THe last bottle of a case. A sad day indeed, as this wine is drinking supremely well now. An intoxicating nose of leather and prune leads into an elegant and complex, perfectly balanced and utterly pleasing palate. The structure fades out a bit in the back palate with a good but not stellar finish, perhaps the only weakness of this otherwise outstanding bottle. Enjoyed these over 15 years - what a majestic vintage that for many of these middle range bottlings only reached their pinnacle in the past few. I'd agree that it's time to dink these up for those of you lucky enough to still have any

This is a nice mature Margaux ready to drink now or over the next few years. It’s nose yields aromas of florals, wet earth and oak. The once robust fruit and harsh tannins have faded over the years, leaving a harmonious melange of stewed black berries, plums, figs, black tea, and leather. This wine is medium bodied with a modest finish. It is a classic Bordeaux in all respects but lacks the elegance and finesse that I associate with great Margaux from a fine vintage.

Loads of tertiary flavors - forest floor, rosemary, wet cedar. The medium weight body seemed more plush with red fruit, finish was very soft. Would drink now.

Celebrated Nick’s 18. On this monumental occasion, we opened up a 2005 for his birth year. Bottle was stored perfectly with no seepage, a perfectly clean cork and fill level was still excellent.
Colour of brick dark orange red. Upon popping there was an immediate nose of terroir, berries and truffles. We decanted for about 30 min and through this time aromas of chocolate, cotton candy and more truffles and terroir continued to fill the decanter. There was fine sediment left on the bottle but nothing excessive.
On the palette, everything was nicely integrated and in balance. Didn’t get the signature floral rose pedal notes from this Margaux region wine. But it still felt delicate, soft and complex. Unmistakably Margaux due to the prominence of terroir. Still some mild grippy tannins which was expected from this epic 2005 vintage. It’s built to last as I’m confident this vintage will outlive many. The finish was long.
I’ve tasted other 2005 bottles and there’s a common theme thus far. Perfection of balance, subtleness and structure for longevity. I see why Bordelais have adored this vintage and rank it as one of the true greats over the past decades. Looking forward to many more.

Great, elegant Margaux. Ripe Cabernet Sauvignan driven Bordeaux. Elegant ceder-cassis nose. Intense red, Mocca-Cassis taste. Phantastic ripe Margaux. This red is an a good level, do not wait to long with drinking tit beaudyful wine.

Notes of mild red fruit, menthol, fresh earth, mild floral note and, eucalyptus. Very balanced with nice tannins, acidity, dark red fruit, medium finish, all things in balance. My .02 is this is prime time with 5-10 left in the tank.

Into its prime drinking window, but given the time it took to get there it should hold for years. A beautifully balanced, harmonious wine. The colour is still dark with a brick tone, the nose is rich and scented and the palate has a flowing texture and flavour saturation, but never heavy (13% abv.) I understand this estate has a significant (20%) planting in cabernet franc, which has been brilliantly utilised in this wine to lift its fragrance and sweet notes. Compared to a 2003 recently tried, the 2005 was a great step up in structure, balance and age worthiness.

This is definitely coming into its own. Medium color but fairly opaque. Sweet floral nose with a bit of a charred quality. Medium body. Ripe sweet plum fruit, maybe a bit of chocolate. Fine tannins are still present. Long finish with a very pleasant charred quality I feel like this has entered its drinking window. It might improve, but it's not wrong to drink it now.

For me, this is at its best, super mellow notes on the nose, weighty in the mouth with subtle tannins and beautiful fruit, all harmonious, it’s my go to wine and, perhaps selfishly I don’t share, just drink on its own as an afternoon treat or a bed time drink. Problem is, finding anymore of it. A benchmark for me for all Margaux’s.
Coming along very nicely, the vanilla oak fading into the background and playing second fiddle to some exciting and racy acidity. Now pleasingly settled and can see a bright future for the next 10 years.

Friday Night - family dinner with home-made-ish chips and bargain steak: Opened on a Friday evening, enjoyed with pommes Tilney and half price Lidgate fillet. Very much like the last bottle, a little plusher than my usual claret, long finish, cedar and cigar box but also some fruit in the mid palate. All too easy to drink, you might miss how much it has to say. I suspect these will become even more attractive with age, but not sure if I am going to give my remaining bottles the chance.

Popped and poured after our previous bottle was visited by the c*rk fairy. A little bit plush perhaps and there’s no ignoring the oak - after a few minutes in the glass it evens itself out and becomes a somewhat classic claret, albeit at the generous end. Really lovely and a somewhat restrained (for 2022) 13% abv. Just the thing for a slightly decadent Tuesday.
Perfect ripe Margaux. Dark, concentrate red colour. Komplex cassis fruit in the nose. Great pleasure. Very complex taste, ripe, cassis, low alkohol (13%), burgundy style, phantastic, classic Cabernet driven Margaux. Do not wait with the drinking. It is a well developed Margaux now. 22.January 2023: Still a great Margaux. Fantastic red wine to drink now. 17 March 2024: Well matured. Cassis, mocca driven Margaux with low alcohol. Great well matured Bordeaux. Do mit wait to open this red.

92 pts

Old world claret from a great vintage. Lead pencil, a little cigar box, black fruit, medium finish. Had with a rib eye and massed potatoes and burnt broccoli. Went perfectly.

