Deep crimson, minimal bricking and deposit. Classic bouquet, earth, leather with lingering undertones of dark fruits. Deep dark red and black fruits, currant, plum and blackberries with a dark chocolate cocoa finsh. Pretty good if a bit modern. Seems ready to go. Nice QPR at $25.

Purchased in 2007. Waiting for the right time to share this wine. A beautiful day with my sister and brother in law (who loves French Bordeaux) presented the right occasion Dinner included seared Waygu New York strip, potatoe fingerling, roasted potatoes and greens from the Carlsbad farmers market. Color was deep ruby red. Full bodied. Notes of dark berries on the nose. All signs of the deliciousness that was to come. The wine was subtle on the palate but the tannins were well balanced on the finish. Leather, dark cherry, chocolate, tobacco all notes on the palate. A lot of risidual left in the glass which shows it aged well. This vintage has several good years left to age.

No formal notes, as this was consumed at a wine dinner with 8 different wines, but it was really quite beautiful, second only to a 2004 Ausone, which says a lot. Nicely integrated tannins and a good mix of earth, floral and dark fruit notes.

Straight out of the bottle it has a subtle aromatic nose, red berries and earth tones which foretell a complexity that should be great in 40 minutes. On taste, there is nice acid, leather, oh yeah, this is going to be very good! Look at all that grape detritus stuff in the bottle! 40 minutes in: Indeed the wine opened up smooth revealing some spice, nice tannins, overall the definition of a St. Emilon Bordeaux!

Bought on release. Opened 1hour before dinner at restaurant. Decanted for airaetion not for sediment. Chunky sediment. Mild bricking. Reticent palate of dark fruits, graphite and some earthy notes. Mild Bordeaux funk. Great structure , good acidity. Soft mouthfeel, solid front to backend. Nice QPR right banker that held up well. Good to go, no reason to hold but definitely has life in it.

Cranberry, tobacco, nicely rounded. Great for another couple years.
Opened about two hours before drinking, did not decant, poured through an aerating filter — perfect — opened up just a little more in the glass. Plenty of sediment; glad it was filtered.

Deep color. Bit tight initially but then it awoke to reveal lovely elements of blackberries and chocolate. Soft tannins and good length. More concentrated and long than the 2005 Leoville Barton that we had concurrently. Seems young and a bit raw. Hopefully this will further soften with more aging.

Very nice St Emilion drinking very youthfully right now but in a good place for those who like bigger fruitier wines. A mix of red and black fruits although primarily blackberry, cassis, intense on the nose and the palate. Some nice spice notes and as another reviewer noted, licorice on the finish. Perhaps a tad oaky but that was less distracting with food. Plenty of acid and still some drying tannins which did not dissipate over the 2 days I followed this. Plenty of evolution left for this one. Drink or hold
This wine has great acidity and dry tannins that made the porterhouse I had just that much better. The nose has blackberry, herbal and cedar notes. The palate is greeted with stewed red and black fruits, similar herbal notes and a dry licorice finish. Exceptional wine for the price from a great vintage.

Decanted for 45 minutes with a fair amount of sediment. The color was a ruby red with fading to the rim. The nose yields a mix of red and dark red fruits along with some cedar. The medium bodied palate shows this same mix of red and dark red fruits - cherry, cranberry, currant - earth, some cedar, and just a touch of drying tannins. The acidity is vibrant but balancing, making this wine a pleasure to drink, especially with our roasted lamb loin. The wine appeared relatively young - the absence of tertiary flavors and the touch of drying tannins - indicating that it can probably hold for another 3 to 5 years, or longer.

The wine looks purple colored. The legs are slow. There is heavy sediment in the bottle. It smells like black pepper and tobacco. The body is full. The wine has coarse texture. The wine finishes medium. The wine has medium acidity.
It's a deep, dark red wine with lots of legs. The nose is fragrant of leather, slight tobacco, and crushed berries. The wine swirls in the mouth and is powerful fruit forward, yet very dark fruit palate. Each sip comes on slow and finishes with chocolate, Hershey syrup, concentrated blackberry, light oak, soft tannins and a delicious finish that begs for the next sip. This wine is delicious and has moved into a place of maximum enjoyment.

Wow! This '05 is packed with a heavy nose of dark fruits, promising a rich wine from this classic year in St. Emilion. And the taste doesn't fail the tease of the aromatics. Rich and bold. No hint of its age. A delicious and real wine from an outstanding place on earth. Enjoy!

Nice bold fruit on the nose, with a hint of tobacco. Fruitier than I might expect from a 24 year old Bordeaux. Beautiful dark purple in the glass, very smooth on the palate. More new world than I might have expected, but very enjoyable. Glad to have 5 more I would decant the next bottle, since this still drinks young.
Needs long decant.. Still very tannic...Nose is dark fruits, cherry, currants, cassis, pencil lead, vanilla, licorice... Palate is dark fruits, licorice, truffles, tannins are very high leading to dry, austere finish.. Probably has 92 score potential but needs at least 3-5 years more in a the bottle or very long decant..

