Medium-deep garnet with pretty flashes of ruby on swirling. 12 hours slow air in open bottle. Tightly wound nose of mineral and dark fruits. More expressive on the palate, loads of sweet red fruit, juicy acidity and smooth tannins. There is an ever present faint fuminess of alcohol but no unpleasant heat on the palate, and this displays the usual Único velvet mouthfeel. Youthful in its fruit and structure, but a bit of tertiary soy and straw creep in through the finish. Drink now or hold.
I always say that I love Vega Sicilia, but what I really mean is that I love 30-40 year old Vega Sicilia from a great vintage. This may get there but the tannins are still very pronounced and they almost, but not completely obscure everything that might be going on underneath. I'll hold off a score and come back in ten years or so.
Beautiful nose on this vintage but this is firmer than the '96 and in need of more time. Quite delicious with layers of spicy dark fruits and the finish, while tight, bodes well for further development. 93+
This wine needed more than the 2 hour decant that it received. Less evolved than the '96 although with similar sweet dark fruit foundation. More spice notes and less earth notes. Overall firmer tannins and not a wine to be consumed now. Worthy of following its evolution which should be prolonged.
In the bouquet pleasant barnyard, red fruits and mature impressions. On the palate red fruits as well, a firm amount of acidity and chocolate. Beautiful wine, but not as impressive and complex as one would expect. An off bottle? I don't know. My score is for my own reference…
tasted together with 53 Unico, 98 Pingus, 96 L ermita, 95 Pesquera, a truly grand Spanish wine evening.
I was so taken by the 53 that this bottle made little impression, alos likely because I have had so many Unico before, there was not much excitement left, unlike the Pingus, which I only had a few bottles before.
Dark core with bricking, lots of chunky sediment; red fruit, nutty, VA, raisin, no funk, no dill; still sweet palate, redeeming from the nose, pure cherry, hints at cedar; great expression but there seemed to be something off with this bottle.
Unlike previous bottles this one didn't disappoint. Dark ruby red, excellent nose of dark red fruits, strawberries, a certain delectable freshness to the wine, mineral quality, fully reflected on the palate with tannins resolved after a couple of hours in the decanter, a nice finish ending in strawberries, licorice and flowers. Medium bodied and very enjoyable. No this wine is not yet going downhill.
Vega Sicilia, along with the single vineyard Guigal wines is a contender for one of the best, as well as consistent, high-end wines, Still young in appearance, as well as in taste, this concentrated, fresh, ripe, complex, deep wine is packed with ripe fruits, spice and earthy notes. While it’s drinking great today, it’s only going to improve over the next few decades.
Slightly disappointing showing unlike previous bottles I've had of the 95. Did not shine quite as I expected in a 5 Unico (82, 95, 98, 99, 2000) and 3 Riserva Especial (2009, 2010, and 2012 releases) vintage vertical. Did not have the complexity or fatness I've experienced from previous tastings of this excellent wine. Most likely bottle variance. Will have to retaste in future. Life sure is difficult savoring and writing these notes on these brilliant wines :)
With an incredible nose of barbecue, smoke, charcoal, earth, black cherry jam, mint, thyme and earth, you know you are in for a special treat. On the palate, this wine coats your mouth with soft, velvet textured fruit. Perfectly ripe and over ripe plums, black raspberries, spice, jam and spearmint that seem to remain on your palate for close to 50 seconds. What great treat and an even better wine. I wish I owned some.
A very dark wine with an inky black core and bright ruby red rim. Very reserved on the nose just giving slight hints of plums, sour cherries, licorice, tar, charcoal, leather, menthol, tobacco, with small hints of crushed rocks, cloves, and black pepper. On the palate the wine is massive with mouth coating flavors plums, blackberries, sour cherries, and raspberries on the attack leading to a acid filled mid-palate filled with flavors of coffee, dark chocolate, and licorice. A very long finish filled with refreshing acidity, spices, as well as mouth puckering tannins that sneak up on you. This mid to full bodied wine is made to be enjoyed with food, cerebral and thought provoking, can be drunk now or can age gracefully for 20+ years!
Exquisite Unico, one of the best bottles of 1995 I've had to date. Decanted and poured, this wine is ready for business. Deep dark crimson color, very slight hints of bottle age, the nose is rich with dark red raspberries, strawberries, flowers, cigar box and spices. Velvety entry on the palate, great acidity and balance, full bodied and coats the mid-palate with dark red fruits, and a very nice finish with persistent but smooth tannins. A few more years / decades of bottle ageing and the tannins will melt in your mouth but this is so enjoyable now. More ready than the 94 or 96.
I enjoyed this late night at Finca with tapas and good friends. This is a wonderful wine. Took a minute to open up, but once it did, what a treat. Fruit forward, with great complexity, and yet light on its feet with a long finish. Paired extremely well with the tapas. Much better than the bottle I had a few years back. Memorable.
pop n pour.tis is a nice bttl though it slightly lack some density here.it has intense flavour.aftertaste lingering.well balance.its a bttl close to grange 02 but better than grange 03.overall comment:nice nice nice
Regardless ofnother reviews I remain a keen vega sicilia unico fan, a wine which has to be decanted and aerated for at least 2-3 hours to fully open up. Blackish crimson color, hardly any sign of aging on the rim, great aromas of sweet red berries, raspberries, plums, a hint of sweet oak and nutmeg. On the palate, full bodied, velvety attack, fills the mid palate with dark red fruits, plums, spices, some leather, and a great finish. This wine is close to it's peak drinking window and has legs to last another 30 years+.
Vega-Sicilia evening (Regav @ Hall of Man restaurant): dark red-brown rich quality secondary & tertiary earthy aroma full body, ripe tannins, savory flavors, balanced acidity, but within short time it's becoming evident that this bottle was a bit over the peak and partially oxidized... alas, still an enjoyable Unico, but obviously less than expected...
This wine jumped out of the glass with dark red fruit. The palate shows untamed tannins and mouth coating intensity of dark red fruit, charcoal, mineral notes and endless finish. Too young to fully appreciate at this point.
Very earthy, complex wine. Drank out of a magnum, decanted for 4 hours, drinking beautifully, very slight signs of ageing at the rim, deep crimson. Opulent animal nose, earthy with dark fruits, sweet berries, plums and spices, reminded me of an aged right bank Bordeaux. Full bodied, great structure, built to last, very rich mid palate and a great finish. Still has decades to go but more ready than the more exotic 96.What a treat.
My second Unico, and a relative youngster compared to the first (1968). This was much tighter and not showing as much breadth on the palate, likely because it is so young. Bits of licorice, black currant, some black tea notes. Interesting combination of chewy yet concentrated, with an intense mouth-coating feel. Would love to revisit in 20+ years, but was very good tonight. (PE: 93)
Drank the 95 and 96 Unico side by side tonight. Both were great, but the 96 is much more accessable at this point in time. The 96 was rich and hedonistic, while the 95 was somewhat more precise and less open. Drink the 96 now, but hold on the 95.
An Evening of Vega Sicilia Unico. (Post House.): A completely different animal from any Vega I've tried before. Really dark in color with more of an oak presence on the nose and palate, though it's not overburdened. Lots of ripe berry and black cherry fruit. In fact, that's the dominating character. Very primary with big structure. Tannins are ripe. All about potential now, though I believe it will turn out well. It was kind of like drinking a well-made and balanced California Cabernet in some ways, albeit a spicy one. A-.