Some pencil box and blackcurrant leaf on the nose. Palate absolutely in the zone, a delight. It took a couple of hours to open up. Tannins evolved, moderate acidity keeps it fresh and balances the ripeness, tastes as if the merlot and cab franc are punching somewhat above their weight (10% each). Not overly sophisticated, but no country bumpkin either. Was even better two days later (under argon). Drink now or keep another five years. Very good QPR from release.

Suburban Saturday with Lidl Steak, homemade chips and Doctor Who: Oh yeah. This is really coming into its own. I tend to think of Du Tertre as being somewhat approachable, maybe almost plush - this was certainly very giving of its pleasured, but compared to the most recent bottle seemed to have put on some heft, some structure. The nose too is really attractive - just a bit of forest floor, but a nice bit of forest, near a modern hotel on a warm spring morning. I went long on these and sold a few - regretting the selling now.

Might well have scored higher if decanted for 2.5 hours. Only had a one hour decant BUT towards the end of the bottle it had put on so much weight. Also temperature crucial needs to be 20c

Jason's 2005 Bordeaux at Noizé: Plush, joyous - ready to drink but no rush. Along with the Lagune this was well served by being opened when it was. As we discussed at the table, the pleasurable ease of drinking can make it easy to forget that it is a somewhat serious wine. Very pleased to have quite a few more of these in the cellar.

This was a participant in a 2005 Bordeaux horizontal dinner. What a lovely wine! This has 20% Cabernet franc and 5% Petit Verdot in the blend in addition to the 45% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% merlot, and it showed. It has alluring floral, peppery and tobacco notes, and a pleasant cool-fruited quality sometimes lacking in other wines in this vintage, but at the same time it is ripe, inky and youthful, and will be even better in five years. Highly recommended.

Jason's 2005 dinner (Noize): A nice surprise here. Still youthful, but so charming and ready to please. Pencil lead and violets on the nose, good, deep fruit on the palate, yet retained a lightness of touch. My #3 this evening.

2005 Bordeaux (Noizé, London): Deep ruby. A lovely brightness here. Dolly herbaceous feel to the blackcurrant. Dark fruited. Quite broad and rounded on the attack, breadth rather than length. A nicely floral freshness with air. **(**)

On opening, I found this to be much too tannic so I recorked it and returned to it four days later.
A ripe but not overripe bouquet of blackcurrant, herbs and spices, then a bright attack of blackcurrant, before the tannins hit - even after four days - and a typical 2005 sensation of citrus fruits, accompanying the more typical blackberry flavours.
Overall, leaner than I expected, much less plump than the 00 for example, but once the tannins die down, they give a little snap to the middle section which is not unpleasant. The style is less "modern" too, which suits me fine.
Unlike others, I think this needs a few more years in the cellar, after which it should merit another two points.

Decanted for 1.5 hours, served at around 19c perfect. Elegant, round & feminine. Good nose and good length. After 20 minutes or so the tannins appear to override and it is distinctly dryer in the mouth. IMO it is at its peak but sliding fast. I am going to drink mine up over the next 6 months.

Strawberry, blackberry, roasted pepper, charcoal, even notes of barbecue; fruitful, robust, lively but finish is a little short After 1 Hour: Similar on nose and palate though the charcoal has faded some on the nose and slightly more perfumed, very good

Nearing peak, Margaux, 2005 Château du Tertre ($37 in 2008). Light-mid brick, amber edges; closed, red fruit, leather, wood nose; opens with air; mid-body; round (13.0 alc.); medium tannins; some depth; long, semi-chewy red fruit finish. w/beef. 16.5 UC Davis scale, 91 other scales.

Has come into its secondary window, the flavours still sharp, exotic, light but powerful. Less meaty with age but still those noticeable but fairly innocuous vanilla notes. Mellowing nicely, this should sit well for a while and ready to try another in a couple of years.

No issue with the cork. Very fresh and young. Lots of berry, chocolate & coffee on the nose. On the palate wild berries, wet leather, forest undergrowth. Very silky with soft tannins. Quite lovely. Still have 2 more, thankfully. Paired great with grilled filets.

Decanted for 4 hours although this was in a good place after an hour or two.
Ridiculously smooth with a wonderful soft, red fruit feel and a pleasant, plush depth behind the fruit.
On the nose it suggests tobacco, leather, cigar box, which I am a big fan of. This is deceptive because on the palate it’s a little bit of this but subtler and more complex.
Decanted 2 hours. Notes from 3rd day under eto. Dark garnet, some bricking. Lifted nose. Soft entry, medium bodied cassis and sandalwood profile. A hint of cigar leaf on the medium long finish. Fine tannins add texture and complexity.
Very polished and balanced. Elegant and fine boned. Drinking well now and I'd imagine still good for 5-10 years as there is still freshness and vibrancy aplenty.

1.5 hours in the decanter at this point. Some animal and oak aspects obvious from the first sniff. This carries over to the palate. Some cherry components on the mid-palate, but otherwise not much fruit. Maybe more time open will allow the fruit to become more present. Velvety mouthfeel that suggests that the tannins are fully mature.
At 2.5 hours, the fruit become more upfront--cherries, strawberries, raspberries, and plums. Before this evolution, I was more in the 88-89 window, now would go 90-91.

