Mostly spices and tertiary notes. I drank this over lunch and had some left for dinner. Best upon opening, it had fallen apart in the evening. Another disappointing experience with a bottle from this famed vintage.

Served blind. Cassis and violets on the nose. Initially thinking maybe this is a Margaux but mid-palate is light and lacks density and concentration. Comes over as young. An interesting wine.

Deep Ruby. Earthy notes, mushroom, truffle, spices, plum, blackberries. Medium Acidity. Full bodied. Complex. Strong but not so well structured tannins. Long, intense finish.

On opening, the first sniff was really surprising - no oak, no chocolate, no deep, rich aromas, on the contrary, a wonderfully fresh smell of spring flowers, followed by sweet cherry, violets and a hint of plum. The first sip was just as disconcerting - very fresh and fruity, like a Chinon, blueberry, blackcurrant and cherry, not at all cloying, but then it morphed into something else - cough mixture, with a very hot after-taste which slides down the back of the throat. Going back for more, the attack tasted slightly weak compared to the hot finish, giving the impression of something unbalanced. Not bad, but I've had better Côtes de Castillon for a lot less.
All in all, not the disaster I feared but nothing special either, especially at the price. The best thing about this was the bouquet.

This has proven to be my favorite inexpensive 2005 Bordeaux. One of those 'wish I'd bought more' wines. Very nicely balanced, minerality and fruit... Sufficient remaining tannin that I'm inclined to give the last bottle some time to see what happens.

I hope the consignor was a widow who didn't know that her husband stored his wine poorly, but if the consignor knew what he was doing, there will be a special circle in hell for him. Of three bottles, one was tannic and dead, one okay but unremarkable, and one corked. I shudder at the prospect of the three remaining. WineBid should have a seller feedback score. You don't have to know who you are buying from, but the auction listing could note that the seller has a score of 99.6 or 72.3. How hard could the computer programming be? So auction buying would be less of a crap shoot.

Served blind, guessed '06 right bank, but didn't expect this much cab franc in the blend. Dark and plummy nose, with roasted coffee. Palate with densely concentrated fruit, quite plush up front with the tannins really kicking in on the back end. Moderate finish. Loads of dark concentrated fruit, with plenty of tannins, though highly polished and fine.Somewhat in a modern forward concentrated style, without giving up balance. Needs 5+yrs but should continue to improve.

Tasted with 5 other 2005 Bordeaux and this came out on top for both the group and myself. Not decanted, just popped and poured. Deep purple color/garnet rimmed. Inital nose of cigar box and cedar. Starts with lots of dark fruit but not over-the-top, good acidity to balance. High and dry tannins that softened after an hour in the glass. Although it's showing quite well, it's still too young. With it's impressive structure, this one will keep for quite a while.

Dark black/purple to the rim. Very bold legs, allot of glycerin. New world Bordeaux in style. Nose somewhat muted but nuiances of black and blue fruit. Mouth feel extremely smooth through the mid palate but chalky, chunky and dry on the finish with nice spice. Cab Franc very present and gives it the smooth mellow palate. Allot going on and somewhat trying to come together. I think this is approacable but yound. Can drink now but will improve over the next 3-5 years. Jeff and Jim are spot on. Roundness may be the right expression for the mid palate.

Just great. Modern Bordeaux at a great price. It may not be classic but who cares. Delicious, balanced and rich. Unmistakable cabernet. developed some lovely cedery characters a few hours after decanting. If you can find this wine buy it. I have been running through my 2005 Bordeaux from Castillon, Fronac etc and while I have had some lovely wines this is a standout. Great colour as well. This is very good.

On day 2, the wine is even more expressive and rounder. The nose displays dark berries, dark cherries, spices and liquorice with some meaty and tobacco scents and sweet oakiness. On the palate, it shows huge fruit concentration, and this becomes more obvious when compared to another wine, excellent tannins and a most wellcome (for a wine of high extract) acidic lift. Aftertaste is long. I intend to open my last bottle in 2-5 years, and I believe that it will have absorbed the oakiness and merrit an (even) higher score.