Decanted in glass and consumed over three hours. In hindsight, I would have given this a full decant for about three hours before consuming as there is plenty of young stuffing and some alcohol (which does blow off) still in there after fourteen years. Good char cries for a grilled piece of meat. Tannins resolving and growing finer but there is definitely a firm structure here which is coated with black fruit which balance things a bit. Dark and brooding still. Give it time in a decanter or, better yet, in the cellar for another 3-5 years.

À maturité? bon bordeau mais encore un peu austère a mon goût. Le fruit n'est pas trop exubérant mais l'on y retrouve des pointes de fruits noirs. Je vais attendre encore un an pour la prochaine bouteille.

Opaque cloudy black/brown; prunes, raisins, blackcherry, oxidative note, kirsch, anise, sweet entry, high alcohol. This could be an Amarone. Extreme NW winemaking style here. interesting. Blind at Brian's.

First bottle of case. Most teeth-staining red I've had in a long, long time. Huge fruit w/o typical Bordeaux barn yard smell (not a plus in my view). Still youthful. No hurry to consume. Likely to continue to improve. Less developed and more concentrated than the 2000, even adjusting for the 5 year difference.

Pop and pour - note after 2 hours. Chocolate and black currant on the nose. Fruit forward, round and voluptuous. Very modern styled Bordeaux. Lacking a bit of structure. I have doubts on how this will age.

Been about 4 years since my last bottle, and time has been kind to this wine. This was big, rich, ripe and still fresh and bright with lively acidy. Lovely nose with dark fruits and a hint of tobacco, as well as some heat. Medium-bodied, rich, concentrated and surprisingly structured. Blackberry and boysenberry dominate along with dark cherry, licorice and graphite and with cocoa on the lengthy finish. Overall a decadent, full-flavored, lip-smacking, delicious wine.

This wine is, in my view, at its apogee. It has a pleasing if not overly generous nose. On the palate it is round yet expansive with good finish and balance. I see no reason to hold off on drinking my remaining bottles. Wihle this wine should hold for 3-5 years, I don't think it will improve

First bottle in three years. Decanted for about an hour and a half at this point. Green pepper, licorice, fruit liqueur, and nice minerality. This is probably in its prime drinking window now. Tannins are supple and balanced by acidity. It really tastes like there is more CS in the blend than advertised. Easily 92. Hopefully, I can hang onto a couple of bottles for 5-8 years to see this develop further.

This wine was certainly a pleasant surprise, exceeding my expectations. A right bank Bordeaux at the right level of maturity in my opinion based on this bottle I had. Great fruit on the nose, and hints of coffee, leather, and bacon fat. Deep inky purple color. Long smooth finish, an enjoyable bottle of wine. I have two others, will look forward to enjoying these later this year.

Chocolate, plumb, blueberry and coffee. Big mouth feel and still a baby. This is so good now but with patience will get much better. Its all here structure and balance with massive tannin that coat the mouth on the finish. You can smell this a foot away from the glass. So concentrated....great wine.

Complex floral / black fruit / stewed fruit nose. Restrained fruit and a somewhat flat clay / pencil-lead background and finish. Long finish, plenty of tannic grip. Opened after a few hours into more fruit, not the disappointment it was initially but still fairly limited.

Deep color. Tannins integrated, but I thought complexity was missing some based upon tasting this a couple of years ago. Others have said it needs a few more years--I think it may be starting to go to the downside and that it wasn't built to last as long as other Bordeaux

A 92 for sure and will get better. Opened and drank over 2 hours. Intense but nicely defined. Aged ripe black cherries, tar, minerals, black olives and exotic fruit. Tonic and quite grippy, some alcohol. Outstanding now but should more integrate with time in the bottle.

Bright berry in the aromatics, with a tannic & structured palate that has an herbal edge with typical density and ripeness for the vintage. Due to the tannic nature of the wine there is very little you can taste other than those tannins. Perhaps good with burgers, or wait another 10 years. This is like a WWF all Right Bank Smackdown....no elegance.

Decanted for 1+ hours. Color of crushed blackberries. Fruit liqueur, oak, and vanilla aromas. Oak subsides after 2 hours of air. Black cherry and vanilla flavors explode from the fresh acidity. Licorice on a long finish with integrated tannins. Very, very good, but I don't pick up the secondary flavors reported by other, so my score is a little lower. First of six bottles purchased en premier.
Day 3, after returning wine to the bottle and adding argon. Mineral and chocolate flavors and intense dark fruit. Adding 2 points, 90 --> 92.