Friday night - conference calls, the Mandolorian, sushi and brie: Just a hint of cigar box on the nose. On the palate - plush, tannins gentle and fully integrated. Black fruit - slightly sweet on the finish. Feels like a damning with faint praise - this is a well put together wine. Paired with fatigue at the end of a LONG week, the Mandolorian and some Baron Bigod brie.
Dark, bold, with good fruit, resolved tannins and very restraint wood, nice acidity and decent length. Much better than 4 years ago. Just a bit one-dimensional.

24 bottles purchased en-primeur. Decanted for 2.5 hours served at 18c the perfect temperature for us. Good length on the nose albeit gentle of dark & forest fruits. So smooth in the mouth again dark fruits with a little sous bois . Again good length. Everything you would want in this wine of Margaux at 15 years old. For us it is in a perfect place with great balance. Not a long keeper now but will steadily drink my other 16 bottles over the next year or two.

A wine that has reached the end of the road, but like all of us who have reached the end of the road still has something to offer. Colour is deep with traces of brick; smoky wooded nose with soft fruit, very pleasant and mature; good full fruit, but just a little sweet and one dimensional. The wine is not bad, but it requires more backbone and is without staying power. I like it because claret has to be really bad for me not to like it.

Last bottle from a case purchased at auction in 2015, and continuously sampled since then. I've noticed this wine slowly decline, losing some of the vibrancy of fruit that I enjoy. Tonight's bottle is similar to the last few I have tried in recent months, earth and tobacco on the nose, more earth, sousbois, faint red and black cherries, and an acid finish. Nice claret, to be sure, but I'm not too sad this is the end of the line for this particular case. Good but not great. 91/92
I really didn't care for this at first but it did improve with air. The texture is lovely with dark fruit flavors and some nice smoky notes but the finish just kinda trails off without much complexity or intensity so a bit disappointing.

This bottle was more of a dirty bdx than I remembered, lots of oak and leather and earth coming through in the first two hours after openining. Then the red fruit began to shine. Paired with Easter ham and potato salad leftovers.
Very easy to drink, ripe and fruity. A little bit of a heavy texture. Great with food. Gave it almost two hours decant before drinking - seems odd but almost feel like it could have used more. Continued to evolve through the evening.

From a half bottle. A classic Bordeaux nose of red fruit, cigar box and forest floor - medium in intensity. Pleasant, if light fruit in a medium weight body. Tannins completely integrated; a light, earthy finish. Wouldn’t wait any longer, already a bit of a lightweight.

Académie des Cinquante 64th Annual Dinner (Sofitel The Grand, Amsterdam, NL): A perfect bottle, in great shape. Nose was more Saint Julien than Margaux, with dark fruit, cedar, pencil, and game. Youthful texture including some unresolved tannins, but it has softened a bit over the years. I can tell why some tasters taste green, but I would call that note cedar verging on pine. No florals surprisingly. The palate has plum, cassis, animal must, and forest. It seems restrained, and there could be latent mushroom, meat, and spice underneath, but those haven’t really emerged. Maybe in 5 more years.

Coravin for the first 2-3 nights, then opened the bottle a few nights in. Tight the whole time, I don't think this is ready. Really good core of fruit, no hard edges, but I don't think it's giving all it has. Probably worth revisiting in another 3- 5 years. Perhaps would go well now with a meaty dish and if given time in the glass to open.

Upon decanting the nose was very enticing with blackberries & blackcurrents after an hour of so truffle and earthy aromas of the forest. A subtle brown rim but heart of crimson still. In the mouth just so smooth with complex gentle fruit and soft elegant tannin. Everything a good Margaux should be. If you like classic Bordeaux, BUT not green, this is a must try wine. Do not expect power but well rounded elegance.
Margaux / Saint-Julien 2005 tasting (with many other wines too) (Restaurant Vineum, Rotterdam, NL): Tasted blind. Relatively youthful appearance, just a hint of browning; quite a peppery nose, liquorice, energetic, slightly nervous, crushed red berries, sticky tannins, very good length. Not at ease with itself - looking back at my previous notes, I get the impression there is quite some bottle variation here.
I bought 6b of this EP and have been working my way through them over the last 5 years. Disappointing in 2015, but this finally seems to have hit its stride in the last 18 months. The 2 bottles we have just drunk were excellent. Sadly I don't have any more. Really good!

Wonderful wine and especially for the price. I had six bottles, all good about 2010 to 2014 and thought it was yummy and approachable then. On this date it has more tertiary flavors, integrated mellowed tannins and savory with just the right amount of remaining fruit—for me why Bordeaux is my go to over most new world Cabs . Wonderful with beef bourguignon. Was equally enjoyable compared to Carrudes Lafite 2000 (but the Pauillac has a little more stuffing/tannins and may still improve). No reason to wait on this great QPR Margaux, no real hurry either.
Not had this for a few years and it’s still evolving as one would expect. Dark cherries, some leather, slight tobacco notes. Tannins are pretty fine too. A very good example of a 2005. Pretty good value at £25 en primeur back in the day. Fine.

Has definitely improved since the last bottle I tasted two years ago. I suspect it’s one of the earlier drinking 2005s but it is still a relatively young wine. Harmonious wine that is smooth, fresh and balanced. Some dark brooding red fruits on the palate and a continuation that seemed to be a combination of bitter chocolate and rusty iron filings, if you can try to imagine that! Look forward to seeing how this evolves over the next decade.

