Deep colour. Rich and honeyed, white flowers and lightly oxidative zest. Zesty citrus, honeysuckle, talc, but with a leaning towards honey richness reflecting its age. Lovely acidity, quite textured, smooth. Persistent flavours. Has moved beyond its youth but still drinking beautifully.

Great nose accentuated by a hint of botrytis. The palate was insanely waxy and coated your mouth for minutes. Picked up acid with air, but wishing there was more acid on this bottle. Not as fresh as the '95 Butteaux served next to it.

Yellow gold colour. The nose is booming with ripe tropical fruit, subtle smoky sulphur I don’t usually get and Chablis, and loads of vanilla oak spice. Ripe and rich without any flab. On the palate it seems the structure is there to keep this going, although this showing is definitely more ripe than fresh. The minerality is there but the fruit is overwhelming the showing right now. 92-93.

Light gold in color, small amount of sediment in the bottle, the juice was in a good place with just a little oxidation creeping in and the acidity still holding things together. Delicious!

Mainly Pinots Dinner with Peter Rosback: Deep gold. A lovely wine with a nose of lemons, toffee, grapefruit and a touch of Epoisses-like development. Also, some evolution and appropriate oxidation on palate. Still with some sulphur apparent with chalky, citric and mineral flavours. Also showing a bit of sweatiness. Grand Cru architecture and mid palate weight. Quite long. A lovely Chablis, developing nicely.

Not quite so superb as La Forêt '95 of a few weeks ago but very fine with lovely harmonious bouquet of white fruit and biscuit and medium- bodied and long palate still showing peach and lemon together with fine flinty minerals, elegant but lively acidity and steely backbone which paired well with oysters followed by langouste and giant shrimps. Very good.

This has been drinking so well for a decade and it aint slowing down. There's a touch of apricot to the aroma (botrytis?). You also get some toast and truffle development and a drizzle of honey. Aged Raveneau, Dauvissat & Fevre at E&R: Totally different from the previous two. This is rich, and smells like a strong soap. Very powdery. Decanted and poured, this wine has been tasted a number of times since released with this wine last tasted three years ago in June of 2009. This bottle gives a similar impression. The wine remains awkward and lacks excitement. The aromatics hint at seashell, mineral and lemon but seem dominated by richer fruit notes that keep the bouquet unfocused. The color remains a vibrant medium yellow that is appropriate for the wines age. The medium weight palate shows balance and length on the finish but lacks precision and clarity. This wine will most likely not benefit from additional bottle age and likely hit its peak four to five years ago. Imported by Kermit Lynch. Purchased on release.

Dinner at l'Artusi 2/23/2012 (West Village): Deep straw. Deep, deep Chardonnay nose, def some botrytis honey but just as a lovely garnish, very deep, vinous goutte-stuff -- reminds me of Meursault Perrieres: exotic. Bewitching nose, hypnotic; oak. Palate also full of metals/goutte, nuts, resolved Chardonnay of calm, fine Meryl Streep poise, in a lesser role. How could this be any better? Drink. (Note: I use the word "goutte" with white Burgundy to describe a flavor, mostly found in Meursaults, that I have not yet figured out a better word for. It is a very positive attribute.)

An immediate wow with a beautiful scent of fresh minty greenness, stony minerality and developing creaminess around pure lemon fruit. There's amazing depth and balance here, lots of complexity that keeps unravelling with air and amazing length. One of the best white Burgs I've had.

Golden yellow. Aromas of citrus, white flowers and a whiff of roasted nuts characterize this opulently-styled Chablis. Fully bodied in the mouth, with deep vinousity and a gentle undercurrent of wet stone, pear, and a hint of pineapple. Atypically low acidity for a Raveneau -- in fact, I might have guessed Meursault Genevrieres were it served blind. A good wine at peak maturity, but one that is more Cote de Beaune than Chablis in style.

Nice stuff. So pure and fresh but not the usual oceanic type of freshness you expect from a Chablis. Specifically, it smelled like celery. Exactly like celery. I have never had anything that smelled so evocatively of celery before, including celery. As weird as that seems, this is still a delicious wine.

Popped and poured but waited about 10 minutes in glass. Whiffs of lemon with an initial dense palate of pebbles, seashells, and rain. After about 10-20 more minutes the wine really opened up and I could sense tangerine, spices, and some sweetness with great minerality and a silky and full, but almost ethereal mouth feel. Great length. A joy to drink.

This was good, but I was expecting a bit more. It seemed tired, not necessarily old though. Just a bit lacking in everything. Sounds negative for a 90 point wine though. It really was nice with good cut and complexity. Some lemon chiffon qualities. A pleasant bitterness on the finish. A victim of expectations.

White Icons @ my place (Netherlands): This wine oozes with minerality... flintstone, wet pebbles, salty seashells, chalk and clay. It is dominating and very impressive with its masculinity and classical countryside notes like barnyard, springmeadows, some hay, white stonefruit, licorice and certainly has some animality in it. Old-school-Chablis as good as it gets... 18/20.

Timeless, classic Burgundy at its peak. I have been priveleged to taste this wine over a dozen times, and each one of them has been superb (save a couple of corked bottles). Brilliant minerality, and a dry honey finish, this is a wine I would be delighted to drink every day. I don't foresee this improving, and I don't know how long it will hold in its present state, so drink up.

Struck me as somewhat atypical not just for Raveneau but for Chablis as well. There's an unusual element of what I'll call sweet spiciness to the nose and palate that I've never before noticed from this source. It's beguiling, and this was a terrific wine with plenty of dimension, but that extra seasoning almost wound up being a distraction for me. While I'm left a bit curious, I'm not complaining.

