NobleRottersSydney - 2010 & prior (Fix, St James, Sydney): {500ml, cork} [Gordon] Caramel with sultanas. Evidently ancient. Masterly palate, medium/dry, with lots of acidity, honey and stewed prunes and then overlaid by a seductive furry caramel that dominates the finish. Medium weight, but with a long, long finish. Wow. Wonderful stuff. Checking my old notes; this triumphantly confirm the bottle we shared back in 2004 was a poor example.

Josh's bottle. Burly and ornery - high acid and alcohol (10% alcohol). Caramel and coffee, sweet, clove and fruitcake. Huge on the palate - acid and alcohol, caramel, clove, spice, coffee, fruitcake, heat comes out at the end with cider, caramel and spice. A monster and will put hair on your chest. Probably 16-16.5/20.

Interesting wines on choucroute night at Sarah's. (Sarah's.): Didn't look promising as it was a dark amber/brown color and rather cloudy. On first pour, spicy chai and apple cider aromas dominated before shifting to dried apricot, raisins, ginger and earth. Intensely sweet with some viscosity, but with crisp acidity balancing it nicely. Apricot, raisin and hard coffee candy flavors that eventually pick up raspberry notes. It showed a bit of hole at the onset, but the wine grew with air and it filled in. Surprisingly good considering how it looked and given the reputation of communist era Tokaji. A-.

NobleRottersSydney - NOT Oz/NZ/France/Italy (Lucio's, Paddington): A dark brown, which in colour and viscosity resembled motor oil. The nose was quite coarse, resembling a mixture of cold tea and rotting vegetables. On the palate there is significant oxidization – it’s not dissimilar to an amontillado sherry is some ways – although signs of richness remain the wine has pretty well dried out. A longish finish, but really a shadow of what it may have been.