Of course a deep colour, a concentrated bouquet, a bit puppy fat/sweet in the start, than a very balanced, very concentrated taste followed by perfectly ripe tannins, lovely bitters in the finish; still too young, so give this wine at least 4 to 5 years and you will become rewarded with a 93-94 points wine.

Opened to breathe for 2-3h, lots of leather, tobacco, earth on the nose, the palate has hints of oak wrapped in opulent red and black fruit. Solid uncomplicated claret, in its window. Consistent with my previous notes, continuing at or around peak and ready to be depleted during the new year. Very good for sure but not great; the Seavey '05 Merlot from last night had far more expansive aromas and complexity in the palate expression. My new year's resolution will be to enjoy the rest of these from my collection in '18. Great tonight with my grilled burgers.

Blueberry and red fruit, a lovely nose of meat, Asian spices, fennel seed. Has modern vanilla notes that I usually loathe but this wears them well. Unusual that such glossy, rich, chocolatey and smooth flavour should come in such a light, refreshing package. This took a while but really hit its stride with an hour after opening. This is definitely soft enough to drink now but I think this will keep very nicely. Still in its primary phase I think this has the power and balance to be a great 20 year old claret. 93

Powerful cigar and tobacco nose upon first opening, softened after decanting. Dark ruby color and deep, concentrated flavors of blackberry and tea. Drinking quite well right now, but especially for Margaux this is a wine of considerable power so I do think it can age and might improve.

YES. Two years on from last reviewing this and I think it is getting a lot better. For a bdx it is still a very alc wine, which is a negative in my book as it sort of swamps the fruit. It has fruit and the tannins have really softened out. Is it a great wine, NO, is it a good wine, YES. Very acceptable.

Dark garnet. Quite aromatic. Palate is very nice - seamless balance and lots of interest. Cigar leaf, spice notes and dark fruit profile. Fine tannins. Medium body and medium length.
This is drinking very well now - I would tend to drink these out to 2020 or so but not much further as I don't see much further upside and as tertiary flavours take on a bigger part of the profile it will lose some of the fruit. Really superb wine and a great value from Margaux.

Beautiful Margaux that is drinking vey well right now. While a few more years in the cellar may move the needle even further, there is also no need to wait. Opened to breathe for 1-2h. The nose has opulent leather, forest floor, and oak. The palate is earthy red and black fruit, mushrooms, with faint tannins and acid on the finish. Very pleasant, this is well into its drinking window and accessible. While perhaps not singing with tertiary characteristics like a superstar, this is a solid well made claret. In looking over my notes from the past two years, the assessment has been remarkably similar. If anything with more air time, the fruit has receded and the oak and leather have emerged as more prominent notes. Still dry, very dry.

Medium/full bodied, richly textured with a lush character to the fruit and tannins. Silky, sensuous and charming, the fruit feels great, the finish offers freshness and length along with tension. You can drink this now, or age it for further development. The wine was made blending 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot.

Popped and poured. This is clearly in its drinking window to my tastes, although several years ahead before decline. A very tasty, modern style Bordeaux, with enough going on to please a wide spectrum of wine lovers. A classy everyday wine.

Not profound, but a very clean and very tasty wine. Nothing to fault - strong cassis nose, tannins smoothed out and an abundance of jammy dark fruit. Maybe too clinical though?

On the 28th of April 2017, King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands celebrated his 50th birthday (on the day before) with a dinner in the Royal Palace in Amsterdam, to which 150 of his fellow countrymen were invited, randomly selected from those who were born on the same date. This wine was served with the main course (beef) and we were very happy to charge our glasses tonight for a belated Loyal Toast. The wine is showing very well, it is beautifully poised and elegant (like our Queen), in the early stages of energetic maturity (like our King), dedicated and charming (the Royal Couple); classic Du Tertre, classic 2005, toasty oak, black pepper and ripe red berries, impeccable balance and length, very stylish. Delicious now and until 2030. Long may he reign!

Stewed plum, cherry, blackberry, baking spice, and graphite. Elegant perfume. A little sweet. Earth is there but faint. Harmonious and balanced with average complexity. Got a little loose after just a few hours. Perf with our beeves + bourbon mushrooms tonight. Solid QPR, especially for the vintage.

At present, this is not in its most harmonious stage. The nose is floral and sweet, with peppery, slightly vegetal notes; the palate is fresh and juicy, with light tannins, lively but with a lack of structure, gravitas and body; the finish is aromatic and length is good. I find it hard to score this right now, also in view of earlier positive experiences. I do not think it is a faulty bottle. But will it recover? Retaste.

Finally this is settling down and the fruit is less modern and the nose is more classic. Still not a great wine, but a very nice, chewy, succulent Bordeaux for food. Will easily stand up against a Tournedos Henri IV :-)

First sip was after 5 hour decant, tasted pretty good with Marguax aromas on the nose. Some secondary flavors emerging but still fruit present. Pleasant experience, still have one left. No Wow, but totally solid and not worried about last one.

Light, aromatic with herbaceous red fruit. Well integrated tannins. Good texture. OK finish. Nothing very special but perhaps enough positives to make the outlay worthwhile.

Floppy and loose - there is not a lot of structure to this wine resulting in something that is all about average quality fruit with no backup. Considering how good 2005 was this is pretty average.