This is my 1st of 6 bottles as I have been patiently waiting for this little beauty to emerge. The color is spectacular; dark inky purple. The nose gives sandalwood, vanilla and leather. I love the way this wine enters your mouth as you immediately recognize this is special. The wine has wonderful silky tannins and great complexity with black cherry, a hint of green pepper and cocoa being most prominent. The wine finishes strong with a tannic grip and has you wanting more. What a fabulous wine. I am very excited to see where this might go for those who may be cellaring this wine.

Ruby red & translucent. Heady aroma of copious fruit berries and vanilla - very creamy. A little alcohol. Very soft on the palate. Extremely fruity before the tannins kick in on the mid-palate. Transitions to dryness with lots of fruit staying with the medium to long finish. Outstanding! Good drinking now with lots of staying power still to come, I think.

Ch. Pipeau vs. Ch. Faugeres (2005) (My House): So much sweet, vanilla oak. So much extraction. Very dark in color -- this will stain your wine glass. Although Merlot, this could easily be a ringer in a tasting of premium Napa Valley Cabernet. Very sweet, very ripe tannins. This is the type of wine that would bully its way to the top of a comparison tasting; but would a drinker reach for a second glass? In other words, this beats the Pipeau all day long in a tasting, but, personally, I think the Pipeau is the better wine to enjoy two or three glasses over the course of a meal. Parker frequently uses the term "hedonistic", and this wine is a fine example. Drinking well now, and may soften a bit over the next several years. But I don't think this will evolve into anything remarkably complex. My recommendation is to drink sooner than later. I agree with the last Jeff Leve tasting note -- rich, modern -- all true.

Very rich, ripe, sweet dark berry fruit with a complex mixture of tar, licorice and coffee. Medium to full bodied with a firm structure and rough edges. Not nearly as smooth or lush as I expected, this is an iron fist in a glove, but it is not yet a velvet glove. Probably a lot of upside with another 2-3 years of bottle time.

The power trio of Michel Rolland, Stephan von Neipperg and Silvio Denz produced a solid wine in 2005. Still deep in color, with licorice, coffee, blackberry, blueberry, stone and chocolate covered cherries, this is a sensuous, deep, rich, opulent, lush, modern style of St. Emilion wine that has offered pleasure from the moment it was bottled. There is a lot to like here and it's still fairly priced.

Expressive aroma of ripe and almost cooked blueberry and butter cake, some cream and oak, notes of cassis and flowers. Rich palate of cooked black fruit and toast, drying and almost attacking tannin with some acidity, robust and powerful, concentrated and full bodied, Medium to long pleasant sweet finish of ripe blueberry with mouth-watering acidity. The nose was really introducing. More St Emilion-like than last time, but still atypical. An excellent wine that's rich in fruit but only reduced by the attacking tannin. It will be great when the tannin has integrated, and hopefully I can give it a truly deserved mark. Good wine for food.

WSET II; 10/23/2010-10/24/2010 (Portland, ME): Deep purple color. Light-intensity nose of red and black fruits, earthiness, tobacco, vegetal. Medium body, medium-plus tannin; black fruit and leather on the palate. Very good.

Beautiful clear deep ruby. First nose showed sweet blueberry paste and high alcohol. Predominant cocoa powder and fresh blueberry nose, notes of flowers, mint and just tiny cassis, ended with hint of cherry liqueur, not quite typical right bank. Mouth-watering fruity entrance, ripe plum and blueberry, a little drying tannin, powerful and thick, full bodied. Medium to long comfortable cherry and sweet blueberry finish with nice notes of creamy meaty savoury. Interesting nose but reduced by the high alcohol. Pure but not deep enough. If the tannin and alcohol finally come together after two years, the mark will rise to reflect its real potential. One mark was added for its excellent food accompanying ability and evolution throughout the night.

A very nice young Boredeaux. Tasted it alongside the (half as expensive) Cap de Faugeres and the difference was quite minimal which leads me to believe that, for my palate, the Cap de Faugeres is the place to be. Still, this was a great wine of fantastic depth and complexity. Very nice stuff.

Opened and decanted about 4 hours before double decanting back into the bottle and serving about 1 hour later. Purple color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Lovely perfumed nose with added notes of currants and plums. Flavors of currants, plums and some black cherry notes on the medium to long finish. Medium to bright acidity, medium to firm tannins, full bodied. Hold is the recommendations but this is quite tasty right now with plenty of airtime and tempting to open right now from a hedonistic standpoint. Let's call it WIML92 right now but might pick up a point or so with time in bottle.

Ch. Pipeau vs.

The nose was really introducing. More St Emilion-like than last time, but still atypical. An excellent wine that's rich in fruit but only reduced by the attacking tannin. It will be great when the tannin has integrated, and hopefully I can give it a truly deserved mark. Good wine for food.
