ahead - like a top Pessac at half the price

  • EEE 20230201 - Stevig rood; 2/1/2023-2/2/2023: Roodbruin.

  • Smoky bouquet with laurel and black olives. On the palate dark berries, dark chocolate, oak, vanilla, good acidity and tannin. Good complexity, but no impressive finesse. I think some improvements in the future are possible, but I am not sure.

  • The 2000 Montus Madiran Prestige is a quirky wine, showing an aromatic nose of dried black fruit, worn leather, and woody nuances. Unsurprisingly, still tannic on the palate, though more than manageable with beef. The natural fullness on the palate keeps this round and velvety rather than grating. The fruit seems to be drying out slightly on the palate, so I’d be inclined to drink rather than hold.

  • Great full bodied wine with smooth tannins after some time. Decanted for 1.5 hours. Lots of dark fruit but also some red fruit notes hidden. Some oak and dark cassis. Deep purple color.

  • During a Zoom-tasting I hosted.

An absolutely perfect bottle of this. Deep dark purple color with just a touch of age starting to show. Explosive notes of dark berries, cassis, some red fruit too, cedar wood, cigar box, tobacco leaf, leather, also a touch of barnyard, spices, graphite and smoke. It’s full-bodied, dense and powerful, with high but excellent tannin, some medium-high acidity and excellent mid-palate persistence. A superb Montus Prestige and one of the real classics of the wine world. Timeless, classy, a real grand gentleman.

  • At first, no change from the last time I opened one - dark cherry and herbs on the nose, slowly developing into a blend of juniper berry, forest fruits and a brighter red cherry. Powerful waves of dark cherry, blackberry and redcurrant, showing much more class and finesse than the Bouscassé VV I tried recently, but slightly muted, with a finale that doesn't reach the heights I expected. This needs time still but when it hits full maturity will be excellent.

90-91 pts

  • Odette Dinner (Singapore): The black fruit core is showing fruit development (dried blackberry, dried black plum), supported by notes of pungent spice (black pepper) and bottle age characters (earth, potting soil, orange rind, coffee, mushroom). This is the first wine with some reasonable tannin structure: medium level, ripe and round in nature. Interesting wine. I'm sure if I had more time with it multiple layers would be revealed. Enjoyable.

Magnifique. A son apogée.

  • Weekly tasting group RWP #286: Six pairs fully blind for my guests (@ My place): Not so many notes this time. In the bouquet dark berries and sweet spices. On the palate dark berries, licorice, a firm amount of sweetness and acidity. Better than expected. Ready now and the next 3 - 4+ years.

  • I opened this 12 hours in advance, to give a good Audouzing, but it wasn't actually enough. It took a further three hours in the glass to open up. At first, the wine was clammed tightly shut. The body and breadth were there, but it was like comparing the Massif Central to the Pyrenees of the Berthoumieu. Then it began to reveal itself, with power and majesty: at first, still only hints of dark cherry and herbs on the nose, slowly developing into a blend of juniper berry, forest fruits and a brighter red cherry. In the mouth, the peaks begin slowly but with much more power than the Berthoumieu, tried alongside. Whilst the latter is like the Pyrenees, the Montus is the Alps.
Massive waves of deep, powerful fruit hit the palate, one after the other, each reaching higher than the last, beginning with dark cherry, followed by blackberry, then a wave of raspberry liqueur before a finale combing the whole lot. This is still a baby which needs at least another five years but which will probably become the finest Madiran I have ever tasted.
For now, this deserves 94 points but in the future, probably more. All that for 22 euros (and sold at auction for 30 euros this week).

  • Deep rusty red colour. Blackberries and dark plums on the nose with hints of spices and leather on the nose. Taste of blackberries, dark plums, black pepper and leather. Silky tannins with chocolate and coffee in the finish. A great and complex wine that shows the potential of the Madiran wines. Goes well with beef or game.