Took a good hour and a half for the funkiness to blow off. Then, it was a nice soft, if uninteresting, wine. And probably in its prime drinking window now. I don't see this getting much better. Further, not convinced that this is a $35 wine (or $47, if you look at the average Community price). Serviceable, aged Bordeaux.

Opened this with some friends and had it decanted for about 30-40 minutes before the first taste. Definitely still a bit tight, so waiting an additional 30-40 minute it really settled down and the aromas were a bit more refined and the balance on the palate was excellent. Not an overly long finish , but still some black fruit, and earthy tobacco notes present while the tannins and bite are not very present if that's what you're looking for. Overall a well balanced, approachable wine. One more bottle to go!

First bottle from a case. Most noticeable thing was how smooth it was with hardly any noticeable tannins on the finish. Certainly a classy, feminine and smooth wine. It is more of a warm and diffuse wine as opposed to a linear/precise wine. Interested to see how it will evolve.

Good everyday Bordeaux...except for the price. This is a bit disappointing given the much heralded 2005 vintage. Nose is rather restrained for a Marg. Color is nice clear ruby with a faint rim of pink. Sweet tannins are feminine and not grippy, as others have noted. Finish is faint and the attack on the mid palate is muted.
This is ready to go. Good buy at $35...not $50.

Young colour, restraint nose. Nice fruit, medium structured and with a good length, very balanced but lacking a bit spine and grip, a crowd pleaser in a modern style without being jammy or ordinary. On the other Hand there is not much terroir and the wine is already fully developed. So drink up until 2020 bevor it will lose its remaining spine and grip. A good wine but nothing to seek out.
On day three (filled in small bottle and stored in the fridge): Flat and without spine (86 score)

I have to say, this wine was a crazy experience for me. When I first opened the bottle, the funk and aroma was unlike anything I've experienced. I would describe it as a dirty diaper that you want to keep smelling but don't know why. On first taste there was an explosion of berries, funk and savory notes, mushrooms and wet earth. After letting it sit open for a few hours, things mellowed and everyone started playing nice with each other. Blackberries, raspberries, mushrooms, dirt/earth, that unmistakable funky I keep talking about and much more came to life as i drank it. Very strong on the merlot I would also add. It hit its peak drinking after being open for 5 hours or so. Day two, flat, borring, lost all its life and it's funk. Wamp wamppp
I think a few more years will do this bottle well to bring more of this madness together but don't let that stop you from drinking it now.
I bought this for $65 and have to say, I don't think it was worth it. A very fun and wild wine to experience but $65 can get you some much better juice.
We enjoyed this. Our impression was similar to other recent reviews though I noticed a little tart berries or some other flavor at the back of the palate that I didn't like. Day 2 I didn't notice the objectionable flavor and enjoyed it more: it may have needed more air than I gave it on Day 1.
On Day 2 we opened an 05 Valmengaux that I liked more than the Du Tertre. But they were both nice.

Opened 2 hours prior. Fragrant, lifted bouquet showing damson and cigar leaf. Palate is round on attack and opens slowly to a complex mid-palate that is supremely well balanced, showing cherry, graphite, and cedar notes. Fine tannins and a long final.
This was wonderful. In a very nice spot at the moment. I doubt if it will add complexity but I would say this will easily make another 5-8 years if stored in good conditions.

Opened to breathe for 2h in anticipation of the Season Premiere of Game of Thrones. Opulent tobacco, leather, red cherries, faint oak on the nose and palate. Soft tannins on the finish. As good as my note from last year. Easy drinking tonight with Mexican take-out.

Monthly tasting club "The Tasting Club" 2016-02; Bordeaux 2005 (@ DJ): The bouquet shows creamy dark berries and cherries. On the palate also creamy dark forest fruits like blueberries. Some plums, soft licorice, vanilla and toast. Beautiful balance between acidity and sweetness, round tannin with still a good bite. Good length. Early maturity now, but the wine is still developing for the better. 90-91

From a half bottle that I let breathe for half an hour:
At first an energetic nose of black cherry and coffee, followed by a savory, medium weight body with a palate of black fruits and forest floor. The fruit had a subtle crescendo into a moderately long finish and a little peppery kick.
An hour later, the wine became more classic Bordeaux, and more stolid. The nose now revealed more confected fruit and more cedar. The body remained savory. Juniper berries became predominant on the finish.
All the while this wine was balanced and food friendly; more appropriate for lighter fare. Today, I preferred the first rather than the last glass.

Decanted shortly before drinking. An hour or two decant or a year or two more cellar time would help, a bit closed at first but opened in the glass. Medium body. Red plums on nose and palate. Nice, easy-drinking dinner wine.

Excellent.

From 375ml, followed for 2 days... This is ready to go, wide open and filled with sexy fruit. Nowhere near fully mature of course, but fun with the exuberance of youth. At first, the bouquet was a bit much for me, with slightly sickly whiff of stewed sur maturite but with a few hours of air this toned down. The palate is smooth, nicely balanced and made for midterm consumption over the next 10 years, 15 at the outside. A mid-modern QPR, it won't make you forget the stalwarts of tradition, but no complaints on value. The last glass was the best. 90-91 pts.

Lovely. Needed the 2 hr. decant. Has more tannins to power through another 5 years, but drinking well now. A classic Margaux wine, elegant and well balanced. Fruit is upfront in a more modern sense, but not far removed from traditional style. An excellent value for Bordeaux!