Much more expressive now than when last tasted 2 years ago. Dark ruby-purple, with dark plum, blackberries, liquorice, spice and not (yet) fully integrated oakiness. On the palate it is medium to full-bodied, with firm, juicy tannins, sweet and ripe dark fruit, spicyness and balancing acidity. Long aftertaste. Needs some cellaring or aeration to fully integrate the oak and will merrit an even higher score in the future. Still have half a bottle left in the balcony (temperature is 0 to 4 degrees celsius!), so I might come back tomorrow.

Deep purple with an impressive, forward nose showing cassis, pungent spice, and well integrated toasty oak. Has freshness. Dense in palate with vibrant acidity and medium + sandy and ripe tannins that balance medium full body and generous alcohol. Shows class, personality and intensity. Could easily be mistaken with a much more celebrated and definately more expensive Right Bank Merlot blend.

Dark color, slightly cloudy, but no off aromas and cork in great shape. Best two hours afer decanting when it had time to soften. Deep purple color, berry nose but with a trailing-off aroma. Deep rich berry, cassis and blackberry palate with a jolt of acid and tannin at the end. Spouse didn't pick it as a Bordeaux, but the finish is a clue. Fine now (with a decant) but I'll wait another 3-5 before opening another. Can't help but mention that I picked this up for $2US less than I paid for futures of it 5 years ago.

This needs time and/or decanting. On the first night, it's interesting; full of red (under ripe) plum fruit and the nougat-like quality you sometimes get with organic/ bio-dynamic wines (90). On the second night; there's Merlot purple plum fruit, mixed with pine/ forest floor, in a dark, lush mix that still screams natural wine (94).

From 60% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, this sexy, fat, plush wine is filled with licorice, coca powder, black and blue fruit, forest floor and esperesso beans. Bravo! A complete surprise. I was expecting Cap de Faugeres or La Tour Carnet, over-extraction that provides a quick heroin rush followed by a crack up and quick crash. What I got instead was a $35 mini-Pavie. Modern, smooth and balanced. Yes, that's right. Those three adjectives *can* make it into the same sentence. It had an impenetrable Pavie-like inky-black color. What struck me, though, was the pleasantness, roundness of the wine. In that sense quite un-2005-like, a vintage that I generally find structured and sharp almost to a fault. (And I like my wines structured and sharp.) The alcohol level is "only" 13.8%. No rough edges, blueberries and black currant, I fully expect this wine to hold for at least another decade, but it is drinking beautifully right now. Another example of "modern Bordeaux" that in no way whatsoever offends my sensibilities. Call off the apocalypse. Make no mistake about it: This ain't California. If this is the future of Bordeaux, then maybe, just maybe, we are going to be alright.

Double decanted and poured over several hours. Impressed by this young but forward dense ruby-red wine. The initial blue and black berry and chocolate smells explode from the bottle and linger, already a really pleasant surprise. The palate is tight but with plenty of cherry fruit and coffee with interesting appearances of dandelion and salty, smoky minerality. Great balance and promise. This has the stuffing to stay strong and gain nuance, but it was definitely a treat to enjoy one now. On day two a slight unexpected softness fails to support the mid-back palate flavors and maybe it faded a little more than expected. Downgraded a point from 92 to 91.

Tight the first day so recorked. Delicious on day two. Intense blackberries and enough earthy qualities at the back to remind you its Bordeaux. While modern and perhaps a tad overripe for my taste, its got enough acidity and tannic structure for medium term cellaring.

Tasted at C.W.C. dinner in Athens with Stephane Derenoncourt. Very powerful and hedonistic. Liquorice, blackberries and blueberries on the nose are followed by a full bodied palate with great fruit, soft tannins, good acidity and a very long finish.