  • There was a lot of reduction on the nose as well as on the palate - burned rubber and farmyard, so aeration is the must. After the aeration aromas of dark berries and chocolate arose, but burned rubber note wasn't gone completely. Not the best vintage of Cuvée Prestige.

  • Monthly Tasting Group EEE #057 : A random set (@ My place): Rustic bouquet with some barnyard, cassis smoke and green bell pepper impressions in the bouqut. On the palate firm and good acidity, dark forest fruits, the tannin is still a bit sticky. There is vanilla and a hint of eucalyptus as well. Concentrated and full bodied wine. Much better than the previous bottle I drank. Good future of several years.

  • Currant and licorice, nice fruit but ferocious tannin. It needs time or cassoulet.

Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Comment

  • In the bouquet dark forest fruits, earth and forest floor and autumn impressions. On the palate dark forest fruits, a firm amount of acidity, vanilla and tannin. In this stage there is not much finesse in the wine. It is still very backward and not showing much complexity.

  • Too young. Also, needs a lot of time once opened. Full of red and black fruit, slightly cooked. Orange peel, brandy (maybe alcohol out of balance). Chocolate, coffee etc etc etc... just feel it would be better in 5 years, but very good still

  • Followed for some three hours. Nose of plums, cherries (fresh, black), blood orange, cognac, and a little animal notes (yeah, horse dung). Palate brings leaf litter, mint, eucalyptus, tobacco, coffee, cedar wood and saline minerality. Like Oz Shiraz meeting merlot in Bordeaux. Quite a bit of maturity but still somewhat closed.

  • Carafe 3 heures.

  • Opened my last bottle today. Too bad, its still in early development, especially compared to my 2002s, which are at the peak. Dark color, no hint of oxidation. Smell of cedarwood, nice acidity and still present tannins. Dark fruit, some juniper berry smell, a little tobacco? Not very long. Great wine, shoult have purchased more. Had it with cheese plate, including Gryuere, Sbrinz, Vacherin Mont d' Or, Brie de Meaux, st. Albray and St. Maure.

  • Feels like a left bank bordeaux. Nose has lots of dark fruit (and some blue), lead pencil, under-bush and spices. In the mouth there is superb balance and grainy tannins with sensations reflecting the smell. The fruit has a nice juicy feeling and there is a long long aftertaste. Fantastic wine. Clearly at its prime!

  • 13,5% d'alcool

91+ pts

  • Farmlike, earthy and barnyard. Good to see this is still very much alive. This shows the excellence of tannat, not great but very enjoyable.

  • A nice way to end a meal with rustic cheese or a compatible dessert. Tannat aged well and a somewhat smooth (for this grape) delivery of dark smokey leather, blackberry and dark cherry. Not complex at all and a very narrow sense as it flows past the palate, but well made and worth the expedition as a nice detour from the usual suspects .

  • If you love Madiran, this is definitely for you! Almost perfectly mature and a great expression.

    Dark, dark red wine.
A nose that is full of Bordeaux handles: with its earthy notes, barrel use and beautiful fruit. Would work well as a ringer in a Bordeaux tasting.
On the palate, it is a rich, well concentrated maturing wine with a restrained pose from mature and maturing M+++ tannins. Acids M++ and creating a fine structure. Balanced and rustic wine with a slightly underwhelming mid-palate but great finish that includes burned soil, dark fruits and well integrated oak.
    Fantastic marriage with fois gras.
Only btl, will evolve some more and stay strong for at least 7 more years.
Madiran is a district wifey rarely enjoys. She finds them thin and acidic in a frustrating fashion. 82p this time, but she really loved its nose!

  • Some menthol, rubber on black and blueberries..
Bright and somewhat tight tannic action but explosive in taste. The same nose profiles with a finish that lingers on black fruit and spices.
Very good(but I had better years)

  • This is a nice bottle of Bordeaux, 2 of the 3 drinkers liked it better than the 89 Chateau Branaire we drank with it, although I preferred the older wine which had more complexity. This wine has a lot of depth and the oak shines through brightly, not very complex, but a solid wine, could probably use more time.