A gorgeous Raveneau that's just entering its peak drinking window. Quite clean and elegant with a wonderful oily, round mouthfeel. Medium-bodied with nice flavors of lemon oil, limestone and chalky minerals. Finishes finely concentrated and so elegant with a long, minerally aftertaste. Should improve for a few more years but this is lovely now, especially with food.

Medium yellow. Very interesting mix of florality, orange oil, and pungent green herbs on the nose. As I noted earlier in the year, this has more generosity of texture than just about any other '01 Chablis I've tasted, tonight finishing with a distinctly buttery note. Good acidity. Probably best during the first 2/3 of the bottle; after that, the fruit seemed to fade and it became more austere. Perhaps not the most classic Chablis, but full of character and interest. Ready to go.

Zibibbo Anh Thu and Maria for Raveneau side by side -- these '01s just have that weird funkiness consistently. A bit sulfury, almost corked smelling but not quite. Some less flattering associations came to mind like the wet inside of an eggshell and matchstick. Some more pleasant stuff like raw lamb and coconut orange peel. Polarizing wine.

Raveneau and Bea @ Dan's (Palo Alto, CA): An odd wine, in that the nose and the palate seemed to be in opposition. Honey, cream and rich in the nose, but citrusy, acidic and somewhat metallic on the palate. I enjoyed it, but there did seem to be some warring factions that need to come together.

Raveneau Montee de Tonnerre retrospective (Dan's place, Palo Alto, CA): Marco and gang Raveneau-a-thon – Hmmm, the second disappointing ’01 Raveneau in a week. These ’01s seem to have a real heady, funky, sweaty handful of copper pennies type thing going on. Like the ’01 Butteaux recently tried at VVW in Palo Alto, you see some good sides (good acidity and palate, nice toasted hazelnut oil and white truffle), but the funkiness is off putting. Hmmm…

The wine was opened and poured. It was tasted as part of a flight of Raveneau MdT vintage 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2005. This was clearly the most awkward of the quintet of wines. The wine, when tasted side by side with the other Raveneau MdT, reveals the drawbacks of the vintage, exhibiting what appears to be a botrytis characteristic. The aromatics shows oyster shell, minerals, copper, and botrytis notes. The color is light to medium yellow that is correct for the wines age. The medium bodied palate shows good balance but when compared to the other wines in the flight it gives the wine a more clumsy feel. Based on this wine's showing, previous experience with this wine and tasting of other 2001's from Raveneau, it would appear that the Premier Cru wines may have reached their peak and are slightly past their optimal drinking window.

This is a stunning bottle of wine. Smooth as silk on its own with the trademark seaspray, oyster shell in the background. With a crudo of yellowtail with citrus this wine came alive. Cant describe everything I sensed, but this was a complete stunner for this burgundy neophyte. Gotta get me some more of this elixer.

Quite light yellow for its age. A bit of sulfur to start. Some lemon and oyster shell on the nose but prominent fennel and other green things. Fresh in the mouth, moderate acidity, great lanolin/lactic texture-that Raveneau extra layer rarely seen in other wines of the region. Very good and impressively youthful, but this reminded me more of a white Graves than a Chablis, with its Sauvignon-like nose and Semillon-like palate. Unique wine from a Chablis vintage that everyone loves to hate.

BBQ with Julie Chris and gang -- dark gold color, explosive nose of white truffled honey and crushed stones, but there was a sliiiight off-funkiness there too. This also seemed a tad more developed than it should be at this point--color, aromas, palate. We all determined not "corked" but something not as glorious as should be here (we had a spectacularly corked '00 Foret next to it that made this look clean and fresh as a spring day!)

Straw to light gold. Penetrating nose of pear, herb and distinct, steely minerals. This is extremely complex, yet very youthful. The wine attacks the palate with precise, focused flavors, yet gives the perception of richness with a lot of zing. This wine needs at least 5 years to really strut its stuff – but oh will it strut!!!!! (18+)

Very much a gunsmoke nose to the point of being somewhat off-putting. Intense palate attack with beautiful bright acidity and meyer lemon notes. Ends up very soft and yielding with great finish and delicious mid-palate of mineral and citrus. Delicious overall, but the damn gunsmoke persists for hours even in the after tastes.

Raveneau Tasting (Pike & Western, Seattle, WA): The color was far more vibrant and crystaline in this vintage than the 00 or 02. The nose showed honeycomb cany and smoke. The other tasters talked about how Riesling like it was. I understand what they meant. The palate was not that chardonnay like. I found it to be sweet, simple, and a bit muddled. The finish was very long. Hopefully this will settle with time.

Forward nose showing hazelnut, lemon curd and oyster shells. This wine has a very ripe feel, with some exotic fruits coating the mouth thanks to a high glycerol texture. It is a wine with plenty of power harnessed gracefully by the mineral acidity. An excellent wine.

30th Birthday at Palena; 6/2/2011-6/5/2011 (Palena, Washington, DC): N: Almond, white flowers, lemon rind, sea salt
P: Lemon rind, white grapefruit, lots of almonds, and minerals.
F: Long finish, with really great acidity and freshness for its age and nice mouthfeel.
Overall this wine was amazing, so glad it wasn't showing any preox notes. 93-94

Brett's Epic Birthday Tasting (Palena - Washington, DC): nose of almond shells, golden pear and nectarine. the palate is rich, but zesty as well. golden apples, mixed nuts, honey and pears. long finish laced with minerals and a hint of sherry. this is in a really great place right now. i think this could improve for another year or two, but it's definitely singing right now.

This wine has been drinking really well over the past 3-4 years. It is still quite fresh with citrus blossom and apricot smells. In the mouth it is rich and pulpy with nice underlying minerality. It finishes with good cut.