YES-now. This is coming good. My memory is that earlier tests were not so positive. Now, it is is better and more substantial than many other 2005s I have had. However, the style is much more new world than trad Bordeaux,. It has a lot of fruit and substance, no real age but mouth-filling. Very forward and attractive.

Opened to breathe for 2h. Dark red purple classic Bdx, with lots of fruit and tobacco notes on the nose. On the palate a delicious blend of cigar box, oak, and juicy cherries, silky tannins - just a bit of structure, and the acid finish, clean and bright. The perfect companion to grilled flank steak and green beans. This is in a good spot right now, hard to see how this can get much better with more aging. It's ready to enjoy!

Very enjoyable. Required over 2 hours decant to reach its full potential. I suspect that this will be better in 5 years, but it's still drinking well with lots of air. Decanted for about 2 hours. Rich, lush and juicy with black and blue fruits, cocoa and spice. Velvety mouthfeel with plenty of concentration and depth. Soft edges and polished tannins with a nice fruity finish. Overall, elegant and very enjoyable with a classic Margaux flavor and texture profile that was very old-world in style. Has added more depth and concentration over the past year and a half.

Frans de Beer and his lovely Adriana decided to celabrate their 25 years together and we were invited, which is not a punishment with e.g. 2005 du Tertre, 1996 Langoa-Barton and 1997 La Tour Blanche, a perfect terrace and 25+° C. The first bottle of the du Tertre was a bit chunky and missed the flesh to support the mid- and aftertaste (87 p). The second bottle however showed the same upfront perfectly dosed new wood and more body and balance.

A meaty, barnyard funk on the nose with rich berry and cedar. Typically smooth and approachable palate with sweet dark berry fruit, milk chocolate and toasted nuts with a long powdery tannin finish. A private dinner (at home): The richest of the three vintages tasted today, with a wealth of fruit but still that inimitable, elegant and feminine but generous Du Tertre character; modern style but no lack of finesse. It does not look like this will be closing down at any point in its lifetime, so drink with pleasure until 2020+.

Monthly Tasting Group HWS #084; Margaux (By RG): Beautiful already somewhat evolved bouquet with red fruits, chocolate and some lactic impressions. On the palate red as well as dark forest fruits, sweet spices, vanilla, chocolate again, firm acidity and round tannin. Nose still showing a lot of the oak. Very modern style with lots of concentration and extraction. Palate shows a lot of dark fruit but tasted a bit harsh, bitter almost, with a rather hot tobacco flavour on the finish. It did open up a bit after 2-3 hours. Overall this wine was a bit disappointing for me. Perhaps it needs some more time for all the elements to come together.

Friday Night Double Blind Tasting $40+ (Bin 75): Dark core with bricking at the edges; strong cheesy note of the bat followed by cream, vanilla, and dill; leather, cherry, dried fruit, really nice balance, very drinkable; liked the wine but thought the nose was bizarre and nobody got Bordeaux so I have probably scored this conservatively; seems like it is starting to drink really well.

From 375, popped and poured. Dark purple. Nice, though what reluctant nose of dark cherries, black plums, a little blackberry, some new leather and some smoke. Tannins pretty well resolved. Mid weight. Not a particularly long finish, but clean. A modern style wine, but still very much Margaux, IMO.

Very modern and sweet style – not a classic Margaux. Some signs of bricking already, I just wonder how well du Tertre really ages – it always seems to drink best with only 5-10yrs of bottle age. Not to my personal taste, and a chateaux I used to enjoy for budget Margaux but find myself increasingly avoiding (due to both the changed style and increasing price).

Smoke, oak, licorice and ripe, black cherries lead to a still youthful, tannic Margaux that wants a bit more time before it's red berry finish softens and gains more complexity. The wine is showing much better than it did in my last tasting few years ago.

Decanted for 2 hours. Beautiful balance, very food friendly classic bordeaux. Blackberry and wet earths on the nose and palate, no hint of red or blue fruits, medium body soft tannins, acidity just right, maybe too feminine for steak or game, actually went great after seafood cakes and carmelizied onion garnish. Drinking well now, with intriguing complexity, should last at least another 5 years.

Deep Ruby with thick leg. Black fruit aroma and is developing, open a half bottle on 23 December and drink around 3 hours. Nose developing and did not reach it peak yet. Although it is approachable at this moment, better to age for another 3 - 5 years for the secondary aroma to develop more.

Not sure I completely agree with the previous reviews saying this is good to go. While the structure is not as aggressive as I would have expected for a 2005, the fruit is still very primary. Black, meaty, tangy fruit that is round and plump and still needs time to soften up a touch. Should be pretty decent stuff but I would be tempted to leave it alone for another 3 or 4 years.

Bordeaux 2005 (@ DJ): After hearing this was Du Tertre the bouquet was a big surprise. It had a lot of primary raspberry fruits, almost like Gamay wines, but beside that also cassis and some spices. On the palate the cassis was more evident, but the raspberry remained. Pleasant oak and a firm dose of sweetness. Already very open and easy drinking.

proper storage since initial delivery from futures order.
from wine fridge, immediate pop and pour into 4 large red wine glasses. Set aside for 90 minutes in cool place prior to dinner. On splash into the glass, raspberry cream aromas with a hint of toasty oak fragrance. Not the most aromatic wine ever, but certainly not as closed as previous notes indicate. Blue, garnet translucent hue. On last glass, serious sediment and t crystals.
90 minutes later..swirling brings about a candied raspberry, floral note. Again, not overwhelming...just very pretty. Palate is a wonderful balance of perfectly ripe fruit and oak...light on its feet and yet weighty and full on the palate. Clean finish that dig not drag.5-10 seconds. Tannins are perfectly ripe and acidity is proper (if eating...might be a tad tart if drinking alone). I can see where previous tasters got the "feminine" reference from. It fits. My guess is that this wine is just entering a solid drinking window. I'm not sure if I want to see this bottle get old as I wonder how this wine's palate impression will change as its fruit moves past its youth. Nice drink.