  • Bought upon release and well stored. Decanted just before drinking. This wine has a profound nose, though not very complex. Glorious fruit. The tannin's are still somewhat drying the mouth, but most of them have gone, either in the deposit or as a stain inside the bottle. This wine is not very complex but it is very enjoyable with... complex food like fried duck foie gras. It will keep at least 5 years, but I do not see it improving. Alain Brumont deserves praise for this wine.

  • APPEARANCE: clear; medium garnet; medium legs & tears
NOSE: clean; medium intensity; flavour characteristics: dark fruits (blackberry, black cherry), plum, almond, sweet spice (vanilla), vegetal (green) hints; developing
PALATE: dry; high acidity; full body; high tannin; high alcohol; medium+ finish; medium+ flavour intensity; flavour characteristics: as per nose: dark fruits (blackberry, black cherry), sweet spices (vanilla), white pepper, leather, tobacco, slightly bitter
READINESS FOR DRINKING: Can drink now, but has potential for further ageing
FURTHER REMARKS: good structure, well aged. Tannin and alcohol on the dominant side, slightly bitter. Well made wine, but lacks a bit charm. Better the 2nd day.

  • The wine looks Garnet colored. The legs are Medium. It smells like Strawberry, Raisin, Espresso, Light toast, and Artichoke.

  • Delightful aromas of blueberries, sawdust and some sweet cherry. The tannins have integrated perfectly, the mouthfeel is smooth and the finish is long. Flavours of apple peel, dark berries and some dry wood. Really lovely Madiran.

  • Had another one. For my taste it is perfectly ready now. Dark wine, smell of dark berries, and some pencil shavings / cedarwood which I had not noted before (but it was probably there). Loooong with smooth tannins. Perfect match for the grilled steak, and for the cheese plate. Some steely bitterness came up with one of the French goat cheese I had (Bouchon).

  • Alain Brumont tasting (Harrogate Fine Wine Company): -- tasted a couple pours non-blind over approx. 10 minutes --
-- bottle has been open, and poured from, for approx. 2.5 hours before I tasted it --

Nose was expressive; strong leather; hints of green olive, mint, and old wood paneling; hint of brett; reminded me of how my former dentist’s office smelled. Complex flavors on the palate: leather; chocolate; purple berry; nice funkiness; tannic, with good acidity; long finish of medium-strong intensity; 14% alc. not noticeable; some obvious tertiary development, but nowhere close to fully mature. Very very good, but expensive at $113; such a price, however, isn’t totally unreasonable for the quality (and age) in the bottle. On the fence about buying some of this.

  • Toasted oak, tobacco and ripe black forest fruits in the bouquet. On the palate dark fruits like cassis, firm, a bit drying tannin, acidity and bitterness. Good concentration and length. Early maturity stage now but this will still be more than ok around 2017 and probably longer. Almost the same note as the musketeer ;-)

91 pts

  • Drank this wine over 3 days, no signs of aging. Agree with forest floor smells, still lots of tannins. This wine cries for some cheese on the side (goat). It will not oxidize in the next decade or so, still young, vibrant, present tannins. I give the remaining bottles some rest, and stick to the regular Ch. Montus before opening more Cuvee Prestige bottles, in maybe a year or so.

  • Sadly my last bottle... intoxicating nose, with forrest floor, fresh mushrooms, ripe blackberries, remains very fresh despite its power. Mouthfeel is round and silky, lots of flesh and fruits with tertiary flavors beginning to pop up. Surpasses the 2001.

  • Regular dinner group (@ PvD): Compared to Bouscassé from the same vintage, this wine is more full bodied, more complex and less mature. It has a beautiful, complex and very complete bouquet with cassis, good oak, cigar box and a little lead pencil. Very juicy and quite much sweetness. This might sound a little like a Californian Cab., but it is everything but that. This is more like an inflexible headmaster. The internal beauty is there, but hardly showing. The wine is in a good balance, but needs several years to soften.