The Wine was opened for 4hrs and the cork replaced to be drunk the following night, so this has been exposed to Air. The wine may have been sleeping but my notes apply at this stage of its life.
Color: Dark Ruby Red Nose: Muted; certainly very subtle aromas of black and red fruits, but nothing like what you would expect for a wine from the Margaux Appellation where wines are renowned for their aromas. Palate: Hints of black fruits and vanilla, not well balanced as it was quite lush and fresh being dominated by the acid, but not enough to make you pucker. The tannins were silky and it was an elegant wine that just needed a bit more fruit. Overall a nice wine but not one that I would pay > $50 for again. Maybe around $30-$35.

375. Bottom line: this needs more time. Closed nose, but with time and swirling blackberries and raspberries. The palate doesn't deliver a lot of flavor now, but it is balanced, a mid weight. Food made this wine come alive, as it did the 2000 du Tertre. I understand why some folks call this modern in style. It is dark purple, and the finish is just slightly sweet. But there is no noticable oak, and I think it is also very much Margaux, with an elegant, food-friendly style. I'll try this again next year, but my guess is that it is at least a couple of years away from entering its peak drinking window.

The most modern wine of the night. Dominated by this roudned, internationalized blueberry nose. Nothing about the wine spoke of typicity or terroir. A very polished wine but just not anything worthy of its company
Interestingly enough, in a tasting of 20 petit chateau 05s in Feb 09 (notes below), the Tertre was near the top. It seemed to exude a regal quality that the others simply lacked. It was beautiful at that setting, but not at this setting. Is this because it is in an awkward stage or because it simply was outclassed by wines of true terroir? I think both. Hard to find lesser petit chateaus that can do more than offer brightness of fruit and balance. They rarely kick it up another notch and at this tasting the other notch was a requisite!

This was great straight out of the bottle!......really perfumed and inviting. The palate is fuller than 2004 as expected and this is already got a great full fruit core. The nose has an immediate hit of flowers (violets, roses) and also more than a hint of blueberries. Palate is tight and tannin is prominant but already quite mellow. The flavours are classic blackcurrant with some sweet fruit and leafiness. There are also some mocha, leather and earthy notes. It is almost Burgundian in some aspects. Picked up 6 bottles for £22 each which on this showing is great QPR

Drank as part of a bordeaux tasting. Deep dark purple color. Extremely tight on the nose with touches of plum and a underlying earthy/meaty note in the background. Not a whole lot of flavors coming through on the palate because the ripping tannins kept everything locked down. Slightly hot finish. I would not drink this wine anytime soon but it has all of the makings of coming together in several years. Plenty of acid, tannin and overall substance to go the distance. No rating right now but this could definitely be low to mid 90's potential in the future.

Bordeaux Night (Binny's Grand Ave.): nose: very nice and well balanced nose of leather, black currants, cedar, red cherries and bits of fresh picked berries. Good depth and shows off the margaux quality to it very well right now at this young age
taste: shows off the youth with big and ripping tannins. Very nice material underneath with a really good medium/full feel and tones of leather, black currants, cedar, and red cherries
overall: This can turn into a real elegant wine with a good 15 years on its side. This will be accessible before then most likely, and there is really good underlying material on this for it to really improve over a good amount of time

Bordeaux 2005 and 2006 Tasting; 10/22/2009-10/26/2009 (Wine For Asia Singapore Suntec): Violets powdered with preserved fruits that subsequently gained meatiness and gunsmoke. A bit reductive. Gobs of sweet ripe raspberries and pink cough syrup on the palate. A delicious wine that is open for business but unchallenging. However, I think many would love to quaff down this wine. 82-84pts

WFA Bordeaux 2005/2006 Tasting by the Wine Review (Suntec Convention Centre, Singapore): Pretty good, but I really do not like the style. Syrupy cherry on the nose, really sweet, almost raspberry ripple like, with just a little toss of earth in there for interest. Palate was rather new worldly too, with some ice-cream soda and red fruit tones along with a little meaty counterpoint. What saved the wine was a great sense of structure lent to it by its acidity and tannins. Finish was pretty decent too, with good length winding the wine down. Good, but not something I would buy.

I was very happy with this wine. Deep ruby color. Some fruit, and moderate cedar and cigar box on the nose. Moderate oak and blackberry flavors. All very nice with my NY strip and potatoes, tomatoes, zucchini from the garden.
The downside: $45 price tag is a bit much for this wine. The wine needs to develop more.

Popped a 375 on a whim. Not surprisingly, closed. But my guess is that this will be substantially better (and my score will be higher) in a few years. With a lot of swirling, a nice but muted nose of dark cherries, dark chocolate and rose petals. Tight on the palate, but a nice lingering finish.

nose: real good margaux elegance is on display with good depth and well balanced tones of leather, black cherries, black currants, and some hints of kirsch
taste: nice sexy medium/full feel with good tannins and tones of leather, cedar, black cherries, and black currants with a touch of kirsch
overall: a real good and classic margaux. Has a real nice elegance to it and should be a really nice wine in another 5-8 years and seems to have the stuffing to hold for a while

2005 Petit Bordeaux Tasting (Bell's Wine Shop): Beautiful earthy nose. I stashed some off so I could return to it after the last flight. The most poised wine of the tasting for me. Glycerinesque levels of smoothness on the palate with classic Margaux traits. What a wine.

Tasted blind - Opened and served right away. Deep ruby, with a thin brownish rim, clear throughout. Pronounced developing nose of red fruits, toasty oak, tobacco and eucalyptus. Flavours of red and black fruit, tobacco and cedar. Medium body, medium acidity, medium tannin, medium finish. Balanced and velvety. Needs some time. Try again in 2-3 years. Excellent. 90+

Great floral nose. Really drinking well for such a youngster. I think this just needs about five years to come around and be really good. This has a good amount of CF so there is some of that grassy green funk in it.

Clean and pure with fruit that leans toward sweet, but also has a dark tar/tobacco/earth element along with a lot of vanilla oak and a touch of baking spices. Long dark finish. Surprisingly low acid and tannin for a 2005. Needs a little time to come together, but not a lot. A bit mushy and disjointed today.

A wine brimming with butterscotch, vanilla, oak and sweet red fruits, the nose is just a candy store of flavors. It is amazing how the nose of this wine can so thoroughly fool one's sense of smell into believing this is a glass full of liquid Starbursts. The palate completely shifts the focus to luscious red fruit, fine but drying tannin, oak cooperage and a very tight structure. The concentration is great, while the balance and finish seamless. I am quite impressed with this young Margaux, and I suspect there is a lot yet to enjoy about this wine as it matures over the next 10 years.

2005 Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux Tasting (Drake Hotel, Chicago, Illinois): 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc. Solid purple color. Tobacco leaf aromas on the nose. A good amount of fruit. Notes of gravel and red berries. Medium bodied. Moderate tannins. A well balanced wine considering its age. One of the best modern du Tertre's with only the 2000 being its equal. 92 points.

A pleasing feel on the palate showing typical spice elements in its aromatic profile. Less pronounced oak-derived notes than usual and that is a good sign. Shows concentration and sap, with a bit of meatiness, and superior density than its sister Chateau Giscours. Bottle tasting.

BORDEAUX 2005 / Cabernet rules; 4/5/2006-4/10/2006 (Bordeaux): Smells of espresso and milk chocolate! Palate is also rich, even voluminous, coating over the tongue, with oaky (sweet oak) flavors... Also somewhat hot and the alcohol is present. But not bad, depending on your taste. 88-90

Into its prime drinking window, but given the time it took to get there it should hold for years. A beautifully balanced, harmonious wine. The colour is still dark with a brick tone, the nose is rich and scented and the palate has a flowing texture and flavour saturation, but never heavy (13% abv.)
I understand this estate has a significant (20%) planting in cabernet franc, which has been brilliantly utilised in this wine to lift its fragrance and sweet notes.
Compared to a 2003 recently tried, the 2005 was a great step up in structure, balance and age worthiness.

Very much like the last bottle, a little plusher than my usual claret, long finish, cedar and cigar box but also some fruit in the mid palate.

This bottle was more of a dirty bdx than I remembered, lots of oak and leather and earth coming through in the first two hours after openining. Then the red fruit began to shine. Paired with Easter ham and potato salad leftovers.

This is drinking very well now - I would tend to drink these out to 2020 or so but not much further as I don't see much further upside and as tertiary flavours take on a bigger part of the profile it will lose some of the fruit. Really superb wine and a great value from Margaux.

Retaste.

90-91 pts.

from wine fridge, immediate pop and pour into 4 large red wine glasses.

Color: Dark Ruby Red
Nose: Muted; certainly very subtle aromas of black and red fruits, but nothing like what you would expect for a wine from the Margaux Appellation where wines are renowned for their aromas.
Maybe around $30-$35.

dark inky color. somewhat feminine. sweetness and fruitiness make it a very welcoming and enjoyable wine.

Either completely closed at this stage or just plain boring. Probably will evolve into a good wine with food, but likely not with enough complexity to provide an mental stimulation.

Beautiful wine with much potential. Fine specimen of young Margeaux, with balance and polish. Long almost sweet aftertaste with some force. Nose of berries, smooth mouth with cassis.

Earthy, black pepper, smoke and cassis aromatics are found in this wine. Full bodied and concentrated with cassis and spice flavors, the dark berry finish was a little short.

2005 Margaux Blind Horizontal (Urbana Restaurant, DC): Tasted single blind in flights of other 05 Margaux. All wines double decanted two hours. Small variance in temperature of service.

Tight on the palate, but a nice lingering finish.

taste: nice sexy medium/full feel with good tannins and tones of leather, cedar, black cherries, and black currants with a touch of kirsch
overall: a real good and classic margaux.

A pleasing feel on the palate showing typical spice elements in its aromatic profile. Less pronounced oak-derived notes than usual and that is a good sign. Shows concentration and sap, with a bit of meatiness, and superior density than its sister Chateau Giscours. Bottle tasting.
